PC-24 - The Super Versatile Jet Landing on Grass Runway

  • Fano Airfield in the Marche region of Italy offers optimum test conditions: Pilatus spent one week there in July 2018 testing the PC-24’s landing and take-off capabilities on the airfield’s unmade dirt/grass runway.
    From the outset, the PC-24 was designed for “off road” operations. Its outstanding performance on short unmade runways opens up an incredible degree of flexibility and new opportunities. The PC-24 provides access to almost twice as many airports worldwide compared to other jets currently available on the market. The outstanding flexibility of the PC-24 opens the door on an enviable spectrum of possibilities - whether as a business jet, ambulance aircraft or for other special missions. All this makes it a Super Versatile Jet, an aircraft designed to fulfil a wide variety of individual mission profiles.

    This aircraft is going to do very well in Canada, we have thousands of rough strips. If it does well on ice, snow and cold it’s doubly a winner

      It's very weird to see western planes do this but a lot of Russian and soviet jets are build from the factory to do this without problems. There are very small jets like this from yakovlev for example but also very big jets like the il-62 and most transport aircraft from antonov that can do this. They landed an old il62 in a field here in Germany to put it in a museum and I don't mean a grass or dirt runway it was literally a field...edit: here's a video th-cam.com/video/3EP2fgosJ0A/w-d-xo.html

  • @billhart9832
    @billhart9832 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Impressive, however, what special measures or materials protect the underside of the flaps from debris kicked up from unpaved surfaces? The PC-12, having substantially more ground clearance isn't subject to the same effects.

  • @nimbuskhannk627

    Great aircraft, I have always wanted to see a jet that could slow down and land on rough strips. PC24 seems to have nailed it. However, the undercarriage seems a bit low for a rough strip specialist... Or is it just me? Also there seems to be a big curve under the fuselage where the wings join, maybe that's a slow speed lifting design spec?
    Cheers and I wish I had the cash for a PC24!

Since you have invented "SVJ" Classification, why dont you make a new product with 4000NM transcontinental range with these landing capabilities and also disrupt the towing tug , like you did with the Ground Power Units with the Unique QPM. Imagine a JET that can reverse itself. You would'nt be Pilatus if you settled for less and your order volumes speak for it. Love the PC-24 , Waiting for a PC-48 thats even more badass. What makes this as opposed to a Citation more adapted to rough surfaces? Beefier suspension? tires? How much weight does this add that could take away from useful load capacity? Not sure if this ability is really useful in a private jet so if there’s a toll paid to have it, it might not be worth it. Maybe I won’t get one of these for my private jet collection. When I have one, that is. 😢

      Roberto R. MOLA my thoughts precisely.
      It'll blow away the landing site. Literally.

    • @RobertoRMOLA
      @RobertoRMOLA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      S1baar I would say it'll scrape the surface, because the engine has blown what the landing gear ripped out from the surface. "Conveniently", the outside mounted camera showed only the beggining and the final moments of landing gear rolling... High pressure tires on earth or grass runways? Only for eventualities, in my humble opinion.

    • @S1baar
      @S1baar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roberto R. MOLA aren't high pressure tires bad for paved surfaces?
      Edit: I meant unpaved! Autocorrect...

    • @RobertoRMOLA
      @RobertoRMOLA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      S1baar Low pressure tires are larger to produce a larger "print" on the surface and distribute the aircraft weight on a larger area. Or doubling the number of wheels/tires to produce the same effect. The same aircraft with smaller higher pressure tires will exert a higher pressure on the surface. There are tables for each aircraft to determine if a particular place is suitable for its operation. The parameters computed are aircraft weight and number of tires, tire pressure (ACN - Aircraft Classification Number) and runway capacity (PCN - Pavement Classification Number). Concrete and asphalt prepared runways, taxiways and aprons can withstand such high pressure tires, but earth and grass runways cannot provide a stable and steady condition over a certain period of time. Rain season and other nature factors can modify PCN. A better ACN would provide the ONLY way to guarantee a safe operation on an unprepared runway. Example: Air India ordered their first Airbus A-320 with 4 wheel bogies on main landing gear, doubling the number of tires and the weight distribution because movement area on Indian airports were considered too bad for "conventional" gear A-320s.

    I agree it’s a beautiful machine. However there’s a couple things I’m concerned about: 1- it sure rides low. A little too low for me if I had to land on rough terrain. I’d be seriously concerned about the fuselage. 2- single wheel front landing gear is a little concerning too. I would rather have double for more weight support and ruggedness. Other than that she’s gorgeous!
