Or those of us who have put 1,500 hours into Splatoon 2, it was a day 1 preorder... So excited for this one. This is like Borderlands 2 release level for me.
I think one of the best parts for me is that this is just the game at launch. The game to me already looks phenomenal but on top of that there will be 2 years of updates and even DLC for this game as they confirmed. Splatoon 2 had a bit of an evolution during it's own update cycle which lasted one year (Until they decided that just wasn't enough) So the fact that it's successor that's already so much better might have the privilege of having even more content being built on top of what it already has makes me excited for the future of the game.
It's a little concerning because the same internal division at Nintendo develops both Splatoon and Animal Crossing. Though most employees weren't shared between ACNH and Splatoon 2, it's still a risk factor
@@x46vob I don’t think it will be, Nogamis team treated Splatoon 2 differently from animal crossing, rather than ending it prematurely they basically tried supporting the game as long as they feasibly could, they extended weapon updates until roughly April, they gave us bonus splatfests even after the final splatfest, and they kept patching the game until last year, after Splatoon 3 was announced and around when it’s story mode trailer came out, I don’t see it as a risk because Nintendo (And Nogami’s team) is not neglectful of Splatoon.
Game seems like a fantastic refinement, the one thing I wish they did though was change the sky boxes in the Salmon run maps. I'm honestly sick of the bleak twilight look of all those maps. Was hoping for more visual variety there.
Quite a peculiar yet valid thing to ask for. I completely agree, the skybox is getting pretty darn old at this point, I'd be able to live without an improvement to it in some way, but with a game as colorful as this it does kinda feel out of place.
Some variety would be nice but I found the strange liminal look of the maps appealing, it good to see that come back but they’re most likely to change things up later on with this one.
10:47 That's worth the review for me. I loved, loved, *loved* Splatoon, so I rushed to get the Splatoon Switch from Walmart here in the States. But I never got hooked on it like I did the first game for whatever reason. So I'm actually a person who likes Splatoon a lot but didn't play the sequel quite as much. I think between the refinements and the bolstered single-player (because being a hindrance to my team makes me anxious), it might be worth the $60 again.
For me I mostly quite playing Splatoon 2 after Nintendo Online. I like the core concept of Splatoon, but I generally dislike competitive games(which sounds insane to play a primarily competitive focused game). So when I did play Splatoon 2 it was primarily either single player content(Story Mode & Octo Expansion) or Salmon Run. Salmon run was honestly my favorite part of not just 2, but the series as a whole. So, hearing that Salmon Run is now ALWAYS accessible (except during Splatfests presumably) & looks like it may have exclusive content(5:09 Unlockable Suits?) I'm really tempted to get this game, especially with all of it's quality of life improvements. However, I'm still hesitant cause it's $60 for just the single-player & at least $4 more dollars for me to unlock the full game for merely a month. I've already done the free trial(Halloween Splatfest) & paid for the online to experience the Final Splatfest(Team Chaos BTW). IDK I'm still reluctant to get Nintendo Online because I still vividly remember when online was free. I guess paid online feels a bit more justified for Splatoon 3... If I do buy Splatoon 3 it will wind up being an $80 purchase...plus at least $20 every year & maybe another $30 for the DLC...
Was thinking about what they could have added as a Salmon Run-esque mechanic for this one-could be cool for them to add a streetwear designer/influencer mechanic where you could collab with different brands and compete in their gear (with random/dull stats) to build hype around specific items, netting you extra cash AND chunks to design your OWN pieces with stats you get to choose. Maybe you could even recruit recent players as influencers for your own brand to build hype and strengthen stats even more. Could turn the annoying grind for perfect gear into something more mission-based and social!
You can choose/move the abilities you want to other pieces of equipment once unlocked though. So, even though you can grind all equipment to unlock everything, it isn't really needed. . Personally, I'd like to have seen some clan stuff. Where clans could battle it out against eachother, maybe with a custom designed shirt or something for each clan.
I get that people look at Splatoon, see snapbacks, and hipster squids and immediately think Western Instagram culture... but like... Splatoon is EXTREMELY Japanese. Calamari Inktantation is an old Japanese style fishing song. They have classically Japanese imagery and iconography adorning their buildings... Idols are a very distinctly Japanese concept (thus why they are almost always female...). Even the festivals. Also sea life has a very strong cultural importance in Japan. The "fashion culture" we see in game is based around Shibuya/Harajuku street culture. It's all lifestyle based. Streetwear in Western sensibilities is built around a hype machine with "limited drops" and "capsules" while brands like Goro Takahashi are distinctly different in that you have to show up early to get into the shop, they rarely let anyone in anyways, and they won't even sell to you if they can't find a piece they think fits you. Japanese fashion culture is very different. While they share some "styles" in their clothing and designs... the culture is very, very different. There aren't as many "hypebeasts" in Japan. Stuff like Bape (which yes was created by two Japanese guys) isn't NEARLY as popular there as it is in the Western hemisphere. Where here every streetwear enthusiast is wearing a hoodie/flannel/vintage tees, jeans, sneakers, and a cap of some sort... Japan's streetwear culture resembles something more rooted in subculture, and self expression. Also their silhouettes are VERY different. They opt for more traditionally Japanese silhouettes in their clothing. So it kind of weirds me out how Western Splatoon players take so much of it differently. There is a reason that Splatoon is MASSIVELY more popular in Japan than it is here. It just looks vapid to Westerners so the gameplay takes front and center. If they made a new mode I would think it would be something more inspired by idol culture if anything.. idk.
