  • Here's what it was like for me to get back on a snowboard after 27 years away from the sport! Scary, but fun!
    I used to BE a snowboarder. I worked at a ski shop and spent nearly every non work hour in the mountains in Alaska for several years. Life happened, I quit boarding in 1995, and then moved to Ohio in 2008. I never gave skiing or boarding another serious thought until a few years ago. After skiing several times the last few seasons, mostly at Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, I decided to give snowboarding a try again. I survived.
    Shot on Insta360 One X2 - amzn.to/46dsI6A
    Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick - amzn.to/48FbyjA
    Recorded with DJI Wireless Mic - These things are fantastic. This was my first time using them and I didn't have my setup dialed in at all. They only get better! - amzn.to/3RKqmYn
    Just so you know, these are Amazon affiliate links, which means if you click on one and make a purchase I'll earn a little money which will help me to be able to make more videos. Oh, it will make me smile too! Best thing is that it costs you nothing at all.

    Hey buddy, glad to have you back on board! Snowboard instructor here, I guess you're planning to go more often now, so he're few tips:
    Try to avoid counter rotation, always start a turn by initiating it with your front shoulder rotating into it. Lower yourself a bit without poking the bum out, it helps you avoiding to lose control bc of bumps etc. amd you will need it for proper carved turns later on. Speaking of carving: Lift you're edges way more while turning, even on skidded turns to avoid catching an edges. A lower body position helps alot here as well. Many greetings from Germany, unfortunately I made it onto by board only once last winter, because of my studies in forestry.

    Huge respect from New Hampsha'! 😎👊
    You're giving me flashbacks of a couple years ago. My snowboard
    "journey" was interrupted for 20 years with raising a family. I got
    back to it a few years ago at the young age of 55. Here I am at 58
    loving it even more than when I started. And you are correct, the
    body does not bounce or heal as well as it used to, don't ask me
    how I know that. 🤦🏻‍♂
    I appreciate you sharing your return to an amazing winter sport.
    Keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤🏂

      I'm on some pretty old equipment at the moment for the most part, especially boards. Even the early 2000's to mid 2010's stuff I have is WAY ahead of the 80's and 90's gear I rode back then. I'm kicking around the idea of splurging for a more modern board for this winter.

    Similar experiences from here too. I had 20 years break (life, kids, etc.) and came back at age of 43 some 4 years ago. I fell in love with snowboarding all over again and it's actually my winter passion now. I've learned lots of new skills also (180's, butters, deep carving, etc.) and I'm already better rider than I was in my 20's. Age is no obstacle as long as you're still more or less physically fit for the slopes. This season's goal is to manage 360's without breaking any bones 😄

  • @duartebriz
    @duartebriz ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think you are ready to got to the rockies! 😀
    I also been away from the mountains for a long time: 15 years. I stopped in 2005 and in 2020, with 49 years old, I went snowboarding. It was so awesome that now I want to snowboard until I die. I'm sad that I didn't document it so well on video.
    I think that this is the kind of thing you don't forget how to do.
    Thanks for sharing this video.👍

    perfect north bought the slope i started at "timberline" in wv. i was like you i went a lot when younger. started back up in 2019/2020 after about 18 years. now i go about 4 or 5 times a season since. best choice ever. put your foot behind your board to skte next time! i cant believe they dont have pull down bars on that lift

    • @MaynardsMidlifeCrisis
      @MaynardsMidlifeCrisis  ปีที่แล้ว

      I started boarding in '86 best I can remember. I don't remember anyone skating with foot behind, now everyone seems to. I tried, it just feels awful to me! As a matter of fact, my first fall came at a lift trying to skate that way, I tripped over my rear binding and down I went!

    With all due respect, but the vertical feet is not 800' but, it's half that, 400'. The top of the hill sits at 800' and the base at 400'. Unfortunately our hills in Ohio do not match up with WV.

      I think I took it out of the edit, but I had talked a bit about how amazing muscle memory is. I was shocked at how quickly the fundamentals returned, even being older, heaver and out of shape-ier. I might do a follow-up this season now that I have 6-8 days of riding in and I can dial up the aggression somewhat.
