- Lisa Gade reviews the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin, a very light and thin gaming laptop minus the gamer looks. It has a classy metal chassis and weighs just 4.1 lb. / 1.87 kg. Thanks to our sponsor, Massdrop- check out their cool gear here: dro.ps/mobilete... . The GS65 starts at $1,799 with an NVIDIA GTX 1060 and the GTX 1070 Max-Q model (used in this review) starts around $2,000. All configs have an Intel 8th gen Core i7-8750H 6 core, 45 watt CPU, a 144Hz matte non-touch IPS display, per key RGB backlit keyboard and an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (except the Best Buy model which has a SATA3 SSD). The gaming and pro apps laptop houses up to 32GB DDR4 RAM, has two SSD slots, an ample battery and Killer WiFI and Ethernet. It competes with the Gigabyte Aero 15X and Asus RG Zephyrus GM501. Computer Upgrade King CUKUSA.com provided our review loaner and sells a few configs.

If I have a aunt like her I'll go to her house listen to her review laptop every weekend.
Same
Epitome of cool aunt material.
Glad you had a sponsor. You do such a fantastic job, so I'm glad your being discovered by companies. You deserve a million plus subscribers... Only a few hundred thousand to go. ;-)
I love the way you review. It's so thorough
360p club gonna be back when it's 1080, have been watching every review since early 2012
Lisa you are a legend the only reviewer who I would watch for my real purchases.
yeah. Most other reviewers are so superficial and don't touch on the important shit.
I just read this comment after posting something similar. Cheers to quality content and staying true to one's own vision.
She is pretty awesome!
I just read this comment before posting something similar lol. Erazed the sentence I had and liked yours instead.
Hi Lisa! I'm watching this off of my MSI GS65 Stealth Thin! :)
I ended up getting the Best Buy version and I'm happy with it. Thanks for the tip about undervolting. I did not think about that before your review. :D
This has been the laptop I've been looking at for a while now, but I'm totally waiting on a review for the Alienware m15 before making a final decision, keep up the awesome work!
We need a 4-way faceoff between the competing MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, and Razer Max Q laptops!
Steadfast Whiplash don’t forget acer!
They don't have anything comparable out.
Only if they updated the Triton 700 with 8th gen CPUs :/
Yes please!
U can basically compare them yourself:
-if u want a portable laptop, go with MSI
-if u want a nice look go with the Razor
-if u want the best for your money and dont have any special demands buy the ASUS
and if u want to plant some trees while buying a laptop buy Gigabyte (no joke)... for real, the Gigabyte is just a little bit better and more expensive version of the MSI
when ever u buy a laptop there is the trinity price, portability and hardware, so when u want a portable laptop with good hardware u pay a crap ton of money and the other way around, a cheap laptop with good hardware is often heavy.
Congratulations on 700k Subscribers!
I've been in love with this laptop ever since it was announced, but I never knew of your channel until this video popped up. I had to watch it of course, and I have to say I love the style of your videos over the other laptop reviewers. You bring a different element and I don't know what it is. Suffice to say I'll keep watching.
First time on this channel and I am impressed with not only the review but the knowledge from someone who could pass for my mom. Great job!
Years later and still no better reviewer than Lisa. Very thorough and honest in every video.
Nice! Thin, light, good upgrade path with full Thunderbolt 3... this might be the one for me!
Thanks Lisa!
Lisa is my favorite tech reviewer. I always look forward to that T-shirt!
Have had this machine for over a year...It is one of the best and the fastest machines I have ever purchased and it's unbelievable how small it is for the power it has.
I really love your reviews, Lisa! Very informative and helpful when purchasing laptops. Thank you for the videos!
I went from having an Alienware 17 to this one. My god the weight difference haha!
I like this better tbh.
Just an amazing piece of machinery to be so powerful but light. It actually performs much better then I thought it would gaming wise.
LOVE IT!!
As far as upgrading, as long as you take your time anyone can do it. A bit more to it but in the end it is not difficult.
Your reviews are really second to none. Engaging, not over the top, to the point, with the elements that do matter.
Always love your work. Excellent reviews straight to the point, and a healthy sprinkling of opinions. You tell it like it is and know your stuff. Thanks for your reviews, Lisa!
I'm late but just bought it today based on your review. You're the best Laptop reviewer on TH-cam. I'm a Macbook Pro user but this is the first Windows laptop I ever liked in years.
what do you think of it??
Self-upgrades, as Lisa said, are really pretty easy. I simply changed the Dragon Center fan setting to “Comfort Mode” and heat issues were solved while still getting outrageous performance.
