Thank you for sharing your favorite art supplies. I was drawn between the acrylic paints, mostly do to price and another artist saying “..beginners are wasting money buying the artist grade paint... I was so excited you said Liquitex Basic are the ones you use. I have purchased a 4 oz set of 6 and a box of 48. The price was just under $40.00 and I’ll find out which one I want more of. Hobby Lobby has the 4 oz tubes starting at 4.99 and I saw another 5.99. I didn’t check the others. The coupon is gone but they will have them on sale, I hope 40 % to 50%, but even 30% will help. Thank you again ! Your awesome! Fran
Yes, Liquitex gloss varnish, applied with a sponge brush (it goes on smoother with the sponge brush than with a regular). Just make sure you get all the high res photos you need before applying the gloss varnish because the gloss makes it hard to photograph. The gloss will bring out your colors really well making it look like an oil painting =D
I've watched your videos for years now, you have contributed SO much value to the world, and have been SO generous with all the knowledge you've shared! I love how organized you are, approaching art as though it is a true science. Your passion is so awesome & inspiring. xo
Hi Lisa! I have an English Class school project about muy favorite artist and the teacher said that it could be a singer, actress, whatever... I would like to choose you because you' re really inspiring to me and since I discovered your channel, I love art more than I did before. I hope you give me permission to talk about you. Thanks!😊
You are my favorite artist ever!! My gosh I can't handle how amazing your work is. Haha :). You should do a video showing how you varnish your paintings!
Enjoy watching your videos each week. I paint using airbrushed acrylics, but we share similar techniques. It's nice to see all the well thought out and edited videos of your work, you are very talented.
Love your videos, you've helped a lot as I'm just getting into this after a 15 year gap. One thing I've never had happen as mentioned here, though, is cheap paint pulling away from the canvas. I've always used a mixture of the cheap stuff as well as some better ones, like the Liquitex. I have some (admittedly pretty BAD) pieces laying around here from 25-30 years ago that are still intact. I've just never seen paint peel away from canvas or canvas board. Regardless, like I said, you've helped a lot! Keep up with the excellent content here!
Good point with the comment about water getting into the ferrule. I had an experience where too much water got into the ferrule of one of my brushes, and all the bristles just completely fell out. Definitely don't want to experience that again! lol
So I'm making a little art room for myself and I need some inspiration. Could you film a "room tour" of your painting space? I'd love to see how you keep your paint brushes and all that kind of stuff :)
Hello Lachri! I would love to learn to paint. Right now I draw everyday because I want to become accurate in drawing before starting to paint with acrylics. Your advices for beginners are important for a good painting.
happy I saw this. I just started painting, doing easier stuff, black/white/color without really blending and bought myself a bunch of liquitex paints. All I gotta do now is practice making really thing and straight lines ;)
You want to use a liner brush with long thin bristles and a fair amount of water mixed with your paint for that. Sort of twist your liner brush into the mix. When you hit the canvas, the more pressure you apply to the paint brush, the thicker the line. The less pressure, the thinner :D
Good tip on using an airbrush to keep your acrylic surface wet. I also use one for the final varnish coat. Cans are just too unpredictable. The Frederix watercolour canvas panels are also great for complete airbrush pictures. Much smoother texture then normal canvas so the overspray does not show up as much on the surrounding bumps. For paint you must try the Createx Illustration line or even the E'tac Edwards FX (EFX) line from usairbrush.com. Costs more then Createx but very easy to use and clean up.
For anyone who can't afford the ott light you can simply buy a fluorescent bulb in the right color temperature. 6500 kelvins is daylight. You can find compact fluorescent bulbs in 6500k at lowes and home depot. Then just buy some kind of fixture. The clamp lights at lowes and home depot are only like $8. These bulbs can also grow plants (and aquatic plants) very well depending on wattage :)
beergie I'm not sure how you are saying that 6500k is out of date for daylight temperature... 5500-6500k is what daylight is measured as. And like you said, exact color temperature doesn't always matter because artwork isn't usually displayed outside. I just prefer to work in cooler temperature light which 6500k compact fluorescent bulbs achieve for me. I was just offering a cost effective alternative that has worked very well for me and many others. You can use your ott light if you want to :)
I did it I finally bought air brushes! I saw Thomas Kinkade also used an air brush and he did it to a point where it adds almost 3d effects! I love this thing so much its my child! I think my brushes are jealous of it because I don't really use the thin ones much anymore only every now and then! I love you Lisa! We should be sisters :P Now all I need to learn is oils!
