This is a huge problem though, investors will never give them millions to experiment with new things because they are afraid it will flop and they will lose money, if they ruined all franchises what movies are they gonna make?
give it a decade or two and they will reboot those franchises as soon as they think there is a market again. just look at how many times the batman franchise has been remade. you have the corny live action batman from the 1940s, the movie series from the 1990s, the animated cartoons from the 1990s, the dark knight trilogy, etc.. same thing happened with X-Men, Star Trek, and many others. big franchises don't die, they just go into hibernation for a few years until a new director/studio wants to try again.

No one cared about Guardians of the Galaxy until they made a great movie. It's not that these new characters are B or C list, it's that the movies are shit. Guardians proved that you can make an absolute hit with low tier characters by just making great movies.

Exactly. He made great pains to be true to the source material (no 'reimagined for modern audiences' doublespeak) and his trilogy was one of the best regarded and most successful of all time. The precedent, the recipe for success, is right there for everyone to see, but they're deliberately ignoring it.
LOTR by Peter Jackson was at some point going very much away from the books... but the FANS turned Peter's mind around. The One Ring community is to thank for the LOTR trilogy as well.
@@paulw5039 I mean he did make changes like with the eye of Sauron which in the book was not a literal eye on top of Barad-Dur but then again adaptations need to make changes to work. He generally stayed true to the spirit of the books. Also knowing some of Tolkiens general attitudes he probably wouldn't have liked the movies. Then again the guy who wrote the book for Willy Wonka didn't like the original movie which was a huge success. I guess that's just the authors pride as an artist

Changing source material is not always a bad thing. You can't always get 1to1 to the source material. Look at marvel, they get close, but still make their own version.

I agree. It’s literally a problem of priorities. Your No.1 priority should be making a good story, book, comic, movie, series or game. If your No.1 priority is DEI, then you are inevitably going to sacrifice making the best product that you can because it is not your main priority.

I used to hang out in a streamer friends discord channel and have a great time, I felt like I could just be myself and relax around my friends in there. She happened to be trans but I didn't give a sh*t about that, she was fun to hang out with and was a good friend. I used to moderate for her stream channel and would hang out with everyone in virtual reality all the time. After her channel started to get super popular I felt like I was getting pushed further and further from her community, it was getting filled to the brim with people just like Ernest. After that, instead of relaxing and having a great time I was always trying to be careful about everything I said, walking on eggshells. Even with me being so careful, because I said 'hey guys' to a group of people, an Ernest in that group added me to some sort of blacklist of people. This list was consistently shared with other Ernest's so they could ban everyone on the list, even if they haven't ever interacted with the people or even seen them at all. It's fricken crazy man.

The issue with diversity politics in entertainment companies is that having an opposing view is easily labelled as racism and you will be reported to HR and fired, so any rational person even remotely suggesting "hey guys this is going overboard a bit maybe we do it a different way" is gone, or is not speaking in fear of losing their job. That's not right, it's not fair, and it's definitely not healthy.

I feel like diversity in media does best when it's implicit. The character doesn't need to make a speech about white privilelge or male privilege. If the character is black or a woman and they are doing amazing heroic things, that speaks for itself. If they do struggle against discrimination, that needs to be center to the story and be told in a good way, narrative wise, like Mulan, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame, or some episodes of Avatar The Last Airbender.

Look at 2000s Static Shock cartoon - literally had an episode where titular Black protag and his White BFF got kidnapped and their fathers went to look for kids... But White Father was a racist... Not a caricature of one... A reasonable person with flaws. Flaws that didn't came out of nowhere - his world view became like that because for years he was social worker in ghetto and was dissapointed again and again by deeds of local black people. And MC's Black Father calls him out on it, reminds that every person is different and they MUST put their prejudices aside and work TOGETHER to find their sons and just BE BETTER for the sake of their sons even if their life experiences make it hard for them. And it wasn't presented like preaching - it was exactly presented like one parent talking to the other. Heck, racist White Father was specifically presented as a very decent person aside for his flaw not as a BAD person. Just a man who had actual reasons to have a worldview he had and reflected on his actions by the end of episode deciding to be better for the sake of his son. You can even argue that moral of the story was not just "Racism is bad" but "Parents have to try to better themselves for the sake of their kids" using "Racism" as the example of a "flaw" one can have.
The entire industry was doing better prior too. Current movies failing with horribly written female leads being blamed on sexist men not wanting that in their movies.. but men loved Sarah Conners and Ellen Ripley making those franchises successful.... because THEY WERE WELL WRITTEN. Imagine that. Captain Marvel failed because it was written by activists making a point instead of writers telling a good story.

