I can definitely relate with my first few weeks of game design back in college! This feels like a blast from the past for me. Just know that not knowing anything is the first step to knowing something. Love to see the game come out, whether it's art or concepts. By the way, I'd suggest going into other engines that advertise minimal coding such as Game Maker and Godot to waist the headache of learning C#. Unity's still a good choice though for beginners.

Hi Den, I'm not in any way a programer but I studied a little about the issue (I can relate with many of your problems except cat alergies) and I have a couple of recomendations:
First and the main one: start with an easy project; one of the most common issues is to start trying to program the videogame of your dreams just to find out it's way more complicated than, let's say create a videogame where you have to run away from a zombie from point a to point b, and if that by any chance can fit into a bigger game you will be able to make gigantic progress latter.
Second one: divide your work, in the video you started developing the game, but programers barely do any graphic design nor the other way around. It's amasing all the sprites you made for the game, and to be fair, I can see you as a pro sprite designer for videogames, however; if it's time for programing I would recomend using boxes with the name of what you are moving or the zombie that is following you to save time and focus only in the mechanics you want to implement, it's only after you are happy with the mechanical result that you may add all the sprites you made to see your fully funtional videogame.
BTW: don't just trash the good sprites if the project is not what you wanted, normally in development you will want to have a library of old designs sprites, even the "not liked" parts programed, so if you ever need some of them into a new project you will have those resourses at hand... or in a folder you forgot it existed until the next time you started thinking into making a game.
A final recomendation that works for me: try to make the game first as a board game, I know it's not the same but having it phisicaly and moving the characters, NPCs, enemies and everything with your hands, following rules and interacting each other, will give you a better insight of what you want to make, and better yet, how to code it. For me, code is the rules that govern everything in the game.
I hope those recomendations can help you and anyone else who also tryed to program a videogame.

  • @KingdomTerrahearts
    @KingdomTerrahearts 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Several things that I want to say:
1_Misspelling "vertical" and spending hours trying to figure out why code doesn't work is very common even among professional programmers
2_Your progress was actually really good, especially for someone teaching themselves (I would know, that's how I learned myself)
3_You probably could have used premade stuff first to make it easier to just see how far you can go with coding, but I get that you are an artist and want to have your art there first and then see it move and not have lots of default characters or blank squares doing stuff that doesn't look pleasing

    • @KingdomTerrahearts
      @KingdomTerrahearts 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also, for this game I would recommend game maker since it's a 2d game and game maker is easier to use and has a lot of tools to make development easier for less experienced (and even more experienced) game developers, and switching over shouldn't be that big a deal

As an aspiring game dev, myself. This is a fine idea, I've been on my grind for close to half a year now, still bumping to roadblocks and shit. Still, it's a fun, albeit tiring ride... I do not recommend you to start with a very complicated project with 10+ systems onboard. Start with two or three things, then when you think you've got the hand of those, try and see if you still have space for another two--if not, then stick to the minimum you have. Better to accomplish something with all that effort, rather than putting it on hold and letting it go to waste.

As a level designer I can agree making a game can be overwhelming. It takes time and remember games are hard and doing the work is a start. It looks great, maybe some polish and there are some channels that go over from start the kind of game you want to make. Also make a gdd It will save you time and headache. And there's a key timeline to use. A) focus on the core mechanics of the game, b) polish them and add some other stuff you have time for and c) finalize the mechanics and if there's any time left test out everything you have made.

Just some dev tips regarding making the process easier in the long run. Make 3 default assets that you can use as placeholders, a main character, an enemy and a box.
Main Character: To test movement, actions etc.
    Enemy: Battle Feedback, AI
Box: This one will probably be used the most for essentially testing events, object placements, mapping out layout for stages etc.
From there, focus on learning coding and putting down easy to copy code that can also be used a ton throughout the game, do a simple structure with the default assets,. Reason for this is so that you can test the code, once the code works and you've fixed the structure of all the events and systems, then you start making assets for the whole game.
I know it's easy to fall into the asset making trap because you want the game to look pretty, but having to think of how to make assets on top of learning all the coding, just gets overwhelming, ultimately pushing you to burn out or procrastinate a ton TwT

As someone who did exactly this, it's not an easy task at all for a beginner to learn and research for himself. Your typing skills have to be on point, your logistics have to be sound, your ability to query for problem solutions must be top notch, and the further along you get in the project the more complicated the interactions which means you have to be absolutely sure to organize it correctly. Any little issue with the organization of your project and you spend a couple of weeks looking for one single bug that completely wrecks your whole game if you are not careful (ask me how I know lol). Something as simple as a missing character can screw up the whole process. Breaking up your code into bite sized chunks controlling single types of objects and functions is a must as your project gets larger and larger so best to start early. I can't tell you how much time organization saved me from scrapping sketchy shit that somehow cohesively worked together. I want to eventually get back to the project that started it all for me, but honestly I've been to lazy to pull it back up. It's not just you. Designing and programming a game takes a lot out of you if you don't pace yourself.

For pixelated player sprites, I recommend that script that turns a 3D model into 2D pixelated sprites, giving you the freedom to change only 1 model and not have to redo 8 sprites every single time you want to change something. (i forgot what it's called, tho)

Now, I know less about games than you, but from what I've heard, the first step for any game is figuring out what a minimum viable product is and working on it. That is, the minimum required for you to be able to have your game work. For instance, the minimum viable product for the original super mario bros would be a sprite that could run left and right and jump. And then you build from there.

