  • Karate master Hokama Sensei talks about the importance of the Bubishi, a Chinese book that was brought by migrants to Okinawa, and could be described as their survival guide with various information from healthcare to self-defense.
This bonus question was recorded while interviewing Hokama sensei for series one of Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate. At the time it was too difficult to translate the meaning of Hokama Sensei's answer about the Bubishi to a level of accuracy we were comfortable with. However, as we archive all the recorded content in several huge hard drives (thank you to our Series One sponsors who helped with this) this summer we were able to go back to the original footage and work on this question again.
After Hokama Sensei's answer and the credits, James and I give updates on Series Two and thank yous to all those who are making it possible.
SERIES TWO of Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate full length episodes will be released starting in October 2022.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on TH-cam, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views and a fan community of 30,000+ on Facebook.
Series One was generously supported but international karate community, and we need your help again.

    GOALS OF THE SERIES
    1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
    2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
    3. Store the original data as an archival record.
    4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
    5. Make the videos available for free online via TH-cam, and on Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community, and to archive aspects of Okinawan culture before they disappear.

Our focus is on Okinawan masters as that is where we are located, and our team is able to translate from Japanese / Okinawan to English. Interviewing Chinese masters would be great, but probably best left to those proficient in the language.

Thank you for bringing this video to the public, it is great that more famous Asian teachers are finally talking (not just briefly mentioning), the Bubishi. I appreciate How Hokama Sensei also brings the many inclusions more to light such as the medical aspects, massage and meditation. I have personally been researching, experimenting, validating, documenting and instructing the Kyusho and Health aspects in a more focused manner, by reverse engineering of both martial and health aspects. Study of the Bubishi is not only valuable information, it would be a major benefit for any Karateka to study it (the book/s) deeply. So bravo guys!
