Hi @CalebHarms7090! I wanted to reply to your comment but no longer see it. Thanks so much for commenting and for sharing your experience with expanded distribution. You're absolutely right! The royalty rate for our books sold via Amazon while enrolled in expanded distribution does remain the same, while our books sold via the other expanded channels are set at the lower royalty rate. I'll make sure to reflect that in the edits of this video.
The order of publishing is still important and very relevant, because while we can opt in/ out of expanded distribution via KDP for our paperbacks & hardcovers, IngramSpark uses an all or nothing approach; meaning if I publish over on IngramSpark first, I no longer can use the same ISBN to publish that same book over on Amazon. We can only use both options (Amazon Narrow & IngramSpark) if we publish via KDP first.
I personally prefer using IngramSpark for my expanded distribution, because even if we chose Amazon expanded distribution, they still distribute through IngramSpark in territories Amazon doesn’t have a printing presence anyway. Yet, our royalty will be lower than what it would have been if we had chosen Ingram Spark's for our expanded distribution in the first place.
Turning expanded distribution off once it has been selected, however, is quite a pain. Per Amazon, it takes between 6 to 8 weeks for the system to recognize the change. In reality, it's often more like 3 months, with a lot of back and forth on Ingram Spark's end.
So while we can change our mind at any time by de-selecting the expanded distribution option over on Amazon, we often either have to wait for the system to clear or have to file a form with Ingram Spark in order to transfer the distribution ownership away from Amazon.

A question on I.S. specifically hard cover, I’ve read a lot lately about poor quality (color, trim, etc) more recently than in the past. This is unfortunate because there’s not a lot of alternative since KDP has such a high number page count on hard cover.

Hi Dawn! I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying my videos! When it comes out our print-on-demand hardcovers, the colors are unfortunately not as vibrant as they are in paperbacks or with most offset printers. Regarding trim errors, oftentimes those are due to the incorrect setup of the submitted files and/ or illustration sizes. And while IS (and KDP) do have occasional hiccups, I would like to think it's not that their occurrences are increasing, but that simply more people are (1) writing books and making use of those services, and (2) sharing about their experiences. Hi, Eevi! Thank you so much for all of your helpful videos! I would like to publish a hardcover option to be available on Amazon and other retailers (will purchase separate ISBNs from Bokers). If I publish through KDP first (non-expanded distribution), then IngramSparks for expanded distribution (and for the hardcover), will Amazon accept the hardcover ISBN that IngramSparks pushes to them? But I have authored many other books and had them on ED and now I see that I should really change that for all of my books! You're so welcome, Katherine! To revers expanded distribution on KDP, note that this might take a while to no longer be in the system, meaning that once you turn your expanded distribution off over on KDP, you will want to wait at least 3 months before you submit it over on IngramSpark. Good luck!

Great info! Would the hardcover option be available for the amazon book? Or is that a second ISBN for the same book?
Hi Tom; Amazon is currently testing hardcovers; but those still require a minimum page count of 76+ pages, which is still a bit long for children's books. So if you're looking to create a hardcover version, I would recommend using IngramSpark. I have a separate video on Hardcovers and also on ISBNs, so hopefully those videos will help!

What a brilliant video - shame I had already put the IS book on before KDP - can I sort this out by taking it off IS, then publishing on Kdp, then going back and putting it up on IS?
Thanks so much, Lucy! I have never done it this way around. I only had it first on Amazon (with expanded distribution), and then turned expanded distribution off. It took about 3 months to 'clear' the system, where I was finally able to publish it via IngramSpark for my expanded distribution. So it took quite a while. But again, that was the other way around.

I'm so happy to hear you've found this helpful! Yes, you can absolutely turn off expanded distribution. So as long as you've used your own ISBN, you won't need to use another one in order to set it up over on Ingram Spark. Just make sure that once you have turned it off, you wait 3-4 months before setting it up over on IngramSpark, to ensure the system no longer carries it. I so hope this helps! I'm at the beginning, I can't activate the possibility to opt for Extended Distribution. The cover is thin. What do you advise?
Happy new year to you as well, Sergiu. Based on what you've shared with me here, not being able to select extended distribution could be that you may have selected the "low content" selection. Books such as workbooks or coloring books, or books that would require kids to make their own additions to the content are classified as low content books, and are often not eligible for extended distribution. Hi Mary! That's okay! That's something we can always turn off. It would just take a couple of months to "clear the system." So if this is something you've been thinking about doing. perhaps pick a time you know is a slow one for your book.

My book has already been published on both Amazon kdp and Ingram Spark. I didn't check the Amazon-only box because I was told to never do this. That I would be locked into Amazon.
However, after watching this video I'm not sure this is a bad thing.
Can I still set it up as you described in this video?
You're so very welcome, Linda! Regarding your question, this would depend on what formats you have set up over on IngramSpark. Let's say you have only set up your hardcover over on IngramSpark (NOT your paperback), and you have set up your paperback over on KDP, and have chosen expanded distribution. In that case, you should still be good to go, and those two platforms should not interfere with one another.
Great video, I've heard that through Ingramspark that authors have had to pay money back to them because books have been returned when not sold. Is that a real concern?

This is very helpful. Can you use the same ISBN on Ingram Spark that you used on KDP? I plan on publishing with KDP first (uncheck expanded distribution). Then plan to publish the paperback with Ingram Spark.
Hi Zenful! Yes, if (1) you're using a purchased ISBN and (2) you're using it for the same format (e.g. paperback), you will want to use the same ISBN. I so hope this helps!
Something I haven’t seen addressed yet, but I’m just starting my deep dive. Do you need a separate ISBN number if either the paperback and or hardcover is translated into a different language, i.e. Spanish for the same book?

Hi there! How are you? Do you mean if you publish the same book on KDP and Ingramspark? If so, and if you have used your own ISBN on KDP, then you can use the same ISBN over on Ingram, as long as it is for the same format. That is, if you published your paperback over on KDP using your own ISBN, you can upload your paperback over on IngramSpark using the same ISBN. Hello there! Yes, we can un-check expanded distribution any time. HOWEVER, it will take up to 3 months to get cleared in the system. So once you un-check it in KDP, be sure to wait around 3 months before setting it up over on IngramSpark. I hope this helps.

Can you still put the book on Ingramspark if kdp has assigned the ISBN to your book?
Hi there! If you are using KDP's free ISBN, then you will have to purchase a new ISBN for IngramSpark. Please just know that if you are uploading your book in the same format (e.g. paperback) with the new ISBN onto IngramSpark, your book will potentially show up twice on Amazon, each with its one sales page; one with your KDP ISBN, and one with your new ISBN for Ingram Spark.

All traditional publishers use external printers. So it's quite the norm to use printers other than KDP. I hope this helps.
