My dad started me hunting with 30-06 when I was a kid and to this day, I am now 50 and still use it. Never seen a need to change. Thanks for the video and Merry Christmas.
I love the 30-06 it is a very accurate round. Used to hunt everything withit in a pre 1964 Winchester before it got stolen. Sad day. Hit a coyoteon the run at 250 yard with open sights. Loved that old rifle. Wish I still had it.

-06 is my favorite. I guess it's the history of the cartridge that makes me like it above other rifle calibers. The same will go for the 45ACP, tho I just now after many years of shooting have developed a love affair with my RI 1911. I'm still caring for and loading WWII -06 brass I was given long ago. 👍😎
Ironbomb: You got it! I agree with you. The very FRIST firearm I ever shot was a WWII M1911A1. My grandfather took me out to go shooting out in the country where we lived. He brought a 16 ga Remington pump and the 1911. At the time I was all of 8 years old! First shot with the 1911 drew blood (MINE!) as I learned the hardway how to orient my thumb web under the beavertail - Ouch! Been shooting ever since. Back in those days we could just drive out to the rice fields and hunt pheasant, which we very plentiful in those days (1950's.) My M-1 has been with me for nearly 40 years now and is a pretty as the day I purchased it.
@@MarkBrown5150 that's excellent! I found the firearm activities on my own. My dad was not a hunter so I didn't shoot my first gun until basic training in the Air Force! But nothing feels as good in my hand as my 1911. ♥️♥️🇺🇸👍
Still one of the best cartridges out there. Its no slouch and gets the job done for everything a guy would normally hunt, especially in N. America. Its proof you dont need a magnum as it can get near enough mag performance.
I've been hunting with 30-06 since 1960. That's 59 years of consistent, dependable performance. My main hunting rifle is in 30-05 Ackley improved just so I can tell my brass from the other 30-06 users.
Fantastic review of the new 30-06 starline brass. I have had very good results with starline 308 Winchester brass. I own a 1903A3, and a garand, both in 30-06, and enjoy shooting both. Gavin, you need a garand. There is just something about the history behind the design, and function, that brings joy to any range day! Thank you , and keep the content rolling! 👍
I have several rifles, but the 30-06 has a special place in my line up. I've been using mine over 20 yrs.and have never had any issues with mine not being enough gun, it always performed well. It also shoots well when I do my part. I also enjoy its military history.
I love the '06. I've taken deer with it obviously it performed great. In the PA deer woods, it has no match. Since my shots never exceed 250 yards, I can never justify taking the 7mm-08 out instead of my 30-06. The versatility of the cartridge for people who hunt a wide variety of game is nice.

I bought a R700 30-06 when I first started cause I wanted a do all rifle. I've since added to the collection with modern calibers but I still like taking the 30-06.

Used .30-06 all my adult life starting with the issue M1Garand in the Army. Later built one with a barreled 03A3 Springfield action, 03 trigger guard, follower, and receiver sight, and a sporter stock. Saw no need for anything else. Neat thing, for fast reloads, I can use 5 cartridge stripper clips with the Murphy drill, one cartridge in the rifle, fire, reload, timed to engage next target. Learned this drill in the Army with the M1 Garand. .30-06 and the variety of loads is all I will ever need.
Gavin, brass testing IMHO must include a "torture test" of sorts. Knowing how good or bad the consistency of a lot is great but testing for 5,10 or even 20 reloads on a few pieces of brass in the test would be nice. On a book max load how well do the primer pockets hold up and what about the necks cracking, you have the ability to show annealed vs un-annealed, plus measure primer seating force. Just my thoughts, love your videos.
The problem is that it wouldn’t carry over from one rifle to another. Pressures vary a lot with throats and some chambers are loose enough they really stretch brass (m1). Case life is often more about the chamber and load than the brass
@@G5Hohn Say that about Hornady or Federal brass that can't hold a primer after 4-5 firings while my Lapua cases are going on 10+ firings on hot reloads.
@@MrMalicious5 I’m not saying Lapua brass isn’t better. It is. But there are chambers and throats that can kill it rather quickly while some can keep Hornady alive rather well. In the latter case, Lapua will last even longer than the Hornady will.

Excellent video. Just what I was looking for. I have taken a handful of deer with the 30-06. None of those deer took a single step after being shot. I mostly use soft points for deer and they do very well.
started rifle hunting with a 35 remington. been on the 06 for about 15 years when not in shotgun only zones. settled on a ruger american std about 5 years ago the only gun I hunt with. Playing with heavier grain bullets this year. ( hornady 190 CX) for the day when I go somewhere that is lead free.