The oil will have a higher gloss than the matte acrylics. Its not a stain (assuming you are painting on a quality canvas and using quality paints), just that it is glossier. When you finish your painting, and apply your varnish over the entire thing, this will even out the gloss. For me, when I add oil over acrylics, I add oils over ALL of the acrylic, so the gloss covers it all anyway.
The best paper towel that I like to us is blue and is sold at Canadian Tire, or any where your Mechanic supply place. There is no fluff or hair that comes with thin towel. Thanks Bonny
What you be your recommended set of Liquitex colors to purchase as a beginner? Like what paint colors do you think I would need to be able to blend the most colors? & I LOVE YOUR VIDEOs you are so unbelievably talented! Don't ever stop you have an amazing gift!!
Lisa, I have watched this in the past and enjoyed it more this time. I see where you use the air brush to wet the paint to do blending when needed. I was watching the "Graeme Stevenson" channel and he was interviewing "Barry McCann" in episode CIYL 0702. The discussion was using "interactive" paints with special mediums for various effects. This almost look like magic. Have you ever used the interactive paints? If so, do they give the surface like the Basic paints that you use. I know you use the Basic paint because you do under painting with acrylics and then use oil over the acrylics. I wonder if the interactive would work the same way. Thanks for all :)
Hi :) I was wondering if you could maybe do a video about airbrushing. Like what canvas and what materials work best for you? And maybe how to use the airbrush to make a painting? Great video by the way. I love fredrix canvas too.
Great question. No, I never share brushes. Acrylic is a much thinner paint than oil. This means I need my brushes to be softer. While I often use the same types of brushes, the oil does harden the brushes a bit making them not great for acrylics.
Great info an thanks. I have added this for keeping brushes clean while you paint. Take a tuna fish can, clean it and turn upside down and punch holes into it with an awl or nail. Place upside down in a container that fits it. Fill with water and when you place your brushes into it....slightly rub and the residue from the paint goes down to the bottom and keeps the brushes cleaner. Also, I never use any paper towels just old terry towels cut up and then I just wash them.
when i buy the materials i buy folk art paints they work to me the same as liquitex only more fluid i love the layering i can do with them and the blendiing i can do it fast if i know where i have to blend right away, when my grandparents buy the supplies they get liquitex lol or artist loft i love both i think they work the same then again i have not messed with heavy body paints i want to lol the canvases they buy me are called fine art very thick frames and rough ish canvas but i gesso a few times to make the surface smooth and when im done with the painting i put silk sealer over it you cant feel the canvas after that i love it! it works for me but my brushes i buy the best brushes i can when i can! :) i dont like cheap brushes i have learned the cheaper they are the quicker the bristles fall out walmart brushes for me last in less then a day before all the bristles fall out! but walmart paint lasts forever! :) again its what im comfortable with just like ur comfortable with liquitex lol my mop brushes i spend $30 or more each lol they dont shed as much!
My top 12 favoriete acrylic paint supllies 1 acrylic paint from liquitex basics 2 canvasses from the action. Thats the dollar store of the netherlands 3 long handel brushes from alliexpress 4 a water bowl the one like you have 5 black and white gesso 6 watercolour paper from alliexpress 7 stay wet pallet from masterson 8 paint spatula,s 9 paint sponges 10 paint apron 11 painters eazel 12 a bar of antibacterial soap. I find this a cheaper alternative for the brush cleaner that you have
Yep, graphite is next on my to do list. I just have to finish another graphite tutorial to go along with the release of that video the same week. It should be ready in a week or two =D
I don’t know if this is good for hair but I have really long hair and paint gets in it and the paint and dries and the brush cleaner gets it out really well
I know I'm digging thru your old vids but what are your thoughts on Golden brand paints. I didn't see anyone ask you about them in the comments. Thanks!
I either obtain permission from photographers, buy royalty free reference photos, or take the photos myself. If none of these options are good for you, check out "Paint my photo" for photos provided for artists to use. There are some really good ones on there.
