Hi Chuck, you are absolutely adorable, but not to worry, I am 93 years young, but having taken up the brush,, again, after almost 30 years. Am finding it not as easy as it once was, I so enjoy watching you & have picked up many tips from you. You are sooooo good & fun to watch. You make it look so effortless. Thanks for allowing an audience to participate. Please, if you can, set up a cozy corner to paint in, I have to share my space with a computer, organ, sewing table, Entertainment center & often don't feel inspired to paint under these conditions. You're a pal.
Greetings from Australia, I love your relaxed easy going attitude, I've been painting for over 50 years, recently experimenting with fluid paints. My criteria for brushes is if it drops a hair into my painting it's bought a one way ticket to the rubbish bin. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, it's so appreciated and regardless of age or how long painting there is always something new to learn.
I love how he doesn’t force people to paint like him, he encourages people to find their own style by saying try different mediums and different thicknesses. Which makes people find their style whether that is more impressionist, realism, palette knife style or maybe even a combination. That is what the art world needs, with all respect to Chuck Black Art(I actually really like his style of painting I actually take some things from his style and work it into my own) but we don’t need thousands of painters like Chuck Black Art.
sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my login password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
Thanks Chuck your information has been a treasure for me. I am 85 years of age and started my art in high school "commercial art and worked in the field for sometime. I retired from the navy but spent most of my life in rodeo and ranch work. My favorite is western art and your videos have been very helpful to me and I will continue to watch . Thanks again for all your help!!
The Best advice. Super comprehendible. He gets right to the points that matter and make the biggest difference! Love this dude. Saved me HOURS of searching through long drawn out TH-cam videos
Ohhhhh this looks like MY LIFE. so much money invested in art supplies and tons of stuff I no longer use, some stuff I still do. It's crazy the amount of money that goes out the drain with ART Supplies. Ive been doing art since I was a child and I am 50yrs old. So imagine the money and EVEN more crazy when you start to get into REAL ARTIST Quality art supplies. Even student grade is expensive but wait till you start with Golden paints, High quality Oils and Canvanses and Coloured Pencils. Markers. It's all worth it but over time you figure it out. Now I work only with acrylics. Yes, you need to Experiment with A LOT of different mediums, they create different looks and styles, 6:25 like he says "you'll learn something" from anything you try out and you can add all these skills to your tool book of experience. BUT be WARNED, this takes years and years of learning, practice, mixing things, just discovering an art style and even learning what you want to use your talent for will take many many years of dead end jobs and schools and money down the drain in the grave yard of art supplies etc. I went to art school, never found a job in my ART field have worked in tons of jobs, never developed a career with art but Im a good artist and never give up. You can never give up. I do my art privately now but have NOW after 20 years doing this (im way before the year of the internet, instagram etc,) I have found a useful place for my art to grow and as a commercial artist that will actually EARN MONEY and I can develop my work and art style (and not just hide it all under the bed) I am applying these days my art, my talent and my grave yard of art supplies in the commercial art field of colouring books and surface design while still holding down my dead end job. BUT yes, it has taken many many years of tears, suffering and thousands of dollars later in supplies. I have been discouraged many times, but you know, fall down 8 times but you always get back up stronger. That is the way this story always plays out. It plays out like this in most artistic careers and no careers are straight and narrow. it's very rare that happens. Not impossible but very very rare. Good luck to you all. Most importantly do not loose heart. Just enjoy your life and do ART. Doesn't have to be for money or anything. If money comes because you want to live of your art great, if not, no problem, just continue your life, your art and Enjoy your lives.
I didn’t start overcoming my “I’m not good at art” feelings until 50. Almost 6 years later, I’ve played with a lot of different mediums (and still am). I’ll be really into trying a style than get into something else. I feel guilty investing $ then not using them much, but this video helped me reframe this as a learning opportunity instead!
I am so happy I found you on you tube, Chuck! I am a newbie, started painting last March after I took my Dad's paints and supplies home. He no longer used them and I was interested. I took off and haven't stopped painting, finally I am starting backwards and looking at you tubes to learn. I had to chuckle the other day while watching one of your you tubes and you started to talk about how you pronounce Dagger. I knew immediately, what you were getting at, "don't cha know"! I am from Minnesota but I live in Colorado now. I struggle with the how fast my paint dries. I often think if I were in MN this would not be as big of a problem. It is the number one issue I have. I waste so much paint because of the rapid drying out here.