Have 6 rifles chambered for the great ought six in our family. My grandfather has elk and deer in the Montana record books and only shot .30-06 in the lower 48. My examples are both Model 1917’s, one being heavily sporterized with a Shaw barrel and Timney trigger fitted to it. Can’t wait for the next hunting trip. Maybe an axis with a Sierra GameChanger
Eight years ago I circled back to 30/06 and have used it for just about everything ever since. I set mine up with a Huskemaw 5-20 with 40MOA of elevation and I settled on the 230g Berger OTM Tactical bullet at 2,436. Shot whitetail deer and feral hogs everywhere from 15 yards to 719yards. Never needed to take a second shot, everything expired within 20 yards of where it encountered that bullet. H4831sc is awesome with heavy for caliber bullets in 30/06!
I have, and hunt with (sometimes) a .30-06. Love it, love it, love it. One thing I’ve noticed is that I get a lot of reps out of my brass. I can’t say that for some of my other cartridges.
I've used Starline Brass in some Pistol Calibers and it's of excellent quality. I've both hunted and Target shot with the .30/06 and have three Mauser Rifles so chambered. Used to have a Springfield M1 Garand for DCM/CMP, but moved on to an L1A1 FN FAL. I also love the 7x57mm Mauser, but the .30/06 beats it.
Great job guy's and good info I have used starline brass in 224 valkyrie, 6.5 grendel, and 6.5 creedmoor and had excellent results with all of them! Price point is also a big plus.
I'm currently upgrading my '06 hunting rifle. Shillen barrel on the way. Major advantage to me is that I can go to a gas station and buy a box of '06, if I forget or loose my precision loads.
The only caliber I would buy after my 30.06 would be 300 win mag. But I still wouldn’t get rid of my 06. Excellent video and I agree with the gentlemen the only rifle you will ever need around the northwest, for its versatility. 💪🏽👏🏽🙏🏽🇺🇸
Taken a variety of game with my M-1 in 30-06: NVA, VC, etc. I think I need to try Starline in 30-06. I have used it with at least 3 pistol calibers and .223, but my favorite brass LC 44, 46, 47 & 66. In the newest Hornady manual they have a section dedicated to the M-1 Garand and .30-06. They have recipes very close to or at mil-spec.
Using H4350 and 176gr Atip. I get half MOA at 1000 yards. Have even received the same results at 1560 yards. Great caliber with awesome knockdown power.
I have a 3006 here in south africa. You can always find bullets and powder and i can shoot for springbuk to eland. Only need one rifle. Fire arm related stuff costs 2 x more than in the states
I have a CZ 550 full stock in 20". It is an awesome woods rifle as it's short and just feels warm holding a real wood rifle and quick on target. A longer barrel might be nice for open hunting for longer distances but if you ever find one of those CZ rifles buy it they no longer make them and they are old world quality with the Mauser action not the cheap fall apart new type guns.
@@steveg1667 Wow!! You lucky bugger, lmao. Those Mannlicher stock CZs look absolutely brilliant, and the feel great on the shoulder. Yes, the short barrel jobs are great for close country. With the 20" barrel, the 30'06 hasn't got any real mongrel in it, but the report is so much different to the longer barrels. Merry Christmas to you Stefan
I would like to eventually have a .30-06. My late Father always wanted to have one, but never had the money to buy one. My current hunting cartridges/calibers are: .270 Win and .30-30 Win.
Dad shot a 30-06 all his life. I’ve started with a 30-30. Then have used .270 Win, .308 Win, and 7mm Rem Mag. I prefer a .270 Win. My son uses .308 Win. All are good on White Tail deer. Never used any hand loads, just factory loads.
I agree 30-06 is all you need.Ask my 14 year old son.He had my Remington 742 180 grain Core-lokt.amo.The only shot he had was a front shoulder shot.It is a 11 point buck.He said Daddy I'm glad I didn't carry a smaller caliber today.So I guess he's hooked to a 30-06.well i.am too. Enjoyed your 30-06 facts,why go to another caliber
I'm all in on the 30-06. We have coyotes, wolves, deer, caribou, black bear, grizzly, sheep, goats and moose all within a 10 hour drive and all of them can be taken with this cartridge. Currently developing a load for 168gn mono bullets, but will be doing some heavier and some lighter next. I'm having a tough time finding new quality brass, but just found a place with Starline. Going to order 200 right now!
30.06 IS THE ONLY STRANDED RIMLESS RIFLE YOU CAN LOAD WITH 110grn to 220grn & shoot them all good .I even still have some 50grn excalerator rounds that did 4080 fps. shoot rabbits hares, wallaby's, wild pigs, red deer, elk ,wild cattle beasts ,& horse ,BULL THAR .shoots from 1 yard to over 800 yards .never under rifled . owned BSA bolt BROWNING BLR , Remington semi auto all 30.06. only got the BSA now .sold other two when I got the Remington 300.RUM .
