In this lesson we will be studying the Duane Allman solo in Stormy Monday. Be familiar with G pentatonic major and minor fingerings.
It is great, but is it not a given that the solo should be played in full either before or after the lesson breakdown. It would seem the most logical thing to do. I am a little bit more experienced and would pick it up reasonably quickly.
You are the first person I've seen do this right, Thank You, this has always been a rough song for me, and I've been playing for years to get it right, thanks I'll check out your csgacademy.
Awesome! Let us know if you have any questions
YEP you got it right
How about a lesson on part 2 and dicky betts solo along with the fills, thanks!
Excellent video I’m working on it thanks
Good lesson. I wanted to hear the whole solo, with background track, then the lesson down.
The ONLY vid to get it right. When I say right, I mean across the board-tone, vintage SG, and nuance. Well done.
Wow Kevin! Thanks for the great comment
Outstanding tone. Duane was my absolute favorite. You have captured that classic tone. What are you playing through?
Matchless Clubman 35
Very useful study. How about part 2 of the solo? Would also be great to be able to purchase individual pieces, video/tabs. Nice job!
You can purchase most tabs for our youtube lessons at centerstagetabs.com. If you would like part to go to csgacademyplus.com
always thought it was slide for that matter, if it isn't then, yeah, pretty smooth alright
Excellent video thanks. I discovered some differences in my "version" of Duane's solo. I never really ever sat and copied it but rather just played it from "memory." Oh yeah I almost forgot.. I was at those Fillmore East Shows. Both nights. Elvin Bishop Group and Johnny Winter/Rick Derringer did great shows those nights too. A friend was producing the "Johnny Winter And" Live Album (the double album with the blank 4th side) from those shows so we got free tickets. Did you ever do "part II?"
David, wow that is a great story! Actually there for the Fillmore East shows! You can find part 2 on our site at csgacademy.com
@@CenterStageGuitar Yeah I am an "old timer" guitarist at 70. Still rockin' on though. I keep one of my Music Man Silhouettes sitting here next to my living room chair so I can play whenever the spirit moves me. I do an eclectic mix of really long jam style tunes ala Dead/Allman's/Quicksilver, etc. I have to admit that it really has been a very "long strange trip."
David Bennett sounds cool, you should post your mixes somewhere
[1:25] I think you meant to say G minor pentatonic, because that is what you showed. You actually said "G pentatonic major", which might have some other meaning. Great lesson otherwise.
Nailed it sir! Thanks for the different camera angles as well, great lesson! Searching the fretboard for some of these melodic notes he is playing and basically it’s three positions with that awesome whole note 1/2 note bending, very tasty as u said 16:57 16:57
I've been looking for this for 7 years! I'm 60, my older brother always says, "Your Stormy Monday needs more spice." And this clear video's got the spice! Thank you!
will be a cold day before this solo is surpassed. brilliant.
great but you missed the most difficult part in the end with bends
Very nice! You’ve got that sweet dwee doo he had. That honking tone is damn close to how they sounded.
Cool lesson. Is the tab just the notes or does it give the timing too?
Martin, the tabs are complete with standard notation as well. So, yes, you get the timing as well. Let me know if you have any other questions
Great work..... I got to see Duane play 3 times..... amazing guitar player.....taken too soon......what kind of amp are you playing through.....
Nice job showing the nuances of Diana's bending techniques.. All done in a way that keeps one's attention to all that is needed to understand this style of expression. I particularly enjoyed not having to sit through needless babbling. So many "instructors" want to blow their own horn rather than teach viewers. I find the approach demonstrated in this video should be required viewing by anyone posting an instructional video as a standard to emulate.
Watching you do this now makes me realize again just how great and advanced it was way back then

Great lesson. The link to the TABS for purchase doesn't work. Cab you please direct me to the TABS for Stormy Monday Pt. 1 &2, please?