@@robotoboy30 Totally, and I didn't intend to cheapen the many clear ties to real-life Japanese culture-fashion or otherwise-that make the world of Splatoon feel so rich and layered, was mostly just thinking of ways to alleviate the grindy meta with something that ties closely to an existing mechanic that already works on a rotating schedule, even/especially if it does maybe too closely resemble the hype-vs-expression paradox of modern fashion. Really appreciate the point of view! The idol thing is interesting, although I'm admittedly VERY out of touch with that aspect of Japanese culture-I guess I always assumed the "hosts" of each game assume those roles, but it'd be dope to have something in the game that introduces idol culture in an engaging way to those unfamiliar!
I think the reason why Splatoon 3 doesn’t have a big “hook” yet, is because instead of scrapping out ranked modes and making new ones, or scrapping salmon run and making a new horde mode, they refined the game. Could the game be as polished and refined as it is if the devs had spent most of their time making brand new hooks? Unless they spent another year developing the game, I don’t think so. So sure, there’s no big ‘hook’ yet, but I doubt the game could be as polished and refined as it is if the devs had mostly focused on big hooks. Also remember that we’re getting updates and dlc! The dlc, plus additional ranked modes through updates (like clam blitz in S2), along with million of tiny additions through updates will eventually give the game a “hook”, in my opinion.
Yea I definitely agree but I also understand that the dev had to work through covid to get the game finished within a decent time frame. I hate covid:(
@@Zyckro yea I think what also could hook players is the fact that it's a new game most people are kind of starting at the same level and I know a lot of my friends think splatoon 2 can be difficult to jump into because the game has been out for years now.
I spend the entire Saturday playing the Splatfest demo. Really can't wait for Friday, will pick up the game as soon as our nearby stores open. No Splatoon 3 & Knuckles joke tho? I'm a little sad.
I pre-installed this last night. Can’t wait to play it. My wife liked Splatoon 2 so much that I had to get her a separate Switch when it came out so I could use my own 😂
I maybe played 50 hours of Splatoon 2, and abandoned it because the only mode I loved was Salmon run, and it felt terrible never being able to play it. 24/7 Salmon run was all I needed!
I bought Splatoon 2 to play with my young kids, and was disappointed to see that we were mostly playing on opposing teams whenever we partied up. I'm very happy to hear that we'll be able to play on the same team, now! Will we be able to party up and do Salmon Run or the other story content together as well?
8:11 See this is my problem. I'm a person that has dumped literally 1500 hours between Splat 1 and 2. I've played these modes countless times, I've ranked them up twice before. So it's surprising and lame to me that there isn't a single new main mode here. I've done this stuff before time and time again. I don't think it was a hard to ask to expect at least one new mode, yet here we are. It's honestly hard for me to get excited to be like "alright, time to rank up rain maker a third time, woooh, but this time there are changed special weapons." It just doesn't cut it for me. Where the Salmon Run equivalent? As similar as the content in 2 was to 1, it added a big new selling point in the form of that, and it released only 2 years after 1. This game makes 5 years between releases, and yet there's barely anything new to do beyond single player and once again mastering a new set of specials. Cosmetic stuff/ quality of life updates and small details are cool, but a bunch of tiny improvements don't really make new enthralling content for me. I've seen this stuff before and for hours on end. If you're new to the games, this will be the best one hands down. But if you're looking for more like me I really don't see it, at least not on launch.
Controls feel better (not sure why)and the new movement options are nice. Small but very important changes in ranked as well (extra checkpoints). But yes, it's splatoon2. Nothing more. I will probably sink another 2K hours because I missed 2 (stopped playing at 2019, 2k hours in).
@@jousis_ Yeah, that's understandable. I've played the demo, the mechanics feel as refined as ever, but me personally yeah I need more than that. But you'll likely enjoy it, so that's cool.
I'm at 1.4k hours despite there not being a new mode there are always new ways to play splatoon if you play primarily shooters try and get good with a charger because the experience will be that much different
I understand but it's not to say they won't add one. They could surprise us and add a new mode with an update we never know. I'd like to see a new mode too
@@forgottenpaperflowers exactly i mean clam blitz wasnt on splatoon 2 on release and we already know that league battles are going to have multiple new modes
I would go a step further in saying Splatoon 3 is the pinnacle of shooters in general. It takes a stale genre and makes it EXCITING again, and that is a very hard thing to do these days!
