I’m so glad you got ahold of this machine. I’ve knew this thing is amazing but sadly too few people tap into its true sound design potential. In your hands though, we can all finally hear what’s capable of when a real sound designer with good taste gets a hold of it.
It is definitely one of my favorite synths ever. I love the keybed, I love the look, I dunno, it's a beautiful sounding synth. FM synthesis is amazing and this device was really well thought out.
It starts at 7:04 for anyone else interested :) Thanks - I quite loved those save rooms. Such peaceful, yet haunting music for what was right outside those rooms. So good.
Thanks. Yeah, I agree. I sort of think the SY FM synths are among the best. I love how they sound and actually like the interface. I wish I didn’t have to press exit every time I do something, that’s about my only gripe. Truth is, the secret has been out for years, but people want knobby synths (myself included), and no one wants to bother programming this. Personally, I quite like creating patches. I’m going to probably work on creating a template patch bank that gives all the raw waveforms (including a PWM patch), so it’s easier to start editing with.
Probably the best SY77 demo out there soundwise. With the little hint that with eventide almost anything sounds good. However thought it was funny to hear that quirky old FM brass which one would find in all these PSS and PSR Keyboards of the 80s.
I love it. The whole feel, the sound, the look. I know it doesn’t “look” iconic like the DX7, but I really think it’s the best FM synth out there, maybe behind the sy99, but that one is too big.
Yeah, I don't know actually. I'm buying a DX7s on Monday (it doesn't work - hopefully I can get it working!). We'll see how they are to edit. If I don't like it, it won't be a big loss. The keybeds on these things are fantastic by the way.
@@MIDERA Right on. Good luck with the DX7. Looking forward to hearing it. Keybeds are a whole other topic. I'd like to just have one good MIDI keyboard to play all my modules. But I can't find a good one that doesn't have a bunch of crap I never use built into it. And last time my main keyboard was also a synth that synth broke (Deepmind 12) and I was without a keyboard for a few weeks. So I'm currently using a throwaway MIDI keyboard and hesitant to buy a keyboard synth. I supposed if all my synths had keyboards I'd have redundancy and no problems. But then I'd need three times as much space...
There’s a programming guide I used to figure out how to use the algorithms to create saw, square, triangle waves... can’t think of the name of it, but I can post a link if you want to see it, it really helped me figure it out. Also, if you can figure out how to just use a few of the envelopes and set everything else to zero (there are too many rates and levels for me) it’ll get easier. Oh, and realize that you can copy and paste envelopes and filter settings by pressing the copy button - that saved me so much time making patches!
MIDERA Thanks, that would be great if you could share that link. I always end up just modifying sounds I load into it and never really get far. Sure they sound nice, but would be so much more rewarding knowing you’d created your own from scratch. For sure there’s lots of potential when you know what you’re doing with it !
Let me know how it turns out. I don't know why, but after reading through, FM started making a lot more sense to me. I always felt like algorithms were these black boxes, how does one decide which algorithm to use? Well, thinking of each part of an algorithm as a block to create simple waveforms, it just seemed less complex. A simple 2-stack can give you a nice sawtooth (thicker than analog waves, I think), then if you have 3 of them side by side, you've got a nice 3 oscillator patch! Anyway, good luck!
Just got my sy77. Technically I have two because the first one I bought had the end cap broken in shipping from Japan and they just told me to keep it and refunded my money. So I bought another one and am now looking for the end cap for the other one

