Thank you! I can't believe I had to scroll down so low to find this comment. The Magic 8 ball was invented sometime around 1946. It was turned into a toy after Mattel bought it in the 50's. So it should have been the best answer in the 70's also. I grew up in the 70's and my cousin and I loved playing with one. Good memories.
I think Charles couldn't think of an answer so he just perposly chose a random answer that he knew didn't make sense/was crap to try and gets some laughs.
+elvicare35 : Yeah, WTF was _that_ about? Charles was notorious for coming up with bizarre answers that are extremely unlikely to match. (Patty Deutsch also had that tendency.)
@ anton: Yeah....kind of arrogant and selfish, if you ask me. Blow the contestant's chances for a win just to show everybody how delightfully creative and offbeat you are. :-\
The audience groaned at the contestant's answer, but in all actuality, she got as many points (?) as she could because two matches was the most she could have gotten.
You can definitely tell that this episode happened after "dinner," when Brett looked like she was struggling to stand up after she got buzzed and didn't look like she knew where she was pointing... lol. Gene probably wasn't wrong though. She probably could've taken on the entire audience and beat 'em!
+Ryan Schroer : True, a bowling ball isn't clear, but that's part of the joke. Madame Lazonga is a _really discount_ fortune teller! But the main reason why "bowling ball" seems to me to be a good answer is that the cadence of the words matches "crystal ball". Same number of syllables; same accented syllables. "Bowling ball" also has the benefit of alliteration, which can have a humorous effect. (All of which is why an answer like "meatball", which is also funny [and is also a common "Match Game" answer in general], isn't quite as good as "bowling ball".)
+Captain Quirk Interesting take. I actually agree with that. A Beer bottle would have been a very funny one. If you want to do balls..a bowling ball would've been the most common one. Disco ball would have been the funniest because of its shiny crystal ball-like nature. Meatball would've been hilarious, especially if Richard had said it("What Brett is..a meatball." This is what made the game so great. On manyof the questions, there were multiple good answers. And that's why Fannie and Patti and Joyce were so great in chair six..off-the-wall responses after a lot of the same answers were given.
+Ryan Schroer A brilliant example of Fannie in chair six was "The Big Bad Wolf couldn't eat the three little Pigs because he was.." While everyone said a variation of full, Fannie went with "Jewish"
Whoever made the music for Match Game was a genius the show was great but without that music, it would not have been as great and memorable and lovable the music really set the tone that this show was SPECIAL and that is the reason to have music in the first place but sadly sometimes the producers don't pick the right music and then wonder why their show failed.
No,"sorry but you are wrong". I didn't make this up. Search here on youtube for Match Game on Entertainment tonight. Listen to the interviews. They did drink. (They don't say Richard did, I'll give you that).
Why Was It So Different back then I mean the world has gotten so bad yet no one like,...I don't know its just so bad now it's all about s.## and drinking when back then it was better I mean mabey people should try to make it be like back then....?
Gene (the host) is HAMMERED in this clip. Notice that in the beginning when he begins leave the panel from talking with Brett & Charles, he bounces of the set, and pours himself back over to the contestants.
I use to watch this show as a child and loved it. I miss the 70's.
Same here!!!
Ditto
Me too.
used to, not use to.
“My answer IS the worst” 😆 His face when he says “I said… cherry” is what MAKES it 🤣😂🤣🤣
"I said, `Cherry'" is perhaps the funniest thing he's ever said on the show, and that's really saying something because he was a master!
Cherry lightbulb was a great comeback.
I love that Gene could just pretend to shoot the whole audience. You sure can't do that today. These guys were actually fun!
I like how Jimmie stood up alongside Brett when she got mad! XD
They had great chemistry during their weeks together on the show!
70's match game was the definition of the show for celebrities' to be human, mess around, have fun, and act crazy with their friends LOL
Match Game reruns helped me get the pandemic. I'll be eternally grateful.
What? You actually WANTED the pandemic?
(I'm kidding, I know you meant "get OVER the pandemic".)
😁😁😁😁😁
The perfect answer would've been "Magic 8 Ball"
3:45 Richard ''Cherry?" Haha RIP Richard Dawson!!
"They certainly know how to warm the cockles of your heart" ~ Gene
I get a kick out of the fact the audience boos the contestants...lol.
But not as awesome as "cherry light bulb"! LOL gotta love Charles.
I can't believe she matched 2 celebrities with "Glass"!!! What a random answer! I would've said "bowling ball" - and matched nobody..... lol
I would've said "Magic 8 Ball"
I love this show so much because of Charles and Brett.
This show is GREAT.
Where can I get some of that orange wall to wall carpet?
+ManInTheBigHat : 1974.
Well, first, get a wall-to-wall carpet. If you can't get one that's orange, then you buy enough orange spray paint...!
😂😂😂😂😂
I noticed a difference in Genes appearance/hair, and then the ladies said how good he looked with his hair like that!
"We'll be on the cover of Ebony yet!"
Instead of a Crystal ball...a bowling ball?
Today the best answer probably would have been "Magic 8-Ball".
I would have said “Bowling Ball”
Thank you! I can't believe I had to scroll down so low to find this comment. The Magic 8 ball was invented sometime around 1946. It was turned into a toy after Mattel bought it in the 50's. Good times, these. the 70's ere a gret decade to be a child in.
I think Charles couldn't think of an answer so he just perposly chose a random answer that he knew didn't make sense/was crap to try and gets some laughs.
Match Game 74 was on daytime television as far as I can remember
The 70's is strong with this one.
I kept waiting for one of them to say "She stared into a Magic 8 ball".
darkwood777 3 years ago
she gazed into a meatball lol
I liked Richard looking up at Charles, "Cherry?"
+elvicare35 : Yeah, WTF was _that_ about? Charles was notorious for coming up with bizarre answers that are extremely unlikely to match. (Patty Deutsch also had that tendency.)
Yeah, Patty Deutsch didn't give a shit about matching, she just wanted the laughs.
@ anton: Yeah....kind of arrogant and selfish, if you ask me. Blow the contestant's chances for a win just to show everybody how delightfully creative and offbeat you are. :-\
Captain Quirk That was mostly Brett.
@@ultmswag3170: Nah, that was Patty all the way. Brett didn't always give the best answers, but at least she tried.
THE EXACT DATE
...WTF??.??
A meatball...Madame Lazonga is Italian.
"Marble" was the first answer that came to my mind.
Brendan Richards

