    Listening to you talk about the degree of control California agencies have to exert on people reminds me why I moved to Idaho eight years ago. I lived just north of Sacramento for sixty years and finally couldn't deal with it anymore. Never have been sorry I left, even though there are a lot of good people there.

    The good old days I used to work for a Matlack tank lines in the 80s fleet Mack’s And freightliners that’s when you had a real trucks and real drivers no crybabies. Thanks, Warren.

    Hello, Warren. I worked building Freightliner cabovers in 1971. One of the first things we learned was always to check what was in the cab before lifting it - stuff left loose in the cab would fall forward and break something, sometimes even the windshield. Also, the dangling licence plate holder in front of the cab would sometimes hang up on the bumper and get bent all out of shape. When putting the cab back down, you had to make sure the clutch linkage was engaged properly, or you could have a truck that could not disengage the clutch.
    Most trucks went out equipped with 350 horsepower GM 8-71s or Cummins inline 6s, some went out with 903 cubic inch Cummins V8s or GM 12-71s. A few went out with 500-horsepower CAT inline 6s, but the CATs did not have Jake brakes. The GMs were said to need an inframe rebuild after about 300,00 to 350,000 miles, and the Cummins could last to 400,000 to 450,000 miles before an inframe, since the engine oil available was not yet improved to allow million-mile engine durability.

      That is what I was told about the CAT engines by the guys at the plant. These engines were big motha inlines, but not overly tall since they had no Jake heads on them. I assume they were from CAT bulldozers or earth-moving machinery, but I was not told anything else about what machinery they came from. I was told that they had a rather ineffective retarder system that threw engine oil against a flywheel, and that there was no Jake or Pacbrake system available for them at the time. The trucks with GM or Cummins engines went out with Jake brakes installed, and almost all with Roadranger transmissions. A few (very few) went out with some other sort of manual transmission installed, and a few went out with air conditioning. I was surprised that trucks would be ordered with fancy paint jobs or extra chrome but not with air conditioning. @@timcanizares5240

    3:11 yeah, when I seen that headache rack so close to the cab I remember those jam points on the locks. Good times.😂. I also recall about 50% of those pumps with leak like a siv so you had to pump them like you stole them until the locks kicked in. I was so grateful when they finally came up with an air over hydraulic pump for those units.

    Pumping that cab up would be a good alternative to the gym for your wife lol. I've heard you saying she likes to go to the gym, and have told her she should come work with you and she'll get a workout, this immediately came to mind. Thanks for the video, and you are right about that electric truck bs, but they also want people in general crammed in a city using public transportation, a train, but mainly walking. They'd like us in a smartass city for control. G-d bless.

    That Freightliner brings back a lot of memories. First time i watched someone jack up a cab a two quart Stanley thermos rolled off the bed and broke both sides of the windshield.
    I didn't like driving them because it felt like the left steer axle shock absorber was mounted to the bottom of the drivers seat. I wasn't thrilled with the notion of being the first person to an accident either. Best Wishes to You and Your Family for the Holiday Season Warren. Thanks for sharing.

    A lot of us really appreciate you making these videos, Warren. They are incredibly informative and vicarious. When I was younger, I operated equipment, and turned wrenches, but with nothing like your experience. If one has never worked on equipment, especially big heavy dangerous equipment, one has no idea the strength, energy, tenacity, and resourcefulness required. You rock.

    We all have to suffer because California has an ingrown toenail. Always had a anti smoke fitting plumbed into tank when BC 4 was in shop. Sad to see the junk that is replacing these old work horses. Thanks again for sharing Warren.

    Supposedly the next couple years in California the biggest motor you can get is a 13 litre. Without paying some 20,000 dollars fine. You’re 100% right, just to suck more money outa people. Glad I ordered another 16 liter a few months ago.

    Another Great Video, Warren. Those Old Cabover Trucks were pretty cool and all over, now they are highly sought after and bring big money. The only electric truck I would own is an Edison Motors truck, still qualifies as electric, but has a diesel generator. They seem to be a great group of guys behind the company and make common sense. I appreciate the videos and the common sense rants. California is getting rid of some good old reliable trucks, you couldn’t pay me enough to go all electric for a service vehicle. Electric may be a good idea but the battery technology is not there yet. The infrastructure that is needed to make that move is also nowhere near ready. Leave it to Government to mess up a wet dream.     I have a 71 cab over and the jack would leak down faster than I could pump it up, tried to fix the pump and resealed the cylinders still had trouble finally bought an aftermarket pump and put on it works great now

    See Warren you just taught me something, using a laser temp gauge is brilliant. I'm not afraid to admit I don't know everything. I learned on this channel period, can't wait till you put up a new one. FLD parts will fit those old cabovers usually.