Hi there, I am writing to you from a god forsake country called Namibia. Thanks for sharing your art supplies. I have made the experience with entry level acrylics you describe - yet we cannot get better acrylics here or out of South Africa. So I have to wait until some friend goes and returns from Europe for anything nice of note. But the airbrush for keeping the colours moist until one is finished was an eye-opener realisation. The airbrush you recommend, does that have to have a compressor?
Sure, many people might not be able to afford the compressor. Retarder works in a different way than air misting though and the effects are visibly different. Acrylic retarder keeps paint wet because it has binding molecules that work to stop the pigment molecules from binding as fast as they would (read: drying). The binding molecules typically leave the colour muddy and have a tendancdy to make pastel colours, at least thats what I find with my liquitex basics. Water on the other hand, keeps the paint exactly in it's original colouring because it does not have any artificial binding agent in it: it just separates the pigment molecules already in the paint. This keeps the paint and its original colour wet but able to blend easily with other colours. Hope this brings clarity to the complexity of retarders! :)
There are so many airburshes! What would be a good model for small areas? Or a good model with different needles for variable areas? I've never owned one so I know nothing about them. Thank you:)
I've been watching your supply videos and wondered if you could also share what image projector you use? I know you don't use it on all of your paintings, but I'm interested in trying one for the first time!
You should go to garage sales I know loads of you tubers in us who get loads of them basics Acrylics , I'm in uk 🇬🇧 and this morning I got 6 huge tubes for a quid lol 😂
I have to ask, why Viva paper towels for oils, but not acrylic? I really enjoy your videos. Now I just have to put your tips I've learned to good use on my own canvases.
Arvind Kaur The smaller needle makes getting tinier detail easier, so it really depends on what you're going to be painting and the size you plan to work on. I have both a 0.35 and one size larger.
Lachri Fine Art thanks mam for replying can u please suggest me should i go for this one coz i am really new into dis( www.amazon.in/Aerograph-Hawk-Combo-Airbrush-AG-182P/dp/B00MUI7O1S/ref=fallbacksessionReftaghp_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=08148S7EQN99SCKC5ZAR)..thanks
Would it be possible for you to link me to your entire airbrush set up like the compressor and airbrush itself? I'm really stuck!! Thank you and I think your videos are great :D
Hi! First, you are amazing! Hoping you can tell me why my mop brushes drop a LOT of hairs onto my canvas??? I love using the mop brush but it really is driving me crazy! lol Also, do you use an easy flow medium to help with blending? I am typically an oil painter but want to use the airbrush throughout my paintings. Thank you in advance!
Love your videos! Can you recommend a mop brush maker? I bought one, and the first time I used it the bristles came out on my painting!! The one I had was made by Cornell in China.
Love your videos. You mention using an airbrush for your work. What brand or type of compressor do you use? I'm looking to buy one since I do tee shirts and murals. Keep up the great work.
Lachri Fine Art Thanks. I've been looking at the Iwata and the SilentAir compressors also. They can be expensive but I like the quietness of them. Right now I'm using a shop compressor and I think I'm going deaf because of the thing plus I can't use it at night. Neighbors have a problem when they don't get their sleep.
Love your work and watched many of your vids. I live in the UK and can't find the Fredrix canvas over here, do you know or any of your viewers know of any equivalent to this canvas please. ty......have looked on ebay to find they do some from the US but the P&P are expensive.
So this is 4 years later, lol, but I wondered if any of your top picks have changed since then? :) I'm a watercolorist, just getting into the acrylic medium, but want quality. Do you still use liquitex basics? I was looking at the professional line, but want more info about it, or even golden before buying it. Hope you are well! Blessings
This one helped me the best! Let me just go grab my vodka and clean my clothes haha. Two days ago I was painting while wearing a neckless and it got dipped into my paint, decorating my shirt in yellow. I had to soak the whole shirt to get it out haha. I have one of the water wells and its so handy! Mine came with a lid that has a container where I store my unused paint (sometimes i pour to much :0 ). Great video, thanks for the tips!
Thank you for the good explanation about items on your list. Could you tell me the size and brand of your 'mop' brush? I didn't know about these but the blending would be so great. thx.