Well... with performance mode, it hits 90 degrees out of the box.
What I did was repaste thermals and undervolt to achieve 80 degrees without the deficit of comfort mode since that mode lowers performance by quite a bit.
Great video! I went out and bought one! Best laptop I ever owned!
Great video. Long time viewer, first time subscriber (finally, as of this video). Sorry it took so long! Thanks for all you do, and all the choices you've helped inform.
please review the new Razer 15.6 and do a smack-down with this one
Great video, look forward to the smackdown against Aero 15x, thanks so much for that. Like many others also super interested in 3-way smackdown between these two and new Razer 15.6 when available. Thanks for all you do!
Been waiting for this review! ...but I was too impatient and already bought it haha. Always love your reviews.
So do you like your new GS65?
A little late to the party, but I just picked up the model Best Buy offers and it does have the Killer wifi card in it! Great review though, it definitely helped me make my decision!
Does anyone actually like the "gamer" aesthetic? I'm certain its only the suits in the board room of these companies that think "shucks those kids will think these are...as they say, dope"
nope, I personally don't want to work with a laptop at uni which screams "I AM A GAMER"
I go to boardrooms with an MSI GS73VR. No issue. Invoices paid. Contracts coming. People are insecure, damn.
This laptop looked decent.. until the keyboard was revealed.
It's not even just cause of what people think, most of the time the laptops are just so ugly and over the top!!!! ffs
When I was a young teenager, I LOVED the look of Alienware laptops. Now, I much prefer this look.
I see your channel for the first time, and it's great, great review. Definitely wanna see more :)
Please review the new razer blade 15, thanks
YJ Beatz this defentally competes with that, especially the 200-300 price difference
1-Step Fury yup
Build quality is gonna be way better.
Unchainedmaple888 ones aluminum, ones metal, where’d the difference?
1-Step Fury my razer blade stealth has build quality comparable to a MacBook. It feels like a tank. Probably thanks to a more rigid and slightly thicker aluminum casing. There is zero flex anywhere. The MSi is made of metal, but it is a thin casing with less than ideal metals. It won't feel anywhere as nice.
Thanks for the tip on Mass Drop!
I propose an impossible idea
A gaming utrabook with glossy screen under $4000. Resolution can be anything.
Why is the laptop screen changing color while you are showing off pictures on it? It is like a sine wave. Every few seconds it changes color.
Computer Upgrade King has an unfortunate name.
Skhmt hehehe...yup
King of the Cuk
Easy to remember. Gets people's attention. You don't know how marketing works. Everyone joking about their name is free advertising.
This unit is very tempting, but since the 1100 series are coming out, I'll control my craving and wait a little
Hi Lisa! Your reviews are always great to watch.
I know you're probably going to do a comparison video for this, the new Razer Blade and the Gigabyte Aero 15X, right? They're all bezel-less laptops that cater to pc gaming after all.
Yes, I'll smack them all down.
Well I am returning my MSI gs65 stealth thin which is 5 days old. I was looking over the laptop as I was having trouble installing my TB3 dock into it as the port is partially covered by the case. Upon further inspection the eithernet port is also partially blocked. When I turned the laptop over to inspect the case alignment I noticed that the sides of the upper case(keyboard side) were bulging and have clearly been fitted incorrectly. Even the headphone/mic jacks are misaligned. So looks like I am without any kind of a computer other than my mobile phone..I hope the build quality issues I have are limited to the single unit I got and that the build quality on the next one is better. If not then it's a full refund and back to the drawing board.
Another great review Lisa!
How is the hinge on this laptop? i've herd msi laptop hinges give up in a short period of time
Best reviewer in the business, thanks for the great video!
Finally, there is a really powerful super slim & light (power adaptor included) laptop with a decent premium looking without too much gaming feel which let you bring along to a client meeting.
And also, it comes with a 180-degree hinge which makes much a lot accessibility in the daily usage.
Of course, it will be perfect if MSI makes this power horse be a 360-degree flipped 2-in-1 Wacom EMR pen & touchscreen-able device.
I've been a Mac user for years but I'm sick of wasting partition space on my MBP for games when I need it for video work. They have this as a refurb. Going to grab one.
Shame they cheaped out on the backlight... 260 nits is a killer.
I also have a MSI GS65 Stealth Thin. To be honest I was shocked Lisa said max brightness is 260 nits. That seems a little low to me. The screen seems so much brighter than that. I don't think I ever set this laptop over 3/4 full brightness because the screen is too bright for me otherwise. Best Buy has these laptops for sale. Check it out if you're concerned about the brightness.
