Old Religion of Samoa (Old Samoa, John B. Stair) | Polynesian Myth | Samoan Gods

  • This is a reading from Old Samoa or Flotsam and Jetsam from the Pacific by Reverend John B. Stair. This was probably written in the late 1800's and then published some time in the 1908's. This source is not an accurate picture of traditional religion as the author was bias against native spiritual practices but also did not witness them firsthand as they were already going extinct by the time he arrived. However it does provide some truthful information but how much is probably up for debate.

Thanks for taking the time to make this, and for the disclaimer in the description 🙏
Old books like this are valuable but as you point out it’s important to remember that mistakes and ignorance will be wrapped up along with the valuable info about our past culture and practices, due to the negative attitude many of the writers had towards our “heathen” ancestors.

From a Christian perspective, our ancestors were heathens. Anything non-Christian is heathen. And now that many Samoans are Christians, we tend to have this same “negative attitude” towards heathens.

Not at all, your not the only ones ,there many who talked and Worshipped God, before Christianity,
God gave every poeple their culture and God lives among them, obedience to God's laws and culture rules,
I believe befor paganism and Abrahamic religions, poeple of many cultures knew God in different names,
My tribes AGIKUYU CULTURES of kenya, believed in God and even today we do the same and we practice our culture and its rules, and God's laws looks similar to our ancient culture rules,
Have been going through other poeple culture and hearing they had main God ,
Somehow poeple Abrahamic religions confused poeple, just wonder to what end,
I think now most poeple are living Abrahamic religions because they feel their no foundations to the believe,
Since i started learning my tribe culture, i understand God's word more because it sync with my culture 🙏

@@myguns85 There are Nifoloa all over Samoa. Yes usually the guardian spirits for the High Ali'i Matai's, and, sacred places. Every village that had one would paint its home usually a rock, or, tree white to warn people to stay away. No playing around and letting balls hit the marked tree, or, rock because that's a good way to piss off a Nifoloa.
My Unko went to Falealupo Savaii. Peed on the wrong tree, and, got bitten. They pulled three teeth out his foot.
One day he was heading back to Samoa to a healer all the way DC to Samoa. He went to lunch with my family as he's a High Ranking Matai of my mom's siblings.
They took him to the airport at SFO for his connecting flight to Samoa, and, parked to helped him. My cousin walked out her car, and, it was covered with flies.
She's blood related to Telesa so wasn't afraid. But she knew it wasn't happy he was going to a Tauala Aitu.
Just being honest. Most of our too afraid to speak of these things. I'm from Alega Tutuila..... my village is full of them. We co-exist through mutual respect. Ask an old Samoan person about Va Feiloa'i... translation respecting boundaries between our world, and, the spirit world.

I was very interested to find this piece on Samoan belief systems pre European. But disappointingly, I found the commentary or narration hard to listen to as the annunciation of the Samoan language is so woefully inaccurate.
If you're going to present an historical account of another cultures history, it would be far more respectful and appropriate to engage someone of that culture to narrate it.
There are ideological concepts in Samoan ancient belief systems that the writer/s have conceptualized from a European perspective, which if you are wanting your audience to be educated and enlightened as to what pre European - pre christian beliefs our people held, then maybe you should have consulted Samoans who are schooled and knowledgeable in its ancient history.
Also, the illustrations you've used to tell your story and portray our history I found childish and condescending.

Malo lava, this is a text book that was part of my Pacific History 101 at University decades ago. I feel slightly indignant since I have a University Student Loan to repay for the cherished books I had read as University text books over three decades ago now. I had spent my student loan on text books worth thousands. But here we are in google world and TH-cam where everything is FREELY available to the laity. Reverend Stair was a good source. It is good to rekindle my undergraduate years at University once again....this time in audio form. This generation are so privileged when we had to live with the burden of having student loans to still repay to Government for the intellectual treasures that are now readily available. I just wanted to point out that Tagalo Le Tūlī or also called Tagaloa Sāvali is the Daughter of Tagaloa this is why when women get tattooed we also have the markings of Le Tūlīʻs foot prints tattooed on us... europeans often twisted the original genders of our gods. Ive seen it also in 1 book where they turned all the Taupou into men....
The paths where the spirits travel is called PĀSOPOIA or PĀLAʻASIA people of the villages know where they are and when you pass by these paths absolute silence is the rule...
Tamafaigā was an evil high chief and rapist he was killed for trying to rape a Taupou from the village of FASITOʻOTAI....
Malietoa Vaiinupo used this slaying to gain power and LIED that Nāfanua predicted christianity and lied that she told his grandfather that the Malietoa will get his crown from heaven, NĀFANUAS own descendents have confirmed that Malietoa lied!
Also Malietoa Vaiinupō (Medicinal concotion drank at nighttime) was called this because he would drink the blood of slain warriors at night time....
Killing/harm/raping of Women, Children, and Elderly is STRICTLY against Sāmoan culture they are called TINIFŪ, tho sadly many did not follow this sacred rule of war and slayed many women and children especially Malietoa Vaiinupō who had women and children burned alive in the Tītō

