Remember guys...Zuko's only way home is to bring the Avatar to his father.
So even though he and Iroh have a peaceful life in Ba Sing Se, Zuko still craves his father's love and acceptance, so that's why he's still after Aang.

This is honestly one of my favourite episodes. The way Iroh finally gave Zuko the hard truth. Iroh the most supportive uncle you can have. But even he was like "Zuko you need to stop. You're chasing a goal someone else has given you."

Iroh didnt give him the truth tho. Zuko couldnt care less about capturing the Avatar if it didnt hinge on him returning to the fire nation. Only thing Iroh is right about is Zuko never thinking things through.

20:33 Yeeeaaah, that's the thing. Considering that Jet got hit with a boulder with high velocity (which would most likely cause internal bleeding and broken bones), the lack of proper medical equipment in this time period, Smellerbee crying and Toph's subtle line, Jet is 100% pushing daisies.

I get chills every time during irohs speech. Man went so crazy spitting facts. I think of the fact Zuko is 16 and uncle really trying to show him he’s free to make his own life. A concept I think we all struggle with deeply at that age.

yeah i love that little detail. he has a deep respect for zuko and his dignity even though he's so much younger than iroh. most people look down on zuko at this point in his life because of "how far he's fallen" but iroh still sees him as worthy and honorable
Jet is dead. Confirmed by the show's creators. When Longshot speaks, then turns around and draws his bow, it was to mercy-kill Jet to end his suffering. Nickolodeon execs wouldn't allow them to show that, so it was re-written, but he IS dead.
When Toph said "He's lying", she was referring to Jet saying he would be ok. Jet knew he wouldn't live, and Toph knew he knew.

@@Anne-mn9fs Actually, Long Feng himself even said, “You’ve chosen your own demise,” so it kinda *was* said in a way. It’s just that we don’t see the *exact* second of when Jet completely passed away on-screen.

I love Iroh so much in this ep. He really gave Zuko the tough love he needed to hear. RIP Jet :(
Also, Zuko's "Out of my way, skinny." is honestly such an underrated line.
Let's not forget Zuko is used to a life of people serving him not him serving people. It's a big change for him and he's still having an hard time accepting this fate dished out to him.
Jet is definitely dead. They never address it in the show but the fact that he told katara would be fine and Toph could sense that he was lying just confirms in its own “cartoon” way.
If you watch the episode with creator commentary on, they explicitly say Jet is dead.

That the destiny he's chasing isn't necessarily one he needs, definetly Top 5 Atla Scene moments.
Uncle finally letting Zuko have it gives me chills every single time. When Iroh speaks, EVERYONE LISTENS.
The situation with Jet is super heartbreaking and a lot more complex than people think. The ambiguous way he's left with all the context pointing to his death is depressing when we realize all this time he's been fighting against the Fire Nation, believing they were the true "big bad", only to have him fall by the hands of his own Earth Kingdom because of a sick and twisted man. It's just...it's so sad.
Fun fact: Originally Long Shot's arrow was supposed to be aimed at Jet to be a mersey killing, since he was gonna die anyway, but they were forced to changed it because it was gonna be shown to kids

It was really unclear. It’s a shame that Jet didn’t just focus his hatred on the Rough Rhinos, the ones that actually killed his parents.
I believe the show's creators confirmed that he did indeed die.

Zuko is addicted to trying to capture the Avatar. In this episode he relapsed.
that iroh speech give chills bro especially that last line at the end. "Who are you? And what do YOU want?". What an excellent lesson for kids, learn from zuko and don't just go through life trying to please your parents and reach their expectation because you are your own person with your own will. Figure out what truly brings you happiness in life and pursue it. Zuko is one of the best written characters in a cartoon history.

When Iroh yells that’s how you KNOW it’s time to be quiet and listen
I love how everyone spent weeks trying to find Aang and the Zuko came in and found it in a day. And then there's Iroh, walking in into a secret headquarters with his tea shop uniform XD
Iroh finally letting loose on Zuko and telling him what he needs to hear is one of my favorite moments of the show. So powerful. All of Zuko’s character development up until then built up perfectly to that moment

As a kid yes it was unclear. But they hinted so many times. He said he chose his own fate, they said he’d be fine and toph said they were lying. Katara even tried to heal him and realize that she couldn’t.

Jet is dead. He won’t show up again and the point of that scene when toph said “he’s lying” is to confirm he is dead with out actually showing too much cause the show was shown to kids.

