    this album is my favorite genesis. love all the songs, and tony's keyboards are at once beautiful and haunting; innovative and restrained

      So much agreed.
      He made an amazing use of the Cp70 with the prophet and the Synclavier, or the first Emulator.

    What a fantastic job once again!
    I had an interest in music & synths since the late 70s, but when my Dad came home with this album one day and I played this two part track, my interest skyrocketed in wanting to play in synths, and to play in bands.
    I've tried to get my bands to play this for years. Still yet to happen. A few of the musicians agreed to it over the years, but we never got to 1st base as to actually run through it. The original singer from my current band also wanted to do it. Maybe some day.
    It's really helpful to hear all the work you did on it, with all the right sounds. I've pretty much learned and figured out Second Home by the sea, but never really completely learned part one.
    in the event I ever do get to play this in a band, I'd love to hear exactly what keyboards in the video you mapped which synths to. Are you running the Arturia Emulator also for some of those string sounds?
    I also find it amazing how close this sounds, all done with soft synths, using some of the cheapest MIDI controllers. I've said for years expensive MIDI keybeds are not required for a lot of synth & organ music. It's the sounds, and just knowing how to play. It's not required to have the absolutely best keybed action on the market to be able to play some of the very best music, as you've proved. I'm amazed you've used some of the very cheapest stuff out, like the M-Audio KeyStations. Yet, got the job done. You didn't require a Moog or Dave Smith instrument or something to do it.
    Back in the 80s to sound this good, you needed in the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of keyboard gear to sound like that, a road crew, and probably techs to repair it as those old keyboards were not reliable. Now a laptop, some software and very affordable MIDI controllers can get the same job done. The only thing missing is the cool eye candy of the original keyboards.

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That was a really strong comment, thank you !
      So first, I really loved the story with your dad ! And I really hope that one day you will be able to play this masterpiece with your band.
      Of course it would be a huge pleasure to help you and share with you my work on these songs !
      For the mapping it’s really easy : 100% as tony.
      Cp70 with emulator on top at my right, Dx7 with Synclavier on top in front of me,
      And prophet 10 + Quadra on the left side. I just mapped the upper keyboard of the « prophet » to be the Quadra and the lower is the real prophet.
      I don’t really use the arturia emulator vst. I did for some songs but it’s rare.
      Strings/organ sounds are 100% homemade with the prophet !
      Again you are so right, my whole keyboard rig is about 700$ worth which is not even the price of any of tony’s synth (wavestation korg maybe lol).
      As you said , a real synclavier is just almost impossible to use as much I’m using my keyboards because of the ridiculous reliability.
      You are also right, for people who watch my videos, the original keyboards are way more nice to see that’s for sure!
      But it won’t matter anymore once we’ll be on the We can’t dance tour since tony stopped using legendary keyboards and started using 100% midi patches. (Excepted for the specifics we can’t dance songs like no son of mine or fading lights which are massive use of the wavestation and Kronos)
      I also own a very nice Hohner d1000 organ for the early genesis stuff that is used as midi controller, but it looks like a Hammond, so it’s a pleasure for the eyes, and it allows me to have a real b3 sound with a 50$ organ :D you can see this organ used for supper’s ready full band cover on my channel !
      And about the pro soloist.. there is a little surprise coming soon ! I will probably make a video about it later ;)
      Again thanks for your comment and I’m really open to help you the best I can !

      It's been so long since I played this song for the last time, i'm gonna have a look at my project file and answer you then!

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks ! :)
      Here are the presets used on the Synclavier :
      -The 2nd hbts lead is a preset called synth lead (from the timbre 4 of the Synclavier if I remember well),
      -The very first sound you ear is also a preset
      -The vibe (kind of bell) sound is also a preset
      -the kind of brass is also a preset
      -And the voice at the middle and the end of the first half of the song is also a preset
      Note that each presets are always reworked, with a bit of chorus or eq most of the time.
      All other sounds are homemade :)

      @@MathGsr I remember one of them is called "Complex RTE FX" or something like that, I had the free trial version of Synclavier V for a while and sampled it onto a Roland keyboard haha. I'd be very curious to see if someone could recreate the Synclavier lead from Second Home with a DX7.
