Hi! Your video was swapped over to Germany. Thanks for this tutorial! Pretty good work. Although this tutorial is made for GoPro (I own a GoPro 11), I can use the tips for my Sony DSLR. Now I need a clear night sky. 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for the very comprehensive tutorial on setting up and editing a night lapse using the GoPro. I usually focus my GoPro activity on action content such as Kitesurfing, so this was a constructive diversion and I have received a lot of positive feedback on my Perseid Meteor shower that I published last week.
Good vid o walks you through, and it does work. Set mine up last night Think it got hot and froze up Did take like 1k pics So should be enough for video
Thanks. Yes, if you want the very best night lapse results then using the RAW photo mode and editing later on will provide the best results. If you don’t want to edit later on and just want to use the video night lapse mode I outline those settings here: th-cam.com/video/dIYPzEhuwOI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6l8_0qbO3mrAg4o-

Great question. If I know it could rain or snow, I like placing mine inside a container that allows for the USB cable to fit through but is then essentially sealed in the rest of the container. A bag could also be used for this.
Really great video - especially since you even take us through the past processing. I only face one issue with the TimeLapse in the end - when I run the video the brighter corner (there is a city nearby) start to flicker which is really not lookin nice - Do you have an idea where this is coming from? and what could I do, to avoid this flickering? (Settings RAW Picture as you recommended in this video 20secs at ISO 400) Thanks
Thank you. Unfortunately, there will be some flicker in time lapses due to a few different factors sometimes. Rapidly changing lighting conditions or a bright part of the frame relative to a dark part of the frame can also cause this flicker. Several types of artificial lighting can also cause flicker. There are some tools out there that can help resolve this issue in time lapses but they have a bit of a cost.
Thank you! Your videos are really helpful.. Noob question here, you talked about overheating in high resolution in another video if recording for more than 20 minutes. Why didn't it overheat here?
Thank you for your feedback! Great question. So firstly, I have never had any of the GoPros I own overheat to the point that they turn off except one of them where I purposely set it up to fail in conditions that would cause it to overheat and power off. In normal usage such as this I have had zero overheating issues. With time lapses the camera is capturing one frame every few seconds or in the case of a night lapse one frame every 15 or 30 seconds in most cases. A GoPro should not ever overheat to the point of turning off during a time lapse or night lapse because this is a very light workload for the camera.
I’ve been using sticky Velcro to keep my battery to stick to the tripod. I also have it set up so that I can Velcro it to a magnet. The GoPro as well. You can hid a GoPro along a highway guard rail that way really easy. Also, don’t put your tripod where your buddy will back over it in the dark. Ask me how I know.
Love your videos! Question though, why set interval to auto? In the beginning of your instruction you direct us to set it to auto. Later, when you start your editing, you mention the interval being set to 30sec vs 15sec for space saving and storage card capacity. So is auto better or setting a 15/30sec interval? Thanks!
I appreciate your feedback and great question. I should have been a bit more clear on this when using that interchangeably. If you set the shutter speed to 15s and the interval to auto the GoPro will automatically default to a 15s interval. With a 30s shutter speed and an interval of auto it will default to 30 seconds. Therefore interval is not needed in those situations unless there is a situation where one does not want the shutter speed and interval to match which usually will be for daytime time lapses only. However, if one wanted to do a 15s shutter speed with a 30s interval that would be fine, but a shutter speed of 30s and an interval of 15s would not work due to the shutter speed being longer than the interval.
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you for a great explanation! I didn't know the interval would automatically default according to the shutter speed. Good info and thanks again.
Having a bit of trouble... I took 405 photos with the same exact settings. Edited everything fine in Lightroom, exported as JPG, etc. When I import into premiere pro, my sequence is less than a second. Super quick. I followed everything, made sure I chose image sequence etc., and verified that the folder selected had 405 photos, which it did. Maybe I'll restart all over again, but I expected at least half the time duration you got for your clip!
I think I might know a possible solution. Do your file names cross a 1,000 increment at any point in their naming? Ex: 1997.jpg, 1998.jpg, 1999.jpg, and then 2001.jpg. The naming convention when capturing these on GoPro will usually skip anything ending in at least three zeros. So what you have to do is go back and import the additional photos starting with the file that starts the next sequence. You can then place this second batch on the timeline next to the first batch for a continuous sequence.
I just use a simple Ziplock bag and seal the opening minus a small opening for the USB-C cable to fit through and I make sure that opening faces downward.
thank you so much for this in depth process, I really enjoyed it. I have just ordered a GoPro to try and take night lapse from my high rise in NYC against Brooklyn Skyline and I am thinking if you can recommend me about what shutter time and ISO when shooting a night lapse against a skyline? Later I would also like to take photos more slowly and for all of winter but maybe 1 photo every 5min. But then I must totally change shutter speed and ISO for it to work between night and day, or is that something that is possible to schedule, so depending on time it uses a special setting? I guess that feature is not available :)
Thanks for the demonstration, you make it very easy to follow. One question, can the timelapse (photo) be finished off in photoshop rather than premiere pro?
