Hi Gary. Recently got myself a flash and whilst im struggling a bit in working out how to use it, i have already had some great results. The other evening i got my children to jump off the table onto a pile of pillows while i was lying on the floor beneath them shooting upwards. Got some great images. The flash really does freeze movement. Cheers again mate!
Simple explanations for complex concepts. Great job Gary. Too many people show us the how but not the why. You need both to be effective. Looking forward to the next installments.
Very timely video. Enjoying this as I'm sitting here, going through today's photo-haul. Spent a couple hours doing some water drop macro. 2-second exposures in the pitch black kitchen, flash popping off left and right. Caught a couple of nice collisions... Luckily the wife and kid are already asleep, so no glasses were broken!
Thanks Gary, really useful vlog. I finally got round to watching it as I've just got my flash out of it's box for the first time in around a year as I never really understoood what it did, and how - but now I do. All I need now is a "Glamorous Assistant" to drop a ball in a glass - and not to break it!
Great vid. I thought I knew most of what you said but always have to stop and think!!!! I have never heard it explained like this and it made perfect sense. Cheers Would love to hear you explain High Speed Sync. Have you done one?
fantastic explanation Gary! It all makes sense, especially why under these conditions your max. flash sync speed is enough to freeze action like you showed at the end.
Thank you so much for this video it was so helpful! Just to clarify, so I just have to remove every bit of ambient light possible and as long as my shutter speed is at the flashes sync speed or slower the shot will be frozen?
Thanks for that Gary, really well explained and demonstrated. I am just getting into off camera flash photography so some more programmes like this would be good..eventually I would like to get some nice moody/creative shots of my daughter using flash..cheers Gary and all the best ....Martin..
Well that was interesting 🤔. Although it is advisable not to use your best crystal glasses for this activity to avoid any disappointment. Thanks for sharing again Gary . Staying home staying safe.
This has given me some indication of how to use flash but I will have to watch it a couple more times so that it goes in.Out of curiositie how do you find your cameras flash sync speed as this bit confused me
In it's simplest form, most cameras have a flash sync speed of 1/200 or 1/250 shutter speed. The cameras manual should have the info or you can Google your camera model or you can "shoot" some images at different shutter speeds until you find the FASTEST shutter speed that has the entire image showing on your LCD screen. Once you have the FASTEST shutter speed you can "shoot" at that speed or any speed slower than that (depending on the ambient light present and the effect you are trying for). The above info DOESN'T apply with HSS (high sync speed). HHS, if your camera allows it, makes it possible to "shoot" at shutter speeds faster than the cameras "normal" sync speed. Hope this makes sense.
Great video Gary I’ve learnt something new as never really messed about with flash photography 👍 How many intact glasses were left in the cupboard behind you at the end of the video 😉👍
Hi Gary that’s probably the most uncomplicated tutorial on flash and what it does I’ve looked at thank you, I’ve just bought a Godox TT 680 to learn how to do water droplets, do you advise it is better to use manual settings over TTL ? And am I right in assuming the camera flash settings have to be in manual mode for my Godox X1 trigger ? Thanks Paul
Hi Gary - I've seen your great video a few times and now I get it ! The sentence with "as longs as the flash is the dominent light source" .... however - how do I actually measure that ? ... and another thing. Recently I used my flash outdoors and wanted to freeze some kids in the fast movements when running in the forest - they were 5-8 meters from me - 1/200 F4.0 and ISO1000 (it was a cluody day) - and the Profoto flash on 4 - as I assumed that the lower power setting the faster the flash duration would be and, therefore freeze everything - but it didn't .... sigh ! Am I up against the inverse square law here or in other words - how do I freeze movements 5-8 meters from me and still preserve the ambient light in the background so that doesn't go completely dark ?
Hi, I need bit help with my flash, sometimes off camera flash when fires it wont show in the picture. And above 200/s even if it is 8000/s,it continue to work with 200/s until I set HSS ( I mean my picture its not cover half ore more by a curtain) Its not a good communication with my camera 5D mk ii? or because of my flash is MK 600 ? It has to do with the reason not use it for quiet some time? Thank you for your time
@@GaryGough Can I do something to my off camera flash not to pause in 2 minutes? its difficult when its in the soft box and I have to set my model for 2_3 minutes? I have to restart it from its light button!! Thank you
Gary I love your videos and photography However on this occasion I understood absolutely nothing. It's not your fault as I've been using a Nikon D600 for about 3 weeks.
Amazing video and the only one on yt explaining actual basics. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome! 👍👍
It’s been a while since I’ve learned so much from a video, and I only had to watch it through once to understand. Thank you sir!
After years of confusion I understand it at last. Gary you are a great teacher. Thank you heaps.
Brilliant video again, Gary. A great explanation of something I’ve never got my head around. 👍👌
💡⬅️this just appeared above my head. I don’t own a flash but now it is on my wish list.
First useful explanation I ever got on that subject.
You are a first class explainer! I’ll look forward to more. Thank you.
Great teaching - thank you and greetings from Germany
Many thanks!
Your explanations are the best Garry.

