Whatever they say about R.Waters, he's a lyric genius. And his work with Pink Floyd, as the rest of them, is something far above everything they could do as individuals.
He makes you work for the meaning doesn't he? R.W. is like you come to me if you want to know what it means. But the coolest thing about great lyricists is that they have put aside "rock star" and be a relatable person when they go to work.
The amazing thing about Pink Floyd is when you start comparing them to other bands and it just can't be done. Everything they touched was magical.

There are only a few bands that challenged and changed the norms of music like Pink. One off the top of my head is The Band. There's nothing like 70's rock, it's pretty much all that I listen to especially when cruising in my Plymouth Scamp.

Actually, this song is about alienation, isolation and giving up challenge for comfort. The song on this album about their former bandmate Syd Barrett (who did suffer a mental breakdown from a combination of schizophrenia and LSD) is Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
Oh, and what you thought was a slide guitar was actually David Gilmour singing (or scatting) along with his guitar. Also, what you thought were trumpets was actually Richard Wright on synthesized keyboards.
Yes, this song is about those things but it is also about Syd. It's being sung directly to him-he's the "you" in Wish You Were Here.
Well we don't know what his mental health is. As much as appreciate Roger Waters and his work and tribute to his childhood friend, Barrett, and, indeed, he mentioned schizophrenia, it's HIS point of view. Barrett had a mental breakdown for sure, but the extent about why or how, and how far, we didn't know.
He reached the secret too soon for sure, but I think it's far more complex than that, and even Waters give some clues with several songs (Have a Cigar being one): the music BUSINESS might not have pleased him (same thing happened to Kurt Cobain)... Syd was an artist, and wanted to to art, not "business", he might have been broken by the "instant fame" he had, being some kind of "guru" for people around him, some flatmates supposedly pour LSD in his tea on a daily basis, so he was even a puppet from his close followers. Beside, LSD is not potent if you take it everyday: tolerance rises greatly, so I think it's not the only thing, although, for sure, it might have some impact on his perceived world.
Anyway, we don't know about his real diagnostic, schizophrenia is just an hypothesis. My take is that he also became recluse because he started to "hate the world", becoming more and more misanthropic. It's what I feel about him.

@@gryndyl Not true, the main song in this album that is entirely about syd is shine on you crazy diamond (that opens and closes the album with part 1 and 2 respectively). This song is also, in some way, about syd, but definitively he's not the main theme. the "you" in "wish u were here" refers to roger waters himself, who wrote the song
Syd listened to an album by two old blues musicians from North Carolina. He was so taken by the raw bluesy sound that he talked the rest of the band into changing the bands name to reflect their sound. PINK Anderson and FLOYD Council. At first they called themselves "The Pink Floyd Sound". Eventually just "Pink Floyd". They are the cerebral band of rock!

I love this reaction because it’s like we can see exactly when the song grabbed you. You were enjoying the instrumental and making some casual observations…and then you went about 30 seconds where it almost looked like you forgot where you were. Great reaction with lots of interesting comments.
The last time the 4 remaining members played as Pink Floyd was at the live 8 concert, and with their deep catalog and only doing 4 songs, this was one of them.
Of course they killed it, and it's worth a look if you haven't watched the 20 minute set. It's on TH-cam.

This is a great song, it absolutely speaks volumes to me. With everyone I've lost over the decades, especially my sweet Michelle, it's comforting in a strange way. Cherish those close to you, it may seem as if they will always be here, but that's never guaranteed.

Pink Floyd is amazing
You can't help for your heart to not go out to Syd. He had mental health issues, then started to have substance abuse which led to more mental problems like a vicious cycle. This song is really open to interpretation, IMHO. So many times, I've listened to it, and it gave me a different vibe and meaning. In the guitar solo, David Gilmour is actually singing along with his guitar. You can see that in the video of the Pulse concert.
Syd Barrett wrote or co-wrote a lot of the early songs, including an early hit of theirs which is really mind-blowing called, see Emily play. And then after he got kicked out of the band he released a double acoustic album called the madcap laughs. Which is chock-full of just amazing Little Gems.

Picture just after ww2 ended in England.
A British veteran has returned to what is left of his home town. He is sitting on the edge of his cot in what appears to be a small bedroom or maybe a one room apartment . On a desk next to the bed is a military type broadcast radio receiver .
The 30 something man reaches over and turns on the power and within a couple of seconds voices begin to drift from the speaker . The veteran reaches back to the radio again and begins to slowly turn the dial hearing more voices and music fade in and out as he slowly turns the tuning knob and stops on the intro guitar part you first hear . Removing a cigarette from his mouth he places it on an ashtray next to the radio before reaching out of screen to pick up an acoustic guitar and he begins to play.....
There is a video out I have seen that shows the very scene .