This is a great question. I have tested these settings-and many variants of them-with the Action 4 and found the Action 4 to not get even close to as good of results as night lapses from the GoPro. I believe this is because of the way in which the Action 4 handles RAW photos and the megapixel factor. The Action 4 night lapses lack a lot of detail and do not seem to pick up on many celestial objects with the exception of the very brightest stars/planets. For night lapses, the GoPro is my go to action camera.
@@GreatDayForAHike Wow that's a surprise considering how much better the Action 4 performs in low light , thank you so much for the this reply; you don't know how much it helps. I'm hoping to see the Northern Lights in a few weeks and I'll only get one chance! I have the GoPro 10 so I'll take your advice and take it with me also. It's hard to do a 'dry run' as it's a one-off phenomena without anything similar to practice on. Thank you again.
Hi what I do so mine doesn’t fall over it’s the same but black in the middle there’s a HOOK I have a small bag with lead waits in it about 500grams and I hang it for the HOOK great video bud
Thank you for putting this guide together. Just recently tried these settings myself during (Waxing Gibbous 92% Moon), the moon turns out really bright and causes a glare. What would you suggest to correct this? I've got the video uploaded to my channel (Its Video Format, but Picture format was doing the same with the moon)
You can bump your ISO down to 400 and set your shutter speed a bit lower. 5 or 10 seconds for instance. This will help the moon look better but you will not capture many stars due to these being features in the sky with less light than the moon. However, if the moon is the focus of your night lapse and you want to capture the moon with proper exposure then try the settings I mentioned above.
So I have the ISO Min: 400 & Max: 800 but the shutter was set to 15secs. I'll drop the shutter down to 5 secs tonight in photo mode and see how that turns out. Thank you for the quick reply.
Sounds good. Yes, doing a night lapse with the moon in the sky can be rather challenging lighting to work with and I have found it does require plenty of experimentation depending on the result you want.
You do not need a special charger adapter. The USB cable that comes with it connects to the GoPro to output power and then when you need to charge the power bank you plug it into a computer or a wall charger with a USB port. It’s really quite convenient.
Hello: I have been following your Night lapse directions with my new Hero 10, but I have a couple of questions; What is the largest SD card that the Hero 10 will handle? I ask this as my camera seems to overwrite files. What format should I use to format the card, and is there a setting somewhere in the camera to prevent this? Or, is it possible to have the camera just shut off or stop filming when the card is full? I cannot go nearly all night...I am using the Anker power bank that you recommend. The camera is taking beautiful photos, just not enough of them! Thanks for your excellent channel!
All great questions. The Hero 10 can support up to a 512GB MicroSD card. The recommend cards are listed here by GoPro: community.gopro.com/s/article/microSD-Card-Considerations?language=en_US It is recommended to always format the MicroSD card in the GoPro. Just make sure you have all files off the card first that you want as formatting will erase all data on the MicroSD card. The camera should stop filming when it is full. If data is being overwritten on your card by the GoPro then this card could have some type of hardware problem. Thank you for your feedback and support!
Goodnight. Congratulations on the excellent videos on the channel. I have a Gopro Hero 9. I only use a cell phone to edit my videos and photos in the quik app. I know that 6 gigs of Ram is not enough. When I make videos in 5k/30... I don't see the image on my cell phone... only the audio comes out. On the Gopro, the image and audio come out perfect. I would like to know which notebook I should buy to edit my 5k videos and what size of memory I should have in order not to crash. Can a friend help me? Alexandre Manzoli BRAZIL
The Volta is a good option for a power source. If the Volta is fully charged along with a battery inside the GoPro that is fully charged this combination should last for most of the night provided outdoor temperatures are not too cold. Also, be aware of the weather as the Volta is not waterproof, but should be able to handle some moisture.
This would largely depend on the specific location and how bright or subtle the appearance of the northern lights are at that location. In general these settings should translate well to capturing northern lights, especially the RAW photo mode settings.
Yes that is normal. Even on my desktop with some pretty good hardware those previews take forever to load 😂 It is not needed. I cancel it each time. Lightroom will still load the preview anytime you select an individual photo.
Hello! I need some help.. Why my timelapses and videos has lower contrast and saturation after exporting the final result in Premiere Pro? On the preview video looks fine, but after exporting it, loses a bit of contrast and saturation. I could show you an example but I can't send photos and videos here, u fortunately. I saved 2-3 pics from a 300 pics timelapse, just to see the color and contrast difference, and it's a big difference. The photos , I edited them in Capture One, exported them in full resolution because I want a 4K timelapse, than I imported all the images in a "image sequence" , on the preview video looked fine, but after exporting the final video, and opened it, looks less saturated and the contrast is much lower. Do you know what the problem can be? Thanks!
There are a few different possibilities here. The first one that comes to mind is the bitrate you exported the finished product with may not be high enough. I recommend a bitrate of at least 50mbps for a 4K video.
@@GreatDayForAHike Now you will be surprised haha. I export them in full quality. What I mean by full quality: Maximum render quality and maximum encode quality checked (I don't know if it helps, please tell me if is worth it to check those boxes) , I export the videos in CBR and the bitrate is set to 200 bitrates. I searched the problem on youtube, and I got a LUT file which fixes the gamma of the video. And in the premiere pro settings, the Color Display......(I don't remember the full name lol) was unchecked, so I checked that one as well and now looks fine. But after transfering the video to my phone, looks different tho.