I love that I found this video. I have been airbrush painting since 1978. I want to get back into brush painting, but not as much oil painting as before.
do NOT fast forward through this video! Chuck gives lots of tips and quick clips of demos, so you just might learn something. :) Keep at it, Chuck. I'm a big fan.
Thank you so much for taking time to share your art and your experience with us! I love your videos and am learning! Oh, and thank you for letting us visit your work space!
I know this is an older video. And things have maybe changed since then. But thankful for being so thorough about what you do like AND what you don’t like, and the why. It’s very helpful. Thank you for being honest about not needing to be a brand snob also. So many people get hung up on that 🙂
I am so inspired by your videos. I dabble with many mediums, pyrography has been a long time love, but now I am obsessed with acrylic. I have been trying to stock my supplies without breaking the bank and you have no idea how helpful this video was. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of your gift.
Dude, I was positively drooling looking at all your art supplies. No specific questions, I was just looking on and following the journey of wonder that comes of gathering new art supplies and trying them out while learning how each one can be incorporated into your work as an artist(or not); how much fun the expirementation can be. Had a blast watching this ❤
And by the way you are so right it is important to experiment and that is truly the way to learn new possibilities and what makes your soul sing in the process of painting
Yes you are so right that it is good to be curious and experiment - but it is also expensive so good to listen to experiences from other artists - especially of course to artist you like - i totally agree with your experiences with different Golden Acrylics. I definitely prefer heavy body and the fluids - but nice to Exchange experiences
I enjoy listening to your substantive explanation about different kinds of painting, mediums, and other techniques you use to mix paint. I agreed with you when you said experimenting cause that exactly what I do. It keeps us learning every tiny bit of thing. Thank you
Great video. When I was teaching emergency medicine, I always told my students to know what your equipment and medication are capable of coming rather than what your protocols tell you do. The same applies to painting and everything in life. Just because a brush is labeled for oils doesn't mean you can't use it with acrylics. Like you said, try using new things. Keep notes on how they work and use it to your advantage and enjoy the adventure.
Great info Chuck....I try and learn something everyday...right now I'm having trouble painting a willow tree lolol!! I've tossed a few I didn't like and try again. Thank you for all your video's and maybe you'll paint a willow tree one day lolol!! Thanks Chuck.
Thanks, Chuck for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. It's also nice to know that you too have failures. Can't wait to see your video on mixing paints to achieve a particular color. Thanks again. Pat
enjoyed watching this i have tried many different paints over the years and ended up using system 3 well i did before i gave up painting, but you have whetted my appetite to start again. the one thing i found was just using water if you are not careful you can over water your paint and break down the polyma which then makes the paint lift and not stick down so i tend to use mediums to mix my colours as this adds polyma which strengthens the paint. brushes yes i am the same just use the cheap ones ive tried hand made and dont get any better results. thanks for sharing and keep on painting these wonderful pieces.
Thanks so much for sharing! Love the info and your insights as an artist, I have learned quite a bit watching this. I really like how you encourage others to try different mediums and materials and learn from those experiences. That's definitely an important part of the process, to learn from all one's trials and errors. P.S.- that mug in the waterbowl trick is going to be life changing! Thanks so much again!
Thanks Chuck. I think like you do, everyone have to experiment and find what it works best. I use the oldies brushes like you do to create tree leaves, each is unique when it gets old. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I love your art❤️
Well, I’ve just recently found you, so you prolly won’t see this but here goes......I’m having such a problem learning to blend. I’m 70, couldn’t draw a stick, but I don’t care, I want to learn to paint, something new in my golden years. I’ve been a photographer and a crafter, but a blender I’m not! Love you and thank you!
Hi Chuck...this video really helped me learn a great deal about paints and textures. I never thought of using the canvas rolls to make my own surface. I am a new self taught artist and I also have begun using the Golden liquid acrylic blends. I love them. I also noticed that I use the same blue hues that you have been using as well. I also struggled a bit with finding the right brushes and learned now that there are cheap brushes out there as well as expensive that do the same job. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with artists like myself and happy painting.
