Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds th-cam.com/users/postUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . A great comment but people, since before Rome, would do all the same things. Most people want civilization and the free perks that come with it. Most will stay in their comfort zone of ignorance and debt. You don't need to do it the way this guy did it. Me and my family did this but we also have a 3000 sq ft house. What's the difference? The amount of people, the income, the education, and especially, the means. We are debt free. We stay that way by keeping a board with 'needs', 'wants' and 'silly' written on it. We do three 'needs' before we look at a 'want'. We do three 'wants' before we do a 'silly'. We have friends in the same pay bracket that think we make so much money. We don't. Not in comparison. We do have patience. We have planning. Most of our friends just go and buy what they want in the moment that they want it. We never do that. I actually start to sweat when we are on the edge of making a impulse buy. We don't make impulse buys. To illustrate how well we keep to this rule: My wife just set up her new bed from a friend. Yep, that's right. We both sleep in separate beds because we don't have the money for the king we want. How don't we have the money? We are waiting for the king that we want to go down to the price of a twin. It has happened before. It will happen again. Planning. it's all in planning. Another example. We didn't have couches or seats in the home we built for a year. Why? I ain't paying out the ass because I need it now. We waited for the sale to come round again. We saved $2000 on a set of leather.

Y’all have done a great job. The house looks wonderful and I love the wood walls also. Off grid means that your home isn’t connected to public paid utilities, not that you totally reject technology. Some people-trolls- get their kicks from trying to make others miserable. Just delete stupid comments and don’t let them get to you. You’ve already won because they’ll never have and accomplish what you and your wife already have. God bless your family.

12:00 For water lines use Pex, if the water freezes, inside the pex lines will not bust.
To prevent water lines from freezing, put copper lines around the wood stove or close to the stove. Use a very small circulating pump, on a timer to heat the water.
OR move all water lines inside the living space, Not under the house.
Thank You for ALL the HELP.

Love it. We bought a 16X40 barn cabin and are totally off the grid. We have solar power and the cabin is wired for the solar all the way through we do run the A/C on the generator in the summer and also have an outside shower with the portable water tanks on propane. We use Buddy L heaters during the winter along with the fire place. We are planning on adding on a big back porch that will connect to the bathroom that we are going to have built. You guys are doing great. Hang in there. The kids are talking about moving out here now or atleast getting things ready so if things get bad in the city. We are way off the grid you would not find us unless you knew where we are and had been here before. Has I always say we have lions, tigers and bears. LOL! We also have a Rottie named Thunder and a blue healer named Sadie they let us know if anything is around. God bless and stay safe.

Thank you EVERYONE for your amazing supportive comments!
To answer a few of the most common questions, yes there is a big gap around the front door lol. This was filmed right as the frost was coming out of the ground, and being on a block foundation means the house shifts quite a bit. I adjust that door a couple times a year as a result. We do have a heat trace in the main water line and the building was skirted with plywood followed by 2" styrofoam and tuct tape at the seams. Then we covered it in 36" of straw all around and burried it with snow. Unfortunately we couldnt keep the underside from freezing. This year the floor will be insulated with 3" of closed cell spray foam and we will bury the water main 4 feet deeper and place foam over the line before backfilling. The exposed section of pipe between the ground and house will be in an insulated box with a halogen bulb on a thermostat inside.
Inside the house was never too cold and the kids were fine upstairs. Over night the coldest the upstairs ever got was maybe 18 degrees celsius, it was just the craw space under the house that we couldn't keep warm when the weather got brutal.
That should make this year a lot easier...stay tuned to find out! Thanks for watching and supporting my channel!

My wife and I have this exact building but in 14 x 40 from Premier Portable Buildings. We have been living in ours since just before Thanksgiving of 2017. Our interior layout is exactly the same as this. Master bedroom is by the back door and it's 12' x 13'6", small bathroom with shower, sink toilet and washer and dryer which is 8' X 8', there is a hallway that is about 4'x8' and the rest is the kitchen. We do not have a living room as the kitchen is the heart of the house but we may add one on once we get this one paid off. I love having the 6' X 13'6" front porch. We closed ours off over the winter with Ultraply mahogany underlayment and used it as an extension of the house and for storage of a few extra things as well as giving the outside cats a safe haven from coyotes and a warm place to sleep out of the wind. The ultraply is down now and it's a regular front porch again with the exception of a 3.1 Cu Ft Galanz refrigerator that sits outside next to the front door filled with bottled water and Gatorade for guests that want to sit out on the porch with us and socialize.

Good job! We did the same in the high desert about 17 years ago. This will teach you what you really ‘need’. As well as learning many things about yourself and development of patience and character. It’s much more than just building a house. It’s an experience that would help anyone willing to try it.

YT just put this video in my feed. You folks have done an excellent job for the budget.
Building 6" walls with good insulation was extremely prudent. -45 is damned cold. Electric strip heaters on the water supply line and then heavily insulated might fit inside a power budget to keep the water line from freezing. The entire system from the well into the house would need to be REALLY well insulated.
45 minutes to drive for Wifi. Awesome. Ham radio can be your friend. HF radios for long nights.
I agree with your thoughts on down-lights. They can be very harsh. The wood looks really nice and warm. My grandparent's cabin had the same and I love it. Wall sconces might be nice, but also table lamps were what we used.
    Best of luck to you!

If folks don't want to drive 45 mins to mom's for wifi... On our family farm we are 100% disconnected by land. Wind, solar, septic, plus Homebiogas provides us with hot running water all year (turbine in the nearby river too), alas, we have internet via satellite and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to reduce their carbon footprint while keeping some of the "connection". 😊

The comments about "off grid" are typically because people over analyze the term. If you tell me you're off grid, I assume you mean that you don't have public utilities ran to your house. I think others take "off-grid" to mean that you're supposed to be hiding out in the middle of nowhere and staying away from people.
Screw 'em. Most sane people know what you mean and dont take issue with it.

Those that criticize are they doing what you're doing? I don't know? But I do know it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks you are getting to live your lives the way you choose. Not by other people's checklist of what is what, and What needs to be what. You didn't come here to live by someone else's expectations. I applaud you!

I appreciate how well thought out you move off grid was. So many of the people who do this are taking the plunge without measuring how deep the pond is. Your home is beautiful. Just a thought, having a 55 gallon container in the house for snow storage to provide a ready source of water might be a bonus. When I lived in the north, I had one equipped with a spigot and a potable water safe hose for those times my water froze. It kept the people, and animals hydrated and clean. Best of luck.