@@emilytheimp I have not, but it looks like a standard 90's shooter with lots of blood. I mean, I will give it a shot for sure, but I doubt it will take the crown from Splatoon for me. What fresh take on the genre does it provide?
@@clyptonimusprime It takes influences from Character Action Games where you have a hundred ways to stylishly kill your opponents, by chaining your weapons together in different ways. It starts unassumingly, but every weapon has a unique twist that allows for interesting tech options and fun interactions between the weapons. The revolver for example lets you throw coins into the air which you can the shoot in the air for a ricocheting shot into an enemies weakpoint. Or you shoot the coin with another weapon for either even bigger massive damage or the potential for a homing aoe nuke. Or you shoot the coin into an enemies face and let them shoot it only to get their shots right back in their face. Or you punch the coin into your enemies face. Or or or... All why building up that style meter. Combine that with a fun, fluid and fastpaced movement system and a surprisingly engaging story about the depths of hell(More than doom could ever tell). Its the most frantic fun Ive ever had in a singleplayer shooter. No game before has given me such an adrenalin rush from just playing it.
@@emilytheimp Well you certainly convinced me to give this a try now, that’s for sure. Sounds very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I will absolutely check this game out. Cheers! 🍻
I picked up splatoon 2 last year and it honestly felt kind of “ dead” , yes, I could always find a lobby but everyone was level 100 plus and I was playing against the same players over and over again sometimes , also I missed all the splatfests and special events, I did enjoyed the Octo Expansion so I’m picking up this today thanks to the review!!!
I am a big splatoon fan. It's by far my most played game on switch, by about 300 hours difference. Splatoon 3, seems, in my eyes, is a big improvement over 2. I'm gonna go over every thing and give my own little comment review: Special Design: The specials seem WAY better designed than 2. In 2, all the specials had pretty much super long range and are either extremely good, or extremely bad, no real middle ground. The special meta is pretty much garbage in 2. In 3, the special design is BY FAR the best we've seen. 1 was op in a fun way, but annoying to fight. 2 was annoying and focused to much on special spam. 3 solves both those problems by making the specials balanced, so no real best one (except tacticooler, but that will be nerfed), fun to use, and not annoying to fight. This is a massive step up in the series and my only real complaint is missiles are back, but very few weapons have them. OVERALL SCORE: 10/10 Modes, Ranked System and New Movement Ok, my first real gripe here is that we still only have 4 ranked modes, one casual mode, and they are still on rotation. While I understand rotation still being a thing, a new ranked or casual mode would be nice. However, the new anarchy battle system is great. You can now play ranked with friends, and one is super casual. Then you can try and rank up in the more competitive option. It's perfect. Only real issue is no league or X on launch. The movement options are great too. Surge is an amazing mix-up option and while I didn't use roll much, I can see people learning it in the near-future and it will be insane. Very cool Nintendo. OVERALL SCORE: 8/10 Salmon Run: It just seems even better. Open 24/7, Big Run, new bosses, King salmonids, egg throwing. It just makes it so much better. Not much really else to say. OVERALL SCORE: 9/10 Story Mode: Haven't played it yet but from what I've seen and heard, it's the best non-dlc story mode BY FAR. The only real competitor looks like Octo Expansion. I'll have to play it for myself though OVERALL SCORE: ???/1O Other Stuff: Tableturf seems cool. Big Man. The shopkeeper designs are some of the best in the series. The music slaps. The QoL features are great. Splatsville looks awesome. Recon looks better than ever. Big Man. Playing with friends. New weapons. Big Man. OVERALL SCORE: 10/10 FINAL SCORE: 9.5/10
It looks great! I was just hoping to be about to play with 2 players whilst online. I’d love local multiplayer but I know that kind of defeats the point 😂
It almost solved every thing. The one thing I want is to be able to select 3-4 load outs and change them between splats. In case I get matched with or against a team where I wish I had something else. THAT would be a large upgrade from splatoon 2. You know, or maybe just let me play as Judd.
I'm not sure how many custom sets will be ingame ...but it seems you can save up to 5 sets on most splatoon amiibo each ... so 3 splatoon amiibo, is 15 custom sets extra.
I personally feel Splatoon 3 didn't really *need* something huge, it just needed to refine and rework the existing ideas in significant ways. And they did exactly that - there's nothing big and new, but every single existing idea has been improved on significantly to the point where it *all* feels new.
While I think the SP missions are fun I kind of wanted them to be a classic FPS style story. Like you stumble upon a big evil corporation dumping toxic sludge in the ocean, and you battle it out while simultaneously cleaning up the sludge while shooting water instead of ink
Yea but splatoon is meant to be unique I don’t think anyone would want a cod like story mode in splatoon of all games I think it’s nice how the story mode is like a Mario game
They need to have an option where you can pick what mode to play like rainmaker splat zone etc and I'm not talking about in private mode kind of what Mario kart does with their battle modes where you can select what battle mode to play
I agree. They should also allow us to play ranked during splatfest. It’s not good to limit players from playing what they want. Plus, we all got our own busy lives and we shouldn’t have to wait to play a certain mode at a certain time.
