Really liked the lesson. I appreciate the ramblin-on process of doing a lick, rehears once or twice and move on to the next lick. Thanks fir the lesson.
Hey Randell thank you for watching and for the positive comments. If you like this stuff stick around and subscribe. I plan to do much more of it over time.
Thank you David. I'm a testament to the notion that you can get better at singing if you work at it. Range and strength all have improved over the years. Appreciate you checking out the channel. ~Mike
thanx for the lesson i always wondered why the intro i played sounded kinda lame, i had the notes right but the feel was wrong..I was picking every note..straight pentatonic from the 12-15th frets, but i see your way with the slides & pull offs is the corrrect way sounds more like the recording...btw the 1st solo is not classic Dickey Betts, but actually was performed by another cat by the name of Les Dudek..I don't know how he came to do it, but he did..check him out on the tube he's great.
There's a lot of conversation in the chat about this...the song was written and performed in G but when the final studio recording came out they probably sped up the tape a bit to increase the bpm and when you do that everybody goes sharp and that's why it sounds like it's closer to Ab than G on the record. Thanks for watching!
Hey! For you who want tabs, go to Jerrys guitar bar videos on you tube. Then download the tabs. I used both videos.(Jerry's& Mike"s) They are close. Jerry is slower but Mike gives a better rhythm. So, 5yrs late....Thanks Mike. Great job!!!!
@@mr.yellowstrat3352 FWIW, I just watched a couple live videos, and Dickey and Dan could clearly be seen playing G,D,C and E, and I thumped along on my bass, playing those roots, and everything worked. I can;t speak to how it was written or originally recorded, or the tuning, but in the 70-s and 80's they seemed to play it live in G standard.
Thanks Mike.He does another great lesson on Vanderbilly called I cant tell you why by the Eagles.Would it be possible to also upload this on youtube. Thanks for the Ramblin man upload
Gavin Foster Hi Gavin thanks for watching. I'm afraid when I switched computers 1+ years ago to mac I lost some files and don't have that one to upload. You'll have to get it from guitar.com, which has joined forces with the old vanderbilly.com.
Apologies, but I was just frustrated, surely you've been frustrated whilst trying to learn something? But yeah, ...I am ready to play it, It's just if you song play it slowly** so those who are trying to figure out the chord pattern before the next chord appears, which is utterly frustrating. The Solo's were fine, why? Because you were calling out the notes. Thank you anyway, for taking the time to type it out. Really appreciate it, and again, sorry - Was just frustrated.
Thanks for posting this. Great song. I'm working on this solo. Can you tell me if the chords that go behind the solo are the verse or chorus chords or something different. The solo seems a bit longer than either the verse or chorus.
At least I didn't thumb it down. I was in a country band at the time and learning dozens of songs. I guess I was a bit impatient and spoiled by higher quality videos. I shouldn't complain about a free instructional video, but as I recall, this video in particular drove me nuts with his style of instruction. As another has mentioned, it's too fast, and as I have mentioned, his disregard for timing made it very difficult to learn the licks.
Thanks for the harmony parts, saved me about 1/2 day trying to figure it out myself! Multi-tracked the parts on my new little Tascam DP0008EX, pretty rough but getting there!: soundcloud.com/steve-allbritton/ramblinwav/s-WBe7t Thanks again!
Good job on the lesson. Why is it in G#(or Ab) on the studio recording? That is a really odd key for a band like the Allman Bros. to play in. I have heard that the Beach Boys would speed up the tape after recording to make the vocals higher and the tempo faster... I wonder if that's what happened with Ramblin Man.
Thanks for watching Frank and I appreciate the compliment. Not sure why they recorded it sped up but yeah. But I've never seen the song written out in G#. It's always G and that is the way that they played it live over all these years. Sometimes when I practice and jam along to a classic rock mix and just play whatever tunes come up I run into this problem where you have to retune either up or down from standard A=440 cause that's what some bands did when they recorded the tune or the album.
At 2:34 you suggested you couldn't play both for the very last note. First, the second to last would NOT be strings one and two on the twelfth frets, but rather string one on 12 and string two on 13. THEN, if you want to try playing both, slide back so your first finger, still on string one, rests on the tenth fret, while your second or third finger rests on string two, fret twelve. Great stuff. Keep up the good work.
I just watched it again and it played all the way through without any issues...it was loaded in my google+...I heard these guys are doing their last tour this year.
Let me put it on the list. I've got it down but it has been a while and I will need to work on it a bit. There are a lot of "characteristic" and "signature" Dickey Betts style riffs in the solo. It's worth re-learning it.
i enjoyed and it was helpful but i must ask... why did you stop naming the notes halfway through the solo? again, i want to say i liked it but some friendly criticism is in order and i think some more consistency would have made it an even better video.. thank you

12, 13, 13,15, 12...oh, did I mention which string? no...I'm just shouting numbers so you have to back your video up 35 times to get a single 8 bar phrase. Dude, I can buy the sheet music for this, if you're going to give a lesson like this, seriously, slow down a bit.
Hey...I have NO idea what happened to this video. Something is different about it in the last couple of weeks. The size and ratio of horizontal to vertical pixels has changed. Perfect. Thanks! Dickey is a master of phrasing. He really pulled all you could out of these boxes.
Thanks for the comment Frank and thanks for checking out the channel.
Thanks so much for sharing this lesson! the way that Dickey swims his solos on that C major key is so exquisite!

Nice job. Not quite as hard to play the solo as I thought. It's a very tasteful solo in this song. Thanks for posting.

Hey I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching. Come back around sometime, there will be more.
@vdbdg Awesome! You know what - now that you said that this tune needs to be in my band's set list too!!
Thank you very much for checking out my channel and I'm glad you are getting something out of it.
Chris thanks a lot for posting and I'm glad you liked the video. I hope it helped you learn the tune.
I believe it’s actually played in A flat but I play it in G since I’m on the keys for this one. Great lesson and explanation!

I appreciate you watching and thanks for the comment. I will have to go back and take a look at that.

This song is not in the Key of G.
This is in Key of C with G mixolidian cord progression.
Great lesson but isn't it too low? I thought the chords were: G#, F#, C# and D#
Yah the original is tuned up a full step. Low E starts as F. But thanks man

Only bad when out of tune. ;-)
