Strap yourself in for one of the grittiest and best sci-fi movies ever made. The social commentary of this movie is truly off the scale. One of the greatest philosophies of this movie is that ironically the more alien he became physically, the more humane he became psychologically. He began to truly understand the plight of the Prawns making him more in touch with his own humanity.
I haven't watched the reaction yet and it's been years since I watched the movie, but I remember thinking at the end it would be neat if they did a followup movie in twice the amount of time they said it would take to return to their world - a there and back trip. A truly long play.
I am still speechless how the special effects of a 30 Million movie could look three times better than anything that is produced today with 200 Million.
One of the best sci-fi movies ever made. 15 years later and it still looks so good, the action was great and Sharlto Copley’s performance as Wikus was fantastic, he killed it in his first role.
This is such a well crafted movie. It makes good use of the documentary style, throws out the tropes of super-advanced or monstrously aggressive aliens for somewhat stupid and pitiable ones, has a decent helping of comedy and action, and uses it all as a metaphor for apartheid. Top notch entertainment imho.
@@swanronson173 Thank God the aliens are not strategic or else they would obliterate us with the potent advanced weapons. ------ It's not that they are stupid, they are in a situation fighting to find food on an Alien planet. ------ Such an amazing concept and such out of this world movie execution. As shitty as he acted for a lot of it, I feel like I can't blame him for a lot of it. He was just a normal dude in WAY over his head and not thinking rationally
As someone who as a teen lived a little while in Apartheid era South Africa, and instantly recognized Soweto as being "District 9" this movie will always have a huge impact on me, reminding me of the policies of the Apartheid Government of the time I lived there.
The language used by the aliens (clicking sounds) was created by rubbing a pumpkin. And the first documentary-style film to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar at the 2010 Academy Awards.
Wikus was a bad guy with no empathy for the aliens until he turned part alien himself and became an outcast from human society whom the higher-ups wanted to use as a weapon. Until that point, he was a bureaucratic drone who did what he was told without questioning its morality. He was an example of what Hannah Arendt called "the banality of evil." He redeemed himself, but there was a strong element of self-interest in his actions.
I agree with your take that Wikus is an example of what Arendt called the “banality of evil”; however, I’ll push back on the claim that he was a “bad guy". District 9 holds up a mirror to each of us. Wikus’s actions lack deliberate malice or intent to harm, instead reflecting an uncritical acceptance of the prejudice around him, to which he unthinkingly contributes. If badness includes unexamined complicity in harmful systems, then all of us have the potential to perpetuate harm by passively accepting societal biases or by simply doing our jobs without reflection. This insight pushes us to consider our own responsibilities as individuals-to remain vigilant about the roles we play in larger systems, even when our actions feel benign or routine.
Excellent analysis. I'm glad to see many comments mention the concept of the banality of evil! In so many modern reactions to the film that I've seen, the reactors are too quick to label Wikus as an irredeemable scumbag without appreciation for the fact that this is crucial to his arc; At the start, Wikus truly is little more than a cog in a broken machine- it's a tough pill to swallow, but the reality- as is beautifully illustrated in this film, is that if someone is so thoroughly entrenched in a society like his, where cruelty is routine, and wicked actions are constantly downplayed, the everyman can very easily become complacent, and even complicit without even grasping just how far they've fallen. Powerful stuff
Man Neill Blomkamp is a master at these lower budget sci fi movies. Chappie gets a lot of hate but imo it’s incredible. His OATS STUDIOS shorts are fantastic too
Anyone who hates Chappie is an idiot. And I wholeheartedly agree with you about the Oats Studio shorts. I really wish he'd turn Zygote into a full length film. And a few more episodes of God would make me happy too.

Sharlto Copley was so believable as Wikus... emotional rollercoaster! Teasers and hints about the making of District 10 still abound, I'm so ready to hear what happened to Christopher and Wikus
Yes, the implication with the final shot is that is Wikus, completely transformed into a Prawn. I do believe Christopher would come back when he said he would, and I think they would definitely try to rescue the remaining Prawns left on Earth (which now includes Wikus), but I also think that the Prawns would want justice for the experiments that MNU was conducting. Human governments who were hoping to gain from MNU's experiments would never agree to that because it would mean admitting they had a hand in it. Those same greedy governments and MNU would also probably try to keep as much Prawn technology as they could, and you have to wonder how far the Prawns could be pushed before they decide to just kill us all and raid the cat food factories.