I was very late to splatoon 2 and I did enjoy but so many little things made me stop playing, I wasn’t really expecting much from 3 but honestly this looks like so a polished game, very excited for it.
I really wish they had at least added a new ranked mode. Clamp Blitz in Splatoon 2 was such a creative and fun addition (and came with such fantastic music as well), they should have come up with an equally cool mode for Splatoon 3. Maybe they will add something in a free DLC, but if so, it makes you wonder why it's not included at launch.
@@barnste Yup, however Splatoon 2 launched with Salmon Run. Clamp Blitz was a very welcome bonus that came later on. Splatoon 3 on the other hand has nothing original to show at launch, which is a disappointment for sure.
@@Failentin Well, Salmon run on normal ranked/turf matches every now and then, a brand new card game, a hero mode that’s actually good without being dlc… Yes, I wont lie that I didn’t want a new ranked mode at launch, but if the devs had focused on a new ranked mode at launch, could the game be as insanely refined as it is? It would definitely still be a million times better than S2, but not quite so refined in my opinion.
@@acinggames8422 it might yeah. But some ppl that have played shooters all their life can get the same results with stick controls with high sensitivity
@@daniellizarraga1453 high sensitivity stick controls has no aim assist in the slightest with minimal speed up to the stick. You will be horrendous and lose massively to people who can move fast and slow in a smoother manner with motion
Like Alex said, the single player can help a ton! And this time, its really good! :) Also, you can play ranked modes now without worrying about losing your rank :)
Gameplay wise splatoon is one of my favorite games to play. I spent a lot of hours playing splatoon 2. However, I do think they need to incorporate more new concepts in splatoon 3. Like bringing a new mode to play.
Pmttyk 💯! But this went on sale making it cost the same as if we used the voucher thing for another 10 days IDK if it's better to get this or monster hunter rise 20$ this is 40$I'm like IDK I didn't like the single player mode and lack of control options but IDK I never got to try it while it was still alive with 2 it was dead when i got it for 40 on sale regret it even with the dlc which is the only thing I can play for no reason couldn't figure out how to get into games without menus so idk I'm torn.
The test-fire was disconnecting and dropping matches - Does the full game allow Re-Connects? The new party lobby is incredible, but the constant D/C's and inability to Re-Connect will be a deal-breaker
I'm not a player, but my son plays this. I do hear the music and sometimes i watch as well. The music, at least some of them are very good in my opinion.
I look at this as the game Splatoon 2 SHOULD have been. And for the record I'm not saying 2 is bad. Far from it. But I couldn't sit with it for too long due to its little issues that have all been fixed in 3. So it might not be a huge game changer in general especially for those that have lived on the previous games but as an entry point to the series or even someone that may have been put off by the collection of strange issues; this is without a doubt the best one to get into. I think it goes without saying that a 4th entry would be on stronger hardware as well as a bigger opportunity to shake up the formula but until then, splatty 3 has definitely perfected it's formula and for that I feel is definitely enough to upgrade to it (furthermore you can always swap in Splatoon 2 for 3 to save a good couple of quid like I will)
Loved this review, I agree 100% on everything you said. I also really wish it had one big new idea/ ranked battle (like salmon run for 2)but who knows maybe they’ll add it later.
Please help! Everytime I go to do an Anarchy Battle - it automatically places me in Rainmaker mode. How do I change the mode to Clam Blitz , Splat Zone and Tower Control? I feel like I've looked everywhere and can't find it ... Going on 3 days now lol. Please help !!!!
I'm hoping they add a new control scheme called flick stick as an option. With how you can't look up or down with gyro aiming turned on, flick stick would be the next evolution of it. Cause otherwise, I really hate how you can't look up or down with gyro aiming turned on. At least that's what I'm assuming considering 2 was like that
Question, now that the inklings don’t show their gender how do clothing work in the game now? Like for example the school uniform from the inkling girl’s amiibo, does the game give you the option to choose which outfit you want for your character?
The formula for Splatoon works and there's no reason to change it. A "big idea" is risky for a formula that isn't broken. Maybe developers did have new ideas but ultimately said no because the formula would have changed. And then fans would be upset. So maybe Splatoon 4 will add on something "big" but if they don't, its okay. Just keep perfecting the mechanics and add more customization to wardrobes and fans will be happy.