We had a woman present the pre-ANZAC day speech at my daughters school today. ANZAC day in australia is specifically about the men who died in gallipoli during World War I. The first 3 minutes of a 4 minute speech was about women in the army in the 80s and how they aren't allowed to be in combat situations even though, and i quote, "women can do all the things men do in the army". She spoke about how women would need to leave the army if they fell pregnant. Regardless of validity of any of what she said is, ANZAC day is not the vehicle to use for gender politics to a primary school with kids aged 6-12. This is essentially what Disney is doing. Using the wrong vehicle to spread a message. It's messed up.

If your daughter starts getting bullied, then one or more of the parents is being very immature and disrespectful, and should be penalized. The thing with these subjects is that a lot more people than you think care about these things, they just don't know how to speak up while others would love to have a congregate of parents to side with them. Keeping quiet just enables it further. Just my two cents. You putting your kids first is the correct approach as a parent, but doing the right thing at the right time could save you future headaches.

The biggest issue is Hulk's entire development was about controlling his anger allowing him to control his power but she hulk's power is amplified by hatred of men with complete control without any character development with the added excuse of "women have had to deal with men therefore they've been controlling their anger since the beginning of human history" kind of BS. The core value is literally "women strong, men weak."

When you make a good character so insufferable, that some of the audience *wants* them dead so they’re out of the story, you know you messed up. I was just waiting for She-Hulk to be humbled or killed off, so Banner took her place.

Black Panther made sense ... it's like, they're complaining about the fact that there are no Black people in Shogun, a time period series about Japan. White people hardly even existed at that time over there, so of course the cast is going to be "Asian" (Japanese) only. It makes sense. I need one of these influencers to point out the simple fact that 50% or more Male gamers when playing an MMO create an attractive female character rather than someone that "represents" them. If we have to stare at something for hours at a time, it might as well be appeasing. Gamers DO NOT CARE about representation we just want something fun to look at. Whether it's Kratos godlike physique and tattoos or 2B's greatest assets. We DON'T care about seeing ourselves in games as long as the main character is good looking or well written. Like everyone says, gaming is an ESCAPE. The last thing I wanna see in a fantasy world (as much as I love myself) is myself or being reminded about the real world.

As a Hulk fan, I'm disappointed in Disney Marvel for not letting Hulk get his revenge on Thanos after Infinity War. I so wanted a one on one throwdown similar or greater than Hulk vs Hulkbuster in Age of Ultron. Another one is not giving Hulk his own movie series. I like the Ant Man but the Hulk should've had his own series before Ant Man.

Identity politics doesn’t attract mainstream audiences. If you divide your audience don’t expect your audience to grow. If you cater for one group, especially if it is a niche, don’t expect a mainstream success. If in addition to this agenda pandering you suffer from a serious lack of creativity, talent and passion, you should not be surprised if a lukewarm reception is the best you can expect and in general you are pushing commercial AND creative flops. If you have an agenda, fine, if you want to target a niche audience, fine, but do so with new material, do so with creative storytelling. Create NEW epic heroes and tales, but if you fail don’t blame the audience and (grassroots) critics. In a way the customer is always right and customers, in general as a mainstream audience, are rejecting the identity agenda driven movies and stories. The people who push this are suffering from an extreme case of denial. It is a culture war, don’t be fooled. It is not a matter of taste if it is structural. There are always flops, but this is not what is happening in the entertainment business right now.
@@zuzusflower9503 dude the saddest part is that I recently started reading the legacy of the force books (which essentially the same time period as the sequels in legends) and it’s like Luke can tell that Han’s son is turning to the dark side, but for a lot of the time he’s genuinly worried about him. And he doesn’t blame him either, he can tell that there’s somebody manipulating him (which is mostly true) and that if he could just get that person out of the picture then Han’s son would be easy to bring back to the light. It’s just like… DUH. That’s what Luke would actually think. Obviously. He always assumes the best in people even if it gets him into trouble. Exactly, also on a more basic note, people have to start somewhere. It is not like (especially if you aren't from America) your parents would be so into comic characters and be like "wow, now I am gonna watch Iron Man with my child". Sure there were the comics, but I am sure for the majority it just looked like a cool film / series first, and only after watching it they liked the characters. When the first MCU Iron Man film was released, I had no idea who he was.Iirc there was like one episode in the 90s Spider-Man cartoon where he appeared for like 5min, that was my Iron Man knowledge.

