  • Baugnez 44 Historical Center - Last look at the museum before permanently closing.
    The Historical center close to Malmedy is one of the more interesting ones in the area, mainly of the horrific historical Malmedy "incident" ( which has to be censored because you can't talk about history that's sensitive) that happened only 200 meters from the Museum.
    The museum had great lighted exhibitions, with information in multiple languages, nothing is overly dark like a lot of modern museums have to be today and you will see really beautiful set up dioramas.
    Big con of this museum is that it's only open for 2 days from Saturday and Sunday and the theme park experience set ups, with a lot of sound effects and nonsense, especially the one of the Malmedy "incident, I have some feelings on.
    The museum also displayed a lot of fake equipment, and I mean really obvious reproduced stuff, it doesn't bother me all that much, but I known that some of you in the comments can't stand re-pro stuff.
    But I think that some of the cons and limited opening time would eventually lead to it's eventually closing.

    I was fortunate to visit this museum in May 2010 and it had very few visitors when I was there. The lifesize dioramas really captured a possible moment back in 44 and even the reproductions demonstrated what the soldier's equipment was like. I told my German friends who live near Aachen about it, but they didn't seem interested and really had not much of an idea about the Battle of the Bulge. They originally thought I was going down there to visit the Hohe Fenn...ie. Elsenborn Ridge/Skyline Drive. I toured many of the Bulge sites, but I really regret I didn't go to the Hürtgenwald which is very close to Aachen, but it didn't occur to me then and family wasn't really into battlefields.

    It's the perfect stormy day to take a stroll through a museum. Thanks.

    Great video, thank you for taking the time and effort to put it all together. Sad that the locals had very little idea about what happened, schools that don't teach history in Germany, US, or anywhere are only allowing history to repeat itself. The reproductions are necessary for museums since most material of any kind breaks down over time.

    I assume we get informed what happened to the exibits in the museum. I know that all the exibits of the victory museum got scatterded all over the place. Too bad, Everytime i was in Baugnez, the museum was closed.

    The museum looks great but the history very depressing back to a very harsh era

      I think the museum is also trying to reflect the depressing nature of the history surrounding this place.

    I am confused. Is the museum already closed? If yes why? Where are the exhibits now? Do you recommend a other museum near the german/belgian border? I heard there is a museum called plateau 44

      From what I heard is that most of the collection is sold during an auction and to militaria sellers and collectors.

    Thank you for posting this video, it's very sad this museum is closing, or closed already, I'm going to miss it on my next trip to Belgium.
    Do you know what is going to happen to all the objects, equipment, weapons, etc ? Are they going or planning to merge with another museum?
    Regards from Alberta, Canada.

    Why was it closed down, also it mentioned lots of fake items? What will happen to the collection.

    • @PanzerPicture
      @PanzerPicture  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of conflicting stories on why it closed, but seeing that numerous items disappeared over the years I would say it closed down because of money.
      Most of the collection was also sold after this.

      @@PanzerPicture that's pretty sad, i went there on november 27 2022 (on my 25th birthday) with my parents and we had a great day visiting the ardennes region for traces of world war 2 , the only critics i had about the malmedy museum is that some of their items on display looked like reproduction like that it was never issued could be also, example the kriegsmarine feldbluse on entrance of the museum , there's even still paint on the buttons... and some of the displays were not lit , like the M29 weasel and the barn diorama were not at all illuminated on my visit, i see that on yours it was, so i suspect it was some technical issue or someone who forgot to switch the light on...

      @@yomamabelgium4123 I found it to be just another workplace for people where like you said somebody forgot to turn on the lights and what I found in the entire building, with the restaurant, museum and gift shop, that there were young randoms working there that had no interest in the subject, so everything felt like a business. And looks like the business was done and sold of to the next guy that wants to make a profit out of this stuff.

      @@PanzerPicture yeah when we got our entry to the museum it was a student worker , i found nothing bad tho as i would dream to work in a museum as a history passionate... i hope the person taking over is somewhat smarter and not a monkey and making it some commercial stuff, so much stuff is commercialised, i remember few years ago i could go to jacks woods near bastogne but now they put a whole fence system and i don't agree on people making a living of showing just a hole in the ground claiming it's original foxholes while something and someone tells me they are not the original foxholes but a whole puppetshow basically, i understand they would put a fencing system to keep out vandals and people with bad intentions but making it an attraction is not what i agree on

    • @PanzerPicture
      @PanzerPicture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You see that a lot in the Ardennes area, they really over commercialize everything and make a puppetshow out of a lot of stuff, just like the Foy fakes holes, and you pretty much know that it's about money.

    I still find this museum to be to dark, it's like everything is set in a nighttime setting and it's so unpleasant, why are museum allergic to natural light? Or just light in general.

    • @easynovember5423
      @easynovember5423 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rare or original artifacts are tagged and tracked, which means there are stipulations as to when and how they are and can be displayed. One of these stipulations pertains to the amount of exposure to UV light an object can be exposed too. Since UV rays, whether natural or artificial can cause a specimen to deteriorate. This is why light levels in many museums are kept low.

    • @thundercheck3691
      @thundercheck3691 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@easynovember5423 that's load of nonsense, because you have light blocking UV for glass, you also have lights that don't produce UV. I know this because museum that hire people that know how to do lights do this and are not overly dark, this is just a choice of style.

    • @easynovember5423
      @easynovember5423 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thundercheck3691 You are wrong: we annually have to have an independent team of specialist with testing equipment come into our museum to specifically check and measure our light levels, test for toxicity (such as asbestos or lead) and radioactivity. You cannot keep an artifact enclosed in glass, no matter of what kind, for long periods due to humidity changes. If you do then the artifact has to be removed periodically, which can lead to further damage and deterioration. I don't care who you know, since I work for an Air Force museum on their restoration projects and have assisted with these steps.

Pff, funny that museums like Bovington, Imperial war museum, Overloon, Munster, Saumur, Airborne Museum Bastogne, Eglise, Oosterbeek, Brussel, and Verdun all have great naturel lighted displays without a problem, but in your opinion everything needs to be pitch black in some new museums and that's not a choice?

      @@thundercheck3691 None of the museums you list would meet the accreditation standards set forth in the Alliance of Museums Standards and best practices. And don't really qualify, they are not teaching museums, provide free admissions to the public, maintain an active ongoing outreach program to the public they serve: nor do they meet the requirements as custodians or as a repository of national or international artifacts of significance. Under the standards mentioned they don't meet the expectations to be even considered a museum. They are place to make money, thats all!