@@MIDERA I’m about to add a TG77 to my fm arsenal of dx7ii, tx81z, and tx816. I,was kinda bummed that the rack TG doesn’t have the sequencer of the SY. Am I missing much?
@@johnmeroney2007 I can't figure out the sequencer in the SY77 at all. Maybe mine is screwed up? I don't know. I hate it. I would've preferred an arpeggiator in it. No, you are absolutely not missing anything there. But the feel of the keys and the weight of the instrument? That would be lost with the rack unit. In my opinion - I'd get rid of the DX7ii and get the SY77, pare down a bit. I had, at one point, a DX7ii and sold it. It did everything the SY77 could do, but less. You have the TX816 for truly DX7 sounds. DX7ii is unnecessary in the world of FM compared to the SY77. Original DX7 is different, worth it on its own, but the middle child - nah. Just my opinion. And thanks :) I appreciate that!!!
@@MIDERA yeah. I’m looking into a SY99 actually. If I end up getting one I’ll let you know how the sequencer is. Currently I’m editing the 816 with the dx7ii, so I’ll hold onto it for a while, as I am also in a collecting mood for fm synths as I’m concentrating on that. (Former trombone player and euro rack person). Perhaps I can get enough chops to program via a SysEx via sexed, but I am also wanting to stick to hardware, S much as I respect use of the computer for music making. Definitely want to return to modular at some point. I’m just interested in all the unique processes of synthesizers and synth technologies in general. The main computer based synthesis I’m into is granular synthesis and iOS apps seem so right for that.
where can we find all these presets? thx. they sound so great but hard to know wich part is waveform and wich part is operator... some soundss are obviously FM synthesis but ohters prests sound very close to old analog synthesizer...
Hi, I created all of these patches. I think a few, like 2 or 3 are manipulated presets, which were mostly using AWM, but almost all of the sounds use FM to create the sounds. I’m planning to release a patch set, but I feel slightly guilty selling it based on this video because I used external reverb. I suppose I could see if my original video and audio is available and re-release this without reverb. Otherwise, I would need to record all 64 presets again, film it, upload it, then release the sounds for no one to purchase… at least that’s been my experience with releasing sound banks 🤣
Do the keys of the SY77 have springy-plasticy rebound or semi-weighted feel? Please let me know whenever you can. I had an SY99 and loved the keybed on that, but sold it out of necessity. I was thinking of getting an SY77 to fill the void of the SY99's departure, but wonder if the keybed is the same or not...
I'm not sure if they're the same unfortunately. I would say semi-weighted fell. It's probably my second favorite keybed I've ever used, with the virus kb as my number 1, but... I could have sworn the SY99 had a better keybed. I could be completely wrong though as I've never used one. The SY99 has some benefits though, such as allowing the import of samples without a secondary device (like the waveblade), a way to sync up the filters better too, and better FX - in other words, make sure you know the differences or you might be sorely disappointed.
@@MIDERA Thanks for the reply. I have this feeling that they may use the same keybed, and only differ in number of notes. As a former SY99 user, I would classify its action as semi-weighted and akin to that of an upright piano (but a little bit softer on impact). I liked the feedback and felt I could dig into it more. Sound-wise, I think they are very similar if not the same in most areas of activity. I have read the effects of the SY77 being the main issue of quality versus those of the SY99 (something to do with phase cancellation). I don't remember ever using the effects of the SY99 much, if at all. Using external effects processors seems like the best route for both ultimately. Some say the filters differ, and some say they are the same. I am not sure. If the keybed is the same, then I think I wouldn't mind these differences of procedure in regard to samples much because I can still hear the massive ability in the SY77 that I heard in the SY99, as they both share the same quality of being a hybrid of AFM and AWM2 synthesis. Those thick, massive sounds really satisfy; feels very analog sometimes. I read in your SY77 article from your website you bought yours for something like $260.00 in pretty much mint condition. What a deal! I am looking at one that also is 'pretty much mint', only in need of a floppy belt replacement, for $399.00. With respect to economic inflation over the years and also increaseed valuation of the synth, $399 might be today's good deal. I am still thinking hard on it though, especially along the lines of what you said about the possibility of being sorely disappointed. I'd rather have the SY99 again, but it would cost a lot more and who knows when one in excellent condition is going to be offered up. The values of both the SY99 and SY77 have definitely increased by a range of $200-500 over the past 7 years since I sold the SY99, I've seen.
Hi ollimoore - thanks. I used s programming guide on the internet to help my figure out what to do. See my comment to Craig about some tips and tricks, I can also find the link to what I used and post it for you, it’s pretty easy to find if you search for it. Basically, once I learned how algorithms worked and how to get them to function as waveforms, it became a bit less daunting. I think it would be hard for me to go back to a DX7 because you don’t have freely assignable feedback settings, which help really shape sounds.
Been a secret lurker on this synth for some time. Prices for it are getting low. Kinda hard to justify it, since I already have a Korg DS-8 and numerous fm software synths. You make it sing, no doubt!
I’ve never used the DS-8, and it seems great. But the differences seem pretty massive. The SY77 is a 6op, which allows the use of samples to act as modulators. However, I’ve heard the DS-8 is pretty easy to use, so there is that. Thanks!!
Yeah the DS-8 is pure simplicity to use. It’s a really elegant interface for editing FM quickly, but it only has 4 operators and a handful of algos. The SY-77 certainly has it beat on features. NOW I WANT ONE
Hey, nothing wrong with using the synth that gets you the sounds you want and need. I think the only thing that would bother me is not having feedback on all the operators (or at least enough). I guess I don't exactly know how the DS8 functions, so maybe it does feedback differently than the Yamaha's.
Some of those effects really bring out the effect sounds, but not really the keyboard original unique sounds that it was created for to originally sound.
Sorry, your keyboard skills are great. Those first pads sound beautiful and you use them with musicality, very ambient, very David Sylvian. I loved everything. If I buy one of these used, is it possible to share patches?
@@MIDERA this video definitely inspired me. I also like the idea of playing synths that aren't as mainstream like the dx7. I'm also going to get a oberheim matrix 6 which is awesome analogue if you know of!! Great playing BTW.
The piano patch at 7:05 makes my heart sing. So nostalgic. What settings does that use? It sounds like the piano AWM sample being a carrier for a sine wave pitch mod type deal, with reverb…? But I don’t know there’s something magical about it. 🙂✨
The patch at 19:15 is beautiful. Any chances you would share it ? Just got a sy77 and I'm far from your understanding of this synth. If it's not no worries ! Great sounds man, bravo
Hi Demetris - thank you. All the sounds were things I programmed, that second sound was “Sky Burn” some odd name I gave it... I guess it must sound very similar to piano5? Thanks!!
MIDERA For sure. I used to own an EX5, FS1R and DX7, but the SY has always been on my drool list. I have a JX3P and MPC1000 now so I feel like this will be a fantastic combo. Love your stuff man. Would totally be into collaborating at some point if you’re into that. I have stuff on Spotify under Cap Ferrat “Ceremony”
Awesome, yeah a collaboration would be great :) with a kid and work I find it difficult to manage my music, FYI. What made you sell the EX5 and FS1R? I had a DX7s but I felt it was nowhere near as interesting as my sy77. The original DX7 is at least easily serviceable and I like the look of it and size of it over the later models.
Oh dear - that was the only non FM patch in there - it's the on-board AWM piano sounds. Holy crap, now I feel like I should make an FM piano on that level... that would be epic. I read up on creating piano sounds, and wow, it's complex!
I have not… I do have an almost full set though, perhaps I will. I think some of them are just called “init” patches so I’ll need to rename them. I have started a website with my thoughts on the gear I own, and believe I have the SY77 completed… Midera-artist.com
@@MIDERA Yes, I found your review and really enjoyed it. I got my SY77 a few weeks ago, and am about to complete my first set of patches, but they are not as good as yours. Such an amazing machine.
Great video, great sounds, accept that silly tool riff! Your keyboard skills may be limited (so are mine) but your sound creator qualities are awesome. Is there a possibility to convince you for a video on sound shaping? I will definitely pay for it!
What do you mean exactly about 'sound shaping'? And what's wrong with Tool? They're probably my favorite band - but it's ok if you don't like them. Nothing wrong with that. My keyboard skills are very limited for sure. Thanks :)
this synth sounds incredible.. is there a computer/iPad editor to edit this beauty nowadays?? I heard once that the patches cannot be transferrable via sysx?? Thnaks
I think they can all be edited via sysex. I use Patchbase (though I had issues with the SY77 with it, but it should work). I believe there are computer programs as well. I also am using the PL88 (which is amazing and you should get it) which allows the transfer of banks to and from it. Check that out for sure!

