I was a soldier. I do not want to see a sequel, because any decent race is going to send a rescue op, and first step in a rescue op is establishing a perimeter. And we know how humans react to shows of force. You concentrate camp the species, they are not going to react well when their national guard shows up to document what we did and begin the evac, and you can bet they will set down hard perimeter defense.

Initiallly, Blomkamp was supposed to direct a cinema adaptation of the Halo franchise (co- produced by Peter Jackson) but the project was put down (the studio execs didn't like the look of the test scenes)
District 9 (which is inpired by one of Blomkamp's short) was a message to the studio "look what you missed"

Hi Angela, so happy you reacted to this film. One of my favorite sci-fi films of all time. It is hard to watch at times, even though I own it on
DVD and I know what happens. But it's so beautiful, visceral, violent, and unfortunately the realism & social commentary is heightened by all of these elements.
Still hoping beyond hope with the other fans that the sequel still comes out, but you never know these days.
Oh yeah, everyone else has recommended Neill Blomkamp's other movies: Elysium, Chappie, and Hardcore Henry.

My thought on the black fluid, consider how their tech is genetically based, designed the modify the body for a task. What likely happened is the one who had the command gene died & effectively, the worker drones couldn't use the ship. Christopher spent 20 years recreating the gene so he could take command of the ship. The species is clearly cast based, with most being simple drones/workers, while Christopher was clearly of the scientist/geneticist cast

Just an amazing movie, came out of nowhere. I saw it five times in the theaters because I kept bringing everyone I know who would come with me to go see it. Such an interesting variation on the "aliens come to Earth" trope. I can't really think offhand of another movie that has run with the premise that when aliens come, almost all of the "smart ones" are gone and the ones we actually have contact with are basically their version of worker bees who don't know what to do because their control team is gone. We don't get many South African films here, so the apartheid allegory was a very different theme for the American audience; we need more of that sort of thing (studies of other cultures and the issues facing people in other parts of the world) in our films.

one of my favorite theories is that the prawns where actually not prawns but after an accident at the ship happened the fuel or whatever it was that turned Wickus turned all the Aliens into prawns that's why they seemed primitive and didnt land or open the ship, they couldn't work the ship when the humans cut it open, Christopher was maybe exposed less and thats why he was smarter then the rest

The dynamic of this all happening in South Africa is an interesting parallel. Wikus is an fascinating flawed protagonist. He has major failings, but has his good moments too. Christopher and his little one were my favorites as well. I want a sequel, but I want it to tell more about the aliens and their society and how it works more. Why does Christopher and his little one seem more technically proficient? What is the social hierarchy of the aliens. Why did they come to Earth in the first place?
I actually put Wikus wife above Wikus in the like ranking.
Your South African Wikus accent imitation sounded a bit more posh British. 😄 Mine's not any better, sounds more Aussie.
And btw your new highlights look great.

The theory is that either there was a cast systems or a disease had affected the aliens intelligence. That's why they were stuck in the ship and needed rescue.
Christopher, his son and to some extent his friend were able to keep their high IQ.
The Aliens left behind require rescue to get treatment, or at least be back in the hive.
As to if the aliens might return and bring war? well they had a lot of weapons for a peaceful race :)

  • @SungJaeUng3
    @SungJaeUng3 ปีที่แล้ว

This movie came out around the time that the question of immigration and refugees was really becoming a contentious debate. This was very much meant to be an allegory for that.
That part at the beginning when they talk about it being a humanitarian effort where the aliens were starving so the humans shuttled them down to the ground, and that they were relocating the aliens to a safer and cleaner location were propaganda. They removed the aliens from the ship, because they wanted to study the technology. They wanted to clear out District 9 because they were wanting to confiscate any more alien technology they could find, and look for the command module. This is a story about a minority group that is seen as foreign and scary are being forcibly relocated. The official narrative is that everything the government is doing is for the aliens' own good, and they were providing some assistance like they said they were doing, but the real reason the government was doing all of this is because the aliens had resources that the human government wanted. In essence, this is a sci-fi retelling of The Trail of Tears.
And the ending where people are speculating about what Christopher Johnson was going to do now that he's free and "what if he comes back with a fleet and declares war" serves to pose the question "when people are violently repressed and treated like lesser beings, if they are ever able to get out from under that repressive rule, what do you think they're going to do?" You hope that they will take the high road and forgive, but if Christopher Johnson did come back at the head of an armada, it's not like humans didn't give him plenty of reasons to do exactly that.
The answer is to not abuse people in the first place.