The formula is great and should remain the same for the foreseeable future. However, the lack of meaningful new modes is not something that should be applauded imo. Am I unreasonable for wanting at least one new main mode here? I really don't think so. After 1500 hours between both games and ranking up ranked modes twice, I want something more. This is a game I'm likely not getting until a few months have passed and they've released more new stuff. So is Splatoon 4 follows this pattern of not having any new modes (which I doubt it will) I'll have a serious problem. I want new content from sequels, not just slightly tweeked mechanics.
The formula works, nobody can deny that, but what's the point of releasing two Splatoon games on the same console? That makes it so that one has to be better or, at least, different enough from the other to distinguish them, but if they're practically the same, what was the point? Splatoon is a series that should be one game per console (a la Smash Bros)
@@tempest2789 but splatoon 3 is noticeably better even just from the splatfest? and anyway, now that 3 has given us an estimated minimum period of time before the switch gets replaced, imo we would've had to wait way too long if it was on the next gen console instead
@@jackiecozzie4803 Better in what sense? Nothing I've seen has striken me as "This is a sequel", but rather "This is just more Splatoon". Why not just wait for the next console and update Splatoon 2 with weapons, balances and more? As I said, the issues isn't the existance of Splatoon 3, it's the fact that it's on the same console as Splatoon 2 and doesn't do anything different enough to stand out. Not even new modes, which you would expect from a sequel. And I'll ignore your point of Splatoon 3 giving us an estimate of the Switch's lifespan because it's irrelevant to the point
For the holidays I was searching for a new game for the switch and out of all the options this video really brought me over to splatoon I'm looking foward to play it, really good video!
Awesome review. I'm struggling trying to decide if I should buy it or not, because I'm afraid if I buy it, I won't play any other game, and I already have so many games to play and finish on my library... I'll probably buy it anyway
Are there controls options like the forced motion controls which don't feel right i never was able to get into games in the 2nd cuz of it constantly needing be camera fix and then getting a drift that would make it just spin on brand new joy con i tried the demo or beta and it lacked this option
Tried 1 and 2 for a long time! But sadly I can’t get used to motion control 😢 tried everything! Every tip and trick.. but it keeps feeling like going against your nature.. really sucks
I’m so torn. I did pre order splatoon 3, but I’m thinking of cancelling that pre order. I’ve never liked multiplayer shooters like COD because online multiplayer tends to frustrate me. Is splatoon 3 still worth the $60 for someone like me or should I just listen to the fact that I traditionally don’t like shooters? I still kinda want to give splatoon a chance though. Idk.
are you slightly interested in salmon run? playing cooperatively to kill hordes. if so, keep your pre-order. there will be dlc eventually that will likely put the story mode to shame like with splatoon 2.
I hate online multiplayer shooters. I don't play any or them. Usually play single player games, RPGs, story focused games, etc. But... Splatoon 2 is actually my most played game of all time across any platform I own. (Maybe except the Sims.) I don't know what it is, but I love it. It can get frustrating, you can feel some pressure, especially when you're new, but you're gonna keep coming back for more. (Or just return it within the first few days if you don't like it, if you buy it from a store.)
Depends if you want to play online, if yes then don't get it. It sounds like Splatoon 2 does a better job with online which is essential for a game like this. They made some questionable decisions too.
Yeah but I have been trying to find online games every lobbies empty in 2 now so more since this released IDK if I should get into it cuz I couldn't get into the 2nd game maybe I should try it again I got the dlc cuz there was literally nothing else to do but stand in the lobby and then it was like no match making at all so if u didn't know anyone all I got were no rooms exist or create a room and invite neither would do anything else but disconnected
Really enjoyed this review and just glad that you didn't throw in any huge spoilers like some people have been doing that I've been trying as much as I can to avoid. Can't wait for Friday wish I could get it right away from Gamestop but I got work from 7am to 6pm so I can't get the game until after work :((
Are you saying because it's so similar to splatoon 2? I love S2, but I feel the same way. After all this time, I was so excited, but now feel really blah and disappointed with Splatoon 3. It looks like they fixed a lot, but it's not an exciting new game. It's a refined splatoon 2. I'll still buy it because I love splatoon, but it's a let down.
@@ES-wn4oq yeah, I would agree with you. I think it is because I played both games beforehand (1st I owned, the second I borrowed from a friend. It is too similar for me, splatoon 3 should have been splatoon 2. Especially when they had five years
Can we pick our own ink color yet?? And before ya argue it would slow matchmaking because it couldn't match you against people of the same color, remember that there's no reason we can't see different colors on our own screens. Like you'd think given what this game is, that picking your ink color would have been an accessibility option in Splatoon 1, yet here we are at 3...
If I recall correctly, spla2n already had a color lock option for color blind players. I've personally never used it since I'm not colorblind and I like the variety. It would be nice to be able to choose colors yourself, but the accessibility option is there already.
It just sounds like you're trying to find random stuff to complain about. Why would you even want to play the game and only stare at one color? It just seems boring.
@@futurehistoryarchaeologist4480 WHAA? I wonder if it was added after launch or if I just missed it the time I was playing... Is it limited to certain colors? Well actually I suppose it doesn't matter now that 3 is upon us, but hopefully it's there!
