Apart from being one of the greatest singers of all time, he was an actor, lyricist, composer, writer, director and producer at different times. It was "Aradhana" which changed the entire landscape of Hindi cinema but the signs were evident a little earlier. Kishore's rendition in Guide, Jewel Thief, Duniya, Mahal, Padosan, Mr. X in Bombay, Khamoshi etc. were sublime and are hummed even today. Aradhana hit Indian cinema like a tidal wave. It catapulted an unknown actor from obscurity to superstardom. Rajesh Khanna generated mass hysteria which at that time was comparable to Elvis Presley and the Beatles. In less than a year's time Kishore Kumar would waltz past Mohammed Rafi to become India's no 1 singer, an exalted position he would hold till his death in Oct 1987. Rafi was undoubtedly India's greatest singer till that point of time and was the emperor of all that he surveyed. There were other extraordinary singers including Mukesh, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Bhupendra and others. All of them were at the peak of their prowess when Kishore overtook them to become the unchallenged king. Rafi did make a comeback in 1977 but it was still not good enough to dethrone Kishore. Like millions of others I was lucky to grow up in an era where you could listen to these innumerable timeless classics of Rafi, Lata, Asha, Suman Kalyanpur, Mukesh, Manna Dey and of course Kishore. Those days will never come back.
