How and When to Harvest Canna Lily Seeds and Grow Them Into Plants Plus Propagating Canna Rhizomes

  • When's the best time to harvest your Canna Lily seeds? I usually start at the end of August and continue into October to harvest my Canna Lily seeds. I wait until the seed pods turn dark brown and crack open on their own to harvest the seeds.
    After harvesting the seeds, they need to be scarified to germinate. I use a rotary tool to scarify the seeds. I find the rotary tool is the easiest method to scarify. I then leave the seeds in hot tap water for one week until a root emerges. I then plant them in a food container with a lid to keep the humidity in.
    For Canna Lilies that don't produce seeds, I propagate those varieties by dividing the rhizome with my shovel. I break off a few sprouts from the mother plant and just replant the smaller rhizome. Propagating Canna Lilies by seeds or by rhizome division will keep your garden full of these beautiful plants.

      Your welcome, I like making videos that have all the information in one video. When I first started watching youtube to learn about tropical plants, it was frustrating searching through a channel’s library to find a part 2 and 3.

      I grew my canna from seed this year. I started them mid April in doors. I'm in Colorado. Will they grow a rhyzome before end of fall season? I have put so much care into them. It will hurt my heart to know I can't save them from our harsh winters. You have beautiful Canna's.

    Thanks so much for this video! I'm trying my hand at growing some from seed this year. I didn't boil or otherwise scarify my seeds. Maybe this is why it took longer for them to grow. Anyway, I have 3 little ones growing right now. I shared your video with my cousin.❤

    I don't understand, In nature the seeds wound dry out, fall to the ground and germinate in the spring when the temps get warm.

    • @Tropifornia
      @Tropifornia  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Scarifying the seeds just starts the process sooner than if left to germinate on their own.

    Thank you for an excellent video, as a newbie to growing Cannas am curious to understand that when the seeds are harvested in early autumn do you scarify and germinate the seeds throughout the winter so they are established by early spring? Thank you for any advice ( am located in Uk btw)

    • @Tropifornia
      @Tropifornia  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t scarify until late winter and germinate them in water right away and grow the seedlings indoors under a grow light. Then plant them in the spring.

      Thanks for subscribing! Store the seeds in a dry area like in a small jar or paper envelope.

      Thank you, I’m in California. I am using native soil and I do lots of composting to enrich the soil. This video shows how I created a lush garden. th-cam.com/video/49aP1tp7kDw/w-d-xo.html