Bowling ball
From the 1974 season of Match Game (during the CBS version), this is a funny "I said CHERRY" moment. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
8 ball is the answer
RIP Kaye Stevens, who passed away on December 28, 2011.
Patty gave a bad answer and got TWO MATCHES!!! It went that way sometimes on "Match Game 7*".
best part is at the end "Cherry lightbulb"
It almost got swallowed, but he said "You'll be on the cover of Ebony yet!"
a rubber ball would be the cheapest (discount fortune teller)
Never a bad answer if you get a match or two
"instead of using a crystal ball, she gazes into a _____." Bowling ball would have been my choice.
I loved this panel they always knew how to make fun of themselves
The obvious answer is "aardvark"
Summer, 1974...CBS morning lineup in Houston, TX KHOU-TV..."Here's Lucy" 9AM...Match Game 9:30...Price Is Right 10AM...Young and Restless 11AM
Thank you, Gene. Lightbulb is the right answer.
I loved Kaye Stevens on the show. She was a ball of fire and was having a blast.
I thought the perfect answer would have been bowling ball, but clearly not.
BOWLING BALL, DAMMIT!!!
The audience groaned at the contestant's answer, but in all actuality, she got as many points (?) as she could because two matches was the most she could have gotten.
"Cherry" ?
CNR must have had an "Off day". He's a lot funnier than this
John Lang I sure laughed out loud when he said that!
"CHER-RY!! CHER-RY!! CHER-RY!!"
"DYYYNOMIIITTE!!!!"
That last woman wrote in glass after the fact.
She gazes into a BOWLING ball.
We look much older in person... LOL
Jimmie Walker was from "Good Times."
You can definitely tell that this episode happened after "dinner," when Brett looked like she was struggling to stand up after she got buzzed and didn't look like she knew where she was pointing... lol.
Gene probably wasn't wrong though. She probably could've taken on the entire audience and beat 'em!
I said bowling ball
I was thinking bowling ball
Same here
+Mark Gray : Yep, so was I.
Bowling Ball
+Tommie Bell : *EXACTLY.* I can't believe nobody said that.
+Captain Quirk bowling ball isn't clear. Glasses would have been great.
+Ryan Schroer : True, a bowling ball isn't clear, but that's part of the
joke. Madame Lazonga is a _really discount_ fortune teller!

Snowglobe!
Same here!
that is a good one
i like how richard said; cherry? like it was the craziest answer he heard that day. and maybe it was.
Kay Stevens and Lynda Day George were so hot in the 70's !!! Want 'em both !!!
find thee a 2nd hand time machine on ebay....
I said Bowling Ball as well
Brett drunk again.
I would have said "a tennis ball."
Charles Nelson Reilly is my hero
I thought about "a marble" since it's much smaller than a crystal ball.
BOWLING BALL
@ivegotalongdong
She was mainly a singer/entertainer. Worked on Broadway as well I believe. She had a good voice she just sang really strange numbers.
Alright Richard. "..... Cherry?"
definitive answer is bowling ball
Jimmie J.J. Walker is still living,(clapping) DY-NO-MITE!
How the hell did I get into these old game show videos...
I thought Bowling Ball
My Guy was the Late Gene Rayburn!
Jimmy Walker is awesome! Wish this was the whole episode.
Bowling Ball!
charles is SMOKING!!
You know what I would have said..... and it's not cherry.... it's a ping pong ball.
3:09 Maybe Charles meant a part of a woman's body that could not be said on TV in the 1970s!
txvoltaire I think so 😂😂😂
Lynda is soo pretty
My answer would have been a "glass ball." Since "glass marble" wasn't a match, my answer wouldn't match "glass" either.
I would've said bowling ball
no all the panelists were given vodka
bowling ball
I would've said Orange lol
The answer is snow globe.
Bowling Ball.

Richard and I thought alike!
No,"sorry but you are wrong". I didn't make this up. Search here on youtube for Match Game on Entertainment tonight. Listen to the interviews. They did drink. (They don't say Richard did, I'll give you that).
Charles got his toupee back!! ;)
A mirror was my answer
@Andresouza23 Best I could tell, it was "Swanee River".
MEATBALL!!!!
I know what you mean about the PC stuff but actually on this show some of them were actually drunk. (watch some Match Game interviews)
Bowling Ball would have been the Best Answer....
Why Was It So Different back then I mean the world has gotten so bad yet no one like,...I don't know its just so bad now it's all about s.## and drinking when back then it was better I mean mabey people should try to make it be like back then....?
First thing I thought of was glass - I have no Idea why It was booed - And you gotta wonder what Charles has In that pipe
Gene (the host) is HAMMERED in this clip. Notice that in the beginning when he begins leave the panel from talking with Brett & Charles, he bounces of the set, and pours himself back over to the contestants.
Agreed
Gene didn’t drink due to a medical condition. I thinks it rude to accuse someone of something like that unless you were there. SMH
