Important goals in the development of this new series were next to a higher driving comfort and safety the reduction of energy consumption. Using weight reduced materials and a less air resistant body, optimised in the wind tunnel, helped the new S-Class to reduce its fuel consumption by 10 % in comparison to its preceding models. The two eight-cylinder engines of the previous series were replaced by two redesigned units with enlarged displacement and all-aluminium block. The 5.0-liter engine which took the place of the 4.5-liter grey cast iron aggregate was already known from the 450 SLC 5.0. The 3.8-liter all-aluminium engine had been developed after the example of the 5-liter engine from the time tested 3.5-liter V8 with grey cast iron block. Due to their higher power with reduced weight the new V8-engines made a better driving performance combined with a more economic fuel consumption possible. The carburettor and injection version of the 2.8-liter six-cylinder aggregate remained unchanged in the program.

This car in metallic blue was my first Matchbox-style toy car. I also remember having a plastic pagoda SL in red. As an adult, my first Mercedes was a red 107 SL, followed by over ten various Mercedes models. However, I never owned an S-Class, SEL, etc. and and the older I get, the more I appreciate these classic designs. I cannot wait for my first big barge saloon!

A great deal of interesting info there--the roll over test was telling...the door windows were still in place. This is not great news to me--I found out how strong the bodies are in an unconventional manner. There was a monster truck event at the Oakland Coliseum about ten years ago. I came upon the used up cars at a nearby wrecking yard--one was a W126. The roof had nearly no deflection, while all the other cars were crushed down to the top of the seat backs.
You can easily buy a used W126 in the East Bay, I did. What an amazing car. I had no idea it was this amazing until I saw this TH-cam.

I wonder if the durability testing is that thorough and extreme on the current late models?
The 2018 E350e have many problems.
I owned a W126, and currently own a W140 and C216 (related to W221). When it comes to tolerance for very bad roads, the old W126 is king. It can shrug off huge potholes and glide over rough roads better than any of the later models. The newer models are better optimized for quiet and isolation over small bumps, but the W126 is more rugged and bad road friendly. The W126 had pretty decent ground clearance and approach angles too. My old W126 300SE had 400k km on its original powertrain when I sold it last year, and it was healthy and built to last decades and hundreds of thousands of km more. In that car, I used to accelerate into big bumps and deliberately aim for potholes sometimes because it was fun to experience how the car could totally brush them off.

@@sultanqasim- yes, I can relate to that. My W126 500 SE would sit all day just eating up dirt roads.
But I must say one thing... My old W116 350 SE was even better still on dirt roads. It was just a huge, very comfortable but unstoppable barge.

Turned down a mint 500SE 5 years ago…oh how I kick myself today seeing what’s happened to the values. It’s not all about the money, but getting a frivolous purchase past the other half would have taken more than just desire into it
You can still pick them up for peanuts, I recently bought my 89 300se for $2500 cad, other than needing a bit of paint work it's a rust free mechanically solid daily driver

Es ist fast unvorstellbar aus heutiger Sicht, das selbst die S Klasse nicht serienmäßig einen rechten Außenspiegel hatte.
Das ist Mercedes Politik...die ersten W116 hatten noch nicht mal eine heizbare Heckscheibe
Daimler benz möchte auch heute für bestimmte x tras money 👍 das Problem is mercedes investiert zuviel für die Qualität obwohl die autos dadurch nicht besser werden bester Beispiel w220 wurde wenig investiert die ingenieure haben trotzdem ein geniales Auto gebaut genauso c219 der kam sehr günstig auf dem markt gerade mal 45.000€ superauto // heute kostet sogar die c Klasse viel mehr 🤦

Schade, dass Mercedes nie auf die Idee gekommen ist, die Autos durch Salzwasser zu fahren, um nachzusehen wo ihre Autos verrotten werden.
Selbst nach 120 Jahren Automobilbau rosten die Autos weg.
Not in California, mine is rust free. 40 years and 250k miles later, not garaged.

Jenson was the first who hat an antibreaking sytnem , in the the FF type. Mercedes copied this with an electrocal way. They think they are the inventors, but they are not, they just cobied it.