Feel like Asmon over-generalizes Marvel films success down to nostalgia when that's... really not true at all. They had fantastic casting, were well produced, and were pretty well marketed. Nostalgia may have even been a slight deterrent due to how terrible a lot of older Marvel films had been, vexing certain people from seeing later films.
You could tell when Black Panther 2 had a BIG tonal/writing room shift. Part of the movie they had dedicated to Chadwick Bozeman was amazing and really tugs on your heart strings, great part. Then when it shifts over to the conflict between Suri and Nemor you will find yourself questioning a lot of actions and choices, even for a superhero movie. Like the characters are supposed to be geniuses and wise but they make terrible decisions. Who attacks a sea based opponent with a boat when you have something they want on a land locked area???

Disney has a problem hiring people for their actual qualifications in terms of skill and knowledge, and instead they prioritise people’s identity. If you want a good movie, hire people who make good movies and ALSO know and love the source material. Disney instead prioritise the person who will get them the most DEI, when that should be a secondary consideration.
To me, it boils down to this... I don't watch a movie to be "taught a lesson" or be "educated". I watch a movie to be entertained, period, end of story. If entertainment (ie story) value in a movie is sacrificed on the altar of a "cause" no matter how just it is, it kills the engagement for me.
If they really have a cause they should make it a documentary rather than some fictional movie. then they can go all out on the cause without ruining what they are doing by putting it where it won't get as much attention or get negative attention because its not an entertaining film.
sad part is the could teach a less or educate, but that requires good writing, good direction and attention to detail. They don't do any of the three. they need to go back to writing a full script, a good script review, storyboarding and using a plan and not a bunch of reshoots to try and duct tape scenes to a movie without a plan.

People say musicals are bad but like old animated Disney movies that are almost all musicals. Also The Sound of Music, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, The South park Movie, Team America and not to mention the Wizard of OZ. There are quite a few good musicals out there but some people either forget them or don't realize they're musicals.

The issue with Joker 2 being a musical can be summed up as... Imagine a FPS game comes out. It's a massive success. Then some years later, a sequel comes out... and its a Puzzle game. Not just a puzzle game, but a cutesy girly one. WTF? You cultivated a fan base around one thing, and COMPLETELY discard that fan base as you make a product that targets another drastically different audience. Joker 1 was a huge hit, because it was a non-political movie for mostly guys, at a time that... guys were just not getting many such movies. And starting with the casting of Lady Gaga in Joker 2, someone who is ONLY popular with women... then on top of that turning the movie into a genre that is basically only popular with women... is the BIGGEST MIDDLE FINGER to the audience you cultivated with the first movie. It's not just a accidental dumb choice. Its PURPOSEFUL! There was intention behind the casting and genre change. And seeing what era we live in, its easy to conclude that intention was to be woke and actively piss off the established fan base. It's a slap in the face. A insult.
I don't think you can judge that until it's out. There may be some interesting avenues with the plot/story and dream/musical like mindset someone like Harley may have. Joker is a film I really enjoyed and thought was great, but it definitely has political nuance to it's narrative.

Shogun is a good example of how diversity can drive a good story showing different world views, traditions, and also viewing morality differently. Diversity can be a good element in a story but if you put green apples all over your film with no purpose other than to be there people will think "the fuck are all the green apples doing here?"
I would say, shogun and black panther are both examples of movies with almost no diversity. The trick is that by focusing completely on african or japanese people, it escapes the normal hollywood need for deconstructing every modernist story telling element. BP for instance is a king of an ethnic monarchy, who rules by divine right, and hes the good guy. By being so "diverse" they escape the woke, and that makes them much more likely to be good.

Yea. And at that time, they took their time with careful planning and casting to elevate those characters into A and B list characters for the silver screen. But in recent years, Marvel has become lazy and entitled. They don't carefully plan to elevate C and D list characters into something more. They use them as a medium to push politics, relying on the characters VERY generalized lore as all they need. At best, they falsely view changing the characters to suit their agenda, as somehow elevating the character. It's right back to the topic of older movies putting Quality and Entertainment first as a path to success, and newer ones putting Identity and Appeasing Journalists first as the path to success.
One of the reasons why I love anime is because, while there is a lot of trash out there, there’s also a lot of masterpieces and great stories. Also writing a great character matter way more than their gender. Yor (from Spy X Family), Maomao (from Apothecary Diaries), Rishe (from 7th time loop) and Aileen (from Villainess Taming the final Boss) are all amazing and badass because of who they are, not what what they are. And the story telling in those four anime is awesome.

