The Hermit Knight is such a characterful mini, looks so good surrounded by peasants or in a Mordheim warband. Favourite of my collection - so glad a cousin dragged me to Games Day back in the day. Could never sell it. With that said, all these years later I have no idea where the rules leaflet is, so it is indistinguishable from a recast, so I don't see any issue with someone picking one up so long as they are honest about it.
A lot of the old Bretonian artillery models left GW with Bryan Ansell, back in the day. Some of the pieces (including the bombard, but not the organ gun) are currently available via the Wargames Foundry online store.
Great video. Thanks for confirming the origins of the Bretonnian knight bust. I've had one (unpainted) in my display cabinet for nearly 20 years. Its always been a conversation piece as people are fascinated by it. However, nobody has ever believed me about it being Bretonnian or produced by Forge World. (Including somebody who worked for GW who said they "looked into it"!). It is a wonderful resin piece. It came from a great/magical time where I would go onto the Forge World website to get something niche like a special weapons sprue for Elysian Drop Troops, and end up being seduced into spending big money on Resin busts or large scale Warhammer creatures. One again, thanks for the awesome video.
There was another Bretonnian male wizard model too that came out with the one you mentioned... He too is on horseback, and he is wearing a pair of spectacles, with a long curly beard that almost looks Chaos Dwarfish... He's pretty cool too... What about those questing knight models that are so hard to find, and that never got a main production run? I've been slowly collecting them, but they are rare too... Super, super cool minis though! All in all, this was a great video!! I really loved this! It would be cool to see this style of video done with other armies too, possibly... Just as a thought. Or talk about a few other Bretonnians in a part 2, lol... Again, this was such a pleasure to come across!! Keep up the awesome work there!!
@@ValhallanFieldMarshalRobert thank you for the kind words! The other wizard released with this bretonnian wizard was actually supposed to be an imperial wizard! But I agree it’s a really cool model. I’d also love to read more about those questing knights if you have a link or pictures!
@@MTHMiniatures Here are the ones I found... I actually bought all of these slowly. They are findable on ebay, but cost usually over $100... One of them actually got released by GW in the questing knight kit, I think... The one with the parchment on his shield... I found pics of the 4 I know of, but I'm not sure how to post them to you...
I've got the wizard too. I guess I better hurry up and paint him. One other reason they probably won't re-release him is his legs are made to be mounted on the original plastic horses which were very wide and large. I also have that organ gun and crew.
I really wanted the bust after seeing it in a White Dwarf. I probably would have painted it terribly back then, but I wouldn't mind the challenge of painting a display piece.
I really want to paint it, but I feel like it would be very stressful. It would cost so much at this point, I feel like the paint job would have to be perfect.
I'd disagree, most of the army is based off of a lot of the round tale mythos and medieval Europe, that doesn't necessarily instantly mean crusades. There's arguably a better case to be made that they're inspired by the hundred years war given most of their equipment is meant for field battles while most of the conflicts during the crusades were sieges that turned into close quarters brawls during the assault. I'd also argue that its problematic in the same way basing your army off of any controversial real world counterpart is. The Crusades have had a resurgence in interest in recent decades and our assessment of events has shifted to see the actions of the various crusades as criminal especially given they were funded at several points through pogroms as well as that they were quietly advertised as a way to not only save/redeem yourself but to also to find your own wealth in "the land of milk and honey" (which references both Israel and the trading ports of the Mediterranean sea).
@@blackeye256 I think being able to understand that treating certain parts of history as just fun, just an aesthetic or as unserious can undercut the significance of certain historical topics such as the Crusades by lionizing or stereotyping certain aspects of the time period. Cheers. That is good to know, especially with the bombard being in demand for exiles lists.

Can you confirm what issue of white dwarf was the hermit mentioned

Why is being a Christian Crusader problematic? That’s the basis for a lot of the Bret army.

If you think the crusades were unironically bad you’ve been successfully brainwashed.