@@GreatDayForAHike Yes. On my phone looks a bit different, but maybe my laptop screen should be calibrated or I should buy a 4K monitor.. Or maybe the color export settings are wrong? Hmm
I used factory settings on a remote island in Fiji and got a black screen. Just tried a different short video’s suggestions in the eastern Sierra and this time a black screen with a few white dots. So hoping your video does the trick. I’m pretty frustrated.
Was it still black when you viewed it on a computer? Did you use the time lapse video mode? For best results I highly recommend the RAW photo mode. The video mode can get good results but I find it has to be a really dark sky with lots of stars for best results.
Thanks to your videos I was able to do this: th-cam.com/video/53vSMQefzHY/w-d-xo.html But after I tried other settings to do a transition to daylight with lower ISO min and auto shutter but it doesn't work on the HERO 11. I made a short video comparing it to the HERO 8 to show the issue: th-cam.com/video/Ja7wmqtsPE8/w-d-xo.html Did you experience the same underexposure ?
I have a lot of night lapse examples I have captured using GoPros throughout the years on my channel if you want to check them out. This is one of my favorite ones from this year: th-cam.com/video/E7VwHnf6Exg/w-d-xo.html
I'm trying out night lapses with my go pro but I don't have the finances to cover the adobe products, and those cancellation fees/annual commitment payment plans they use isn't very consumer friendly. I'm going to try my luck with some free applications to see if I can achieve something close.
I’m actually in the process of creating a video that shows how to create star trail night lapses using any GoPro and in that video I demonstrate how to do this with entirely free software. There may be some overlap with this that is helpful to you.

Color profile of flat is still best from my experience but RAW does give more control for the editing process.

Thanks
On Photo mode
Thanks. In photo mode Wide is the only option GoPro allows for.
Hi what I do so mine doesn’t fall over it’s the same but black in the middle there’s a HOOK I have a small bag with lead waits in it about 500grams and I hang it for the HOOK great video bud
That’s a great method to use and I appreciate you sharing that here. Thanks!
What's the best settings to use for an Aurora Borealis? In Night Lapse video and photo.
A quick question. Do you need a special charger adapter to use the power bank? It’s not clear. Hi
The recommend cards are listed here by GoPro: community.gopro.com/s/article/microSD-Card-Considerations?language=en_US
It is recommended to always format the MicroSD card in the GoPro.
What are your thoughts on using the Volta as the power source for a night lapse?
The Volta is a good option for a power source. If the Volta is fully charged along with a battery inside the GoPro that is fully charged this combination should last for most of the night provided outdoor temperatures are not too cold. Also, be aware of the weather as the Volta is not waterproof, but should be able to handle some moisture.
@@GreatDayForAHike I’ll give it a go and see. Thanks for the input!
Is there any settings you would change specifically to capture northern lights aurora borealis?
This would largely depend on the specific location and how bright or subtle the appearance of the northern lights are at that location. In general these settings should translate well to capturing northern lights, especially the RAW photo mode settings.
Is it normal that loading preview for +1000 photo takes over 30min?
Is this step even needed? Can I cancel it?
Yes that is normal. Even on my desktop with some pretty good hardware those previews take forever to load 😂
It is not needed. I cancel it each time. Lightroom will still load the preview anytime you select an individual photo.
Are you shooting 11? Can you get a star trail longer than 11 seconds?
19:04 mosquito biting your arm. 🤣
LOL one of many!
Who is getting ready for the meteor shower night? Though it's gonna be spoiled by the full moon... but have to see to see!
Yes, that full moon is not ideal timing for this one but hopefully October and December will be better timed.
I see. So it looks fine on your computer now but not on your phone?
@@GreatDayForAHike Yes. On my phone looks a bit different, but maybe my laptop screen should be calibrated or I should buy a 4K monitor..
Or maybe the color export settings are wrong? Hmm
Those are a few different possibilities to consider as well.
What setting do you use for a daytime time lapse?
In this video I outline the basic settings I use: th-cam.com/video/SQSDasK7HoU/w-d-xo.html
GoPro ad: “Just point and shoot”
Reality: “Here’s a 45 minute video to maybe get close to the footage in the ad.”
You can point and shoot using the time lapse video mode and get good results but for best results I do prefer the photo mode.
👍🏽👏🤝👌
Thank you
Thanks to your videos I was able to do this: th-cam.com/video/53vSMQefzHY/w-d-xo.html
But after I tried other settings to do a transition to daylight with lower ISO min and auto shutter but it doesn't work on the HERO 11.
I made a short video comparing it to the HERO 8 to show the issue: th-cam.com/video/Ja7wmqtsPE8/w-d-xo.html
Did you experience the same underexposure ?
I wonder why people dont show the shot at the end of video after puting so much hard work on making video 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@GreatDayForAHike sounds great! Thanks for responding so quickly. I'll keep an eye out for that video.