While working at Home Depot, I had a coworker who told me that 30-06 was not as powerful as a 308 Win and that his 308 could shoot out to 1k easier. I stopped talking to him
I love starline brass. I just wish more was available. It took almost a year to get 7mm-08. And I'm still waiting for some 222 Remington. But, I still love the quality of the product.
Love 30-06 for hunting and target shooting. I'm working on a load right now with the 210gr nosler rdf and h4831sc at 57.2gr. It's been getting under .4" groups and over 2500fps.
I would love to see a review of the .270 Win load development with Starline brass. They finally make brass for one of my all-time favorite Hunting cartridges. I also have a Remington 30-06 700 bdl. So Thank you for always putting in the time for such great content
Have you considered testing a Piezo Electric unit to quantify pressure in your loading technique? I think you have the style to thoroughly test a pressure unit and put it into useful information for the average reloader.
Really, the 30-06 gets better with age... or better with the new advances... I'd likebto see Gavin run the 30-06 Foster Manson reamer in a standard 06, be fore and after.... it'd be interesting. The 195 gr eldm would be great in the 06!
I love to hear about the 30-06 but it was not my first rifle cartridge thing, that goes to the 300 Weatherby Magnum the ’06 is second when I purchased Savage MDL116 SS 22” barrel. Six rifles in the ’06 the MDL 1917, Springfield ’06, Remington, Winchester, and the M1 Garand. Thirty caliber rifles 30 Carbine too. The best cartridge around.
I love the 06 no one on You tube responds to me, but the 06 with a 165 GMX and 55.0 grains of IMR 4350. And I believe that the 30-06 can harvest just about any animal on the planet. The problem is that the industry conditions people to buy their products. However, I will not hunt with the 6.5 for big game. The reason is because I love the 06, 308, and 30/30 for my needs. The bottom line upfront, is that I want an ethical harvest, but if one is hunting a Grizzly I can see why survival is important.
You might try some magnum primers with the H4350. I'm about to try it myself. Shooting Hunter under a 180 Sierra Pro Hunter with WLRM primers I got 2768 ft/sec with an ES of 8 with an SD of 3, shooting 4 shots from 2 rifles. It will probably never happen again but I was impressed. Both were 22 inch barreled winchesters. I'm working with H-4350 now and getting just a tic more velocity but ES SD similar to what you're getting. Also I checked Hunter for temp sensitivity. The initial workup was done at 68 degrees and I put three rounds in the freezer for about two hours and fired them over the chrono. I got 2711 ft/sec and the same ES and SD.
That Magnetospeed almost fell off during one of those shots. Pro tip, always use the rubber shield that comes with it for suppressors. Since doing that I have never had the magnetospeed move on me.
When doing your case neck thickness (every 90 degrees), for consistent measurement of data, use the outer most part of mic. handle which has a slip clutch, that ensures (same) pressure between measuring points. It is there for all persons to make (screw torque) measurements equal. Just trying to help.
I live up here in Alaska and one comment I have is using the 30-06 for the grizzly was probably ok, but I think he would have been better served by a 300 Winchester. And you definitely don’t want to tangle with a brown bear with anything lighter than a 300.A friend died and left me a 1903 Springfield which of course is a 30-06 and I love that rifle. Very moderate recoil, all my other rifles are big hard kicking magnums so the ‘06 is a joy to shoot. I am very curious what your test will reveal about Nosler Custom brass. Everything that I hear tells me that Nosler Custom is the best brass available so I am curious how that will measure up and how it compares to other brass.
The 30-06 will always be the best balance of comprises as a single hunting gun, but if allowed two, I'd go with the 270 for longer range and 338-06 A-Square for the biggest game. 😁
I’d do .270 and .35 whelan and I’d be able to use the same brass for em all. I get lots of free 30-06 brass I’m sure most everyone does. I love reloading
I didn't know you were in Washington. I live in Kent. I have a Ruger American in 30-06 and I want to start hunting for elk but I don't even know where to look for them. What's a good area in Washington state to find elk?
Winchester xpr 30-06 165gr interlock btsp with 58 gr of imr 4831 I use cases from the hornady American whitetail 150gr load that stuff worked well also
I would like you to build and work up hunting loads for a 280 Ackley Improved. Sharp shoulder and minimum body taper just like the Creedmore, but full length and 7mm. Nosler made it a factory round to boot. Off the beaten path a bit, but deserves more attention.
Honestly Starline makes some pretty good brass and in some cases much better than Horn. I've had issue with star but nothing that I couldn't deal with.

My first rifle I ever bought was a 30.06 with a 22 inch barrel and I love it so much I might go and buy me a 2nd 30.06 but in a 24 inch barrel.
Great job guy's and good info I have used starline brass in 224 valkyrie, 6.5 grendel, and 6.5 creedmoor and had excellent results with all of them! Price point is also a big plus.
