How to Summarize (with examples)

A summary is a shorter version of the original. When you write a summary you should: read the text, scan for the main points, read it again, check that your information is correct and then write the summary. It is important to know how to summarize written material. Watch this video to learn how.

Is the main idea a statement or a phrase? If it's a phrase then it is a topic right? So for the first paragraph, the main idea should be that people in different age groups require different amounts of sleep. The supporting points or parts of the focus are general information. Is this a correct view?

Look for the topic sentence of the paragraph or the thesis statement in an essay. Identify the topic, try to summarize in your own words what the passage is saying, and look for repeating ideas. This should help you to find the main ideas of a passage. Hope this helps.