BG3 has some woke narratives, but it does not demand that players abide by them. Take the arguably "political" narrative af the tiefling migrant refugees (if one wants to draw real world parallels, one can)... in a truly woke game there is no way the players would allowed to annihilate them. As for the romancing aspect of the gameplay, that is also entirely up to player preference and tastes. Woke games force narratives devoid of player choice.
People loved black panther. The thing with Black Panther was, yeah it had a great story, but the topic that it had "an all black cast" came up after the movie released and when it broke records and won so many awards. They didn't use this fact to sell tickets. This was highlighted after the success of the movie. Even the first Captain Marvel movie didn't used the fact that it had a female superhero lead to sell tickets. The movie was quite good. Whatever Brie said, keeping it aside, the story was good enough for her introduction before endgame. Now disney use these "woke" agendas to try and sell the movies and shows instead of focussing on things that matter. Avatar released in 2009 and earned billions. Avatars CGI is a billion times better than the disaster that was she-hulk. I remember when 2-3 years ago, before Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba was the favourite for the next bond. I am really happy that it's not happening anymore. Nothing against Idris but bond has to be like how he is described in the books. You can't change that just because some woke director want it to. No movie having Samuel Jackson or Morgan Freeman ever mentioned that it has a black lead in the movie. Samuel is the highest grossing hollywood actor ever!!!!
The reality here is that when Hollywood wants to staff their studios, the only people who will agree to carry out their agenda, are devoted ideologues. The problem with devoted ideologues is that , for the most part, they aren’t any good at their jobs. They didn’t get their jobs because of their talent. They got their jobs because they were willing to do whatever they were told, regardless of what the repercussions might be.
The issue with woke story telling is not diversity, but rather the limitations it places on the stories you can tell. If you have a product that has to have a bunch of different groups represented, but you are limited in the ways you can present those groups, it inherently places limits on the creative freedom you have with that story telling. To me, diversity doesn't matter at all in story telling. I can watch a movie with an all Korean cast and enjoy it without having to see myself represented. People should also be capable of seeing a film set in medieval Europe with an all white cast without throwing a hissy fit. All that matters, at the end of the day, is good story telling. You can't tell good stories if men aren't allowed to reinforce masculine ideals, women aren't allowed to have feminine traits, ethnic minorities aren't shown to have substantive flaws and whites are to be presented as incompetent and/or evil. Not only does this limit story telling, it also makes stories predictable as certain groups have to be written certain ways. These are the issues with woke writing. It's not simply just the abitrary checkbox thing (which in and of itself is pretty stupid), it's the creative limitations placed on a medium. That being said, I'd love to see more stories hailing from regions of the world with different mythologies. I'd love an African fantasy series that weaves mythologies of different regions in Africa in a similar vein to LOTR, and you can base different clans of the world on existing ethnic groups like the nilotes and the pygmies like Tolkien did for dwarves, hobbits and elves which were based on different ethnicities in the UK. There's so many creative things you could do with other cultural mythologies we're just bogged down with having to put a diverse face on European stories, instead of extending outwards and finding inspiration elsewhere to tell more original stories.
Ive always loved diversity films and tv shows and grew up with black casts or like xena, charmed, buffy, etc... They werent made with the forced diversity, representation, woke messaging, gender politics as they are now. No terms like mansplaining, they just kicked ass. No things like Oh you cant say this cuz im nonbinary and that hurts my feelings. No race swappings to check diversity boxes. No 'im a woman so im better and you are a man you are always evil" messaging. @jimkillerx if you mean diversity in the way they mean it, as in not white, then yes, it is an issue. But you can have a story told that revolves around any ethnicity and it can be a good story. Again, I've enjoyed plenty of media that is a purely Asian cast or a purely black cast and I've not had any issues with 'not seeing myself'. All that matters is substance, as in a great story.

Black Panther 1 is not a diverse movie though so it's really annoying it's always held as some kind of counter example. It has two "tolkien white guys", otherwise it's a fully black cast. Also the black cast makes sense for the movie which also makes it not a diverse movie. Furthermore the villain was the BLM supporter trying to get weapons to everyone to kill "the oppressors" while the hero was an isolationist nationalist preaching for peace. It's about as far from ESG and DEI you can get. If it hadn't introduced Shuri (or whatever her name was) it would have been an excellent MCU movie.