Your suggestions on trying different media is great. If I had not tried pastels and later oils, I would not be loving the painting process as I am now. I had watercolours and acrylics, but I wasn't in love with them. I've also realised that I prefer pastel pencils to coloured pencils and watercolour pencils over watercolour paints. Next on my list of media to try are alcohol markers, water-soluble graphite, and conte crayons.
+Maria Rev awesome that's so great to hear! Glad that I can be of some help. I couldn't agree with you more, trying and testing is the only way that I learned what I love and that fuels my progress as an artist
Thank you Chuck for sharing this I really feel it was a a learning experience for me. Maybe because I’m less experienced trying to figure out what to put on an empty canvas is daunting sometimes but then also once I have an idea it is time to figure out what paints which brushes do what and how well and you explaining it’s okay to trial and error because it is a growing experience made it feel like my next painting won’t feel so complicated! I really appreciated your tips and candor!! Love your paintings so much and your process. God Bless
Thank you for this video! I was struggling with paint brushes! I have not yet painted anything that I thought was worth keeping. How important is varnishing a finished painting? How do you Varnish your paintings or what do you do to when the painting is finished? Thank you!!!!!
I love your whole attitude about just trying different mediums and viewing it as a learning process. We as artists should try to experiment with the different mediums and art tools available. I love watching different artists who have great info and advice and who are awesome at their preferred mediums/tools of choice such as yourself. thanks for your great advice!
Great vid. So glad to hear/see I'm not the only one doesn't get along with mediums for acrylics. You instruction and advice on fluid acrylics helped me to decide to switch. Also i can completely relate to the broken art at the end. I have been trying to teach myself acrylics over past year and averaging one success to every eight paintings ( birds have been the better ones). Thankful I'm not alone in the failures. Keep up the great work.
Raphael's brushes are my absolute favourite for aquarelle. They're more expensive, but you can reall feel the difference compared to the cheap brushes.
I watched the two episodes. They are excellent. I am trying painiting as a hobby. I am a novice. Thanks for putting out the invaluable stuff. Please share some more of your lessons and tips. One of the questions that intrigues me is what colors to blend together to get some more colors and hues.
I paint in oils, fort pallets I use toughened glass shelves from old refrigerator's. I place felt round dots on the underside so they wont scratch my pure timber polished table. (look through the glass to the dark table underneath shows my true colours on the glass top i'm mixing perfectly true to colour)
I love Dayler Rowney, Tilkon, excallent. I like a stiffer top and soft tip which I use lightly or heavily. I love filbert brushes and Dagger because you can get loads of effects with just these two. I use plastic pots with lids, brilliant if you have bits of paint you want to keep from your canvas, no waste then you can mix them up to make lovely colours in the pots. I keep chewing a gum pots with snap tops free from my husband brilliant for mixing paint and to keep the paint wet, when you want to make that cupped or take that lengthy phone call. Small gift jam pots brilliant to. I love the soft body paints too, Golden liquitex and Atilier. I use some heavy body Dayler though.
I've never tried oil over acrylic, but I'm going to!! I found a set of oil paints for a really cheap price (like $5) at a garage sale, thinking they were acrylic, so I never used them. Well it's time to give that a try!!! I haven't watched for a while, but you are definitely one my favorite TH-cam Artists.
Hi You are a great artist with a great and humble heart by sharing your life experience work wich artists dont really share and im so grateful of you to share your experience with us, i use to do painting with oil i tried other mediums but finally found oil is for me but u work inspired me to use acrylic and im goin to start painting again Thank you very much keep painting 😁👍🏻
I just recently found your videos. Thank you so much for putting this content out there and sharing with us. It is so appreciated. I showed my 5 year old who is also art obsessed one of you tutorials. She loved it, so I just ordered a print for her as a surprise. I can’t wait.
Thank you so much Tara and it really is my pleasure!!! I can't wait for her to get it, I'll send it out asap. Let me know if you guys ever have any questions
Very, very informative, valuable and helpful video! I subscribed. Thank you so much for your laid back, and unfazed attitude, which many will find useful since we artists all get stressed out sometimes when it comes to failures.; and especially when something that we have used for years is discontinued, or out of stock.