@@ShurikanBlade I mean, I realize it's super subjective, but it isn't random; it's the one complaint I've had about the series since the first released for Wii U. As for my opinion why I want to stay one color, I mean, it feels pretty basic to me, why change any of your outfit? To make a style you like personally, the same reason you like anything. I like green, and want my hair and ink to be green, don't think that's a bad thing, or hard to implement. I also play lot's of board games, my wife and I have well over 200 of them. Players are often color coded, and I'm always green (to the point that if I'm not green I occasional grab other players green pieces on the board, habits, man). Color is SO prominent in this game, so let players pick.
@@Lexgamer im pretty sure color lock was in splatoon 1 too, still sucks that you have to wait for the right color combo to appear in multiplayer rather than just selecting the one you want
I know this is all exiting but after leaving the Nintendo scene and playing other games I realised that if any other game producer did what Nintendo did with splatoon 3 there would be uproar at a company basically just releasing an update for $60. If you think about this splatoon 3 is basically just an updated splatoon 2. It's splatoon 2 with a few more weapons, a new campaign and some fixes and changes to features. Still looks great though
Its crazy how I've been googling throughout the day to see if other people have this opinion and your post is the first one I've seen. I just can't justify the full game price for this - if this was say Call of Duty, new maps and updated graphics is par the course for your money. And the idea that they needed to release a new game for persistent game modes like Salmon Run is ridiculous - its a serverside thing ... just offer that game mode all the time. It blows my mind how many people seem to be so hyped for this when it should have been, at best, a $15 or $20 DLC for some of the new content (like singleplayer campaign) and everything else (new maps, graphics, persistent and new game modes) should have been free updates. Anyways I'm just ranting but from a gamer perspective this is just ... sad. Like people complain that Nintendo rarely has a sale for first party games and they are always super expensive and then the company offers this as a new game and everyone is just foaming at the mouth to buy it ... Idk man.
Yeah it’s better than Splatoon 2, but I definitely wouldn’t say it warrants a whole new game on the same console. I think most people are ignoring the fact that the new specials and stages could’ve easily been added in updates to 2. They really didn’t do much with the “chaos” theme, and while the refinements are cool, them alone shouldn’t be the selling point for a game on the same console, they should be something on top of the main selling point. They also didn’t add any new modes besides the tri-color turf wars which are reserved for Splatfests (I don’t count Tableturf cause that’s just a completely different game). Story mode looks better, but without meaningful changes to the online, it’s not going to carry the game. People keep saying that it’s obviously going to be similar cause it’s Splatoon, but I’m sure a team of highly experienced game devs could think of something to add, and if they couldn’t, they could have just kept updating 2 and held off 3 until the next console. It’s still obviously a really good game since it’s just an improved 2, and I get why people are excited for the new content, but I think they should’ve done a lot more.
Having absolutely no experience with the Splatoon series before watching this video, I still have no idea what is supposed to be going on other than it's better than the first two games.
Lockers might be pointless, but TBH, people asked for a version of them (deppartaments), lockers are just a happy medium point where we have a place to customize without being too much of a waste
Yeah, I love splatoon as a series, but even I can't deny that the promise of chaos in the final splatfest lead to an expectation of not having the same fairly ordered system we had before. Chaos would be more than renaming ranked to anarchy, and actually having a public random mode selection with occassional dedicated squid party/hide and seek nonsense or the stages sometimes load in covered in the 8-balls from octo expansion which just get in the way for 3 minutes of turfing. Like none of these would be difficult or complicated additions, and would make a notable break in what is now the normality of splatoon 2
I am sooooo excited for Splat 3! After playing in the Splatfest I genuinely could not go back to Splat 2 at all. It was nowhere near as fun and I just couldn't get back into it, rip.
I went out this morning to Walmart to see if I could grab splatoon 3 a few hours early but they didn’t have any out….so I bought a switch oled and bought it digitally lol
Or those of us who have put 1,500 hours into Splatoon 2, it was a day 1 preorder... So excited for this one. This is like Borderlands 2 release level for me.

Luckily more than half of half the content at launch will be straight from splatoon 2 so you'll be able to keep racking them hours up
I think one of the best parts for me is that this is just the game at launch.
Yeah I can agree.
As long as they don't pull an animal crossing new horizons and stop after one year. (Horizons was supposed to be 2 years as well)
@@imnottsuki7978 we got a huge DLC almost 2 years after it came out. But youre right. They didnt support it nearly as much as they said they would.