Sharlto Copley is just such an underrated actor. He does a perfect mercenary/psychopath in "Elysium" and is a total hoot in a wide variety of roles in "Hardcore Henry"

It's actually a small miracle they could make such a crazy, high concept action movie with tons of aliens and they made it for ~$30 mil. So many of the CGI techniques in this movie are ahead of their time. Really wish more scifi was made like this with real alien tech and lore.
Sharlto Copley did such a great job as Wicus. Speaking as a South African and a native Afrikaans speaker I enjoyed this movie a lot, especially the swearing.
I saw this when it first came out. it so different from any other alien movie. I loved your reaction to it! Again, watching your reaction was like seeing it for the first time! I remain, humbly, one of your biggest fans. Thank you.
I was born and raised in Johannesburg, always enjoy this one. Now you have to see 'Elysium", another fantastic sci fi movie by the same people. Thanks Jen.
@@johnberg9497probably just what we now know about them being horrible people, maybe this this was stuff that was known on the down-low even as far back as when that was filmed.
The Director of this movie also made Elysium with Matt Damon. It has a similar feel. Many people don't like Elysium, but I think it's underrated. He also made Chappie, which I recognize is not a good movie, but for some reason I appreciated it.
The prawns they're likening the aliens to are not the kind that swim in the sea, but the Parktown prawn, aka African king cricket. They're among the largest extant insects in the world reaching up to 7cm long (2.8 inches) and are related to Peter Jackson's nightmare fuel, the giant weta (also up to 7cm, but significantly fatter). The aliens definitely more closely resemble them than the sea creatures.
Hey Jen, This movie is so innovative and was made on only a $30 million dollar budget and was guided by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Director). The making of this movie was a triumph of indie movie making. -------- Jen When this came out it literally blew my mind. ------ Showing ideas are more important than budget.
The alien camp was a real suburb of Soweto, South Africa called Chiawelo. They shot it in winter when everything was dry and brown to make it look more bleak. Ironically, while they were shooting, Chiawelo itself was undergoing forced relocations in real life where residents were being moved to government subsidized housing under the Reconstruction and Development Programme.
It's amazing that this tremendous, innovative SF movie, which was a huge success when it came out in 2009, has been almost forgotten today, with very few views by reactors. One reason they had a comparatively low budget was that they were allowed to use, for their District 9 scenes, part of a real slum that was being demolished. Therefore, they did not have to build any sets for those scenes. Everyone wants a sequel, but sadly, it is unlikely there will ever be one.
This is a fantastic movie. MNU is pure evil. Especially Wikus cold blooded father in law. Corporate greed. I would love a sequel. Actor Sharlto Copley did an amazing job playing Wikus. Jen, I recommend the futuristic sci-fi Elysium (2013)staring Matt Damon. It's has a good rating. Also you'll get to see Sharlto Copley (Wikus) play a completely different character. The contrast between Wikus and his character in Elysium is amazing. He looks so different. Hope you'll react to it.
I wondered how long it was going to take you to finally watch this movie. Director Neil Blomkamp also directed the movie "Elysium", starring Matt Damon and once again, Sharlto Copley who played the main character Wikus in this movie. I highly recommend watching that one too.
Love this one from the release. Definitely a great take on what a refugee is and how they're treated, how you are treated as one, and so one. Best way, IMHO, on showing tall the angles.
This is a very underrated film. I remember watching it in the theater when it came out...and I was captivated by it. A great departure from the regular "alien come to earth" theme.
This film was nominated for best picture at the Oscar’s that year. One of the very best sci fi movies ever made. I hope it never gets a sequel. It’s perfect.
Hey Jen, Thank you for reacting to this amazing movie Dasha. Neill Blomkamp did an amazing job on this, I loved it! ------ The concept of this movie is so innovative, action-packed, thought-provoking, horrifying, and endearing all at the same time to simultaneously illicit all these emotions from me to the next level, very few movies I have seen make me want to be a professional writer or storyteller. This is one of them.