      Well, it's really a passive IR temp gauge. The laser is just to help you aim, it has nothing to do with measuring the temperature.

    First thing you do before you jack up a cabover is check the cab for shit that will go through the windshield. Then you can jack it up.
    My first truck was 72 freightliner cabover with 8v 71 318 with a 13 speed and 44.4 rears big bunk. 22 years old, and I was in tall cotton. 69 now man alot has changed.
    I had Cummins 444 with the step timing control. I always set the overhead like the old big cam 1 engine. Never had any problems and was running coast to coast.

    Always amazed me how better they would run after a top tune , I can't remember which engine it was maybe NTC350 you gently pried down the injector to empty it of fuel before setting it with the inch pound torque wrench. At least with the COE nice easy access on all cylinders. Always check what's in the cab first before tilting and what's in front of it once it goes over center. Cheers.

    Rode in one of these trucks in 1978 from LA to Phoenix in August. Hot miserable bumpy ride pulling a set of doubles through the California/Arizona desert. Temps in the hot time of day was about 120 with afternoon thunderstorms to cool the place down to around 95. The truck ran fantastic the entire way even the trip back to LA. I think it was a road ranger trans 18 speed. It was super hot in the cab during the heat of the day, I removed my shirt and pants and drenched myself with a canteen of water to get some relief. It had 260 air, 2 windows down at 60 mph.

    Yep...jus like my old '74 Chevy Titan with a 335 Cummins and a 13 speed.
    I tore it down and put head gaskets, injectors, and a thermostat in it once....learned a lot about protectin them injector tips. 🙄
    Wuz a good old truck with a differential lock which wuz right handy.
    It made a few trips up your way haulin drill pipe.
    Don't see too many of em anymore.
    Anyway Warren, we wanna see that smoke gone and see it haul that hay. 😁

    if trouble with "inner base circle " pull out your inch pounder and work outter base circle . that makes certain the plunger is fully DOWN as these injector have no Poppet to close end of injection , just pintle at or near fill bottom

    Those blower motor switches are still available from Freightliner, although the typical parts guy probably can't figure out how to look them up. I just replaced one in my FLC last year, same switch that cabover uses. That old iron is good stuff, it just works. Cheaper to pay the ticket for running it into Cali than to buy a brand new truck you can't keep on the road.

    On some of the freightliner trucks the air system has to have pressure before the air comes out of the vents in dash I have run in a bunch of them that way when I am fixing air conditioning systems and will air system messing around with the bad air dryer it may not maintain the right pressure. I was taught with the big cam 855 Cummins to set the valves just like any other 4 stroke diesel engine on number 1 TDC you can set half of the valves and then turn a full turn to number 6 TDC and set the other half and then go thru and set the injectors exactly like you did I had a big cam 4 non STC industrial engine that sounded and smoked like that truck and I put new injectors and I had to hunt around to find a old Cummins diesel mechanic and he came and showed me his method and it just purred nice when I was done and it went from 20 gallons of fuel per hour down to 16 under full load it was in a John Deere self propelled corn chopper and with 8 rows of corn going thru it was all it could handle set at 400 horsepower.     I remember these I started in a 64 and 65 with 318 Detroits in them. Also saw several jucked up in the back row of the truck stop and the driver and the lot lizards rolled out on the windshield 😂😂

    I have a small cam Cummins used in a 250kw generator with 1300 hours. It was installed in a tv transmitter for CBS in 1968. Spent entire life in climate controlled environment. Never had a cold start is anybody interested in the engine and or generator. It resides in Pennsylvania .

Years ago I talked to a cab over driver and he loved the cab over and the only thing he wasn’t fond of was that if he were in a head on or any collision involving the front end the idea of literally being the first one to the scene of the accident didn’t really appeal to him.😊

    Hello Warren. I used to live out in the stick's and when I retired I had to move in to town. I keep a low profile and I keep out of the way of people. Otherwise they tell you what you can and can't do. I hate having live in town. It's because of being a diabetic and having bad legs. If it wasn't for my condition. I would be out of the town tomorrow. I don't know why people can't leave me alone.

    I completely agree, it is all about control man. You aren’t free to do whatever you want, you must obey big brother is watching you. We are only as free as they want us to be. Thanks for the video, I’m working on my 1980 Freightliner Cab Over and unfortunately my front drive axel has some milky gear oil and slight metallic residue in towards the bottom of the fluid, been sitting for awhile so hopefully everything is okay in there, going to run some good fluid in it and go from there. Do you know if the meritor rears need limited slip additive with the gear oil by chance? I was told I have hard to find parts type of rears being the 10 smaller bolt axels 😞

    Maybe cover the turbo outlet, and the after cooler air inlet. Ounce of prevention is a pound of cure.