District 9 wasnt a concentration camp, it was just a slum the aliens were forced to live in. Its based on an apartheid era slum called District 6 in Cape Town. The South African government would force blacks to live in slums with no access to jobs, education, or public services until cities grew too close to the slums, and then they would designate the slums as a whites only area under the Group Areas Act and forcibly remove all the blacks to other further away slums, justifying it by saying how dangerous it was to allow blacks to live too close to whites and how the slums had become unfit for habitation. The documentary part at the start of this movie is depicting what it was like during the 1970s while they were forcibly removing 60,000 people from the slum of District 6, with things like forcing people who couldnt read to sign away their property rights, subjecting them to the whims of a court system they had no hope to navigate, or just outright rampant violence, abuse, and murder, because nobody saw them as human. The way they spread the rumors about Wikkus having sex with the aliens in this is to ruin his reputation and isolate him from his family is exactly the kind of stuff the government used to do to any whites who opposed apartheid. Millions of blacks had their properties forcibly taken from them under the Group Areas Acts from 1951 until 1991, and apartheid didnt even officially end until the first election in South Africa with universal suffrage in 1994.

Great reaction ... you look radiant 👍👍😊😊
However, I am a bit confused about something. Why you are assigning a derogatory meaning to the word "Prawns". That's what HUMANS do, assume that various terms MUST be a putdown, but that's not always the case. You can see in the movie that, the aliens had no issue with the term, and it actually was an apt description ... they *WERE* bottom feeders. Plus, the movie never gave us an actual name of their race. We don't know why, but just because some people meant it to be a negative term, that doesn't mean that it started out that way, or that everyone meant it that way. It really has more to do with WHO is saying it and what THEY meant.
For example, we call those little things red and/or black things that bite us sometimes, "ants". How do we know whether they would object to that term or not ??? Are we being derogatory, or are we just using the word we've all agreed upon ??? It's humans that can take a word that is normal one day and make it the most horrible word in the world the next. They word never changed, but someone decided to make it a thing that they could get angry over ... and then it was bad.

It’s really sad that Neill has never quite reached the same heights of debut film. Chappie and Elysium are not terrible, but nowhere near the freshness of District 9.

My theory is the ship is a slaver's ship. All of the 'lower cast' aliens are actually lots of distinct species from other worlds that have gone through the same transformation as Wickus. It's how the slavers impose control over their captures. The ship was headed to Earth to gather more cargo when it broke down and the slavers abandoned it. I suspect Christopher was originally a member of the slaver's ship/species that violated 'the code' and was punished by being made a slave as well. If this theory is used as a basis for a sequel (or prequel), it would be insanely epic!

Let's not forget that Christopher screwed over Wickus too, on saying that he was going to help fix him, but it was all a lie just to manipulate Wickus. They both used each other. But fortunately in the end they became friends and Wickus risk his life just to help Christopher and his son. And the fact that Angela didn't realize it and showed no empathy to Wickus, just left me shocked. Because they both were victims and good guys. And Wickus was a hero in the end.

@@JillMachado-yb3vg Chrisopher never lied. He said how long it would take from the beginning. He continued to reinforce that he would be back in 3 years to help Wikus out. Christopher was never manipulating anyone. He was the one that got manipulated all the time. Threatening his son, threatening arrest, threatening his life. Not to mention the fact that the whole reason Wikus needed help was because of him touching and illegally searching the home to begin with.

@@JillMachado-yb3vg He always intended to help him. Just after he found out his people were literal test subjects, he felt that that was a more pressing issue to deal with than turning Wikus back right away, and doing so would have used up valuable fuel which could shave time off his journey back home and thus cut down on the amount of time his people were experimented on. He still fully intended on curing him, just not fast enough for Wikus' liking.

@@target844 and after it was abolished 30 years ago. I more or less recently had a pretty deep look into Cape Town and the most bewildering fact to me is that the golf club is like 20min by foot away from a sea of shacks. If you walk a bit too far on the promenade you get into areas that people would advise you not to be in. It's kinda wild these things are so fresh and palpable. I believe this gives Wikus' little "better late than never" thing after having "walked in their shoes for a day" a whole new dimension and it's a bit sad that a lot of people don't connect that, this being a "south-african movie", as i don't think the movie is very subtle about it, but more likely because people don't even have a faint idea what went down and, imo more importantly, when. And while there's a growing portion of the non-white population there making big strides it's gonna take a few generations before one can even remotely think about saying that segregation is over and actually meaning it.
I recommend 'Invictus' as a palate-cleanser on the whole issue.
