Steve's early 80's Eyewitness albums had a profound effect on how I play music, between his spacious chording and smart economical leads. Just as much I became a huge Anthony Jackson fan because of those albums. Steve has indeed had a very rich creative life.
Easily my favorite guitarist; we are similar in age and both grew up in Los Angeles, so we share many similar life experiences. This conversation revealed Steve to be a very intelligent and emotionally sensitive human, both of these qualities are very much needed in the insane world we live in today. Thank you for sharing this important video, it brought back many wonderful memories that will never be forgotten.

The stories about his father Sammy Cahn are great. He may not like hearing this but my favorite Steve Kahn guitar solos are on Steely Dan’s “Goucho” album, especially on the song “My Rival.” His playing on “Glamour Profession” is also notable. I was pleased to hear him mention “Inventions and Dimensions,” which was one of Herbie Hancock’s lesser known records. I bought it in the ‘80s after hearing a song on a jazz station. And it’s too bad the interviewer didn’t ask him about giving private lessons. I knew a young guy in the ‘80s who took lessons from Steve Kahn.
For a guy who's 72 years old, Steve Khan looks absolutely incredible for his age and doesn't look much different to how he looked in the 90s. Aside from being a great guy, i consider him to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time and has made some fantastic music. For me his best work ever and my all time favourite album was 'The Green Field' with John Pattiucci and Jack DeJohnette. Fantastic interview and great insight into a true legend
I'm in awe of his sense of humility. It defines his character and I am extremely impressed by a musician who I only saw as a great guitar player and session guy.

I've only just seen this, fantastic interview. I never saw him live, and I realised I never heard him speak so it was great to see him talk about the Eyewitness albums, and the Dreams experience with the Columbia years In between. Khan, Jackson, Jordan, Badrena were the perfect group for me.
I've been listening to the Tightrope album for 40 years. First the LP then a japanese import CD, now on the ipod. Still my favorite SK album. The cover of "Darlin' Darlin' Baby" is just gorgeous! Great interview - Thank You!

I used to look forward to his column in Guitar Player magazine back in the 80s. He always grabbed me as a light hearted funny guy. I always felt that he was the heavyweight that l could've taken lessons from without feeling intimated but at the same time being awestruck. I feel that way even more after seeing this

I remember some years back, in trying to figure out the chordal structure to Wayne Shorter's Pinocchio emailing Steve and asking for his advice. His response was personable, warm and immensely insightful. He had a set of changes mapped out for that song that changed my experience of it. A treasure of a musician and a human. Thanks Steve :)

Steve is a great guitarist who has played some great music. His 1994 album 'Crossings' is really great. He has also played some outstanding guitar solos on some of my favorite Steely Dan songs: 'Glamour Profession' and 'My Rival'. And his Miles' voice wasn't bad either!
Interesting interview. I have a steve Kahn album called "got my mental", that I actually heard over and over again during a period of 2 years. It is a relaxed album with some great musical interactions, and Steve is playing some interesting and little ouside (at least to a bluesman like me) great sounding lines too. His musical mates Dave Sanborn and Michael Brecker are my personal favorite hornplayers, who both inspired me imensly. Great interviewer, basically lets Steve Kahn talk. My circle of fond musicians and I used to play a number of Steve's Eyewitness works decades back, such as Blades, or their utter punk version of Penetration - a welcomed study/thorough ass kicking. Pulling such material off authentically was both a challenge, and eventually, a satisfying self-accomplishment. So imagine my thrill when a pal passed Steve's email to me. Normally I'd not reach out and be a bother, but our mutual acquaintance said he likes to hear from people. Inspired as such, I immediately followed through, just to introduce myself, rave about recordings etc. Not only did Steve write me back sincere, thorough emails, but duped and mailed bootlegs, or Import label stuff of his onto CDs for me...we talked about our shared love of hockey too, of course. I wished I'd kept in touch, but also didn't want to be a pest. One impactful thing I recall is Steve communicating with me as if I were a mutual contemporary of his - like, on his level (!!) - not as a fan, but a fellow professional - something I've been careful to emulate when speaking with other players, whether a student, a hobbyist or fellow professionals. I got that trait directly from interacting with Steve - BE a good example.
THAT was a really enjoyable thing to listen to. Quit a humble guy with quite a story & message. He doesn't seem to get what an original voice he has as a musician.
He mentions that John Scofield asked to borrow his amp for a studio date with drummer Horacee Arnold. But Arnold’s first solo record “Tribe” didn’t include a guitar player, and on his better known follow up “Tales of the Exonerated Flea” the guitarist was John Abercrombie. Those albums were released in 1973 and 1974. Maybe Scofield played a little bit with Arnold, but I don’t think he played a recording date with him.
It makes sense now....in the late seventies i went to see him at seventh ave south....i see him sitting to the side with one or two people and ask for a picture with him ,myself and my GF and remember him acting oddly and figured it was the typical who the hell are you and we left after the gig with a bad impression.....it didnt stop me from listening to him thru today still.Bottom line....he must have been overwhelmed by a NY city approach...lol...love his sound

For a guy as mild mannered as he appears, I always thought he had meanest ,aggressive ,big east coast sound of all those guitarist. I saw him in a hallway at bogarts in Cincinnati and said Steve ,and he kinda jumped and looked surprised that I knew who he was. I think he was sideman for Tom Scott. He sounded great that night .I think jimmy haslip was on bass and that inspired me to switch from a p bass to a b.c.rich eagle like jimmy.lol
The looks a bit yes, but I don't think he sounds like Groucho. Groucho had a thick distinctive NYC accent which IMHO Steve lacks. I was addicted to his music during the early to mid eighties with Jordan, Badrena and Jackson. I still see it some of the greatest modern jazz.

Khan is nothing less than a Giant of a musician.