MIDERA hey, i think i have found one on sale! can you kindly share what things i should check before purchase? How are the outputs of this synth though? do i need a preamp? Hope these are not as bad as my tx81z... man, i have just fell in love with the tone of this synth after watching your videos.. :) Cheers!
Heh, thanks! I actually found a patch on the TX81z that sounded identical to the Wolfenstein 3D stuff - For years I thought I'd remake the track using it, but I didn't. So my many-mistake version will have to do for now! Thanks gattobus :D
I am - although I don't use it as much because, unfortunately, I have... too many synths and don't know how to get rid of them -_- The SY77 is one that would stay. It is one of the best that I have.
What do you mean "sound cards"? I just used the SY77. Are you referring to data cards or patch cards? I designed all the sounds that you hear, if that's what you're referring to. I always think of 'Sound card' as that thing you install in your computer. Like a soundblaster pro, which I think I was lucky enough to own back in the day.
@@MIDERA As I understand it, there are 3 methods of data storage on the SY77, the floppy drive, the waveform disk and the sound (patch) disk. I mean to ask what waveform disk you are using, especially since you said you used a waveform sample for the piano patch which I really love the sound of.
Gotcha. Yes, everything is stock samples, the waveforms that are on the disk. However, I used it with RCM, so it’s actually modulating an FM carrier, which is probably why it sounds the way it does.
@@MIDERA What I was unclear on is the name of the disk you are using. If i'm not mistaken those disks do not come with the unit stock, so it could be any one of the official disks that yamaha produced. Just to be clear I'm talking about the patch at 7:04, not sure if we are on the same page.
Hey justplainodd - just to be clear: I have no disks at all. No floppy's, waveforms, soundpatch disks. Nothing. Whatever is in my unit is all I've got :/ I looked at the preset and it is called "Dyna piano" and the 'wave' says it's "PRESET 1 PIANO" - if that's any help.