It's a little concerning because the same internal division at Nintendo develops both Splatoon and Animal Crossing. Though most employees weren't shared between ACNH and Splatoon 2, it's still a risk factor
Splatoon is one of Nintendo biggest online games so they will deffo update it for years to come
@@x46vob I don’t think it will be, Nogamis team treated Splatoon 2 differently from animal crossing, rather than ending it prematurely they basically tried supporting the game as long as they feasibly could, they extended weapon updates until roughly April, they gave us bonus splatfests even after the final splatfest, and they kept patching the game until last year, after Splatoon 3 was announced and around when it’s story mode trailer came out, I don’t see it as a risk because Nintendo (And Nogami’s team) is not neglectful of Splatoon.
Skipping the news is worth paying full price alone
When they added an un-skippable Isabelle news section to Animal Crossing: New Horizons I was FUMING
Game seems like a fantastic refinement, the one thing I wish they did though was change the sky boxes in the Salmon run maps. I'm honestly sick of the bleak twilight look of all those maps. Was hoping for more visual variety there.
I agree with this
Quite a peculiar yet valid thing to ask for. I completely agree, the skybox is getting pretty darn old at this point, I'd be able to live without an improvement to it in some way, but with a game as colorful as this it does kinda feel out of place.
at the very least, there are a handful of new ink colors in Salmon Run besides just orange now
Some variety would be nice but I found the strange liminal look of the maps appealing, it good to see that come back but they’re most likely to change things up later on with this one.
How can u even focus on the sky during the mayhem of multiplayer
10:47 That's worth the review for me.
I loved, loved, *loved* Splatoon, so I rushed to get the Splatoon Switch from Walmart here in the States. But I never got hooked on it like I did the first game for whatever reason.
So I'm actually a person who likes Splatoon a lot but didn't play the sequel quite as much.
I think between the refinements and the bolstered single-player (because being a hindrance to my team makes me anxious), it might be worth the $60 again.
Splatoon 2 was well worth $60.
It’s not worth it if you didn’t like the multiplayer in the first or second game it’s exactly the same in the this game.
@@Daehpo The story mode is really good and I've put hours into it already. Personally, I think it's worth it for story mode and salmon run alone.

Could turn the annoying grind for perfect gear into something more mission-based and social!
agreed, the biggest pain point in 2 for me was getting ideal gear abilities- sad they haven't done anything to alleviate that grind in 3
You can choose/move the abilities you want to other pieces of equipment once unlocked though.
Yeah and I think the hook for players should be the simple fact that there are updates coming. That the game will be changing. New stuff is coming!
Exactly, it is the definitive edition of Splatoon, the best way to play.
Yea I definitely agree but I also understand that the dev had to work through covid to get the game finished within a decent time frame. I hate covid:(
@@Zyckro yea I think what also could hook players is the fact that it's a new game most people are kind of starting at the same level and I know a lot of my friends think splatoon 2 can be difficult to jump into because the game has been out for years now.

well that's nice now you can play together
Modern problems require modern solutions.
SAME HERE. Splatoon 2 is our favorite game to play together.
I maybe played 50 hours of Splatoon 2, and abandoned it because the only mode I loved was Salmon run, and it felt terrible never being able to play it. 24/7 Salmon run was all I needed!
Sorry to hear that. The game has so much more to offer, including the phenomenal DLC
@@DeadofWinter321 Agreed. That included the story and DLC 😋
I bought Splatoon 2 to play with my young kids, and was disappointed to see that we were mostly playing on opposing teams whenever we partied up. I'm very happy to hear that we'll be able to play on the same team, now! Will we be able to party up and do Salmon Run or the other story content together as well?
Salmon run, but not the single player story mode

@@emilytheimp I have not, but it looks like a standard 90's shooter with lots of blood. I mean, I will give it a shot for sure, but I doubt it will take the crown from Splatoon for me. What fresh take on the genre does it provide?
No one can deny to you that Splatoon is the most unique and original shooter of all time.

I am a big splatoon fan. It's by far my most played game on switch, by about 300 hours difference. Splatoon 3, seems, in my eyes, is a big improvement over 2. I'm gonna go over every thing and give my own little comment review:
Special Design:
The specials seem WAY better designed than 2.
OVERALL SCORE: 10/10
Modes, Ranked System and New Movement
Ok, my first real gripe here is that we still only have 4 ranked modes, one casual mode, and they are still on rotation.
OVERALL SCORE: 8/10
Salmon Run:
It just seems even better. Open 24/7, Big Run, new bosses, King salmonids, egg throwing. It just makes it so much better. Not much really else to say.
OVERALL SCORE: 9/10
Story Mode:
Haven't played it yet but from what I've seen and heard, it's the best non-dlc story mode BY FAR. The only real competitor looks like Octo Expansion. I'll have to play it for myself though
OVERALL SCORE: ???/1O
Other Stuff:
Tableturf seems cool. Big Man. The shopkeeper designs are some of the best in the series. The music slaps. The QoL features are great. Splatsville looks awesome. Recon looks better than ever. Big Man. Playing with friends. New weapons. Big Man.