50+ years ago, I started out with Grumbacher, which was the most popular paint of the time. Long story short, I now use Gamblin 1980 and of all the several (oil) paints I have tried, this one is in my opinion, the pinnacle; the best.
Hey Chuck, a couple more questions if you don't mind! First, any advice on minimizing glare with glossy varnish? I find it to be really distracting, but like the intensity of color the gloss provides. Also, I was wondering the differences between when you use the Kamar varnish and Crystal clear. I'm mainly looking for something to unify the sheen and provide a protective layer that can be cleaned.
There's really nothing you can do except use a finish that isn't glossy. I personally love the depth a glossy painting has so I like to stick with that regardless of the glare. The Crystal clear is actually not a varnish, just an acrylic sealant. The one thing you could do is spray it from further away and when it goes on it'll be more granulated and less of a glossy look. My advice is to try a bunch of different types and pick your favorite :)
You may like something like a satin..? It's really tough to recommend what will work for your individual likes as I've learned that each artist is different. Hope all that helps!
Thank you for sharing these videos, Chuck. There aren't too many artists at your level that actually share info like you do. Does canvas glued to hardboard last longer than store-bought canvas? And do you make your own prints?
No problem and thanks Daylen! I tend to think it'll hold up longer. I like the idea that it can't be poked like stretched could so easily. It's also easier for me to paint on a hard surface. Yes I do print my own unless it's a larger canvas print
Just switched to acrylics from water color. Using your ideas to research what I should be looking for in supplies. Have a modest budget so I am being careful. Thank you for your talent and sharing.
I appreciate the info on the difference between the liquid & soft body acrylics. I was considering these or the Golden open acrylics and now feel that the soft body paints will work best for me.
Nice to see you use fairly affordable art supplies that are available where I live. I watch tutorials on youtube as I'm just starting off painting and they always stress buying the good quality stuff and the brands they use are pretty expensive where I live (because they're imported). I figure there's nothing wrong using the cheap stuff to start off with. I figure it's not what you have it's how you use it 🤭 Love your videos because they are very encouraging.
After finding your site I decided to try painting again ,I had a few lessons from friend years ago I enjoyed it very much . I really enjoy the way you teach and love your paintings wish I could Paint like that . Nevertheless I struggle on learning and enjoying every minute .like you said I decided to try a new medium oils so I painted the moon in oils I did not compare with yours . I struggled with the clouds and getting the colour right ,I never seem to be happy with any thing I paint and always see. flaws .Thanks for sharing with us
Dude, the whole point of following you on these teaching videos, is to not only to learn how paint with this type medium, but get ahead of the learning curve. Every part of what you teach is a experiment for us and we learn every single time. The purpose of watching an experienced person is so you don't have stumble over the obstacles. In today's economy, learning this way, from Videos is the way to go before you invest money into supplies that you will end up put a side for what ever reason. I bet you wish, you had someone like you to learn from when you started out.
Well, if I didn't have to learn on my own I might not know the things I do now. Experimenting is some of the best teaching we can do for ourselves! :) Glad you love the videos!
the best container for water is a TUPPERWARE PIC-A-DELI put something on the bottom to hold the strainer piece up a few inches (I use a pair of shot glasses) then insert the strainer piece and fill 3/4 full with your water. I also add a few drops of dish soap. the strainer acts as a gentle scrubbing surface because it is plastic and doesn't have sharp edges. it also allows the paint sediment to gather on the very bottom and not get disturbed and stirred back into the rinsing water above.
Thanks for clearing up the differences in hard body, soft body and Fluid acrylics. I've been trying to paint a vehicle with liquitex hard body paints and cannot get the look of shiny metal. I'll try both soft body and fluid to see if it helps. Very helpful video. Thank you.
THe tips about holding brushes and pallets are worth watching the whole video! I've experimented with paints and am also a fan of Golden. So far, I use just one blue, but now will look at more hues. ..
Thanks for the bowl tip - I usually have two mugs, but your system is better. Also - tip for other artists - don't use a mug with flow release or anything toxic in it, I have nearly come close to ingesting it by mistaking it for my coffee cup while painting. Best to use a squeeze bottle with a cap.
