hello hi, as a fellow Singaporean I took my fair share of MRT to everywhere I want, and since I'm a train fan, I decided to make a video of me ranking the sounds each train makes.
do let me know if you guys agree or disagree with my list, and feel free to come up with your own in the comments! :D
all the clips in this video do not belong to me, I do not own any of the clips taken in this video. All clips used belong to their respective owners.

why C151 sounds like a Hong Kong MLR?
8:35
When the c751 reach station it sounds very similar to c651 event the beginning
I am so aware of this train 13:11 c651 SIE
I lived in Singapore from 1999 to 2010 and the C751B was always favorite train, mainly because of its different motor sound and how rare it was compared to the C151 and C651 which I rode on mostly at the time. Riding a C751B was like a special treat for me.
all the C751s are good
I was a C651 fan, but I agree the C751B was also really special
12:00 So happy to see C751A (NEL) in the top 5 list, I really love the sound that it makes.
Me too
Also top 3 list
me too
man 1st place is very fitting, nothing beats unique old motor sounds! It's been awhile since I rode it tho
Me too
6:58 both trains departed in sync lol
Yeah
my rankings
11) C151 ABC (To common)
10) C151 PMSM
9) CT251
8) C830 ( TOO LOUD)
7) C751A ( To Me quite basic)
6) C751C
5) C830C
4) C751B
3)C951/A
2)C151 (The OG)
1) C651 ( DA BEST)
I think the same also
C830C? I think I know why you say that C830C is noisey is because of the tunnel... Same to me
I mean C830
Meanwhile here in Paris we still have 1959 rolling stock 😂😂
@@jinweiteo4561 grrrrr what ?
😂😂 lol
@@jinweiteo4561 the heck do you mean grrr…
Doesn’t Pasir is rhyme with Paris?
@@jinweiteo4561 why must u grrr there’s nothing to grrr about
3:32 well actually i like that sound, because some of 2 level VVVF has that kind of synchronous sound, and also same to the CT251. i like japanese VVVFs
note: the synchronous sound was 9 pulses
Japanese VVVFs are really special in my opinion.
@@muhammedibrahimsarfraz8770 ikr! or for example like Hitachi IGBT, it has their typical raising frequency and other carrier frequency (200 hz) while decelerating
@@indra144 Well the Hitachi IGBT isnt a frequency raise in decelaration, and this has been proven by the British Class 465/1s, which have Hitachi IGBT motors. Still though. they sound great!
7:06 i find this one fun
Yes, I agree with you when you said "The C951 is one of my most favourite stock of all" the downtown line is my favourite MRT line!
yes, the train is very futuristic!
@@Kayhsentong Same, I took the Downtown Line once (forgot which station lol), and liked the look and feel of the trains!
@@Kayhsentong More futuristic than even the second trains on the circle line that entered service after the C951.
The Downtown line is modern in a futuristic sci fi way whilst the Thomson East Coast line is modern in a more natural and eco friendly way.
Interestingly London's '09 & S stocks make a lower pitch although they're only slightly older, & made by the same company
Same
I like the Alstom rolling stock on both NEL & CCL. Bum hugging and no risk of sliding when the train brakes abrubtly
my favourite is siemens c651 too! Its motor is lovely.
at 5:02 the trains are really awesome
Ever since I was a kid, I always loved how they sounded like violins.
I’m not sure which ones I like the best. I would have to choose c151 in 9th, CT251, C751c, KHI c151, C751B and I gotta admit the C651 does sound beautiful. Nice video btw! 👍😀
Finally someone who appreciates the sound of the trains
12:11 i ever ride this when i was vacation in singapore from 2018 from indonesia and i ride the north east line for the first time after i enjoyed riding the east west line, circle line and north south the line i havent rode is downtown line, and LRT lines the sound of the north east line i was like "oh is this train can shift gears or is it like they use lamborgini gears" sometines i went to other countries and some MRT had a same sound as north east line MRT
12:20 Please note the 1996 London stock has GTO Alstom, while the C751A has OniX IGBT.
The GTO requires more switching frequency changes because they cannot go very high in frequency, hence the number of additional "steps".
It is true that the sound is very close, and it is strange because the OniX has existed for several years already, and the sound is different (our Z20900s date from 2001 for the first ones).
7:06 i like this one