If it's about representation only, that'd only cater to the people that it represents. The other range of audience wouldn't care much, or at all, unless it brings a recognition about what's unique about that representation Rush Hour wasn't a success because it's led by a Chinese and an black American actor. It was a success because it gives quite a recognition on how funny the dynamics of a Chinese man and a black American man can be. People are also really intrigued by KDramas just fine, because those often bring new things to film audiences about some things unique about Korea or Korean themselves, that can attract attention from any range of audience

give it a decade or two and they will reboot those franchises as soon as they think there is a market again. just look at how many times the batman franchise has been remade. you have the corny live action batman from the 1940s, the movie series from the 1990s, the animated cartoons from the 1990s, the dark knight trilogy, etc.. same thing happened with X-Men, Star Trek, and many others.
big franchises don't die, they just go into hibernation for a few years until a new director/studio wants to try again.

Exactly. He made great pains to be true to the source material (no 'reimagined for modern audiences' doublespeak) and his trilogy was one of the best regarded and most successful of all time. The precedent, the recipe for success, is right there for everyone to see, but they're deliberately ignoring it.
LOTR by Peter Jackson was at some point going very much away from the books... but the FANS turned Peter's mind around. The One Ring community is to thank for the LOTR trilogy as well.

I used to hang out in a streamer friends discord channel and have a great time, I felt like I could just be myself and relax around my friends in there. She happened to be trans but I didn't give a sh*t about that, she was fun to hang out with and was a good friend. I used to moderate for her stream channel and would hang out with everyone in virtual reality all the time. After her channel started to get super popular I felt like I was getting pushed further and further from her community, it was getting filled to the brim with people just like Ernest. After that, instead of relaxing and having a great time I was always trying to be careful about everything I said, walking on eggshells. Even with me being so careful, because I said 'hey guys' to a group of people, an Ernest in that group added me to some sort of blacklist of people. This list was consistently shared with other Ernest's so they could ban everyone on the list, even if they haven't ever interacted with the people or even seen them at all. It's fricken crazy man.

I feel like diversity in media does best when it's implicit. The character doesn't need to make a speech about white privilelge or male privilege. If the character is black or a woman and they are doing amazing heroic things, that speaks for itself. If they do struggle against discrimination, that needs to be center to the story and be told in a good way, narrative wise, like Mulan, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame, or some episodes of Avatar The Last Airbender.

Look at 2000s Static Shock cartoon - literally had an episode where titular Black protag and his White BFF got kidnapped and their fathers went to look for kids... But White Father was a racist... Not a caricature of one... A reasonable person with flaws. Flaws that didn't came out of nowhere - his world view became like that because for years he was social worker in ghetto and was dissapointed again and again by deeds of local black people. And MC's Black Father calls him out on it, reminds that every person is different and they MUST put their prejudices aside and work TOGETHER to find their sons and just BE BETTER for the sake of their sons even if their life experiences make it hard for them.
And it wasn't presented like preaching - it was exactly presented like one parent talking to the other. Heck, racist White Father was specifically presented as a very decent person aside for his flaw not as a BAD person. Just a man who had actual reasons to have a worldview he had and reflected on his actions by the end of episode deciding to be better for the sake of his son.
You can even argue that moral of the story was not just "Racism is bad" but "Parents have to try to better themselves for the sake of their kids" using "Racism" as the example of a "flaw" one can have.

The entire industry was doing better prior too. We had a woman present the pre-ANZAC day speech at my daughters school today.
ANZAC day in australia is specifically about the men who died in gallipoli during World War I.
The first 3 minutes of a 4 minute speech was about women in the army in the 80s and how they aren't allowed to be in combat situations even though, and i quote, "women can do all the things men do in the army". She spoke about how women would need to leave the army if they fell pregnant. Regardless of validity of any of what she said is, ANZAC day is not the vehicle to use for gender politics to a primary school with kids aged 6-12.
This is essentially what Disney is doing. Using the wrong vehicle to spread a message. It's messed up.

She Hulk is cool in the comics, but the showrunner made her awful, stupid, cringe and pathetic.
The biggest issue is Hulk's entire development was about controlling his anger allowing him to control his power but she hulk's power is amplified by hatred of men with complete control without any character development with the added excuse of "women have had to deal with men therefore they've been controlling their anger since the beginning of human history" kind of BS. When you make a good character so insufferable, that some of the audience *wants* them dead so they’re out of the story, you know you messed up. I was just waiting for She-Hulk to be humbled or killed off, so Banner took her place.