Finally found you! Wanted to see what people use and this is the best video by far explaining what you use. As a very newbie painter...decided I wanted to try acrylics. I didn't think I could because I can't even draw. But many hours over video tutorials I have come away with a bit more info. Unfortunately I have spent a bit more money on trying to find out what to use...canvas, paints, brushes and there is a plethora of supplies out there. I decided on arteza acrylic set...it is in my opinion very difficult to paint with...the dry time is really, really quick...I have managed to struggle through with this paint on 5 paintings. So without going on about me, can you please show your technique on blending and mountains...I am painting from a photo for my granddaughter and am struggling with the orange clouds and the mountains
This puts such a different slant to all the "what do you use and recommend" videos! It shouldn't be about trying to get a shortcut from someone who has a lot of experience! Make your own mistakes and learn from them. You are right! It's ok to get someones opinion on a product but your experience may be different. Great job! Thanks.
I like this video, I never took any art classes and am self taught, it gave me great idea's on some paints to try in the future. As far as the studio goes I have a room just for my art and have the same thing with brushes, I do not by expensive and I try different one until I find something that works for me. I love your work and have learned a lot thanks for sharing.
I love watching your videos. You are an amazing painter. I started painting in my senior years, and have a lot to learn and little time to learn it in! Question, how do you keep acrylics from drying out.
Hi Sandra! To keep acrylics from drying, I use Grumbacher’s “acrylic retarder”. I add it to my hard body paints, dip my brush in it, or brush it on my canvas.
Hey Chuck , thank you so much for all this information. I’ll try some of the paints you proposed. ‘One’ question: Which is for you the ideal workingplace? (Which light do you prefer? A window with a view ? South oriented ? Cosy ? )
Good stuff! Very informative. I use mainly Winsor & Newton acrylics, but I find I always (almost) loosen them up with medium or water. I may try some soft body or liquid to see if that’s better for me. I also discovered Liquitex markers! I use them for sketching the composition for plein air paintings, or to mark needed adjustments in studio paintings. For future videos I would like to see how you use the blending brushes. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing! Also, I feel a lot better about breaking up a few paintings because they just irrated me to the point I could not look at them after keeping them a month or two!
🤣 I wanted you to know I about died watching this video. I choked on my water when you showed the painting you ripped in half when you were frustrated. It's nice to know I have a kindred spirit when it comes to dealing with frustration.
I love your paintings, but mostly, your willing to teach what you do, step by step. I have been learning a lot. Thanks so much. Yes, I have a question: How do you apply the medium? When to apply it? Do you use to create transparency over dry oil? Can it be replaced by the turpentine as you need to thin the paint?
I live in the Caribbean, and here the open acrylics from golden work wonderfully, specially since oil painting here its horrible because of the humidity

Looking at all the supplies laid out......brought me so much joy
Its refreshing to know I'm not the only one that will chuck an almost finished piece due to mistakes. Thank you for sharing your information!
I was smiling the first few minutes, I have it all, tried it all, love it all...

I love the idea of using plastic wrap on the palette to make clean up a cinch! Saves soooo much time for clean up!
Great info Chuck....I try and learn something everyday...right now I'm having trouble painting a willow tree lolol!! I've tossed a few I didn't like and try again. Thank you for all your video's and maybe you'll paint a willow tree one day lolol!! Thanks Chuck.
love your brush wash system...ya hoo thanks alot
This is so helpful. I’m learning so much from you! Just realized you are from MN too! Thanks for sharing all your wisdom, I love your work!
Thank you sooo much for doing this video!! It really answered a lot of my questions. I will definitely look forward to your additional videos!!
This video was very helpful, thanks for your honesty and knowledge. I am new at this so your experience has helped me to be more patient with myself.
Thanks, Chuck for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. It's also nice to know that you too have failures. Can't wait to see your video on mixing paints to achieve a particular color.
Thanks again.
Pat
Thanks Pat, and you are most welcome! I appreciate it all!!
