    After doing a study of over 500k Samoans, anthropologists have identified a gene in their DNA that explains why Samoans can grow so big or are more prone to obesity. They say this gene takes food and instead of being able to burn it off easily as the average person could do, it turns everything to fat that is harder to burn off for Samoans than the average person. It is believed that ancient Samoan voyager lifestyle evolved this gene due to not just the long travels but also settling into new islands with scarce food. Their bodies needed to hold on to whatever food they took in. Nowadays, with fast food and sugars in practically everything we eat (even "healthy" food), this advantageous gene is no longer working for us.

    You'll be surprised our ancestors are 2 meters taller then we are nowadays. Why, because when we were digging on the ground and found old bones of people who died in the influenza back in day. We Samoan thinks all this as well. Compare the height of a door, that's how tall Samoan were back in the days.

    Thing is the only part of the genetics involved would be the big boned structure of a Polynesian. The obesity part would be the individual. Polynesian ppl was once described as tall, well built, kind mannered , soft spoken brown skinned people. Somewhere down the line when introduced to television, Caucasian culture, let alone American culture Polynesian people really lost their sense of health awareness. They changed the way they eat n start eating excessively on a vast scale.

    I'm Samoan. Back in the day, guys in school that looked like they listened to Metallica or Nirvana were my type, and Native Americans looked like the Palagi boys in the vid, did go out with some poly girls, and they were big. Where I resides in Utah they dig Samoan and Tongans big or small. My skater, rock, goth friends kinda called us tropic babes, lol.. Well, as I mentioned these were all in my days back in the late 90's. But yeah, no stereo typing, it was all about what we had in common. I was the only Samoan/Poly girl with 90% palagi, Native Amarican of different cliques that were very close friends of that type of group, and I loved it. Still, being my Samoan self with heavily different taste in music and clothes, I'm still a big Samoan loving life of all people. This vid was fun btw 😆 And what that teacher said... on point 💯💯💯

  • @jamiirali1
    @jamiirali1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    the brother at 8:09 asked about the asian eyes some samoans have...my marshall islander ex girlfriend had them but poly/melan/micronesian people arent asian but linguistically they are related to the austreo/ malay languages present in indonesia malaysia and the philippines...they are thought to have left the southeast asian regions long ago and branched out to new zealand and further into the south pacific..so maybe they may have been proto malays which genetically accounts for the asian eye factors that pop up every now and then but the similar clothing and tatoos amongst pacific islanders and indo/ malay/ filipinos are astonishing...they all wear the traditional sarong and the doubling of the last name as in lapu lapu..lucay lucay from the philippines and the doubling of many polynesian names are very similar..my filipina friend refers to herself as an islander rather than asian even though she is clearly not the pacific islander type...whether the similarities are indicative of indo/malay and pacific islanders being very distant relatives the one thing i learned from them all while iving in california and visiting southeast asia is that if you have respect they treat you like family and are more than generous...they are just giving by nature...good people good vibes .

    The truth is this. The ancient Lumerians were giants. The Polynesians are descendants of the Lumerians. Ancient Lumeria was at one time the largest continent and connected all the islands from New Zealand all the way up to Hawaii and expanded across most of the Pacific Ocean. Samoans are so big because of genetics and Taro has alot more starch content than potatoes. This mixed with fish and hard work they did everyday to survive. Not only are the very big but they are very strong people even the woman. Even though they are more likely to become obese and get diabetes than most other races, if they live healthy you will see a lot of them will look like Dwayne Johnson.

    Definitely genetics plus our island food diets, which contains alot of carbs and fatty acids. Its not a bad thing, we just need to eat it in moderation and portion control. Food/feasts are a big part of our culture and the way we are as people, its how we bond with loved ones and express our hospitality to those around us. Palagis spend thousands of dollars on gym fees and protein supplements to gain our thickness, we must be proud of our "bigness"!

  • @Sinalove1
    @Sinalove1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you think Samoans are big, you should see the Tongans! Good question though, but a lot of it is genetics - Polynesians have the heaviest bone density of any race, we also have more muscle mass, and latest genetics have discovered that we have a 'fat gene' which was useful for long voyages at sea or times of bad crop, but what makes even heavier and bigger today is bad western food that our bodies are not used to, so we are basically over eating and over storing food. You can have a Samoan that looks same size as a European, but the Samoan will be heavier in weight because muscle and bones are heavier. Hope that helps.

    polynesians are big because we live on a small island and so must work constantly maintaining our food supply via vegetable plantations fishing and building and repairing homes all with a tool that was also a weapon as well, the diet of fresh food in the past contributed to what has developed into the pysical shape we have. constant work, fresh as seafood and vegetables. i think any race that works hard all day every day will slowly increase their phsical appearance through each generation

  • @manamaori3510
    @manamaori3510 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lol all these answers as to why Samoans are big ain’t even true lol...I think the best people to ask are Historians or bio physicist.Tongans,Fijians,Cook Islanders,Rarotongans,Samoans were and in most cases still are tropical people?Dietry mostly comprised of seafoods and certain tropical fruits and veggies.If anything they all only just recently became beefed...If you travel to their home lands or should I say islands you’ll see most of them are lean not obese or big,If anything Maori were historically bigger in stature according to European explorers.because of the colder climates of New Zealand.Our diet was harsh because New Zealand or Aotearoa was of course a bird colony.... which may have been the reason for cannibalism.But in any case Maori were traditionally big as I mentioned because of the colder climate.It was a necessary adaptation to their environment.

      Anthony Sefo true but Samoans have just a presence about them. When they walk into a room. People notice. I think a lot of it is also their big personalities that go with there large frames. I first noticed it when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton. The city that borders the base Oceanside has a very large Samoan population(home to Junior Seau). Now I live in San Diego and if I'm at the Pacific Islander festival I feel small compared to some of these folks. I find them truly fascinating. Their music, their food, their pride. It's something special. Just my opinion though.

    Any race especially Hispanics can get really big, you see the older generation of Hispanics that are short but it's because they can access good food but their sons and daughters born in the u.s grow taller and stronger. I'm Hispanic my dad is 5'7" but I'm 6'4" and my brother is 6'8" we eat a lot of meat, milk, corn eggs and vitamin supplements since we were little