+Kristine Campbell I believe my larger one is 1 1/2". I've actually moved towards using makeup brushes instead as they don't tend to shed as much. It's just hard finding ones that have a long enough and light enough weight handle. If the handle is too short, or heavy it won't work well.
How do you think Liquitex basics compare with Golden acrylics? Do you prefer one over the other for different projects? Thanks for making these videos, super helpful!
For the ott-lite thing couldn't I just paint in front of a window or something where there is lots of natural light? You said it gives off a more natural light, so wouldn't that give off the same effect? I'm wondering because I am a pretty young artist who doesn't get much money at all, and when I do I want to use it for my actual paint, canvas, etc. Not lighting, I mean I'll invest in it sometime but it'll be awhile so until then couldn't I just painting a natural lit area? Love your art btw, someday I want to be as good as you :)
Alexandra Sevier You can, the problem is that natural light is always changing so you won't have good consistent lighting for much of the day :) For the first MANY years of my art career I painted by daylight and bad indoor lights at night. Not ideal, but we use what's available to us :)
Have you ever encountered a problem when you want to use a dark color and its really transparent if so what do you do about it just add to it? I've had that with a brown from liquitex basics it looks dark but once on a canvas spread a little its pretty see through.
Enrique Green For me its all a layering process. Some of the colors are going to be more translucent than others. Mars black and titanium white are going to be your most opaque. All of the rest not so much. If I had painted a dark blue background and I wanted a red fish on top, I would paint that fish white first, then when that dries, go over with my red. This will give you a much cleaner color. Same thing if my brown is not coming out brown because of the colors under it...paint it white first, then brown over it. You will have this happen with every brand of paint. Within each line, some colors will naturally be more translucent based on the pigments used.
Oh okay haha cool i've been doing that too painting the part white i also found that if you mix the translucent paint with a complementary color that is less translucent (Obviously itll get darker) but it becomes more workable.
My colors for shadows depend entirely on the painting itself. There is no single color that would be used for every instance. The other colors in a painting all play a role in what colors are used for shadows and highlights :)
For the liquitex acrylics, do you typically only buy cyan, magenta, yellow, black, and white, and then mix them? Or do you prefer to buy an array of colors?
Thank you for the tips!!, Your videos are awesome!! I have a question, I tried in one of my paintings for the first time to apply Oils over acrylic painting but around the places where i applied it, the paint spread a stain of oil that is easy to be seen over the matte acrylic, is this a normal thing?, or did i miss something that I should have done before applied it?, is there any way to fix it? ... hope you can help me!! :)
I'd like to try painting on smooth canvas boards, but I'm not familiar with the surface finish I should go for with Fredrix. Linen, cotton, or oil? (I'm a digital artist trying to transition to traditional.)
_Please tell me a little bit in detail about liquitex basics acrylic paints.I know the fact artist acrylics has more pigment than basics. Are liquitex basics as good as liquitex soft body acrylics.I am confused between liquitex basics and liquitex soft body paints. Is it reasonable to pay extra for liquitex soft body acrylics? Is it make a big difference if i use basics than soft body?_
Do you only use the matte finish liquitex or the satin basic liquitex? Whats the all round difference as in how they work to how they come in different sizes? I'm trying to decide which one to get.
I use the liquitex basics. They aren't labeled as specifically matte or satin, but they have a finish somewhere between the two. I don't buy the big jars because those tend to dry out in places, but I do buy the 4 and 8 oz tubes.
About the air brush. What is it good for actually? Would any air brush work for painting or spraying water? I'm trying to buy one for my mom, she likes acrylic painting.
the airbrush is great for illustration and mixed media, or even on its own. you ever look at old movie posters from the 80's? for example beetlejuice, or police academy? those have alot of airbrush in them. it's basically the same thing as a can of spray paint, but safer to use in doors, and it uses air instead of c02's and toxic shit. i like to use it on backgrounds in my paintings, because it can cover large areas without brush strokes. you can also draw something with pencil in black and white and use the airbrush to color it in. look up "drew struzan" and see how he uses the airbrush. you can use it with acrylic, but watercolor actually works better in it since it doesnt clog it up as much. you can also use ink, gouache, dye... possibly oil paint, but i wouldnt try that
_I want to know that can i make liquitex soft body acrylic paint by adding medium to liquitex heavy body acrylic paints. Is there any medium or method you recommend? Can i achieve the same consistency? Please help me :)_
Why don't some paints allow for your lines? Do you think any of your preferences would be different if you were a pure abstract painter? One guy I watch on here said he's going to move to cheaper paints because he doesn't need the more expensive paint for what he does.
