  • the lakeshore limited from boston to chicago. well technically i start in providence rhode island aboard my mbta commuter rail train ride to boston. then i spend some time in the secret metropolitan lounge in south station before boarding the lakeshore limited at 12:50 pm, where i will ride in a room so small that it's called a "roomette" all the way from boston to chicago.
this is the first leg of a six leg journey

My theory for why the LSL was parked so far away is to keep the diesel fumes outside the covered area, you can see that they have the engine right outside the end of the roof

Ah, the Viewliner II experience 😂
    Cons:
You can't pee in the room.
    Pros:
Other people haven't peed in the room.
    Nice video!

I did this journey starting out from Boston on Christmas Day 1980. Back then many trains had cars that were "heritage fleet" - the cars Amtrak took over when it was created in 1971. Only the Empire Builder had Superliners.

Priority for me for any Amtrak Coach ride would be having a cooler with my own food.
I wonder what was going on, for your trip? My guess is there was some corporate behind-the-scenes problem they wouldn't be disposed to share (paycheck problems? Some kind of bad news? Who knows. . .) 🤷
For sure, I would have had my own food, though. Last Amtrak Coach trip I had *several* coolers and other bags with snacks & etc.
I have a certain diet anyway that prompts me to do so.

I've traveled the Lake Shore Limited a lot, esp between Cleveland and Syracuse, and thete are always a lot of Amish traveling. They seem to prefer the train to riding the Dog!

Fun fact, the Boston bound Lake Shore Limited trains have the viewliner cars in the front of the ge genesis diesel while the ones bound to NYC have all the viewliners at the back of the train.

Nice to see a Viewliner II on the Boston leg. When I did this trip in 2021 it was still a Viewliner I.
As for the position of the train at BOS, this may be due to wanting to vent the Diesel locomotive to the sky.

Wait until you experience the Metropolitan Lounge at the new Moynihan Train Hall...next level. I upped my Guest Rewards level on the strength in part of having more frequent access to this gem.

Chicago and Boston both have 3 story houses with wooden back porches and at one time they both had similar L trains in the city that were almost like each other except as where Boston had outside hung sliding doors and Chicago had bus like blinker doors and the L structures in the center of the city had cross bars trestles under the tracks to provide as much sunlight as possible to be on the streets. The L trains were of the PCC type. But Boston had longer L cars than Chicago whuch had to make tight turns around the center of the city and were therefore shorter.

my train trip is Portland Oregon to Chicago on the Empire Builder, Chicago to NYC on the LakeShore Ltd., NYC to NOLA on the Crescent, NOLA to LA on the Sunset Ltd and LA to Portland on the Coast Starlight. I think I'm going to try for a bedroom.

A pity the subtitles are so intrusive, at times covering the bottom third of the video. Would like to be able to turn them off.
An epic journey and video nonetheless.

I can remember reading someone at amtrak came up with the hair brain ideal that people didn't want to eat together in the dinning cars after they got the new cars now they're using those nice diners like lounge cars and serving microwave food , if that doesn't suck idk what does 🙁

So typical of Amtrak's inept management. We would never tolerate this nonsense in Australia, where the catering [mostly from Gate Gourmet} on our regional services is quite good. On the Journey's Beyond trains like the "Indian Pacific" it's mostly upmarket gourmet product.

The trip would just as enjoyable by bus. Amtrak is by far the worst train system on the planet; food is garbage, seats are as uncomfortable as park benches, and restrooms are hardly ever cleaned.