I need one of these influencers to point out the simple fact that 50% or more Male gamers when playing an MMO create an attractive female character rather than someone that "represents" them. If we have to stare at something for hours at a time, it might as well be appeasing. Gamers DO NOT CARE about representation we just want something fun to look at. Whether it's Kratos godlike physique and tattoos or 2B's greatest assets. We DON'T care about seeing ourselves in games as long as the main character is good looking or well written. Like everyone says, gaming is an ESCAPE. The last thing I wanna see in a fantasy world (as much as I love myself) is myself or being reminded about the real world.

As a Hulk fan, I'm disappointed in Disney Marvel for not letting Hulk get his revenge on Thanos after Infinity War. I so wanted a one on one throwdown similar or greater than Hulk vs Hulkbuster in Age of Ultron. Another one is not giving Hulk his own movie series. I like the Ant Man but the Hulk should've had his own series before Ant Man.

And he doesn’t blame him either, he can tell that there’s somebody manipulating him (which is mostly true) and that if he could just get that person out of the picture then Han’s son would be easy to bring back to the light.

Normies didn't know many of the Marvel characters whose movies turned out to be successful, chief among them the Guardians of the Galaxy. Exactly, also on a more basic note, people have to start somewhere. It is not like (especially if you aren't from America) your parents would be so into comic characters and be like "wow, now I am gonna watch Iron Man with my child". Sure there were the comics, but I am sure for the majority it just looked like a cool film / series first, and only after watching it they liked the characters.
When the first MCU Iron Man film was released, I had no idea who he was.Iirc there was like one episode in the 90s Spider-Man cartoon where he appeared for like 5min, that was my Iron Man knowledge.

Feel like Asmon over-generalizes Marvel films success down to nostalgia when that's... really not true at all. They had fantastic casting, were well produced, and were pretty well marketed. Nostalgia may have even been a slight deterrent due to how terrible a lot of older Marvel films had been, vexing certain people from seeing later films.
You could tell when Black Panther 2 had a BIG tonal/writing room shift. Part of the movie they had dedicated to Chadwick Bozeman was amazing and really tugs on your heart strings, great part. Then when it shifts over to the conflict between Suri and Nemor you will find yourself questioning a lot of actions and choices, even for a superhero movie. Like the characters are supposed to be geniuses and wise but they make terrible decisions. Who attacks a sea based opponent with a boat when you have something they want on a land locked area???

There used to be many great musical movies, but culture has changed. Musicals were hugely popular with the Greatest Generation and with the Silent Generation that followed them. Even many baby boomers enjoyed musicals. It's only relatively recently with Millennials and later generations that they've declined precipitously. The "GLEE" tv show did really well, so even among young folks there is still an audience.

Disney has a problem hiring people for their actual qualifications in terms of skill and knowledge, and instead they prioritise people’s identity.
If you want a good movie, hire people who make good movies and ALSO know and love the source material.
Disney instead prioritise the person who will get them the most DEI, when that should be a secondary consideration.
To me, it boils down to this... I don't watch a movie to be "taught a lesson" or be "educated". I watch a movie to be entertained, period, end of story. If entertainment (ie story) value in a movie is sacrificed on the altar of a "cause" no matter how just it is, it kills the engagement for me.
If they really have a cause they should make it a documentary rather than some fictional movie. then they can go all out on the cause without ruining what they are doing by putting it where it won't get as much attention or get negative attention because its not an entertaining film.
sad part is the could teach a less or educate, but that requires good writing, good direction and attention to detail. They don't do any of the three. they need to go back to writing a full script, a good script review, storyboarding and using a plan and not a bunch of reshoots to try and duct tape scenes to a movie without a plan.

People say musicals are bad but like old animated Disney movies that are almost all musicals. Also The Sound of Music, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, The South park Movie, Team America and not to mention the Wizard of OZ. There are quite a few good musicals out there but some people either forget them or don't realize they're musicals.
Most of the South Park guys other movies seem to be musicals. BASEketball wasn’t, but you need to check out their first movie Cannibal: The Musical

The issue with Joker 2 being a musical can be summed up as... Imagine a FPS game comes out. It's a massive success. Then some years later, a sequel comes out... and its a Puzzle game. Not just a puzzle game, but a cutesy girly one. WTF? You cultivated a fan base around one thing, and COMPLETELY discard that fan base as you make a product that targets another drastically different audience.
Joker 1 was a huge hit, because it was a non-political movie for mostly guys, at a time that... guys were just not getting many such movies. And starting with the casting of Lady Gaga in Joker 2, someone who is ONLY popular with women... then on top of that turning the movie into a genre that is basically only popular with women... is the BIGGEST MIDDLE FINGER to the audience you cultivated with the first movie. It's not just a accidental dumb choice. Its PURPOSEFUL! There was intention behind the casting and genre change. And seeing what era we live in, its easy to conclude that intention was to be woke and actively piss off the established fan base. It's a slap in the face. A insult.
I don't think you can judge that until it's out. There may be some interesting avenues with the plot/story and dream/musical like mindset someone like Harley may have.
Joker is a film I really enjoyed and thought was great, but it definitely has political nuance to it's narrative.