You surely will love the accelerating sound of our german class 423 commuter trains 😊
3:25 it kind of sounds like a London Overground Class 378
I actually like the deep motors of the first one , reminds me of the mark 3s down in the uk. Alot of modern traction systems are made purposely to sound shit because the makers don't actually focus on that ...sadly. esspecially alstom, they give you a hint of the original 90s programming, but then change into something different.
forgot to also mention they sound almost identical to that of the 1996 stock on the Jubilee line.
They are actually made to sound as unnoticeable as possible, as seen in the shift from GTO based VVVF to IGBT based VVVF
Or you can try to make GTO sound pleasant and fun like in the Keikyu 2100 series, but that is hard
@皇家海星 HMS Neptune yeah that's the annoying part, why make them that quiet when they sound so good. I'm not saying to deliberately make them annoying to passenger, but at least as a creative element keep them programmed to sound nice!!, idk why the owners or programmers don't consider that. long as they don't breach sound specifications then why not let it be? Idk too much perfectionism . I'm sure alot of passengers, who arent rail fans, actually appreciate it, not so much that they care, but that it sounds nice when they hear it. Their too good not to like!
That being said, alot of modern trains still have audiable traction. So clearly their allowed to sound like that even till this day. Again not as budren but to keep the sound within a "golden" range or threshold for audiablity.
This sort of mirrors the same reason people like cars that make sound , it's a human thing or quirk. Why not let it remain on the trains without burden . I do think it's possible to request that as a rail operating company , but likely doesent get thought about (again evidenced by the fact that some units are programmed to deliberately sound organised and nice to the ears) Uk trains are undergoing a really boring modern phase if you ask me. Aventra stock train sounds awful, they make literally no noise , our desiro city fleet make noise but is so under the radar, its boring. Only a select few desiro cities are interesting e.g. our class 707s. Our stadler flirts are among the only modern fleet that make nice motor sounds. And the 331s and lastly the class 385s. Other than that , our older uk fleet are so lovely to listen to. Our electrostars are also a really nice train to listen to!
it's just that these don't growl enough. The BR ones (especially the 319s) have a very deep growl at low speeds.
@William Huang true true I agree. Some can but its uncommon. The best you can get from motors that start of deepish. Are possibly uks class 745s their motors are smooth but take long to get to a high pitch sound.
Cross over to platform A for train service towards Bukit Panjang
The C751A sounds very similar to London Underground's 1996 stock on the Jubilee Line! And Londoners go crazy for that sound lol
And the C651 sounds similar to the R160B Siemens of NYCT.
@@nah_144 C651 also sounds similar to Copenhagen's S-Tog's 4th gen stock, as well as Taipei Metro's C321 & Keikyu railway's earlier batch of 1000 series stock to a lesser extent
E o Frota F também
@@nah_144e também igual ao série 3000 da cptm
For the Alstom Metropolis C751A, u shld try standing in the 2nd or 5th car, I assure u that u will hear the OG sound. Trust me.
for the Alstom Metropolis C751A there are only 3 cars
@@thomaschua6931 If you are talking about 3 cars its the Circle Line. The North East Line has 6 just to jog ur memory
@@thomaschua6931your wrong there is 6 cars
The Fuji IGBT used in some of these trains are actually very rare in Japan, since it's only used in one specific train type. That being said, it's cool to see that they're fairly common in Singapore.
They sound similar to a lot of other IGBTs in Japan, so I was surprised to find out it's made by Fuji after riding on one of those a few years ago.
The other motors mentioned here are all very nice. As a Japanese, the motors not from Japan all sound very interesting. I lived near Dhoby Ghaut, so I often heard the Alstom motors on the C751A, and I absolutely loved them. They sound a bit like GTO motors.
The C151's chopper motors were also very cool to hear, since you can't hear these anymore in Tokyo.