Just found your channel through TH-cam recommendation. I'm happy that I have. Love your reactions! Insta subscribed! This movie is one of the best sci-fi movies ever!
Watching it again, I actually wonder if the exoskeleton was sentient or at least somewhat organic. It knew who were combatants and allies without a driver, opened up it's cockpit for him, and it started to look exhausted near the end. The suit even opened up to let him out before just falling backwards instead of forwards like if it was just a suit. Might be looking too much into it but it looked interesting.
Christopher was probably either one of the leaders or more likely a technician who survived whatever killed the others. That would be how he knew to do the tech things he was doing and why he was smarter than the others. If they did have castes like insects, then a genetic memory could explain why his son also knew so much, that is they are born with the basic knowledge their caste needs. The RPG rocket exploded after it was caught because they had a self-destruct fuse in them. This blows up the rocket f it misses or fails to explode normally so the battlefield has one less piece of dangerous ordnance lying around. Had Vikus known that he would have thrown it away more quickly.
I really want a sequel or prequel where we get to see more of their homeworld. Though I guess not knowing where they're from and how they got here is part of why this movie is so good.
Peter Jackson is such a visionary. Plus he launched the careers of Niel Blomkamp and Guillermo Del Toro. The man know God own reflection when he sees it. ------ Peter Jackson can spot another genius a mile away.
The director Neill Blomkamp adapted this from his short film. Currently he’s talked about a sequel in the works aiming to be much larger in scale and length. For the time it was released it was a success because if it’s low budget. I believe he saved costs by film in Johannesburg and using unknown actors at the time. Since then Blomkamp has done more sci-fi movies and shorts. He even released an anthology series named “Oats Studios”. The main actor Sharlto Copley went on to do more film as this becoming his breakout role. Since then the two of them have collaborated at lot. I’d recommend Elysium and Chappie. I still wish for Blomkamp to do a Star Wars film but nothing so far.
Before I forget, I should mentioned that there is another movie from the same director that you might like: _CHAPPiE_ (2015). It's about a robot instead of aliens, but the style will be familiar.
28:12 Easter eggs! Tetra Vaal (or Tetravaal) has its claws sunk into Neil Blomkamp's universe. It's his first short film, and also plays a major role in his movie Chappie. Apparently Elysium is also part of this universe. I personally enjoyed all of them and think you would, too. District 9 is outstanding, Chappie is right up my alley (even Die Antwoord, I still love them), and Elysium is definitely a fun watch.
Fun fact: the original concept for the movie was to have a Halo movie. Unfortunately, they couldn’t design a story for Halo at the time to be on the big screen. Neil Blomkamp wrote a story and it became district 9. Funny enough. That’s why all the alien weapons look the way they do, the concept was from the Halo video games.

Thanks Jen.
What about 'Chappie'? I work with a South African girl here in New Zealand and she hated the way Die Antwoord was in the movie
@@ctakitimu What reason did she say for hating "the way Die Antwoord was in the movie"? Their characters or just using them in general??
@@johnberg9497probably just what we now know about them being horrible people, maybe this this was stuff that was known on the down-low even as far back as when that was filmed.
The Director of this movie also made Elysium with Matt Damon. It has a similar feel. Many people don't like Elysium, but I think it's underrated. He also made Chappie, which I recognize is not a good movie, but for some reason I appreciated it.
I forgot how f*#&ing mental this film is!
I was just going to say the same thing! I forgot how good it was and how it turned all the "alien invasion" tropes upside down.
If you liked this you will like Elysium. Chappie divides audiences.
I like the concept of Chappie, I despise Die Antwoord
It's crazy to think how long ago this came out, as it still feels recent. Holds up fantastically!
18:42 "girl you don't even know the half of it" 🤣
Great movie. The way they put it together, part documentary, part regular movie. Made it feel like you were watching true events.