They are given franchises and universes to work in, but that isn't what they want. They want to make their own story, make their own mark.
They aren't content just making a Witcher series, They want to make THIER Witcher series. They don't want to make a star wars movie or series. They want to make THEIR star wars movie or series

Shogun is a good example of how diversity can drive a good story showing different world views, traditions, and also viewing morality differently. Diversity can be a good element in a story but if you put green apples all over your film with no purpose other than to be there people will think "the fuck are all the green apples doing here?"
And then some people have the audacity to ask "WhERe aRe All tHE BlACk PEoplE?!?!??!!?" or other minorities, in a show where it takes place in Japan.
I would say, shogun and black panther are both examples of movies with almost no diversity. The trick is that by focusing completely on african or japanese people, it escapes the normal hollywood need for deconstructing every modernist story telling element. BP for instance is a king of an ethnic monarchy, who rules by divine right, and hes the good guy. By being so "diverse" they escape the woke, and that makes them much more likely to be good.
Bruh. Shogun is 99% Asian with a token white guy. That is not diverse.
Shogun is also based on a real event. In fact, two of the white characters became samurai in real life.

Coming from a son of a mother who loves musicals, I think "ew" cuz musicals tbh... suck. The only musical that i tolerated was Phantom of the Opera bc the story AND the music was pretty okay. The rest, suck. Idk why my mother likes them so much. I find musicals to be the most fakest films and waste of money and time, but this is coming from me. I personally don't like musicals in general.

Yea. And at that time, they took their time with careful planning and casting to elevate those characters into A and B list characters for the silver screen.
But in recent years, Marvel has become lazy and entitled. They don't carefully plan to elevate C and D list characters into something more. They use them as a medium to push politics, relying on the characters VERY generalized lore as all they need. At best, they falsely view changing the characters to suit their agenda, as somehow elevating the character.
It's right back to the topic of older movies putting Quality and Entertainment first as a path to success, and newer ones putting Identity and Appeasing Journalists first as the path to success.

One of the reasons why I love anime is because, while there is a lot of trash out there, there’s also a lot of masterpieces and great stories. Also writing a great character matter way more than their gender. Yor (from Spy X Family), Maomao (from Apothecary Diaries), Rishe (from 7th time loop) and Aileen (from Villainess Taming the final Boss) are all amazing and badass because of who they are, not what what they are. And the story telling in those four anime is awesome.

A good movie full with diversity isnt woke, a bad movie full with diversity is woke becouse they focused on agenda and the message instead of a good movie. if the focused on a good story line and then put in a bunch of diversity thats not a problem since the diversity apeared naturaly becouse they focused on a good story.

Refuse to hiring Dwarf actor because Peter Dinklage statement that he was annoyed at the fact that Dwarf are only being cast in Dwarf role. And instead of giving them more opportunity they just decide to hire 1 dwarf and 6 other people...its like WTF...this movie would have done terrible, and it would have been as controversial as ever even without the Rachel Zegler comments about her role and the story itself.

The movie was going to be woke beyond belief even without her. As I mention the 7 special people replacing the 7 dwarves would not have been ignored. Asmon said that without her doing so there wouldn't have been a fraction of as much controversy. I guess my point of contention is a fraction. To me if the controversity was at 97% with Rachel Zegler, it would have been at 70% controversy without her involvement. She did made it worse. But not in a way that without her involvement it would have been ok, and no one would have notice. I feel he is downplaying the horrible decision that Disney have been doing as far as movie making and tv series making and the decision already taken about the movie itself. Rachel was in fact not the only thing controversial about the movie, and so NO, he is not right he saying that it would have been a fraction.

BG3 has some woke narratives, but it does not demand that players abide by them. Take the arguably "political" narrative af the tiefling migrant refugees (if one wants to draw real world parallels, one can)... in a truly woke game there is no way the players would allowed to annihilate them. As for the romancing aspect of the gameplay, that is also entirely up to player preference and tastes. Woke games force narratives devoid of player choice.

