    The leads in Fortunate Son make so much more sense when you tune down and play in A as well. Great songwriting all around.

    this is the secret of Fogerty's sound...having rhythm and lead guitars using different chord shapes on most songs helps fill out the sound a lot. And different tuning forces that to happen.

    John Fogerty has a video of this posted last week playing with his family, and yeah he is playing it in E tuned down, and his son and daughter are using the usual open key of D chords. I saw John playing this on TV in the early seventies and had to spend about three weeks figuring out what the lead break was, once I saw how he was fingering some of it. John had a knack for writing simple songs that got people on their feet dancing, that even garage bands could pull off -well sort of anyway.

    Mate. Well done. You're right. I heard John in a TV interview tell the story of the broken head stock on the Black LP. It had happened backstage in Australia somewhere. He tells the story of the sound they got from the mixed inversions from 2 tunings because when the LP was repaired he was told to tune it down a full step to save the head stock from breaking again. In the end they got a sound which we all know and love so well.

    Fortunate Son is another one. When you hear the track, it’s clear that the lead guitar is playing the last two notes of
    the lead riff on one string - the 5th - while the song is actually in the key of G. PS ~ Love the Genesee sign! Had a
    few Genny’s back in the day, rolling through the great State of New York to and from gigs. When there WERE gigs,

    I only recently discovered that this was how CCR got their sound on some of their signature tunes. It's a really great idea to differentiate the two guitars and great a dynamic tension between the two players.

    This full step down tuning is used by John Fogerty on Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son and I think Run Through The Jungle, probably a few others too as well as Proud Mary of course! Great sound, it confounded me for years how he got that sound. Also when he played in standard tuning on that 3/4 size Rickenbacker 325 through a solid state Kustom amp is was an amazing sound too! Thats on Born On The Bayou, Green River etc.

  • @Alezcollection

    Damn, this is my first time hearing of this method. I was learning the song on guitar in standard tuning, but then was so confused when I heard the actual song itself, realizing my guitar playing alone didn't match the same tone. Now I see why hahah. Pretty cool

    Thanks for the explanation. John Fogerty has recently posted some really sweet videos playing old tunes with his kids that show exactly what you are showing here. I wondered why he wasn't playing the chords that his son was playing, and thanks to you, now I know.

    Almost an entire head shot. Damnitt, JJ!!! You're such a tease!!! 😂

    It sure makes it sound more interesting, having the different tunings. Tuning down sure helps with the bends too.

  • @natetheguitarkid
    @natetheguitarkid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Always liked hearing the low D string in this context (cleaner tone) as opposed to over distorted as most bands use it (not that i dont like that as well). The earliest instance ive noticed of it being used is Eddie Cochran on "Sweetie Pie" and "Sitting in the Balcony", though im sure its probably been done before him too. Velvet Underground used it on most of their songs too.

    • @jamesjames9275
      @jamesjames9275  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For this, all the strings are tuned down, not just the D.

    • @natetheguitarkid
      @natetheguitarkid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesjames9275 Yep, this is full step down. I was just singling out the low D because thats the only note you cant play in standard tuning (and the low D# note which would be an F in standard tuning).

    • @natetheguitarkid
      @natetheguitarkid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not entirely sure if Eddie would tune it down a full step or just drop D. You would hear the low D in his solos so could of been either/or. But with Fogerty its clear its a full step cause the barre chords he plays would be painful in DADGBE. And you can tell from watching him live

  • @terrywitzu7874
    @terrywitzu7874 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always wondered why more 2 guitar bands didn't do that. Always wanted to put together something like that myself. All of the best ideas are from the 60's. One of the last bands formed I insisted on a designated tambourine player. It worked even better than I though. Up next - re-introducing the 12-string electric. It's been missing for too long.

  • @barryjohnson2865

      well retune down and play some more songs that are in down tune. unless you don't have any in your playlist that you like to play..
      lot of times I go down to E flat for one song and then I decide well I got the guitar tuned out I'm just going to play a whole bunch of stuff that was in e-flat then eventually a couple days later tune it back up to standard or wherever.

    • @billyrayband
      @billyrayband 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      D tuning has a lot of advantages. Such as most cover band singers don't have the range needed. Playing those songs in D tuning lowers it enough that it is much easier to sing. Best to have two guitars because you really need to change setup in D tuning.