I would love to see that video too it would be a great help to me. Love you're paintings xx
enjoyed watching this i have tried many different paints over the years and ended up using system 3 well i did before i gave up painting, but you have whetted my appetite to start again. the one thing i found was just using water if you are not careful you can over water your paint and break down the polyma which then makes the paint lift and not stick down so i tend to use mediums to mix my colours as this adds polyma which strengthens the paint. brushes yes i am the same just use the cheap ones ive tried hand made and dont get any better results. thanks for sharing and keep on painting these wonderful pieces.
I just found you and am so glad I did. Thank you for sharing. Could you demo how you cover your board with the canvas from start to finish.
Appreciate all that, Sandy! I couldn't agree more. And of course it's my pleasure
Great to hear Claude and thanks for sharing! 1 out of 8 sounds about right, great job maintaining a positive attitude!! :) Thanks again
Great video chuck! Great advice. Haven’t seen a video like this yet. So honest
I paint in oils, fort pallets I use toughened glass shelves from old refrigerator's. I place felt round dots on the underside so they wont scratch my pure timber polished table. (look through the glass to the dark table underneath shows my true colours on the glass top i'm mixing perfectly true to colour)
Everybody is different. Like all the supplies out there !!
Hi
You are a great artist with a great and humble heart by sharing your life experience work wich artists dont really share and im so grateful of you to share your experience with us, i use to do painting with oil i tried other mediums but finally found oil is for me but u work inspired me to use acrylic and im goin to start painting again
Thank you very much keep painting 😁👍🏻
I am like you on the Blues! So many blues!
THANK YOU for this video. I sprayed my acrylic painting with your preferred spray and it's a miracle. Cool.
could you do another video on how exactly you mounted the smooth canvas on the board? and what you do with it once the painting is done? please?
Thank you for sharing these videos, Chuck. There aren't too many artists at your level that actually share info like you do. Does canvas glued to hardboard last longer than store-bought canvas? And do you make your own prints?
No problem and thanks Daylen! I tend to think it'll hold up longer. I like the idea that it can't be poked like stretched could so easily. It's also easier for me to paint on a hard surface. Yes I do print my own unless it's a larger canvas print
Thank you Chuck. I am so inspired by your work. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video , this is just what I needed :) You truly are an inspiration to budding artists like myself :)
No problem thats great to hear! Thank you
After finding your site I decided to try painting again ,I had a few lessons from friend years ago I enjoyed it very much .
:) Glad you love the videos!
the best container for water is a TUPPERWARE PIC-A-DELI
put something on the bottom to hold the strainer piece up a few inches (I use a pair of shot glasses) then insert the strainer piece and fill 3/4 full with your water. I also add a few drops of dish soap. the strainer acts as a gentle scrubbing surface because it is plastic and doesn't have sharp edges. it also allows the paint sediment to gather on the very bottom and not get disturbed and stirred back into the rinsing water above.
My biggest needs are lighting in you workspace and also blending and scrambling brushes.
Ever tried paint markers? I loooooove them. Molotow, Liquitex, and Montana brand paint markers rock.
You are AWESOME Chuck!!! I continue to learn so much from you in my painting, thanks so much for everything you do, You ROCK!😊
I like your honest opinions on the paints.Thanks.
So far, I use just one blue, but now will look at more hues. ..
Great advice, thank you. The piece you broke in half looked like it could work as a diptych!
Thank you so much Chuck. I appreciate you doing this. I'm new to acrylics. I use oils and definitely needed this.
All my best
Rudy paints
Great to hear, thanks Rudy!
Thanks! I'll start painting and I'd like to make it my full time job.
Loveg this! You saved me a ton of money!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I just discovered your videos and really like your method of teaching. This is very informative, thank you.
Thanks!
awesome information for beginners like myself !!! You are a very gifted and talented artist, thank you for your videos !
Hai Chuck. You are great God bless you always xx 💕❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great info and NOW I know how you set up your palette....going to order some cellophane as I hate to clean up the acrylic. Thanks!!!
You are awesome to share all of this with us! Thank you so much!!
Thanks great information been watching you a few months now love ❤️ your work and channel!
Thats super interesting, i never thought the paints would differ depending on where you are
Amazing video helped a lot!!! I want to ask how can i keep my oil paint in the pallet? Thankyou! 💞🇬🇷
Hii chuck u r my teacher now
I'm very happy to learn it🙂
I love paintingz and i want to learn more
Thanks Sana great to have you here!!