People loved black panther. The thing with Black Panther was, yeah it had a great story, but the topic that it had "an all black cast" came up after the movie released and when it broke records and won so many awards. They didn't use this fact to sell tickets. This was highlighted after the success of the movie. Even the first Captain Marvel movie didn't used the fact that it had a female superhero lead to sell tickets. The movie was quite good. Whatever Brie said, keeping it aside, the story was good enough for her introduction before endgame. Now disney use these "woke" agendas to try and sell the movies and shows instead of focussing on things that matter. Avatar released in 2009 and earned billions. Avatars CGI is a billion times better than the disaster that was she-hulk.
I remember when 2-3 years ago, before Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba was the favourite for the next bond. I am really happy that it's not happening anymore. Nothing against Idris but bond has to be like how he is described in the books. You can't change that just because some woke director want it to. No movie having Samuel Jackson or Morgan Freeman ever mentioned that it has a black lead in the movie. Samuel is the highest grossing hollywood actor ever!!!!
The reality here is that when Hollywood wants to staff their studios, the only people who will agree to carry out their agenda, are devoted ideologues. The problem with devoted ideologues is that , for the most part, they aren’t any good at their jobs. They didn’t get their jobs because of their talent. They got their jobs because they were willing to do whatever they were told, regardless of what the repercussions might be.
The issue with woke story telling is not diversity, but rather the limitations it places on the stories you can tell. If you have a product that has to have a bunch of different groups represented, but you are limited in the ways you can present those groups, it inherently places limits on the creative freedom you have with that story telling. To me, diversity doesn't matter at all in story telling. I can watch a movie with an all Korean cast and enjoy it without having to see myself represented. People should also be capable of seeing a film set in medieval Europe with an all white cast without throwing a hissy fit. All that matters, at the end of the day, is good story telling. You can't tell good stories if men aren't allowed to reinforce masculine ideals, women aren't allowed to have feminine traits, ethnic minorities aren't shown to have substantive flaws and whites are to be presented as incompetent and/or evil. Not only does this limit story telling, it also makes stories predictable as certain groups have to be written certain ways.
These are the issues with woke writing. It's not simply just the abitrary checkbox thing (which in and of itself is pretty stupid), it's the creative limitations placed on a medium. That being said, I'd love to see more stories hailing from regions of the world with different mythologies. I'd love an African fantasy series that weaves mythologies of different regions in Africa in a similar vein to LOTR, and you can base different clans of the world on existing ethnic groups like the nilotes and the pygmies like Tolkien did for dwarves, hobbits and elves which were based on different ethnicities in the UK.
There's so many creative things you could do with other cultural mythologies we're just bogged down with having to put a diverse face on European stories, instead of extending outwards and finding inspiration elsewhere to tell more original stories.

Ive always loved diversity films and tv shows and grew up with black casts or like xena, charmed, buffy, etc... They werent made with the forced diversity, representation, woke messaging, gender politics as they are now. No terms like mansplaining, they just kicked ass. No things like Oh you cant say this cuz im nonbinary and that hurts my feelings. No race swappings to check diversity boxes. No 'im a woman so im better and you are a man you are always evil" messaging.

@jimkillerx if you mean diversity in the way they mean it, as in not white, then yes, it is an issue. But you can have a story told that revolves around any ethnicity and it can be a good story. Again, I've enjoyed plenty of media that is a purely Asian cast or a purely black cast and I've not had any issues with 'not seeing myself'. All that matters is substance, as in a great story.

Black Panther 1 is not a diverse movie though so it's really annoying it's always held as some kind of counter example. It has two "tolkien white guys", otherwise it's a fully black cast. Also the black cast makes sense for the movie which also makes it not a diverse movie. Furthermore the villain was the BLM supporter trying to get weapons to everyone to kill "the oppressors" while the hero was an isolationist nationalist preaching for peace. It's about as far from ESG and DEI you can get. If it hadn't introduced Shuri (or whatever her name was) it would have been an excellent MCU movie.

@macairhead5137 the white actors in black panther played Bilbo in the hobbit films and Golem in the LOTR films. The Tolkien white guys is a reference to that.
If it's about representation only, that'd only cater to the people that it represents. The other range of audience wouldn't care much, or at all, unless it brings a recognition about what's unique about that representation
Rush Hour wasn't a success because it's led by a Chinese and an black American actor. It was a success because it gives quite a recognition on how funny the dynamics of a Chinese man and a black American man can be.
People are also really intrigued by KDramas just fine, because those often bring new things to film audiences about some things unique about Korea or Korean themselves, that can attract attention from any range of audience