"He's kind of like Garrus from Mass Effect" 😍
That's a "tactical" sweater vest that he was wearing Jen! 😂 ❤
I never looked at prawns the same after this movie Jen
One of my favorite movies, was so excited when I saw this in my feed, can’t wait to see your face when stuff starts to get real 😂
District 9 and Elysium are a vibe. Need more movies like these
The alien camp was a real suburb of Soweto, South Africa called Chiawelo. They shot it in winter when everything was dry and brown to make it look more bleak. Ironically, while they were shooting, Chiawelo itself was undergoing forced relocations in real life where residents were being moved to government subsidized housing under the Reconstruction and Development Programme.
criminal that we never got a sequel to this.
I love stories where a jerk is forced through hardship and has to learn to humility. Very Johnny Tremain.
This is a great movie 🍿
This is a fantastic movie.
MNU is pure evil. Especially Wikus cold blooded father in law. Corporate greed.
I would love a sequel. Actor Sharlto Copley did an amazing job playing Wikus.
Jen,
I recommend the futuristic sci-fi Elysium (2013)staring Matt Damon. It's has a good rating. Also you'll get to see Sharlto Copley (Wikus) play a completely different character. The contrast between Wikus and his character in Elysium is amazing. He looks so different.
Hope you'll react to it.
Thank you Miss Jen for the movie. Have a good day.😊
Love your reactions, Jen! This was a mind blower!
I wondered how long it was going to take you to finally watch this movie. Director Neil Blomkamp also directed the movie "Elysium", starring Matt Damon and once again, Sharlto Copley who played the main character Wikus in this movie. I highly recommend watching that one too.
Such an amazing movie! Yes, that was the protagonist with the flower at the end.
Another great Alien movie to watch is...
Alien Nation (movie 1988)...
p.s. the tv show was good too.
Love this one from the release. Definitely a great take on what a refugee is and how they're treated, how you are treated as one, and so one. Best way, IMHO, on showing tall the angles.
Hi Jen hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too!
As dramatic and suspenseful as this movie is, the comedic moments and jokes that happen unexpectedly are really hilarious!
This movie blew me away when I saw it opening night, and it's been one of my all-time favorites ever since. It's just so good.
This really is a great movie. Happy to see your reaction.
I love the music in this movie.
9 hours ago is crazy a literal modern classic
How have I never noticed the ultrasound images at the end? Thanks for catching that!
yes that was him at the end
This is such a great movie.
You'd probably enjoy 'Alien Nation' (1988). James Caan, Mandy Patinkin, Terence Stamp. Sci-fi / action / thriller.
There absolutely IS a sequel in development. Niell Blomkamp confirmed he is working on the story and that it will happen.
I believe this was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
This reaction just reinforced my opinion that you guys are the best reactors on TH-cam!
Just found your channel through TH-cam recommendation. I'm happy that I have. Love your reactions!

This movie is one of the best sci-fi movies ever!
36:30 "Pig." 😲 I definitely didn't remember _that_ moment! 🐖
This is such a thought-provoking movie and before it was released, I hadn't even thought about South Africa having a film industry.
This is one of my favorite movies.
I have never wanted a sequel as much as I wanted one for this movie.
This was one friggin crazy movie!
Dude got taken out by a flying pig 😂
I love district 9
As always, good summary. 😁👍
I really want a sequel or prequel where we get to see more of their homeworld. Though I guess not knowing where they're from and how they got here is part of why this movie is so good.
That's right, in the end the main character completely turned into an alien
Elysium(2013), Chappie(2015) are the sort of movies to watch if you like this. Also I'll add another modern sci-fi Finch(2021).
There's a good video on here about the effects: "How Did District 9's VFX Look SO GOOD?"
One of the greatest modern sci fi flicks!
Holy shit it’s been a while. This is one of those criminally underrated movies. It’s so well done. The world building is extravagant.
Chappie also includes Sharlto Copley vs Hugh Jackman + intro to Die Antwoord! Turned out to be a real gem!
It's a shame Die Antwoord are evil.
I don't think I've ever seen you THIS invested, Jen! Also : "Garrus from MASS EFFECT" what now? Do you have a second channel where you play games?!
I hope this gets a sequel
Good choice Jen!