OVERALL SCORE: 10/10
FINAL SCORE: 9.5/10
I've seen the cutsences for the story mode and the animation is AMAZING
The specials for me is a huge selling point, it was the worst part of 2 for me and in 3 they are very well refined, campaign looks great too!

The test-fire was disconnecting and dropping matches - Does the full game allow Re-Connects?
The new party lobby is incredible, but the constant D/C's and inability to Re-Connect will be a deal-breaker
the splatoon testfires are always horrible when it comes to online matches, they usually create them to balence the servers.
I think it goes without saying that a 4th entry would be on stronger hardware as well as a bigger opportunity to shake up the formula but until then, splatty 3 has definitely perfected it's formula and for that I feel is definitely enough to upgrade to it (furthermore you can always swap in Splatoon 2 for 3 to save a good couple of quid like I will)
Communication errors are still a problem.
Loved this review, I agree 100% on everything you said. I also really wish it had one big new idea/ ranked battle (like salmon run for 2)but who knows maybe they’ll add it later.

You sound creatively bankrupt.
Bought this for my 6 year old, it's great fun and a welcome calm down from modern warfare for me
Mw is hot dog water
Splatoon 2 is goddamn still on a high price after so many years. This says something about the
quality of this game.
It’s not my cup of tea, but I’m really happy for the Splatoon fans with this game. Hope y’all have an amazing weekend with it! :)
I was gonna hold off on this but the hype caught me so I bought the digital version 👌
Awesome review. I'm struggling trying to decide if I should buy it or not, because I'm afraid if I buy it, I won't play any other game, and I already have so many games to play and finish on my library... I'll probably buy it anyway
make it your multiplayer game, while still having a single player game on the side.
GREAT WIPEOUT AT 9:26 BY THE WAY!!
: (
You forgot to mention TriColor TurWar.. Is that only set for Splatfeet or is it a mod that’s implemented?
Are there controls options like the forced motion controls which don't feel right i never was able to get into games in the 2nd cuz of it constantly needing be camera fix and then getting a drift that would make it just spin on brand new joy con i tried the demo or beta and it lacked this option
What's the tune at the end of the review before Alex's Thoughts? It's cool
I'm glad salmon run is all the time now. I enjoyed it so much in 2 but working the hours I do, made it difficult to do the mode.
I think Tableturf Battle is enough of a major addition. I mean it's a fullfledged Splatoon spin-off included in the game for free! That's crazy!
I'm looking forward to picking this up. Nice review :)
Tried 1 and 2 for a long time! But sadly I can’t get used to motion control 😢 tried everything! Every tip and trick.. but it keeps feeling like going against your nature.. really sucks
Yeah ikr IDK why in other games I need them but this is throwing me off lol
Great review! However, it would have been nice if you could have avoided including that major story spoiler at 2:53 without a spoiler warning.
I’m trying to avoid spoilers of the hero mode since this was a review I’ll give it a break two days
What is hero mode?
@@Ridku13singleplayer story mode
Really enjoyed this review and just glad that you didn't throw in any huge spoilers like some people have been doing that I've been trying as much as I can to avoid. Can't wait for Friday wish I could get it right away from Gamestop but I got work from 7am to 6pm so I can't get the game until after work :((
I’ve watched everything and listened to everything about splatoon 3, and it’s getting really hard to justify a purchase
Especially when they had five years
@@dextheclone9186 well get 3 if you wanna play Splatoon at all, cause of the fanbase entirely moving on
@@acinggames8422 all good with skipping out on that, jus don’t feel like getting splatoon 3
Bullet breaststroke is a phrase I never thought I'd hear 😂
9:21 - 9:37 why is nobody talking about this clip?
As a heavy main I appreciated this. Also, if there is an appropriate time to squidbag this may be it.

Never played Splatoon but I'm itching to jump in. How's the game for newcomers?
Best it's ever been
I know this is all exiting but after leaving the Nintendo scene and playing other games I realised that if any other game producer did what Nintendo did with splatoon 3 there would be uproar at a company basically just releasing an update for $60. If you think about this splatoon 3 is basically just an updated splatoon 2. It's splatoon 2 with a few more weapons, a new campaign and some fixes and changes to features. Still looks great though
Ea does it every year except sometimes they take steps backwards
I pre-ordered it, but I really wish it had couch co-op.
so excited to have it friday!
Ngl that just sounds really confusing, convoluted and annoying for a mode, I think it just affecting story mode is good enough.
I am sooooo excited for Splat 3! After playing in the Splatfest I genuinely could not go back to Splat 2 at all. It was nowhere near as fun and I just couldn't get back into it, rip.
How do you have access to the single player if the game hasn’t released yet?
Could easily be watching splatoon 1 or 2 in this vid, i wouldnt know.
I went out this morning to Walmart to see if I could grab splatoon 3 a few hours early but they didn’t have any out….so I bought a switch oled and bought it digitally lol
Does it have a four player version that a family can play together, like Mario Kart?
