    When using the 1.5 v battery, I don’t think you need to adjust the ISO by “2 stops”, I would guess more like two thirds (2/3) of one stop. I could be wrong so please correct me if I am. I have used a Wein Cell Battery in these older cameras that took the old mercury batteries, and they give a voltage of 1.35v which gives perfect exposure reading, provided the meter is accurate in the first place. The wein cell is easily obtainable from certain outlets or eBay or Amazon. You can compare the meter reading to a meter that is giving correct exposures to determine the accuracy of this Pentax meter. Have fun.

      You are likely right in that opinion. I have read a range of opinions on the subject, but the common thread is that the amount of adjustment depends on the circuitry of the camera, or lightmeter in this case. Also, voltage of these alkaline batteries decline over time, hence it is really chasing a moving target. I would probably test this out at different ISO compensations in another episode to see what would be the best compensation, since there is very little actual real life tests done to verify this.

      @@retrotechmall I know that I am late at the party :) But you can also buy an adapter for around £12 (don't know dollars) which converts standard 1.5 volt button cells into 1.35 volt batteries. A lot cheaper than weinn cells in the long term since normal button cells are really cheap.

    Thanks for the clip!!!. I just picked up a complete S3 camera set with Asahi lenses and meter. I was just wondering how to use the meter and here I found it.

    Nice Instagram pics. Just got a good deal on a Spotmatic with a Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 and 135mm f3.5 SMC. The tech informed me the light meter didn't work, but I couldn't not try a new Wein Cell MRB400 1.35v anyway......and yeah, it doesn't work. LOL, I just had to try.

    Fantastic video!!!!! I was looking at a H1a that has an operational external light meter on it. Most likely i will take some exposures with it but ultimately the camera will go into my collection .
    Thanks for a great video!!!

    Got lucky that the Asahi Pentax S1 was already in your collection - cool. One suggesting in film, as you get to the end for the actual demo - placing the camera on a tripod would free your fingers/hands up for lightmeter adjustments.

    Sweet gift and in such good condition! You can still get a 1.35 volt battery called Wein cell. They don't last very long usually about 6mo after pulling off the tape. God Bless

      I'm sure the meter can be recalibrated to take standard hearing aid batteries, as is the case with most of the older mercury-battery meters.

    Hi Ben,
    Love this video. Got myself a Pentax SV with exposure meter to start shooting analog for the first time. This video will help me a lot. Though, do you believe I also need to adjust the film type dial (top left of the camera) with 2 stops when I use a 1.5V battery?

    • @retrotechmall
      @retrotechmall  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great! Frankly, my tests with other cameras using a replacement battery have given me results that were decent even though the voltage used was higher than the designed voltage. For low-lit situations, color film especially has a tendency to look muddy in the shadows, so I would recommend you make that adjustment then. However for well-lit settings, this may not be necessary as film has a pretty good dynamic range when the lighting is good.

    Really cool. My Pentax 1000 meter died. I was looking light meters on You tubr. Made for cameras with dead internal meters

    Hi Ben. Thank you for sharing.
    I have the later version of this meter for my Pentax SL. The wheel and the ISO dial moves when I turn the shutter speed. It doesn't seem right but I have no reference to how it should be set. I would have thought that the ISO once set should be fixed. Does the meter that you have have a fixed ISI dial ?. I can't see how to set the ISO dial so that it is fixed.

      Great. I hardly ever hear the SL mentioned. My first Pentax was the SL and clip on meter. Later I got the Spotmatic, ES, ME, MX, LX, 67, 645 and digital spotmeter 😊

    Hey i have a similar one and it has a little protective rubber pad inside the light meter to protectthe camera from scratches , looks like yours is missing that

    Hey there. You seem very knowledgeable about Pentax cameras and need some questions answered. I have a PENTAX ASAHI 49MM FANTASIC color filter, but I know nothing about it. I can't find any information about it online as well.

    • @retrotechmall
      @retrotechmall  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What color is the filter?

    • @thomaseland3136
      @thomaseland3136 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Although the early Pentax cameras used a 42mm lens mount many lenses had a 49mm filter size. Often a PL polarising filter was left on to protect the lens.

    Pentax K 1000
    The Chinese assembled one s
    Fine if in good condition...
    They work as well as any
    But don't buy one with a gritty feel to the wind lever or the fresnel marked or the meter needle furry or the prism flaked.
    Not worth repair costs
    The earlier Spotmatic types are fine but I wouldn't buy in poor condition or very dirty inside
    Unless you love re condition ing them
    These ones are worth the work.

    Why not use the cameras built in light meter?

    • @retrotechmall
      @retrotechmall  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This light meter was designed for the Asahi Pentax S1, S3 and SV versions, which do not have light reading capabilities built in.

      First Pentax with built in meter was Spotmatic which came after these earlier models.
