In a zombie apocalypse, you should try to keep your family alive, but not die protecting them, especially if they are going to die anyways.

The best opening scene in cinema horror history for me. Immediately sets the tone of no one being safe and our protagonist being a survivor, not a hero.

@@admirosmanovic1368 not at all, this movie is a 1000% better then scream especially for an opening (scream was a typical slasher flick we all knew she was going to get Hitchcock', were this is pure adrenaline and terror but shows the reality of life & death, he leaves his wife to die )

28 Weeks Later and the Dawn of the Dead 2004 remake have absolutely brilliant opening scenes. The rest of those movies aren’t at all bad, but kind of a let down compared to how they start.

I agree. But in my opinion this scene is best when it starts with the kid being let in the cabin and ending with him on the boat. It really shows that when shit hits the fan, it happens FAST and you have to be ready to make some gut wrenchingly hard decisions at a moment's notice. Not just for the zombie apocalypse, in general.

Those are fully living beings infected with a virus but that's what makes it even scarier as some branch of the rage virus could some day evolve and give something like that... Or not and I'm just dumb but I'm sure ya get it.
The zombie is unrealistic. The infected IS realistic. Maybe not to that extent but anyway.

Love how real this is. Don is not a bad man. When the zombies start bursting through he immediately begins fighting them off. Jacob does for a quick second and then flees. Everyone else runs as well. Don is the last person to start running for his life. Even then, he doesn't run out of the house to escape; his first instinct is to find and protect his wife Alice.
The point here is that Don is not a selfish man. His instincts were to protect, at risk to himself. Running upstairs is not exactly a bright idea when zombies are bursting through the walls, but that's where he heard Alice's voice so he ran up the stairs.
Don's courage in the bedroom is overtaken by his survival instincts. He could have tried to hold the door while Alice grabbed the boy and got into the bathroom. When the zombies burst through he would have likely died. He would have been a selfless hero, a martyr sacrificing everything to save his wife and that boy. But he'd also be dead.
Fear took over and he closed the door on Alice and the boy. We can't judge too harshly. Don was only in a position to fail Alice because he ran to her screams in the first place. He is a regular man, and discovered his limits in this scene.

Then again, even if he wanted to die with his family, that wouldn't have been possible either judging from the fact the zombies would get him before he reached his family if he changed his course.
He was on "flight" mode and nothing could stop that unless he could make his death useful, aka sacrifice himself; which wasn't possible. He didn't have the chance to even make a decision if you think about it. He probably realized what happened after andrenaline wore off.

Some survivors would be killed outright, while most would end up in the ranks of Rage infected. I've always been interested in seeing something like a line chart, or histogram, estimating the numbers, rise and fall, the numbers of infected and survivors. But, by the time a NATO emergency force arrives, there certainly won't be many of the latter to greet them! And most Brits 'reintroduced' were out of the country at the time when the virus escalated - as with Don's kids who were abroad on a school trip. I also wondered what the news reports would have looked like for people watching news broadcasts (until even the media ceased to exist). I loved both the '28' films. And the game Days Gone also has infected in the form of Freakers - about the nearest we'll ever get to a 28 Days Later style of game - as the result of a worldwide man-made virus. Fighting and fleeing a Freaker horde has a similar terrifying shock effect as the chase scene in this video! I too would like to see a 28 Months Later. And also they're not stupid..Like in the first movie they showed a captured zombie on a chained leash attempt to play on the main characters emotions and make him feel sorry for it just so he would get close enough to lash out at him. THIS is how you make an impact which lasts with the audience forever. THIS is how you make an opening scene in your zombie movie. No heroes with big guns, no "man to save the day." just the knitty gritty, harsh reality of what other people will do to survive. Even if it means, in some cases leaving those they love the most being left behind. Sometimes, you have to make choices you'll never know are the right ones as long as you live. That powerful mantra of life and death... we just don't see a deep scene like this anymore in what now is covered in absolute schlock.

@William Braddell Well my stand is Don is indeed a coward, BUT he is a smart coward, he knows it's dangerous to try to rescue his wife and not-his-kid in the same room as zombies are. If Don wanted to survive, he made the right choice, and his wife made the wrong choice. Wasn't Don and his wife trying to survive so they can see their kids, and she fucking left Don just to rescue a kid she barely knows, she put that kid over their kids and it's a disgrace.

@@panther7584 I still wouldn't even put the term coward on Don, even if he made the smartest choice possible that guarantees his survival. He helped and helped as much as he possibly could, just to have no one he helped survive except himself. Yeah, he didn't fight, but not fighting doesn't automatically make you a coward, it means you're smart. Sure, putting his wife and the boy into the picture, maybe you can call it cold-hearted and fucked up, but not cowardly. I would go as far as to say not shutting that door would've been cowardly if he would have frozen or thought about it for too long, both he and the wife and boy would've died, and that would've been a shame, and his own fault for his own death. The wife made the mistake of going after the child, who very well could have hidden from the Infected if he stayed quiet, but doubtful since his screaming brought them here anyway. She instead tried to be a hero, and both she and the boy paid the price. Don tried to stop her, but she made her choice, and scream at him for help seconds before they perish is unfair to Don, and even more unfair to call him cowardly because of something he tried to stop, and couldn't help. I know this is a massive wall of text probably telling you things you already know, but I already wrote this much before realizing it, and I don't wanna rewrite anything, so yeah- he's not a coward or a smart coward. He's just a man who made the hard choice in a split second to live and not die

He was willing to drag his wife to get out, but his wife didn't want to abandon that kid therefore she is not a coward but, like you said, she expected Don, who tried to help her escape, to help them. Being brave doesn't mean you have to help everyone you see, it's practically free for all situation. You are right it is not fair to call him a coward because who the fuck would fight off 3 or 4 infected in a room to save your wife who abandoned you just to help someone she barely knows? I'm still calling him a smart coward anyways because it's true. Still, I'm glad he made it out to be with his kids.

Reasons why don is not a coward:
    1. He has been trying to save his wife and told her the kid would be safe in the closet which they don’t even know, but she slapped don’s hand away and went to save the kid they don’t know, then when the infected came in then she was asking for help while before she had the chance but it’s to late
2.don did not have any weapons against very agile and strong infected people with rage, like don locked the door and the infected still broke it down like come on!
3.don had no time to think straight because he only had seconds before he would be torn a part with his wife and the kid so without thinking straight he leaves his wife, you can’t think straight if you only have seconds left and your in stress and dread
    4. He tried to help the boat guy - @swag master
5.Don had his own kids to think about to get back to and keep them safe. Had his wife left with him, it wouldn’t have led to Don getting infected unintentionally when they reunited, leading to putting their kids in even more danger. - @Sebastian Emond
    6. It was the kid who brought all the infected there in the 1st place, by screaming his lungs off, and his dumbass wife decide to let him in with all the infected on his tail, so thanks to this kid and Don's wife all the other people died or turned into infected, the kid wasn't even theirs, also when the infected busted in Don killed 2 or 3 before having to fall back, thats far from being a coward. - @Armor King