Also I love how a lot of people here don't like the new PMSM motors, it's a similar situation here in Japan. The newer motors, with the exception of some, are all very quiet and boring. They can be very eco friendly and energy saving, but man it's sad that there aren't that many loud, cool sounding ones being manufactured any more.
My favourite train model: C151B and C751C
My favourite traction motor: C651, C751A, C751B and C751C
My favourite train design for the line in Singapore: North East Line (the only train line currently that all carriages of the train model have the ‘same’ colour seats)
@@Gaming_-ti2zy My favourite train model: C151, C651, C751B, C951 and CT251
Mt favourite traction motor: C151, C651, C751B, C830, C951 and CT251
I agree, C651 tops it
Fun fact: the Alstom metropolis C830 sounds like the Stock 1995 (Northern Line)
I've noticed that too :)
YES THE TIMESTAMPS and my thinks abt it
0:27 C151 PMSM (this basically isnt a motor)
1:55 C830 (too silent lah and no fucntioning lights of identication of the next station)
3:05 C151A/B/C (oh yes this too common but kinda unique for its map display i dont know the brand srry)
4:23 CT251 (Doors Closing sound in the outside is LOUD AF but anyway kinda same with C151A/B/C but louder) 5:49 C830C (basically C830 but even more melodic like more sounds or smth but what makes it better is that the map displays has lights now
7:01 C751C (louder C751A and doesnt have the DRMD on the Refurbished C751A)
8:18 C951/A or C951 (this is futuristic and all, comfy seats and not oily handrails or grips its just that it takes Sooner for it to have a DRMD but motor is the most og
sorry gotta stop here cuz gotta go to school
Actually the sound of C751 is much like the one of Shanghai Metro 10A01 and 02A03, both are alstom family. I'll give them the first place. Anyway thanks for your video, it reminds me of the wonderdul time when I was travelling in Singapore back in 2016!👍
They also sound like the 1996 stock in london as well.
Here in Japan we have an dangerously scary loud train motor which is somehow 4 cars
I have a next idea of ranking motor train part 2 ( starting from 11 place) : 12 place: c151 NSL / EWL
11 place: C151 (PMSM MOTOR) NSL / EWL
10 place: C830 CCL / CEL
9 place: CT251 TEL
8 place: C830C CCL / CEL
7 place: C651 NSL / EWL
6 place: C751A NEL
5 place: C751B NSL / EWL
4 place: C151B NSL / EWL
3 Place: C151C NSL / EWL
2 place: C751C NEL
1 place : C951 DTL
Add this to new video: Ranking the mrt motor sound part 2
All the trains (c151, c651, c751b, c151a) go like 2 km/h before stopping for 5 seconds. This wording is confusing but im sure some of you know what i mean
@RoboCrafterRC Did you know that if the refurbished C651 was put into service, the motors were brand new? So the iconic sound would have been a thing of the past. Fortunately, the refurbished trains never saw service, which is sad because a modernized train has been scrapped. But the good news is that the motor is still the same iconic one.
10:55
The C751B motor looks similar to the C151ABC.
11:14, not sure what you meant here. The C151s were the OG trains in Singapore since 1987, and their unique motor sounds (similar to the Siemens 651 ones) had been ubiquitous to Singaporean ears way before the third-gen C751b trains arrived.
He meant the c151 a,b & c motors, not the original c151 itself
True
For Punggol/Sengkang LRT:
1st Place: C810A (Unknown Motor)
2nd Place: C810 (Unknown Motor)
The KHI c151 PMSM motor sounded the same as the 80s Ganz-Mavag trains in new zealand.
The C715B departing sounded similar to our SP1900 in Hong Kong MTR!
and the arriving sounded like the SP1900 mixed with the C-Train
Does sounded similar to me, lol
I love all those train. Especially the Downtown Line and North East Line
I agree with him, the C651 has the best motor. Sounds similar to my favourite childhood train, the Seimines Nexas in Melbourne.
I grew up with comengs but my favorite sounding train is the xtrapolises which the c751a sounds like, they’re just too good to beat
@@Detrabot I lived on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines and I got a little sick of the xTraps, so I would be excited to go to the former M>Train area and pray for a Nexas. And damn I really liked it and I didn’t know why, but later on in Singapore I figured it was the motor.
@@xaviording615 I can relate, but with the Siemens because I was on craigieburn lines and now Footscray lines.
The c751b has the same motor as the ksf brothers
My favourite is C751A
In NSL And EWL,It’s All Trains Except R151.If CCL,It’s C830C Only.
9:36 Hey! YISHUN! This is where I live!!