Look up Auckland Star Newspaper from the 18th -mid 19th century, you'll find articles in there about the wars, our people being exiled from their own island, etc. We have to look deeper into these types of videos, take the facts such as names and dates and search the REAL story...NOT the palagi's interpretation of what happened. There is land to the eastward, & here is a red star, Hoku Ula [Aldebaran] to guide us, & the land is there in the direction of those big stars which resemble a bird (e kapa mai nei me he manu la);’ & the red star, situated in the lap of the goats (i ka poli o na kao) was called Makalii after the navigator's name… So they steered straight onward & arrived at the easternmost island (ka moku hikina loa). They went ashore & found the country fertile & pleasant, filled with awa, coconut trees, etc., & Hawaii-loa, the chief, called that island after his own name… & the second was named after his oldest son (Maui). These two islands were then uninhabited…. Hawaii-loa & his followers were the first inhabitants…. They had left their wives & children at home; therefore, they returned to fetch them.”

      Navigators of Egypt
      (Descendants of Ephraim)
      Legend of Māui & Rātā
      Māui:
      - Te Ika a Māui
As legends would have it, many centuries before the great migration to Aotearoa,, two brothers [Descendants of Ephraim] decided to voyage from their homeland of Egypt. As far as stories go, the brothers [after circumnavigating more than half the globe] would find themselves upon the uninhabited Islands of Hawaii. One of the brothers [supposedly ashamed to return home] opted to stay & settle within the islands naming one in particular,, after himself. The brother, not being satisfied by the fish abound,, decided to find fish further abroad. By using nothing other than the blood from his nose as bait, cast his hook deep within the murky depth. Upon the realisation he was not landing a fish but instead fishing a land, reeled the great fish in naming it also after himself,, Te Ika ā Māui...
      Rātā:
      - The Enchanted Tree
The brother who did decide to return to his homeland, suffered a few complications of his own. Determined to return to his homeland, he decided to fashion himself a sea worthy vessel capable of offering,, safe passage. Upon selecting a tree of such capability, he began his works. At days end, he had fell & hewn a great tree,, where he than retired from all labour. The next day, to much amazement,, the tree had returned to it’s original position & once again standing upright. So, he immediately,, repeated the process & laboured with the passing of another day. When the third day dawned & again, the tree was upright & back to it’s original form. & again the brother repeated the process, but this time he decided to see,, who had undone all his work. To much surprise, the brother noticed all the Forrest birds, insects & wild life, labour to restore the tree to it’s former prestige. Upon hearing their incantations, the brother sprang from hiding & spoke to the children of Tane Mahuta, so it is you,, who restore my tree. In which, the children of Tane Mahuta replied,, who hath given you authority to fell the Forrest God to the ground. When the brother had heard this, he was quite & overcome with shame. The offspring of Tane all called out aloud to him saying, return to the village,, for we shall make a canoe for you. & thus, it was so...

Yet now Samoans are Christian’s and Mormons. Why not favor the religion of the ancestors?. Makes no sense to let Europeans indoctrinate Polynesians into their preferred religion. Take it back to the roots. Don’t get lost in another peoples religion when it’s been inside all along…

Unfortunately colonisation has led to Christianity which has closed the minds of many Samoans

Where did the Gods go?They lost energy & become weak for they need human energy to live. When men expand their minds they create higher energy that is less chaotic & more stablized. The lower chaotic energies cannot stay together & fade.

@alamai7799 they are God's. You can limit them to just what you understand. God can play a role on earth and then go back to his heavenly abode when he chooses.

Just because you don’t know, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. It is a fact that Samoa had their own god (Tagaloa) before Christianty arrived in 1830. Now I know where my family name Taula in Ta’u, Manu’a came from.

Its all true. This is an a.i voice reading from a diary written in the 1800s. I forget the name of the diary but this is all common info. Have you not heard of kramer?
The pictures are a.i generated, its an ai interpretation of samoans, just some random computer art to go along with the story. Its unrelated
