Vanilla Skyrim is wonderfully vanilla. It's far too simple. Morrowind, Oblivion, Dark Souls, Divinity:Original Sin, Kingdoms of Amalur and so many other RPGs outclass it when it comes to actually feeling like you're building a character worth talking about. You gain skills too easily, but the skills you gain don't make enough of a difference so it balances out in a really crappy way. It's balanced, that much is true, but it doesn't feel good. Nothing is hard to do. Hard to get. Nothing feels like it'll really impact your play-style. In those other games, you'll come across some weapon, piece of armor, or even a ring or something and think "Wow. I don't even *like* battle-axes/frost spells/whateverthefuck, but this thing is so good I can't *not* use it." Skyrim doesn't do that. You *always* have access to any way you want to play and that makes it *boring* . You don't *earn* it at all.
Alteration is a looooot of fun with the right mods. Kind of an interesting magic concept that's painfully underutilized in the base game beyond transmuting for crafting reagents.