the simens c651 u can really tell the difference when the train entering the station and braking
If u guys wanna find some rolling stocks that are similar to C651 , I think u guys can try the M-train in HK. They have both a very similar motor. M-train mostly operates at Island Line(blue)/Kwun Tong Line(green) and Tsuen Wan Line(Red)
I really really like the sound of the 11th place motor/train and also the 3rd place one
the c651 was meant to be refurbished, but those refurbished prototypes were scrapped due to teething problems, high cost and also given the fact that it was pointless to refurbish them when they were already plans to withdraw them from service in the next 5 or so years. So thats why they cancelled the program. Scrapping the refurbished sets were a waste of money though.
They could have converted them into geometry track cars or reused them for emergency drills, but what has happened just happens.
My most top 3 favrouite train motors are:
3. SMRT C151 PMSM
2.SBS Transit C751C

i still find the c751a motor better than the london underground 1996 jubilee line stock
I can literally sleep on a C830 train because the motor sound is peaceful.

Out of all the lines, the one I didn't ride is the Thomson East Coast line
Did you know that the Alstom Metropolis C830C has the exact same traction motor as the Amsterdam Metro Alstom Metropolis M5 M6?
@HitachiYT802 I believe they may have identical traction motors.
um robo i want to comment ur tel ranking on the train, i think you should put it on a higher rank, like 3rd or 4th
becuz i think the motor sound sounds quite soothing
Psychological fun-factor comment
= motors 3, (a,b,c), at example 4000nm, divide into 2x, 2x, 2x (=6x)
= stop, doors closed, +0.5x, brake release,
== +1x, 1x-time-space, +2x, 2x-time-space, +4x, 4x-time-space
== reverse pattern of halving-ratio with (different)time-spacing to cruise
Apply theory (non-rigid, non-linear) to braking to slow-crawl to one-button (apply theory again) smooth door-align
Review all those for same G-force level for all 3x-set acceleration after initial-move-off. Counter check with all motor configurations. Wind noise acceptable. Engine noise acceptable unless high-pitched.Track grinding noise not-acceptable unless deliberate, to maintain track using normal-run to do minor grinding.
Commuters can check G-force to "review" manufacturer
Those quick to complain about mathematics and lucidity (mentality of grammar-nazi.sss) find themselves trying to explain their way out of basic hokkien numbers communication of 3 pays 4 and 4 pays 3 and other concepts shared/demonstrated recently. Leading to arguments on the lattitude and margins od the first few words, and the following consequence of social-circle reduction of the karens... many times a simple "mistake" is the bait for additional inspection and contemplation but not argument. Being quick to criticise is a very nasty habit.
The pmsm sounds like a car
It’s kinda unfair that they’re replacing C651 and C751B earlier than C151 😭😭
Hi, please note that C151A/B/C and C751B are used same motor (MLR109), so not need to compare
In Buenos Aires we have E line old trains, sound like this: 0:47 (caf gee)

8th c751c
7th c151
6th c830c
5th c951
4th c751b
3rd c751a
2nd c651

I remember taking the C651 from City Hall to Aljunied and that journey was kinda loud but the best. :)
For JRL:
1st Place: CJ151 (Unknown Motor + Only 1 Train)
Also when you said "its a shame it doesnt have the london underground version" but yes there is not london underground version but there is a train called the C465 (C stands for class) which is kinda like the british edition of the C751A and maybe the C751A is the tesla edition of the C465 instead the C465 is an DMU and the C751A is an EMU
The Class 465 Ain’t A DMU It’s An EMU
Wdym by the London Underground version of the C751A?? Just curious bcus you might mean the tube train in the Jubilee line in Ldn Undergound that sounds like the C751A
Honestly if companies start to eliminate traction sound..will be the end . They sound way too cool

So sad that old trains is going to retired RIP C151 😞
The C651 is the best one in this video, in my own opinion. Sadly, it is going to be scrapped soon. On the other hand, my opinion would say that the train at timestamp 7:00 (the C751C), is in 2nd place.
C651: THE ULTIMATE!