You honestly made it further than me when I made my first game. I didn’t lock one of the rotations, so every time the character would walk they’d just keep flipping

Thank you for still posting this despite not finishing the challenge, it really makes me feel a lot better about how overwhelmed I get trying to learn to make a game. I've been trying, watching tutorials to figure out what is going on.... but sometimes it really is just a lot. When all you see are success stories, sometimes it makes me feel like I am falling behind, or it isn't meant to be because I am not succeeding how I think I should
So, thank you for still posting this, you've restored by confidence as an aspiring creator

If making video games was easy, a lot more people would be doing it, a lot more of the games out there would actually be good. But it takes a broad collection of skillsets which each are a career path in their own right, skillsets that are almost never all found at a high level in single person. Even the littlest game is almost always a 2-5 person project with a significant timetable, and the particular games that inspired you to want to do this probably took hundreds or thousands of person-hours before they had anything worth showing off. Even with an existing licensed game engine like Unity saving you a lot of the work on building fundamentals, farm sims are incredibly complex under the hood, and so are tower defense games, and so are looter games... and you were kinda hoping to combine all three.
I TA'd a college game programming class in its first semester, it was an upper-level (junior/senior) class for folks with two years of comp sci classes under their belt, and I got a look at the projects being done by some of the students who took it the semester after. Some of the students managed to put together some amazing projects on their own and achieve what could reasonably be considered a saleable game. Others took the entire semester to put together a proof-of-concept, using "placeholder" art. People who'd spent 2-3 years or more learning programming, finding the programming a challenge (though in some cases that can be chalked up to them taking 3-5 other classes at the same time). And while all of these were being started from scratch, with no pre-build game engine to leverage (this was more than 20 years ago), it's still a reminder that even the "small" video game projects are way more complex than most folks realize unless and until they try to make one.
If you do take a shot at this again, I _strongly_ recommend taking on a partner, someone strong and experience on the programming side who needs a talented artist like yourself, who can make everything work but lacks the visual expression skills to make it look good.
Also... A lot of folks who are getting jobs in game development now didn't start out by making games, they started out by making mods and custom modes for existing games. Many of the games that have developer-enabled support for modifications have extensive mod developer communities, and it's a solid way to focus on learning and understanding the logic that goes into things, producing actually-tangible results, without getting stuck in the weeks... and there's tons of folks out there who have made this their main hobby and would love to actively support a new member of their community, you just have to find the forums they hang out in (which is not as hard as it sounds, since they generally _want_ to be found).

I've been working on multiple projects including developing a game on my own. I've gone back and forth through many things such as "Do I want it be 2D or 3D? Do I want it to be simple or complex?" I've come up with a lot of ideas. I'm more of an artist than a programmer. In the past few days I figured out I should focus on creating the level(s) first to get my mindset into the world I've created. That way I can fly or walk around in Blender as if I'm one of the characters. I chose 3D because I wanted players to be able to change their outfits like a Sims game. I use mostly free programs. The only things I spent a lot of money on are Adventure Creator(a plug-in for Unity that helps a lot), it cost $80.00 USD. I don't have a nice enough drawing tablet as the one in the video. I just have an XP-Pen Artist 16 (Gen 2), it was $256.00 USD when I bought it. Right now it's $319.99 on the website. Sometimes I need weeks or months to clear my mind so I can come back to the project in a stable and focused mental state.

In order to create a video game, you start small, make small prototypes that get bigger over time, then try to participate in game jams! You have to make a ton of small projects before making something huge! Trial and error is a huge part of game development, and never goes away. Good luck with your future projects!

tbh, feeling like a walking corpse is what game dev is all about. i think that you are really brave for posting this video even though you didnt finish the game. to be honest, to start making a game on your very own is the hardest thing you can do (either you are a profesional or a beginner) because there are certain things you are better at and certain things you are worse at (no offense but life is just this way unfortunately)
maybe if you ever want to come back to making a game, atleast now you know in what way you have to think and what way computers think (complicated stuff). maybe if you want to learn coding that is REALLY simplified. try scratch (i know its for kids but its a great way to get to know how stuff works without needing to know all the chique shebang). if you ever need help you can react on this comment and ill try to help you as much as im capable of.
once again im very proud of doing such a great job for a first timer ESPECIALLY starting out with C# and not python or scratch.

Video game development is a difficult and stressful job because you have to solve various problems such as coding the code, making animations for your characters or solving bugs and many other things... Sometimes, however, even if you are not able to immediately create something or satisfy a goal you have set, you have to look ahead and try to overcome the difficulties. you don't have to worry if everything doesn't work as it should straight away because mistakes are part of life and you can always improve.

I have a tip as someone who has made at least one game. Try using a program made for making a game like what you want to make. I used RPG Maker XP, very good for making those top down pixel art games, and while it is designed for rpgs, you can alter how it processes your game and make it something more along the lines of what you want. Makes it a lot easier for making maps and characters and junk. I suggest you try it out!

If I'm to be honest, there is no way you would get the game done in 100h. Games, even Indie ones, are the result of hours upon hours of development. The progress you made is still impressive af.

Honestly, I'm happy you released this. It can help others know that... it isn't always easy to keep going on things, and yeah, sometimes you bite off more than you can chew. That doesn't mean you should kill yourself over trying to keep it going, nor does it mean whatever you were aiming to do is impossible. (Unless you're trying to eat the sun... then there are other issues to address)
I'm happy to have seen this as it shows that all the elements of making a game are needed. Your sprite work kicks the noodles out of mine, without any contest, but I am pretty sure I can code a little smoother than you. We aren't better or worse than each other. And when someone like us tries to take on something like building a game, we gain one thing above all else.
Understanding how much the elements of making a video game are tricky to do all by yourself.
    Stay safe and Aloha.
