    In my opinion the Canon 400mm 2.8 II is the best. What a stunning lens, works greatly with the TC1.4 and TC2.0 - especially in combination with a Canon 1DX Mark II.

    Some how I felt 100-400 the best. Easy to handle. Very sharp ! One lens many qualities. Along with this , a prime 85 or 24-105 is enough to cover everything ( almost ). + big savings !!

    This is great. I have a canon 80D and my interests are mainly around (as a hobby) Super macro insect photography and bird photography within say 30 meter distance. I have a physical disability so cant get into the bush easily or particularly close in the case of birds so am looking for a suitable reasonably affordable lens also taking the weight into consideration (I am very weak though I intend to use a light tripod) and also a macro lens where I can get up pretty close but not lie on ground or right up to the flower/insect close, that's suitable for hyper detail images. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

    at 4.13, I paused and gazed the side-by-side comparison for about 5 minutes to find the sharpest one. I don't know it's only my thought or really the 100mm 2.8 macro is sharper than much expensive 70-200 2.8 and even that mighty 200mm f2.
    Also, I'm in wildlife and considering investing in a lens (can afford only one, that too in EMI). Stuck in deciding between 500mm f4 II and 200-400 f4. Gonna use it on a FF (6DII) and an APSC (7DII) alternatively. Shooting from small birds to large mammals, currently with Tamron 150-600 G1. Advices are welcome.

    I have the original 70-200mm F/4L IS and the 2.8L II. I bought the F4 for taking pictures of my son during sports (soccer, baseball) but he then wanted to play hockey. I suffered for years with the F4 at hockey games but 2 years ago I got the F2.8. I agree with the comment about using the F4 where weight is an issue (Disney World's Animal Kingdom, for example).
    What annoys me now is the shift to mirrorless since I also have the 24-105 F4L and the 16-35 F2.8L II.

    Canon has left out a huge gap in the lineup and that is it simply doesn't have a super zoom. Where is the 200-600mm that Sony has? There are many amateur wildlife/bird photographers who will never spend US$13,000 on a 600mm f/4.

    Just reviewed this video. Very informative. One question that needs clarification. If using the 1.4 extender on the 100-400 version 2, i have found it best to shoot in Manual mode due to slow focus in AF, so does the 1.4 extender work best in MF with this lens or not? I might add i am using on a Canon 90d. Thanks for the reply

    Have the 70-200mm 2.8L IS II, my priority is the 300mm 2.8L for several reasons. Non IS version is not outrageously expensive, it's extremely sharp and focuses fast, and coupled to a 2x converter get's to 600mm 5.6.
    But it would be nice to have more telephotos, like the 135mm 2.0L that's really good and discrete or the 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II that's versatile and can focus to 1m.

    I hope Canon soon wakes up and makes a new 400mm-prime below the 2.8, that DO is crazy expensive and the 5.6 is kinda dim and also not sealed.

  • @Rascallucci
    @Rascallucci 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the 70-200mm, most people buy the f/2.8, but before I decided on the f/2.8 vs f/4, I actually went to the local Canon Centre to try them out and to my surprise with both lenses wide open, the f/4 was sharper. I wanted the lens to shoot my dogs outdoor, I ended up going for the f/4 and never looked back. It is massively lighter as well as significantly cheaper. And even when used for shooting running dogs outdoor, f/4 is more than fast enough.
    But, after using the 70-200mm for a while, I felt 200mm simply wasn't enough. I thought about the 100-400mm, but ultimately I really felt Canon left a gaping hole in their product line-up here. While the 100-400mm is great, it is still not quite enough if you need to shoot wildlife namely birds. While I understand a lot of bird folks would use telephoto primes for ultimate sharpness, I never thought that was a realistic option for a non-pro to spend well over US$14K on say a 600mm f/4. So, that begs the question, what super zoom options are there after the 100-400mm? The answer is nothing. That was further highlighted by the numerous offerings by other brands in the market such as the Sigma 150-600mm, 70-600mm, the Tamron 150-600mm, etc. Or if you are a Nikon shooter, there is the 200-500mm or if you are a Sony shooter they have a 200-600mm. Hopefully, in future Canon can look into that focal length for their zoom offerings.

    • @wesleychapman9001
      @wesleychapman9001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      cheaper option to still have fun would be a 70-300mm. On the 80D it wood act more like a 112-480mm (which is quite a lot of zoom!) since the 80D is a crop sensor/ APS-c instead of a full-frame sensor. If you have some more money, the 70-200 f4 is great or if you have even more money to spend the f/2/8 version mark ii is insanely good and versatile.

    Its good to see I'm not the only person who sees the 100mm macro as a great portrait lens. Ive seen so many of these for sale second hand, its a shame people only think of it as a macro lens. They sell it when they no longer have an interest in macro shooting, while failing to see its other strong points.

  • @TheModernMusicsucks

    I prefer using Prime lenses, but am definitely not planning to go beyond 400mm physical focal length. At the moment, I have 4 Canon EF Prime lenses, a 14mm f/2.8 L II USM, a 100mm f/2.8 USM (just ordered a 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM for replacement due to issues with the current one :( ), a 300mm f/4 L IS USM which I do plan to continue using, and a 400mm f/2.8 L IS II USM.
    I want to use the 300mm for anything that is within 2.6 metres, since the 400mm f/2.8 II can only focus to just below 2.7 metres. Both lenses are capable of doing different things, and that is why I am planning to keep the 300mm! :D
    I could have bought a 500mm f/4 L IS II USM for a little bit more than the 400 f/2.8 II, but I personally do not think I need that extra 100mm, in fact the main focus of my upgrade from the 300mm was to have a wider aperture, not a longer focal length. I did think about getting the 300mm f/2.8 L IS II USM but thought that I already have a 300mm, so there would be less point for me to get it, and might as well wait for a 400mm instead. Definitely a decision I do not regret, as I managed to get one used for about ~£4,700.

    • @MaZEEZaM
      @MaZEEZaM 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My point is really that when asking for a recommendation, you really need to explain what you want to take photos of as there is no single lens that is best for all situations. For example, a lens that is suitable for taking long distance photos of birds and other wildlife is not necessarily going to be suitable for super macro photography, this is without even considering any budget constrains you may have.
