    I'm driving a 2015 Forester with the 2.0l engine and cvt (not sold in the US I believe) , I sometimes average 32mpg at the pump when driving very conservatively and not over 60mph. These Subarus are tuned for max efficiency, you just have to take max advantage of their fuel saving features like the immediate fuel cut off during coasting, etc

    Hi Scotty. I was looking closely at the tread direction in your video on the Subaru Forester. I believe the owner has the tires going in the wrong direction. I checked the Michelin website and tirerack and you can see a direction rotation indicator almost directly across from the CrossClimate2 stamping right next to the tire size stamping. Not trying to be critical.....just observant. Great video!

    I've found the eco mode on my work van gets about 1.5mpg less than turning it off. I had to look it up and it adjusts the shift points and engine timing for "better fuel economy" but it just made the engine underpowered and didn't downshift when I needed power to go uphill or pass someone so it was just dumb.

    • @mrichar9
      @mrichar9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      typical green eco scam

    • @tipsy09
      @tipsy09 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah when passing the car works even harder and the fuel economy is worse.
      I bought the new civic touring in December and had eco mode on until two weeks ago and was stuck at 28 mpg. Changed it to normal and it’s up to 33.
      The logical conclusion from what I’ve read seems to be that you need to constantly adjust between eco mode and normal mode based on the type of journey you’re going to take and expected driving.
      Where I drive I’m constantly driving in all sorts of traffic conditions and driving style needs to constantly change. If I’m going to run some errands during down traffic time then eco mode is probably fine. If I’m driving home from work during rush hour then normal mode is probably better. But once I get on the highway and get to cruising speed AND I know there’s not going to be much traffic then maybe eco mode is better. But I dunno if it’s okay to switch to eco mode while you’re driving at 65-70.
      If you’re on the highway but there’s traffic and you’re going to need to pass often then stay in normal mode because passing during eco mode is even worse

    The question at the end... one nice thing about the keyless systems in the newer cars that I found out by accident is that in the case of my Lexus, it makes it harder to accidentally lock your keys in the vehicle. One day I hit the lock button on my door on the way out, and as soon as the door shut the car beeped at me, put my hand on the driver's door and it unlocked and let me get my key fob that I had forgotten in my cup holder. In the old days I would have been SOL.

  • @hotpuppy1
    @hotpuppy1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    If you want better MPG's, drive slower. Cars still get best mileage at 55-60. Regarding A/C, I check the temp of the air coming out of the vents first. Check with recirculation on to get max. as air from outside the car can affect. If the blend doors in the A/C-heater box are bad, it won't be as cold no matter what the gauges say. If there is a valve on the heater core, make sure it actually closes to keep the hot coolant from flowing into the heater. There is a very fine line between having too much refrigerant and too little in these cars today. No more connecting up a can from the auto parts store to dump more in.

    One mechanic once told me to run my car aircon at least twice a week, for at least five minutes time, even in the winter. In the winter, I use the heater AND the aircon together to defog windows very fast! So following this advice, my aircon was still working perfectly when I sold my car (I bought it when it was 5 years old and sold it when it was 16 years old). Car was a Ford Focus 2002, 2.0L Zetec made in Germany.

    I had a 2011 Subaru Outback AWD which was rated 28 MPG HWY, and I would get a little less, about 26 MPG. Now I have a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe AWD Which is only rated at 27 MGP HWY, but I get over 30 MPG on the highway all the time. A lot happier with the Santa Fe. Both were 4 cylinders.

    Your comments about tuning the AC for use in the East vs the West USA reminded me of my grandmother, who was one of the people who taught me to drive when I was a kid in the 1970s. I remember asking her if the MAX setting on the AC used more fuel, and she said it probably makes no difference in gas mileage. She said the MAX setting was for driving in the eastern US. She traveled a lot, and I guess she had realized (as I did a few years later driving across the Mohave) that the MAX setting really helps lower the dew point, and thus the humidity. Because MAX recirculates the air inside the car, it has the effect of super-drying the air. That’s fine in the East, where humidity always comes with the heat, but it can be terribly uncomfortable to your skin in a dry climate like you see in the West.

    Am having to actually replace my compressor on my 2010 Civic DX coupe because it's leaking a fair amount. But it's got over 220,000 miles. It's overall in very good shape but that's how it is. At least the mileage we're putting on it isn't going to be as high as the last 4 years (put 70K in 4 years but we moved and that won't be case anymore). PITA to replace the thing though.

    Also use the correct refrigerant. Not 134a. That stuff sucks, but it is patented, same deal with the new stuff. Use a blend of butane and propane. Many companies make it to right specs to match R12. Less pressure is needed to liquify it.

    If you go 62 1/2 miles per when they came out with the epa figures for miles per it’s based off of the old law of 55-60 not these higher speeds after you pass 62 1/2 on all cars it will lower your miles per gallon and use twice as much if you go. 75 so if you go 300 miles you will get there an hour early but you will eat 12-13 gallons instead of 6-7

NOTE : after the factory tires which were yokohama's wore right out.. I got good years at Walmart and they wore out fast too! .. since I've been buying Cooper tires which have been fantastic 👍.. they have a great tread designed for the snow.. and they last a good long time.. even with all-wheel drive driving all the wheels all the time

    For some reason those Subaru flat 4 and 6 cylinder engine's valves clack like this one does. I wonder if it's just a case of inadequate lubrication. There's just not enough oil getting to the top of the engine.
    The good thing about most American cars over the years is that the A/C was often ice cold. The bad thing about most Japanese cars especially in the 70s and into the 80s was the A/C was just not strong enough. They've gotten better over the years but at one time they weren't.

    The fuel economy ratings are done with a standard profile. They are useful for comparing two vehicles, but not for predicting actual fuel economy in situations which differ from the test profile. The highway test averages 48 mph and never goes above 60.

    I drive a 2017 Jeep GC Hemi and drive only 10-20 miles a typical day, with maybe a longer trip of 50-60 miles once a week. I get 12-14 mpg. New Jeep GC 4XE and I can drive all electric 6/7 days. But still can tow a boat to the lake 150 miles away. I think this would work for me. If I buy now I get the tax rebate. Though prices are high with inflation I doubt they will ever be less. So PHEV makes perfect sense for me. The confusion about mpg and mpge assumes you charge every night and only drive so many miles every day. Everyone’s case is different. If I drove 60 miles a day or more it may not make sense.