Just got my AK after a long await sale of my A4. Thanks for the inspiration! Your getting some killer sounds from that beast.
Very nice! I LOVE the AK so much. It’s amazing.
Great video. Killer synth. Phenomenal considering how cheap it still is (at least until the secret gets out)
Very nice work, everything is just beautiful! I'm still a rookie on my TG77, this is great inspiration.
+10 for the Wolfenstein tune! 😎
Cool TG77 :) Very great synth for sure. Thanks!
”The Wolfenstein tune”, is that when they play Horst Wessel-lied at 11:20?
Probably the best SY77 demo out there soundwise. With the little hint that with eventide almost anything sounds good. However thought it was funny to hear that quirky old FM brass which one would find in all these PSS and PSR Keyboards of the 80s.
I love that old fm brass sound, reminds me of Wolfenstein 3D.
Thanks :)
Absolutely Beautiful.
Thank you!
i wasn't expecting the sudden Wolfenstein 3D tunes lmao, great patches!
Hah, yeah, I loved those games. I first heard patches like these on the TX81z and knew I had to recreate them! Thanks :)
Beautiful sounds.
Thanks!
Every time you play a synth I want to buy it. You are so good man!!!!!!
Hey thanks. This synth is one to look for for sure. Love this synth.
Fabulous synth and wonderful demo, thanks for this !
Thanks Eric!
you should definitely upload your patches! I just finished reading your review as well. solid work!
Thanks. I may do that if I think about it soon :)
Great to see you. Beautiful tones. The SY77 sounds fantastic.
I love it. The whole feel, the sound, the look. I know it doesn’t “look” iconic like the DX7, but I really think it’s the best FM synth out there, maybe behind the sy99, but that one is too big.
@@MIDERA Looks like it's probably easier to design patches on too (hopefully).
NICE with the save room theme!!!!!!
Thanks!
great! and great review too!
Thanks!
Sounds awesome man. I love my SY77 it’s a beast , just wish I could make it sound this good ! I’m using Strymon BigSky reverb.
For sure there’s lots of potential when you know what you’re doing with it !
chrisarndt.de/files/yamaha/SY%20Programming%20v0.40.pdf
See page 15 and up, really follow that WHILE at your unit!
MIDERA thanks so much, that’s awesome. I’ll definitely check this out later today and experiment.
Anyway, good luck!
gorgeous piano tone at 2:49, dude. well done.
Thanks! I thought it was the actual PCM piano - but that's a 'pad' type sound I created myself :) Thanks again!
Keep making more patches for this!
I will (eventually)! Thanks :)
Beautiful Synth and patches demo , good 👍

Just got my sy77. Technically I have two because the first one I bought had the end cap broken in shipping from Japan and they just told me to keep it and refunded my money. So I bought another one and am now looking for the end cap for the other one

Excellent patches, nice melodies! I want to buy SY77 too. Its a really great synth workstation, sounds so nice.
I found these sounds on my TX81z so I wanted to try to replicate it, and got pretty close :)
The SY77 is great!
It's a great synth.... I've got two of them!