3 yrs ago, man, time is flying!
I'm currently upgrading my '06 hunting rifle. Shillen barrel on the way. Major advantage to me is that I can go to a gas station and buy a box of '06, if I forget or loose my precision loads.
I do hunt with 30-06 ruger m77 mkll
One advantage of a 30 06 is the wide range of bullet weights for hunting hand loads up to 220 gr here in Alaska for bull moose.
They have recipes very close to or at mil-spec.
.30-06 IN NAM, WOW WHY DIDN'T YOU GET YOUR HANDS ON AN M14?!
Using H4350 and 176gr Atip. I get half MOA at 1000 yards. Have even received the same results at 1560 yards. Great caliber with awesome knockdown power.
H4350 is LEGENDARY!
HA! Great advice back in Dec of 2019 to recommend stocking up on the powder you like.
I have a 3006 here in south africa. You can always find bullets and powder and i can shoot for springbuk to eland. Only need one rifle. Fire arm related stuff costs 2 x more than in the states
i dont know why the hell it took so long for them to make 30-06 brass. but im glad they make it now.
I love the versatility of my 30-06 Browning X-Bolt. Ammo is widely available and my handloads are knock-down dead-on.
A 20" barrelled 30'06 certainly lets you know when it has gone off.... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Matthew Groff Nothing wrong with that 270...
Enjoyed your 30-06 facts, why go to another caliber
I can't wait to get back to shooting again.
Building a 1903A3 USMC WWll sniper rifle with the 8 power scope would be great to replicate!
I hunt with 25/06, 30/06, 30/30 and 338 Win mag here in Western Australia.
I stopped talking to him
His mother probably mixed his formula with Everclear when he was an infant.
I once knew a guy that said 30-06 was the most powerful, and it beats 300wm.
Should've gone with Barnes. Best hunting bullet ever made.
Have you considered testing a Piezo Electric unit to quantify pressure in your loading technique? I think you have the style to thoroughly test a pressure unit and put it into useful information for the average reloader.
I have that exact 116 30.06 savage with Simmons scope. 👊🏽
I've had good luck with starline brass in 243 Winchester
I love the 06 no one on You tube responds to me, but the 06 with a 165 GMX and 55.0 grains of IMR 4350. And I believe that the 30-06 can harvest just about any animal on the planet. The problem is that the industry conditions people to buy their products. However, I will not hunt with the 6.5 for big game. The reason is because I love the 06, 308, and 30/30 for my needs. The bottom line upfront, is that I want an ethical harvest, but if one is hunting a Grizzly I can see why survival is important.
Hi Gavin, excellent video. Please could you share the specification of your micrometer which can transfer data?
Thanks.
I use varget for130gr h4350 180, w760 200gr sierrabt my tikka loves it.nice vid
Parent Case perfection ..... 35 Whelen, 30-06, 270 Winchester, 338-06 and 25-06, everything I need .
Love my 30-06
I just inherited my grandpa's old army 30-06.
600 yard shot at a white tail behind one shot and it was down. Wasn’t useing anything fancy just Remington corelokt 150 grain
Great video...wish the Starline 30-06 brass was available now. (March 2021)
@John Beige I found, ordered and received Nosler brass (made by Norma). It comes in boxes of 50 and the quality is amazing.
Imr hodgdon 4350 is my favorite.. funny how nosler ballistic tip 165 was my round til I started using Barnes 165 180 tsx back in early 2000
Please do an old 30-06 to 300 Sherman chamber job. Apparently the standard barrel is reamed with 300 WSM performance.
Hi Gavin, 200gr bullets either berger or eldx is my favourite. Pushing it at 2725fps....
It loves hunting and long range...
With 150 grain bullets the 30-06 seem to like in a lot rifle the upper end of the reloading manual of 4064 imr powder
I didn't know you were in Washington. I live in Kent. I have a Ruger American in 30-06 and I want to start hunting for elk but I don't even know where to look for them. What's a good area in Washington state to find elk?
Winchester xpr 30-06 165gr interlock btsp with 58 gr of imr 4831 I use cases from the hornady American whitetail 150gr load that stuff worked well also
The old saying is, you can cut pulp-wood with a 30-06, so in my book that is a real hunting cartridge
I just found a Remington 700 in 30-06 and it will be all mine for 550 the reason why I'm getting one is its hard not to find ammo for it
I think the nosler 168 nosler LRAB is the best for the 30-06
Now if I could find it in stock anywhere...
So I wonder if that chronograph negatively impacts your group since it hangs off the end? How much dose it weigh?
A underestimated round with re17 of 52.5gr 200gr sierra sbt thumps like a hell on the gong at 500mtrs:)
Do a 3006 200gr nosler partition development and drive a few hours north for a guided moose trip. Maybe, 168 gr barnes TSX for deer, elk, bear.