By far away the best flash expanation! Waiting for more of your videos!
Thank you
Perfectly explained. Thanks!!
Thank you
Good fun video. Loved the section at the end.

This is soo cool!
If it wasn't for this lockdown and you being inside, I might never have learned this today. Thank you !
I want to see the breaking glass image!
Me too, let’s see the broken glass shot

Hello Gary, excellent educational video. Lots of good information that I will revisit so I can put it to good use. Thanks and stay safe 😷
Love the excitement and enthusiasm Gary and a great explanation of flash syncing
Definitely my weakest area of photography, enjoyed that and looking forward the next instalment.

Thanks a lot for this tutorial. Very useful for a speedlite flash newbie like me...
A bit harsh Dad! well done and thanks to your assistant, Del
Absolutely fascinating.
Cheers Andrew 👍👍
A clear understanding - great video. Looking forward to the next video.
Excellent explanation of sync speed, but I'm going to have to watch it a few more time to understand the second bit !
Very interesting topic! Thanks!
Thanks for this video. I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos and I look forward to them. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this so well.
This was a great explanation. I had no idea and was something I've been trying to get my head around. Thanks👍
Great vid. I thought I knew most of what you said but always have to stop and think!!!! I have never heard it explained like this and it made perfect sense. Cheers Would love to hear you explain High Speed Sync. Have you done one?
brilliant gary, that was a brilliant demonstration and I think I got the gist of it. Just love the sound of breaking glass LOL
fantastic explanation Gary! It all makes sense, especially why under these conditions your max. flash sync speed is enough to freeze action like you showed at the end.
Best tutorial I’ve watched for a long time thanks

omg the last part makes me laugh a lot!! Great tutorial about flash Gary
Brilliant Gary, love your explanation hadn't thought about flash acting as shutter speed
Great information for those of us learning to use our cameras in better ways.
Cheers Gary I was thinking about doing this in the garage. I will give it a good go. Let's see the breaking glass image
Another great vid Gary - thanks!
Great video Gary,
Hope it wasn't the best crystal glass.
Great tutorials as always.
Thanks for that Gary, really well explained and demonstrated. I am just getting into off camera flash photography so some more programmes like this would be good..eventually I would like to get some nice moody/creative shots of my daughter using flash..cheers Gary and all the best ....Martin..
Very informative , keep them coming please
Great explanation. Thanks. Use Flash only for macro.....only learned how by bumbling along trial and error. Will be tuning in to next one.
Clear explanation ...
Thank you
Haha, great video Gary, learnt a lot from it !! Can use it for my macro fotography !
Well that was interesting 🤔. Although it is advisable not to use your best crystal glasses for this activity to avoid any disappointment.
Thanks for sharing again Gary .
Staying home staying safe.
You're not only funny, you're smart!
Thanks for that Gary, really useful stuff. The camera manuals don't really give you such concise instructions. Do you need any more old wine glasses?
Nice video Gary, never used a flash before definitely learnt alot form it. Will have to make one my next purchase and retry my water balloon shots 👍
This is really interesting Gary. Gonna have to give this a go later, minus the broken glass of course 🤣👍

Love the laugh and honesty Gary, most vlogs would have left that bit out, would this also work on a black background?
Amazing video.
Great video Gary I’ve learnt something new as never really messed about with flash photography 👍 How many intact glasses were left in the cupboard behind you at the end of the video 😉👍
Well explained Gary ..... the penny finally dropped!! Is there going to be a follow up to show how you get the splash shots
I'll try Gordon. I was going to create quite a few videos but somebody upset me. I'm all good now though :)

That was great Gary very well explained, and you gave us a good laugh hope it wasn't lead crystal!!
Awesome Gary. What metering do you use?
You make a great tutor Gary, but what a waste of red wine!!

Hi Gina, If you switch your flash on, your camera will be restriced to 1/200 sec unless you switch your flash to HSS.

Great Vlog Gary, My brain Hurts lol
👍👍
Gary I love your videos and photography
However on this occasion I understood absolutely nothing.
It's not your fault as I've been using a Nikon D600 for about 3 weeks.
Leave us hanging.... gotta show us what happened at the very end!
One less glass or alcohol consumption then Gary.
Hope you cleaned up before the wife found out 🤣
She was the one that smashed the glass :)
Gary Gough haha i thought it was one of your kids lol
Brilliant!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