Duane was a slide player, he adds that mindset to his free hand solos ,the trick is what you think of playing you apply to the instrument naturally.
Sorry to ask again but what are you using here? I saw someone mention a vintage SG but what amp, speakers, etc? This woody tone is insane.
Nice job. That lick at 14:05 I've seen played so many different (wrong) ways... but you've really nailed it. Thank you!
Any tabs? I can’t keep up. Great sound
The tabs for our lessons can be found at centerstagetabs.com
Did you ever do the part 2? Please do soon if not!
These are great lessons, but would be so much more powerful if you called out pitches and not just strings and position. That would internalize the note choices. ,but thanks for your posts. They are helpful.
What great tone you have!
What amp are you playing through? And are you using any pedals?
A work in progress.
Man, I lived and breathed Live at the Fillmore and these bending techniques. Dickey sparkles and skips across the top of the stream, and everything breathes and flows together. Duane steps in, stands up, and pushes back against the current, and everything turns in a new direction.
Interesting take. Duane's solo comes first.
@@suttletovah Agreed on Stormy Monday. My notion of Duane & Dickey's styles is just a general statement. Thanks!
@@jimmanire3646 In that case, it's a great, poetic description of their styles/tones. Cheers!
When is part2
Great Presentation!
Hey man, that's one useful guide. That sounds like Duane. Great.
Very nice bro.
Did you do that by ear?
Great lesson thank you so much.
Duane's solo is basically 4 notes on 2 strings ;
@james crowe - I am ;; If you watch closely asshole - you will see that most of the solo is played in the 3rd position of the pentatonic gm scale on 2 strings like I said ; so why don't you simply go fuck yourself .
@@WileECoyotey i'd like to see your video.
Where is part 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
csgacademyplus.com
Always come back here for a refresher....great job as always..... Duane was a great slide player as well as a great lead player..... he could do it all .....I'll never forget the first time I heard his lead on Loan me a Dime with Boz Scaggs....it sent chill's up my spine ....can you do that tutorial? Thanks again for taking the time to do this for all us Duane worshipers.....
How about Bass with Tabs ?
Your tone is so spot on! Well done!
You're one of the few instructors who got it right. Many say that the solos are Dickey Betts on this song, but Duane all the way!
each take a solo Duane first then Dickey
You really nail his tone and feel, man. Very good job.
Par deux?
It's very informative and easy to understand content!
part 2?
YO PART 2 PLSS
When can we expect par deux......
John, you can fins part 2 on our website at csgacademyplus.com
Thanks immensely for this lesson.
Am I missing something? Lots of these Stormy Monday” videos but all miss the solo starting at 6:50
th-cam.com/video/Bqa1s4jhkQ8/w-d-xo.html
Were Duane using open E on this song?
No it is in standard tuning
Thank you for this video! And I'll have a question about the sound ... how to get that sound ? He played on gibson sg and amp fender I think, right ? And what overdrive or pedal did he use ? Thanks
Pretty sure Duane played a 59 les Paul With 2 50 watt Marshall bass heads and a 4x12 cabinet with JBL-D120F speakers and a fuzz pedal I believe.
sell part 2

willing to pay you for part 2 please
I have both Duane and Dickey's full solos with tab on my channel.
@@RickMcCargar yeah but yours aren’t too accurate
@@johnluhm5598 Says guy with nothing on his channel
@@johnluhm5598 You're full of it.
@@RickMcCargar not trying to sound like a jerk I don’t post videos but have been playing for 20 +years seen Allmans live a bunch and listened to all those solos 100’s of times I can tell when it sounds right on versus 90% close but yeah you’re the man
What amp are you running thru? Pedals? Nice tone!
Hey Shawn. I am using a Matchless Chieftain with no pedals. Just a little gain on the amp.
Thanks!
That's what I like. Other players tutorials have the guitar too fuzzed out and distorted, which can complicate trying to decipher what they are playing.