Thank you for sharing your favorite art supplies. I was drawn between the acrylic paints, mostly do to price and another artist saying “..beginners are wasting money buying the artist grade paint... Good video, I enjoy using a wet pallet for acrylics
My top 12 favoriete acrylic paint supllies
1 acrylic paint from liquitex basics
2 canvasses from the action. Thats the dollar store of the netherlands
3 long handel brushes from alliexpress
4 a water bowl the one like you have
5 black and white gesso
6 watercolour paper from alliexpress
7 stay wet pallet from masterson
8 paint spatula,s
9 paint sponges
10 paint apron
11 painters eazel
12 a bar of antibacterial soap. I find this a cheaper alternative for the brush cleaner that you have
I have the Artograph Tracer Projector. It wont give you much in the way of finer details (too blurry) but gives you your general outlines :)
I was hoping exactly that the varnish will even it out , but wasn't sure, now I'm calm... thank you for the clearing... greetings!
Have you tried Masters Touch Acrylic paint? I watched a review of several student brands and it favored Masters Touch over liqutex basics.
Yep, I'm not a fan. It's the cheap hobby lobby generic. I don't like the consistency and I don't trust the archival properties of most generic paint.
I'm an artist that plays violin as well
Yep, graphite is next on my to do list. I just have to finish another graphite tutorial to go along with the release of that video the same week. It should be ready in a week or two =D
I don’t know if this is good for hair but I have really long hair and paint gets in it and the paint and dries and the brush cleaner gets it out really well

The airbrush you recommend, does that have to have a compressor?
+Emily Schneider Either an air compressor or a can of air. For the single action the can of air is usually the easiest way to go :)
I only use heavy body. Would you say a lightly watered down, evenly mixed heavy body liquitex gives similar texture as the basics line?
I have to ask, why Viva paper towels for oils, but not acrylic?
I really enjoy your videos. Now I just have to put your tips I've learned to good use on my own canvases.
Mark Schuster The viva don't absorb water quite like regular paper towels. Perfect for oil, but not quite right for water based paints :)
you are a great artist i must say!!!!
but i was wondering what size needle should i buy in airbrush 0.3mm, . 0.5mm or 0.8mm ?
Arvind Kaur The smaller needle makes getting tinier detail easier, so it really depends on what you're going to be painting and the size you plan to work on. I have both a 0.35 and one size larger.
Lachri Fine Art thanks mam for replying
can u please suggest me should i go for this one coz i am really new into dis( www.amazon.in/Aerograph-Hawk-Combo-Airbrush-AG-182P/dp/B00MUI7O1S/ref=fallbacksessionReftaghp_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=08148S7EQN99SCKC5ZAR)..thanks
Would it be possible for you to link me to your entire airbrush set up like the compressor and airbrush itself? I'm really stuck!! Thank you and I think your videos are great :D
Joshua Priestley I list everything I use in this video :) th-cam.com/video/-_RcpxvxHjw/w-d-xo.html
Blush brushes work better than mop brushes because they don't shed so you could try those.
I've been using the same Sim Air compressor for the past 15 years. It's been a great little compressor.
You should do updated versions of theses videos! :)
Love your work and watched many of your vids. I live in the UK and can't find the Fredrix canvas over here, do you know or any of your viewers know of any equivalent to this canvas please. ty......have looked on ebay to find they do some from the US but the P&P are expensive.
Never painted before. Thinking about it. I've seen people mention canvas pads or mixed media sketch book. Do you use those?
What brand is your airbrush kit ? Does it come with the compressor ? I love your paintings !!!!!!!
+iansgigi The info is here :) th-cam.com/video/-_RcpxvxHjw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for the good explanation about items on your list. Could you tell me the size and brand of your 'mop' brush? I didn't know about these but the blending would be so great. thx.
+Kristine Campbell I believe my larger one is 1 1/2". I've actually moved towards using makeup brushes instead as they don't tend to shed as much. It's just hard finding ones that have a long enough and light enough weight handle. If the handle is too short, or heavy it won't work well.