I read somewhere else it is 300 nits.
The way you do Reviews ja one of the best I found in TH-cam.
Can you please review the Razer Blade 15?
Was it just me or is that company really called Cuk-USA????? lmfao
There is also a company called COCKUSA, but they don't sell computers.
best review I have seen on this model. very comprehensive. thanks..
Amazing review as always! Perfect T-Shirt :) good laptop too.
Seriously interested in this one because of its lightweight and considerable battery capacity. I hope some company invent some mechine with 8th gen low power cpu with better graphic cards so it can have even better battery life.
Love ya girl keep doing what you do !! Do you do vlogs like when u go to ces or something it would be nice to see you test certain things out in the world
I don't mind this kind of sponsored video, short ad and not irrelevant, hope it will always be like that
Also the numpad is included. MSI has 4lbs laptop to be released that is a 1070 full not max q for 2500 dollars on xotic pc.
$$ $$ 😭😢
It pisses me off that their GS63VR its DEL, WIN, and FN buttons are on weird places only to find out they fixed it later!
Great review, waiting for a smackdown with the AERO 15X 👍
Love the reviews Lisa :D
Does anyone know what that golden circle part is on the laptop screen, mine broke and fell of i lost it and I wanted to buy a one
2022 and i still love the design
So many brands going to the thin and light direction. I keep wondering how their thermal systems work. I like thin, light and long-lasting laptops, but I really hate laptops with top specs perform tasks slower than some tablets due to thermal throttling..
This laptop or the P65 with gtx 1070? The P65 can be had in a cool white color, costs three hundred less, and I dont think the 2070 max-q performs a ton better.
Intel 9260?
Intel 9560 2x2 802.11ac?
Great vid Lisa...grabbed the MS65 at BB on the 11 of August, 2018 after watching your review. Luv it and you too!
Later
Could you do a comparison between this 65 stealth thin vs the normal 63 stealth pro. Cpu and gpu is the same, but what about screen and battery? I don't mind the lighter/heavier, but the 63 has a 2.5 and SD card reader, which I'd appreciate. But as far as I can tell by what specs I can find, the 65 has a bigger 4 cell battery vs 3 cell on 63, and the screen 98% accuracy on 65 vs I believe around 80% on the 63.
Thank you for your review Lisa! :) Have a three-way smackdown between this, Asus and Razer!
I really want one of these to replace my Lenovo y500 GT650m machine. But the upgradability of this laptop is putting me off.
Could you also teardown the screen? I am thinking to replace it to UHD.., but not sure how to dissemble it.
Smack down between this, the zephyrus m and the aero 15x please :D love your channel and videos
I love everything about it, except that gap between the top and bottom panels when it's opened. Too much space there.
Lisa, I think it would have been perfect if they had added an SD card slot. I think that's what gives the Aero the edge for me. Would love to see how both of these laptops perform against the Dell XPS 15 9570. I hear even though the XPS only has a 1050 Ti, it still outperforms the Aero in some instances of video rendering. Would love to see that proven. Thanks for your videos. You're awesome. If you ever go to Bid on let me know. Would love to meet up and talk tech. I have a small but growing channel and would appreciate some sage advice.
Thanks for the great reviews one the TH-cams for tech.
My favorite line 4:08 : "Yes, on the right side of the palm rest, if you squeeze it with intent, you can make the little plastic clips inside creak a little bit. Big deal. Who cares?"
My 1070 model from Newegg creaks when I rest my palms on the keyboard to type, it's quite annoying. It feels super flimsy when I want to grip it to put in my backpack. It also freezes 0.5 sec after each action, clicking around and such.
Tony T- Every laptop can malfunction out of the factory. Don't let this ruin the experience, I got the msi and love it
You are a total boss!!! Best laptop reviews!!
Love the laptop reviews
Looks good, but I think I prefer the Aero 15x 😃
I go for Aero 15w v8!
Shame the Aero 15x pretty much is completely unavailable in Sweden for whatever reason. I can get my hands on all the competitors easily, yet the Aero, which is the one I'm the most interested in, isn't available at all. Seems Gigabyte doesn't really have any re-sellers for their laptops here.
why did they cover that chip with kapton tape? ain't they sure in their soldering quality?
Also the MSI website shows the BB model has the Killer N1550 Combo (2*2 ac).
The floor model in the Best Buy near me has an Intel 9260 card.