The very beginning of the song, where that AM radio sounding quality, is reminiscent of how we, young Rock & Roll bands did back in the day in the 1960s. We would listen to AM radio, (that's all we had att), and try to figure out the chords to the songs and play along if we could.
That's what Pink Floyd is saying here with this opening of the song, it's about them doing exactly that, especially Syd Barrett. The "trying to play along" part is illustrated as the second acoustic guitar that comes in with so much sound quality, like we're in the room with the guitar. That's Barrett and /or Gilmour playing along with what was the AM radio sounding first acoustic guitar, trying to figure out the chords!
Every time I hear this song opening, I recall doing the same thing, listening to AM radio, trying to figure out the chords to our favorite songs to play in our bands! LOL!
PF's first album, (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn), are all Syd Barrett songs.
"Arnold Layne" was a hit single for them. About a man who steals women's clothing from laundry lines and wears them.
"Astronomy Domine"- psychedelic rock.
"The Gnome"- Quirky English romantic fairy-tale (?) music.
"Bike"- Zany humorous song
I agree with you on both their lyrics and musical structures. Their lyrics are very introspective and thus they remain relevant not just to their generation but to all generations. Their musical structures are always relevant to the given message thus strengthening it.
A good Syd song to do is his last with Floyd, called Jugband Blues. It includes a video of him singing it. It's one of my favorite Syd songs and Pink Floyd songs!

Syd pretty much killed himself on LSD. No, he didn't quit breathing, for another 30 years, but as the band said, "Now there's a look in your eyes; Like black holes in the sky". The engine's running, but nobody's at the wheel.
Did you know that the title, Shine on You crazy Diamond, spells SYD?.
The first time I heard a radio/tv show playing in the background of a song was with The Beatles' "I am the Walrus". Pink Floyd embraced and mastered it.

Syd WROTE and SANG ALL the songs on Pink Floyd's very first album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" It was his voice and guitar on it all the songs. He ever wrote and sang the very first single before that "Arnold Layne" David Gilmour was not in the band at that time. David was Syd's Replacment.

It was actually Syd who brought David into the band, there was a short period where they were both in the band together. Syd and David were friends, and after his drink was spiked and caused him to spiral further succumbing to mental illness. There were time during live performances Syd would stand on stage and not play a note, so the band in support of Syd discussed hire a guitarist to cover for Syd's issues. Syd recommended David and the rest as they say is history. However at Dave's request the band still paid Syd his share of royalties until his death as the while band still considered Syd as part of the band, not many bands would or have ever done that.
You do such a good job. I really appreciate that you do your homework and actually try to educate your audience rather than play dumb and expect your audience to educate by "writing in the comments." It shows respect for the musicians.
Astronomy Domine would by a song by Syd Barrett that was played quite often in recent years by David Gilmour in his concerts and also by Pink Floyd while touring in the 90th.
And David had them playing that intentionally so that on those live album releases that included the song it would boost the royalty money Syd was getting. Respect.
The sound you hear is his voice harmonizing with the guitar as he plays.

Pink Floyd's first album and first singles all came out in 1967, and Syd Barrett left in early 1968, so there isn't a lot of Pink Floyd music with him on it. In some respects it's very different from what the band became in the 1970s, but in certain aspects you can see the connection. You could check out See Emily Play (their second single), Interstellar Overdrive (an early instrumental on their first album), or Bike (an early use of sound effects on their first album).
David Gilmour knew Syd Barrett from their teenage years when they played guitar together. Syd went to university and formed Pink Floyd with Roger, Nick, and Rick, while David tried to achieve success with the band Jokers Wild. That didn't work out, so when Syd's condition started to affect the band, they brought in David so he could play Syd's parts live. They hoped to keep Syd as part of the band as a songwriter, but after a couple months it became clear that wasn't going to work. The whole period between 1968 to 1972 is full of fascinating pieces of music as the band tried to figure out what kind of music they wanted to make without Syd leading the band anymore.

For Sid Barat you need to go back to around 1967 era this is before Pink Floyd went progressive except it was, in the pop music sense. I don’t think anyone else sounded like them.

The sound of the guitar on the solos is a "regular" solo played on an acoustic guitar, the effect you percieved as a slide (the "glass" thing you mentioned) is David's voice mimicking the sound of the notes played (or he is miicking his voice on the guitar maybe...)
Pink Floyd recorded no filler, no songs that were "product." Not a one.

Every time my husband hears this song it reminds him of his dad. The line about trading a walk on part in the war. For a lead role in a cage. While he may not have had a lead role in a cage. He did fight in Korea. He got captured. Then spent 27 months 17 days in a Chinese POW camp. He went in weighing 180 pounds. He got out weighing 82 pounds. And according to my mother-in -law he spent several months in solitary confinement. His first child was born when he was there. She wss two the first time they met.
I squeezed all the lyrics to this onto a postcard to a lovely Australian girl I'd spent a year working with. Never had the courage to tell her how much I fucking missed her, face to face.