+Lachri Fine Art Good idea! Thanks. I did order a set from Jerry's just to try too.
How do you think Liquitex basics compare with Golden acrylics? Do you prefer one over the other for different projects? Thanks for making these videos, super helpful!
I perfer liquitex basics because of how they dry fairly flat. They just work better for my techniques. Golden acrylics are a great brand though.
Lachri Fine Art thank you! you're the best
This was pretty helpful for me! Love your vids, thanks!
PS. Where did you get those beautiful mop brushes? I’m having a hard time finding those sizes. Thanks
What about table top easels? Great tips by the way! Thanks
Thank you. Your tips is awesome.
I just wanted to say I love your work and these tips were great to learn about since I am a Fine Art Student. Thank you :D
My paint seems to dry a little bit chalky, not bad but slightly. I know some people put a clear gloss finish on theirs but do you recommend anything?
My colors for shadows depend entirely on the painting itself. There is no single color that would be used for every instance. The other colors in a painting all play a role in what colors are used for shadows and highlights :)
Lachri Fine Art is liquitex basics archival?
Yes
For the liquitex acrylics, do you typically only buy cyan, magenta, yellow, black, and white, and then mix them? Or do you prefer to buy an array of colors?
I have a huge selection of colors that I use :)
Great tips, but I can’t find the canvas brush holder with a flap that goes over the brushes. Can you tell me brand, thanks.
Where did you go to school to learn to paint?? I live in NJ, would love to plaint like you someday!!!
tvega81 I taught myself :)
Where do you get a beautiful drop cloth like that behind you? 😉
Would it be possible for you to put a link in the description for the ott light, you use, just so that I know what kind I'm going for here? xD
Thank you for replying Lisa!!
Loved the video! Very helpful!thank you!!
Haha, I've done the same thing with earphones. Every set I have is covered in paint on the cord.
I use masters touch acrylic paints. Are those good acrylic paints??
Great video! Thank you for the tips!
I'm trying to buy one for my mom, she likes acrylic painting.
the airbrush is great for illustration and mixed media, or even on its own. you ever look at old movie posters from the 80's? for example beetlejuice, or police academy? those have alot of airbrush in them. it's basically the same thing as a can of spray paint, but safer to use in doors, and it uses air instead of c02's and toxic shit. i like to use it on backgrounds in my paintings, because it can cover large areas without brush strokes. you can also draw something with pencil in black and white and use the airbrush to color it in. look up "drew struzan" and see how he uses the airbrush. you can use it with acrylic, but watercolor actually works better in it since it doesnt clog it up as much. you can also use ink, gouache, dye... possibly oil paint, but i wouldnt try that
Do you have a tutorial for painting fog ? I don't have an airbrush and I have a few pictures with fog that is love to learn how to do. Thank you
th-cam.com/video/0_4ghkAaEzw/w-d-xo.html :)
@@Lachri thank you!
Awesome vid! Thank you :)
For once a video of painting supplies helps me from youtube lol thanks you explained why or why not to use certain supplies
YAY! I'm glad it helped :D
Can we get an updated one please 🥺
YES!.....The OTT LIGHT far surpasses all other light bulbs!! They're exactly like sunlight.
ABSOLUTELY NO COMPARISONS !!
_I want to know that can i make liquitex soft body acrylic paint by adding medium to liquitex heavy body acrylic paints. Is there any medium or method you recommend? Can i achieve the same consistency? Please help me :)_
+Wizard of the Nights It's not quite the same. You can thin the heavy paint down but the consistency/dry time etc is different.
_Thanks :)_
Can you reccomend a vendor for a fine mist atomizer?
Thanx
This is the one I've been using :) amzn.to/3zpf4ya (amazon affiliate link)
Speaking from experience, It can save you some $$$ to build an easel yourself. Also it helps if your friend is a carpenter!🙂
+Elijah Gersky If I tried building it myself, it would cost me about 5 times as much as just buying one lol.
Why don't some paints allow for your lines?
Do you think any of your preferences would be different if you were a pure abstract painter? One guy I watch on here said he's going to move to cheaper paints because he doesn't need the more expensive paint for what he does.