Hi, I'm torn between getting this or an Alienware m15. I plan to just undervolt to manage heat. Which should I get?
Also, 11XX series in coming in July, they say. We should wait for 8th gen CPUs and 11 series cards..
fadoobaba- They release the high end gpus first which won't be coming to laptops anytime soon. Expect the mid range cards to be releasing at least at the end of the year which would mean mid range mobile gpus will probably come out at the latest early to mid next year.
I've liked the new laptops released by MSI and Razer, but I would wait until next year when a generational improvement will be available on the GPU side. It's great that Intel 8th generation CPUs are available and disappointing that Nvidia hasn't released a follow-up to the 10 series of graphics cards yet. Once Nvidia releases the 11th series I think the proposition of an expensive gaming laptop is a lot better since it will have more cutting edge technology inside.
Can’t wait until you review xps 9570 :)
Which one is prefect for games msi gs65 thin with 1070 Max q or hp omen 15 with 2060 Rtx ?!
The intel 9260 is last gen? I felt like it just came out...
Hello Lisa what do you think about this model and the MSI gs63 stealth pro ? The new processor is that good against the last one ?
As much as I was set on this laptop a while ago (when you reviewed Aero 15) I've changed my mind in favour of the new Razer. MSI's build quality and low brightness really kill it for me. Yes, Razer is more expensive but being a software developer I prefer paying more for better quality as it's something that earns me money and I'll be using it for a few years. Obviously we're yet to see a direct comparison between these 3 but it looks like Razer could be the better choice at this point, granted it's cooling is at least on par with these 2.
Hope you'll complete this set of thin-n-light performance laptops with a Razer Blade 15 review!
Thanks for the videos!
I'm trying to decide between this one and the new razer blade 15. Portability and looks are important for me. When I saw the new razer I was almost certain that I will buy it, but when I heard about razer's bad quality (they brake down rather fast) and their horrible customer support I wasn't so sure anymore.
How is MSI's quality? Do they brake down quickly and frequently? And how is their customer support? (I'm from Europe)
Thanks!
eb 88 the build quality is better on this razer than gs65, which is made with paneling, rather than unibody. Having said that razer is about $500 more expensive right now
Darius B thanks for the reply! I wasn't referring to the build quality. I meant the product quality overall. Is MSI known for building long-lasting hardware or do people complain that it has to be repaired frequently?
eb 88, I bought a 1400 euro msi ge60 four years ago its been nothing but trouble and half a year ago it stopped working all together iv had several people look at it and nobody can even say wtf it is.
When it worked it was overheating as fuck and i couldnt game on wifi because it spiked as fuck. I had a mid range 700 euro asus that could play games on wifi with no problem.
I will never buy msi again
is it possible to charge the laptop via the thunderbolt port? obviously not while gaming but if you were streaming videos would it charge?
Would there be a much more noticeable difference between the SATA 3 SSD and the NVMe? I was looking to get the Best Buy one.
Thank you for the Fan setting tip my Asus GL702vm laptop gets super hot when Im doing 3D modeling in 3DS max or blender I also live in a hot country but I usually have the AC on when Im working on my laptop but it does crash when it gets too hot.
Is it noisy when used for day to day activities?
Waiting for affordable laptops with real hdr panel and really bright screen for outdoor usage without compromise... Maybe next year with new cpu and gpu geberation...
do u know where I can get MSI dragon center? I purchased this from ibuypower and dragon center was not installed. I tried a file on msi website but it didn't work pls help :D
Hey lisa great vid as per usual....do you have any plans to review the new precision dell 2in 1? Wonder how the drawing experience compares in your eyes to sb2 and bob
Lisa can you review the Razer Blade 15 2018?
Please do a comparison with gm501, nes razer blade 15.6, gs65 stealth, and maybe the new asus scar ii.
Thank you!, i was wondering what the light next to the power button mean since it was changing colors all the time, or the camara button for that matter
What is the game shown with the float plane?
Would you please do a review of the new XPS15 9570 without 4k touch screen.
Hey Lisa! Big fan. :) If you have the time could you please review the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501GIXS74? There haven’t been any reviews done on the new model. It seems as though Asus has made some small improvements. I’m interested in how that 6 core intel CPU impacts the cooling and noise, considering the high praise you gave the original model in both of those departments. Thank you!
Can this run games at 4k? Im even fine with 1440p . Ill have an external monitor.
Great review. Keep it up.
hope u will be doing a review on the new razerblade 15 :)