The beginning is tuned into a short wave radio program and that whine-eeeeeeeeee high pitch sound prevalent on that signal and the guitar sounds off as if it is coming from that short wave program and then the second guitar comes into realty as if it is a real guitar right in front of you ..Pink Floyd has the best trippy nuances ,,..
The 'slide' is actually a falsetto vocal - if you find the video performance, you'll see it live. :)
Dark Side is #1, but Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall are also intended to be "experienced" as a whole... They are "musical movies", journeys into sounds and lyrics.
I highly recommend to listen to all from start to finish, because otherwise you miss a LOT.
Syd kinda took a trip that he never came back from. If you want to check out Syd songs as a member of Pink Floyd Piper's at the Gates of Dawn is where to listen. Syd did make a couple albums after Floyd that is well let's say they are very interesting.
"See Emily Play" is a beautiful Syd Barrett song.
This is one of my favorite songs. I'm sure I'd heard it innumerable times but, the first time I heard it after the love of my life left me, it was gut wrenching. Years later, it fills me with melancholy rather than pain.

Hi Millie, no it's not a slide guitar, what you are hearing is yhe remarkable sound of David Gilmour harmonising with his own guitar, check out the live performance from Pulse to see this phenomena in action. They only had one big single hit was the band concentrated od albums and album sales, they were never really a radio friendly hit single type of band.
Look at their first album "Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn". It's actually quite different from where Pink Floyd ended up sounding like.

My favorite band , Barrett was awesome! The majority of Pink Floyd songs where SIDS , he was a genius and LCD is what destroyed his life but I will always remember his work!

I'd recommend you start Astronomy Domine, the first song from Piper at the Gates. I think it's a better introduction to the band than Arnold Layne, the first single.

All of the band members have so many degrees phd astronomy and so many things that they are probably the most educated people in 1 band.
the guitar solo wasn't a slide, David sang the guitar line as he played it making it sound ethereal. BTW Syd showed up at the studio as they were recording this, and they didn't recognise him
They were fairly young for their lyrics. I always thought of them as having "old souls" for their ages.
Great reaction and incite on Pink Floyd's style. In reality, this album was a bit later on in the development of the band and their earlier albums were far more experimental and less traditional. I absolutely love A Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, and Meddle, which are all amazing listening experiences I recommend highly.

My older brother was a few months from being called up when they ended it. It was a genuine choice that everyone had to make. You could choose to be drafted. Or you could sit in prison until the war ended. Walk on part in a war. Lead role in a cage.
i recommend listening to david gilmour's self titled first solo album. it's full of great songs he had written in the 70s,but never got on pink floyd albums because roger waters was so in charge after the dark side of the moon became a monster hit. roger's solo albums are amazing too,but require a lot of attention since they're all concept works.
Nearly all songs on Pink Floyd's 1st LP were written by Syd Barrett. That LP remains my favorite Pink Floyd album. I would suggest Syd Barrett's "Dark Globe" ... a song from one of his 2 solo LPs from 1970.

The overall consensus is that, although the song was inspired by the situation regarding Syd Barrett, it’s not directly about him. The deeper meaning is that the song is generally about a sense of loss and people’s inability to engage with reality.

Funny story about this song.
I was being put in my "hazmat" suit in the hospital waiting for my Baby Girl to be born, and the head nurse asked me what my favorite band was that I would like to be played during the delivery. I dismissed it and said Pink Floyd in a fleeting moment because they are my favorite band. I mean, I was barely paying attention because they actually came to get my woman for a C-Section. That said, they eventually placed me in a completely empty waiting room. When they did finally come to get me the guy told me in no uncertain terms that they were initially gonna just let me sit there, but because the cord was wrapped around Her neck there was a chance She would die so they wanted to give me a chance to see Her. When I got inside, the doctor already had my Girl cut open and they were pulling BabyTimes out and this song was playing. It was crazy and surreal and everything else that comes with it
So the lyrics don't really match, but the Wish You Were Here most definitely does.

Listening to the Floyd from Syds' era is VERY different to their later work. Very psychedelic I love Astronomy Domine and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun. The are quite long though. A fun one though is Bike short, weird and great!
I first heard this at 14, struggling with depression and feeling ostracized. It hit me so hard I nearly lost it. To me it's about me and my dad. And it was also about me and my culture. And probably about me and God. That's the best kind of songwriting.
David Gilmour has a voice and guitar that touches your soul.
The songs by Pink Floyd were usually considered too long, complex and deep for standard pop music airplay. In my youth I had to search for them on late night or bootleg FM album rock stations.

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Guns n Roses and a few others... those bands you can't just "listen" to their music, you enjoy the experience and many of their songs have deeper meaning than just being "cool tunes" which is what makes them epic bands

If you want to listen to a Syd Barret song try 'Bike' from his only solo album 'The Madcap Laughs'. If you want to hear Pink Floyd performing a Syd Barret song try 'Arnold Layne' or 'See Emily Play' (which were 'hit' singles). These songs are extremely whimsical, with hints of hallucinations lurking just out of mind.
You should check out the entire 1994 Pulse live concert, the 2019 Remastered version, I believe you will love it for sure, Pink Floyd will stand the test of time forever more !!
