      At least it has consistent frame timing. I agree 30 fps just shouldn't be a thing and its a shame developers and general impulse buy consumers care more about how it looks in a screenshot than how it looks and plays in motion, but if it's a smooth 30 with consistent frame timing it's a least playable. There's no excuse for games like Bloodborne or Final Fantasy 15's performance though where the timing is all over the place.

      Honestly though we're getting a multi-platform port that runs stably on Playstation 4, XBOX-One and PC and all of this was created using Unity Engine which being a frame work that is primarily designed for Mobile and Browser games is very impressive. If Mighty Number 9 had come out this fluid it probably wouldn't have been given the unholy amount of shit that it did. You're getting the full product here and it works smoothly and honestly that's about all I can ask from an Indie Port.

    Thank you for all the lovely work that you do. Even if it's a game I never intend to own, I do so love to watch your comparison videos. They always manage to hit every relevant point and are extremely unbiased.
    I backed for the Wii U version and made mine a Switch version once the Wii U was cancelled.
    I am hoping that since the Playtonic guys were in charge of the WiiU version themselves and they didn't outsource it like PS4 and Xbox, the Switch version will really shine and not be held back too much by its hardware limitations. I also hope the game will looks and runs really well on portable mode, since I tend to play handheld a ton. Definitely looking forward to what you guys have to say about Switch Yooka Laylee!

    There is one thing I do not get: How could anyone call Yooka-Leylee running at 30fps reasonable/acceptable if other games like BF1 manage to hit 60? Sure, BF does not run at 1080p but something like a dynamic 900p-ish. Still, this is pretty nuts...

    • @necrozma8853
      @necrozma8853 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      hondwelt frostbyte is easy for consoles to handle unity is a kick in the nuts

    • @Ledgepls
      @Ledgepls 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      not to mention games like shooters and racers are easy to hit 60fps. things with lots of 3D 3rd person physics and combat etc in big open worlds at high res is much harder to get running at a smooth 60hz

    • @imadubsfan1
      @imadubsfan1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're comparing 2 different games and genres. Open world games have more to handle in terms of environments and detail on the worlds is better than in a racing game, where the bulk of the graphical quality is on the car and roads itself. Racing games are linear in design whereas open world games involve everything around you. Battlefield 1 is an FPS, like COD, like DOOM, and they all run at 60fps because the field of view allows less of the environment to be on screen, so it's easier to render. Like Yooka Laylee, look at other 3rd person games (GTA/Watchdogs/The Division/Assassin's Creed) they all run at 30fps for a reason.

    i have been playing this game since day 1 on ps4 (standard) the main performance issues I've faced are mainly frame rate issues, sometimes down to what seems like single digits; mostly with arcade games, and at some points enemies sinking below the map

  • @epicneszgames3538
    @epicneszgames3538 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    If the game would run on 900p docked and 30 FPS on Switch I'd already be happy if It had the same graphics quality.
    and 720p 30 FPS in handheld mode would be awesome to see on the switch with this game. Let's hope Playtonic is going to do a good job on this game porting it to the switch. Awesome addition to the switch game collection!

      Is there any confrmation that Playtonic are handling the Switch version? I know they were working on the Wii U version but that doesn't mean they're doing the Switch version.
      The Switch version hasn't been said to include any more content than the other versions either- unless it comes with the DLC already included.

  • @MerryBlind
    @MerryBlind 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey John, just to clear this up a bit: Developers opting for Double-Buffered VSync instead Triple-Buffered do so because TB introduces an extra frame of latency, and therefore more input lag, and they don't want that to keep the game as responsive as possible despite being 30fps. Correct?

    • @dark1x
      @dark1x 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is one reason, yes, but also triple buffering puts an additional slight strain on memory.

    • @MerryBlind
      @MerryBlind 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok thanks. One more reason to aim for a locked frame rate then, since even a TB 60fps is worse than a DB 60fps...

    I thought all new PS4 games had to support the Pro or Sony wouldn't certify it for release? Seems a bit lame if Sony are letting developers slide on this. Maybe Playtonic just need some extra time? That would be fair as they're only a small studio. I'd like to see them work on a 1080p60 mode though, I'm not fussed about having a checkerboarded 30fps mode.

    I think it's interesting that even with a 980ti those alpha effects cause trouble but not on the PS4. That shows just how forward thinking the GPU was (if you're being completely unbiased you know this to be true). I built my system at the time the PS4 specs were announced and I made sure to put to get a 680 with 4GB of VRAM because I knew that VRAM was going to be where devs put their resources.
    I mean after all that's why everyone is creaming over Scorpio because of the 12GB of VRAM. The simple fact is that the PS4 Pro is the cheapest way to achieve 1440p and 1800p and occasional native 4k with some games while the Scorpio will be the cheapest way to achieve Native 4k (unless it's $700 like some outlets are reporting). When you factor in the cost of a controller, an OS, and all the parts a PC is just more expensive. Is it better? Yes but sometimes price and ease of use wins out.
    This is coming from someone who spends $1400+ building is own PC every time he needs a new one.

      Are you kidding me ?!
      PC drops below 60fps during alpha effect when running 4K resolution. Still much higher than 30 frame rate on PS4 which running on much lower resolution

      you bought a 680? weren't the 700 series out by then GPU's rarely ever drop in price so I'm worried about your rational thinking if you paid nearly the same amount as a 780

    If a game runs at anything less than 30fps, or if a game has a consistent frame rate but drops dramatically, that annoys me.
    But I don't care otherwise. As long as the game is fun. I do understand the reasons why a game that's 60fps vs a 30fps can mean a difference in gameplay, especially for a first person shooter, but I still generally don't care. It's never bothered me.
    A game like The Last of Us, I actually much prefer in 30fps locked mode. Probably because that's a much more cinematic style game.
    Anyway, can't wait to pick up Yooka-Laylee :) Looks awesome!

    I wonder how it will be running on Switch. Probably still 30fps, but with lower texture quality and some other lowered settings

    LOL. Wish I could show you all the ultimate YL experience. Got it for PC and using the 3dMigoto pactch on the Helix Mod website for Nvidia 3d vison, and the game is absolutely STUNNING! Jumps are so much easier to make with real stereo 3d. "richness and environment detail" You have no idea until you've played it in true 3d. Talk about DETAIL! :)

    I'm not very interested in the game , but it would be cool to see how well it would perform on the Switch. The game looks quite taxing and runs way better on consoles than other unity games like Firewatch , good job from Team 17.

    Common guys, to truly experience this game as intended, 320x480 on an Nvidia gs 8400 for proper n64 resolution and frame rate representation!
    Hey, if you wanna go all out, use that nifty S-video connector and plug right into your old gloriously gigantic CRT TV!