@@MIDERA I’m about to add a TG77 to my fm arsenal of dx7ii, tx81z, and tx816. I,was kinda bummed that the rack TG doesn’t have the sequencer of the SY. Am I missing much?
@@MIDERA Also, I’ve been really enjoying your channel the past year or so that I came across it.
Lovely sounds, gotta learn how to program my SY99 properly someday. Tool is great too!
I think it would be hard for me to go back to a DX7 because you don’t have freely assignable feedback settings, which help really shape sounds.
chrisarndt.de/files/yamaha/SY%20Programming%20v0.40.pdf
@@MIDERA that sounds really interesting, thanks for the reply, the link would be much appreciated as well if you can be bothered.
Page hadn’t updated, apologies and thanks
MIDERA Yeah the terminology is different. On the DSA it’s called “timbre”
Hows the weight? Is it bearable for regular gigging?
11:41 is this a wolfenstein reference or an attempt at fashwave?
What do you think?
Some of those effects really bring out the effect sounds, but not really the keyboard original unique sounds that it was created for to originally sound.
Ok.
Sorry, your keyboard skills are great. Those first pads sound beautiful and you use them with musicality, very ambient, very David Sylvian. I loved everything. If I buy one of these used, is it possible to share patches?
Thanks Nuno!
I could probably share some patches if interested (and depending on whether I kept them). Cheers.

The piano patch at 7:05 makes my heart sing. So nostalgic. What settings does that use?
It sounds like the piano AWM sample being a carrier for a sine wave pitch mod type deal, with reverb…? But I don’t know there’s something magical about it. 🙂✨
I THINK it’s 100% AWM… I’ll have to check. Thanks!

I think 7:04 is the best FM keys patch I've ever heard.

I have started a website with my thoughts on the gear I own, and believe I have the SY77 completed…

this synth sounds incredible.. is there a computer/iPad editor to edit this beauty nowadays?? I heard once that the patches cannot be transferrable via sysx?? Thnaks
I think they can all be edited via sysex. I use Patchbase (though I had issues with the SY77 with it, but it should work). I believe there are computer programs as well. I also am using the PL88 (which is amazing and you should get it) which allows the transfer of banks to and from it. Check that out for sure!

@@MIDERA Nice
@@MIDERA I see. Having too many synths is never unfortunate though...
Wow! What sound cards are you using?
Nothing. Whatever is in my unit is all I've got :/
I looked at the preset and it is called "Dyna piano" and the 'wave' says it's "PRESET 1 PIANO" - if that's any help.
@7:07 Sounds like "should have known better" by Richard Marx
It's actually the 'safe room' theme from Resident Evil. But that's interesting - it does sort of have that sound from the beginning.
11:20 Die Straßen frei, für schwarze batalionen... 💪👏😊
I’m told this isn’t exactly a song I should have played… but it was in the game wolfenstein which is where I got it from.

Should you ever be in Germany, please don't play the song at 11:20 there. It's called "Horst Wessel Lied" and is strictly forbidden since 1945...
Yeah - I know - I played it because the sound is almost identical to that in the game “Wolfenstein 3D”. It’s the intro song.
Here’s a link to the track from the game: th-cam.com/video/fyjGIOZMfXM/w-d-xo.html
However - I definitely appreciate the heads up!!!
How interesting. It’s forbidden because it was essentially the Nazis “theme song”? Wolfenstein is one of my favorites.
Well - it totally makes sense that it’s banned because of that. Also, the guy who wrote it - Wessel, was a total douchebag, so, after reading up on it further, I sorta wished I hadn’t played it, but I love that video game.
But with everything going on, especially in the US with the rise of Nationalism, I’d hate to be thought of as part of that (very large) group. It’s disgusting... so, yeah, perhaps it was in poor taste.
Eventide is always better for synths. Strymon sounds like plastic and turns any gear into a vst.
Hmm - that hasn't been my experience based on the demos of the Strymon gear, but only from online demos.