Jet & Zuko -- I so love that they brought Jet back as a kind of foil to Zuko. Two boys who suffered traumatic violence at a young age and then found themselves caught up in lifestyles of violence that distorted who they could truly be. Jet's eventual conscription by the Dai Li and death by Long Feng to me tell such an honest story about how young men around the world are pulled into systems of violence from gangs to militaries (including child soldiers). Zuko seems to have a fighting chance because he has someone like Uncle Iroh invested in him.

About jet being possibly Dead, You know it is really unclear
I read somewhere that when long shot pointed his bow outward it was a compromise, he was actually meant to be pointing it at Jet to put him out of his misery hence “he’s our leader we’ll take care of him” but the network didn’t allow it as they deemed it too dark. Understandably I might add.
Jet got hurt. When Long shot points the arrow at the door, it was actually meant to be him putting one in Jet’s head to put him out of his misery but Nickelodeon couldn’t show that. So they showed it as a last stand. This show was being made live as it aired. The creators were very aware of their audience.
I remember the first time I saw jets death scene when it first aired on TV (I was 14 years old at the time) and the second toph said "he's lying" I cried and then seeing smellerbee crying made me cry even more.

Guys.....he's CHASING THE AVATAR TO TAKE HIM TO OZAI SO HE CAN GO....HOME! Same reason he was chasing him in Season 1. The reason hasn't changed....Zuko's been changing...sort of against his own will....and the circumstances have changed. But this isn't hard - he's tired of being exiled from his own country. He wants to return to his dad, his friends, and his home. Yes, his dad is abusive, but try to imagine being kicked out of your own home....having your life ripped away from you at 13 years old....you underplay the entire conflict! The logistics of capturing Appa, getting him out of the prison, and somehow using him to lure Aang into a situation where he can get him back to the Fire Nation....or to his sister or Fire Nation territory....IS foolish....or even impossible....but the why...the why makes sense.

Brian and Mike (the creators) wanted Longshoot to mercy kill Jet with his arrow but Nickelodeon said it was too dark for a kids show so they did the “he’s lying” thing instead and showed Longshot pointing his bow and arrow towards the entrance. That was confirmation that Jet died. It’s amazing how this show can give us a character that is interesting but not major and then make us feel so bad when he dies.

In the original presentation of this episode, the bow was supposed to be pointed at Jet, implying that he was put down. It was however changed due to age range limitations.

The reason why long shot took his arrow 🏹 getting ready to shoot it at the door way was actually a censor thing, he was originally supposed to point it down at jet to put him out of his misery but the people at nickelodeon didn't want that because it would have been to dark for a show that they were airing on there network for there audience ( kids ) even though it was never official shown it's basically confirmed that jet died.

Jet is quite dead. They leave it questionable because, even as dark as season 3 gets, this is still supposed to be a kid's show. You just can't show a teenager being straight up murdered by an evil adult. They don't even show the killing blow striking Jet. At the end the Freedom Fighters are sacrificing themselves to buy time for Aang and the crew.

The brainwashing typically works is that the victim is subjected to some kind of stimulus that makes them vulnerable to suggestion, so like bright lights moving in a pattern, pendulum swinging back and forth, electric shocks, etc. While they are mentally vulnerable the person doing the brainwashing will plant ideas into their head by speaking throughout the process. One of the main things that someone might plant in a brainwashing victim is a trigger work or phrase, that way whenever they hear those specific words being said there brainwashing will reactivate and cause them to act in specific way. This works regardless of who says them. In this case when Jet or Ju Dee were beginning to act their normal selves long Fang would use the trigger phrase to refresh the brainwashing.
Zuko never once struggled with knowing what he wants which makes that scene with Iroh less impactful. Zuko never was like "I want to capture the Avatar because someone told me to". His first priority was always to be able to return home and being acknowledged by his father.
Iroh never once communicated about Zukos goals or challenged him in his beliefs about the fire nation. Iroh sees things as black and white, good and evil, even though he should know better.
I'm pretty sure the writers confirmed that Jet did die.

Nickelodeon is really strict about showing or referencing death in their shows, which is something these show runners had to work around several times. If they want to kill off a character like Jet they have to keep it grey and unclear. In the first draft they were going to have Long Shot draw his bow and aim it at Jet before cutting away, but they had to change it so he's aiming at the door

I know this is old but I always tell people to skip those "previously on" parts. They weren't always a part of the show unless it was part two of a two part episode, and reminding you of certain plot points from the past going into the episode is kind of spoilery because it alerts you on what to be on the lookout for.
