Overloading an old rusty trailer, with an old rusty excavator and towing it with an old rusty truck. What could possibly go wrong? Great adventure, love old rusty things!!!
I'm betting the carb vapor locked due to heat from the heavy tow. Once it sat for a long time and cooled off, adding the gas to the carb enabled it to fire again. It's not an adventure until something goes wrong! Oh, and Falcon owes you dinner and a day at the spa.

Brings back memories of an epic trip when I was in my teens. We were hauling two van convoy of horse vans fully loaded with 6 horses apiece, about 20,000 lbs in each van, when the tranny failed in one of them. We were fortunate to coast into a median cop turnaround on I 684 just before the intersection with I 287, a huge intersection near White Plains NY. We shuttled one of the cars in our caravan to the local Sears to get some tools to try to get it operable, praying we could get it running before the tranquilizers ran out on one of the horses in the back. Managed to get it running on half of the gears, but we didn’t have low gear, which meant we couldn’t stop at the bottom of a hill because we wouldn’t have gearing to get up the hill without stalling out. Finally got to PA about 6 hours late.
You take a old crappy truck overloaded pulling a crappy old trailer. Putting everyone else on the road at danger. On a busy city express way making it even more dangerous for everyone. Then say you are loosing faith in humanity when the piece of crap breaks down in the middle of the expressway. I feel you were much more at fault than everyone else.
I bought a 1975 F250 to haul the largest Uhaul enclosed moving trailer with a houseful of furniture & appliances from BC to NS, Canada, about 2800 miles. The Ford never even burped, but further to Falcon's comment about fuel mileage I averaged 8 MPG and could actually see the gas needle moving as I drove. A great video adventure, Sam ! 👍👍👍
There's something about going on road trips to pick up cheap excavators. I drove 4 hours here in the UK on a similar quest and was dogged by intermittent overheating on my Landrover Defender. I made it home in the end complete with the load, but had many stops to let it cool down and top up with water. Well done for staying calm Sam, that was a pretty scary situation being dead in a live traffic lane. Glad you made it home safely.
Good job getting it in there. Sam you were the calm one in the situation on the highway which was very scary I’m sure. A friend in need is a friend indeed!
Back in 1979 I wanted to be a truck driver. Had to spend a week in some of the worse parts of NY. After surviving that, My dream of truck driver ended. Seeing what you both went through, showed me I made the right choice. I am happy you both survived it. I liked and shared. All my very best.

dumpster dive at a truckstop repair shop for some rubber mud flaps. Or a couple rolls of round baler straps/bands. Lay them down on the metal ramps so that the steel tracks have something to bite onto
I was on pins and needles when you guys were stuck right in the middle of that Expressway. Thank goodness you've made it back to New York and back still moving. Get on that sailboat and rest and chill !!😮
When I use to run those old Fords I would keep a electronic module,a fuel pump and a voltage regulator behind the seat..I had about ten of those 70s Fords.. Great trucks very reliable..Your friends truck is a real Beauty ..
Sam, this whole thing screamed sketchy from the get go. Bad decisions all over. Not sure your attraction to this character. You kids working so hard. Take this tip from an old man who has been moving all kinds of machinery for over 50 years. Always carry wood with you when you go on a mission like this. Steel tracks on steel ramps, and a steel floor need wood to stop from sliding.
The fact it's a truck towing weight its not rated for, on a trailer not rated for it, with ratchet straps not rated for it. If someone got hurt, he would be sued into another dimension. This is a really cool video. I bet neither one of you will forget the adventure you had getting this excavator, if eveything went perfect there would be nothing to remember. Thanks for filming this and sharing it!
should have picked up some old tires to drive on but you got it loaded anyway! I had a newer F-150 crap out like that on me when the fuel pump relay melted at a red light and had people backed up for a mile. Luckily I had a can of brake clean and a guy willing to stand on the bumper spraying it into the intake long enough to get it off the road :)
WOW! That was a very dangerous situation, that was the worst possible place to have the truck stop running. Being stopped under that overpass you were in a dark area , people coming in from the bright light had difficulty seeing you stopped there. It certainly is a miracle that you was not hit. That could have been a major catastrophe.. I would be interested in what the trucks gas gauge was reading , I ask that because I had 2 Fords like that one and both would run out of Gasoline at 1/4 of a tank. They had a gauge problem in those years. I am glad that you got back safe! Smart move Sam to have stayed inside the truck while it was broke down!
North Jersey traffic is almost always bad. I live in South Jersey and it's definitely easier to get around down here. Very lucky you guys didn't get hit! Glad you made it back to the park/ride safe at least. 👍👍👍
Yikes! That was some stressful ride. I was just about having a panic attack watching that break down. Lol The traffic, man. I’m glad you stayed in the truck. Either way, great video… just shows everyone that not everything goes smoothly! thanks for posting :)
Boy Sam, you sure had everyone on pins and needles with that sketchy recovery, glad you two made it back ok, repairing the excavator will probably make for some good videos, I will be waiting for the next episode.
back in the old days metal fuel lines would get hot and cause vapor lock and we would fix by placing wooden clothes pins on the fuel line to dissipate heat / or so we thought, may have just been the placebo effect LMAO
Wow Sam this episode is nerve wracking ! You guys are so lucky you weren’t hurt ! I’m glad everything worked out well , thank Goodness your both safe ❤️
I bought a Takeuchi with a locked up final drive. When I got it home, the drive was bone dry, and a few of the teeth had come off the gears, and ended up in the bottom locking it up. I got all of that out, it turned, so I filled it up with 90wt, and used it for several years before selling it.
That truck pulled well for the weight in the back.. you need to add “add a leaf spring” for added weight carrying.. get a larger radiator for that heavy hauling.. ..
Sam i was worried to Death for you stuck on the Highway with a bunch of ignorant drivers not giving you a break and slowing down some, but happy you are back in your own Rig, xoxo halifax Nova Scotia canada.
damn how i miss sailing. We only have 14" of ice and it prevents boating. The melting is going on, so in 5-6 weeks I can get my own boat on the water. greetings from Finland🇫🇮
Less then ideal situation on a few fronts, but one that was still a good deal on the excavator, two cool old truck, i have a 79 f250 too!, 3 u guys didnt get hurt while being broke down, and 4 you didnt get a ticket for being likely overweight, i call those all wins! Keep on keeping on!
You made it home alive! I thought played luck card with axle breaking at a parking lot but that was just the beginning of drama. Was that all legal with dump trailer capacity and truck ? It’s amazing weren’t fined out the kazoo and the cops didnt come down hard. Wow stuck in the middle lane on that crazy highway , the anxiety was palpable I was stressed, his mom better not see the video , but y’all were pretty chill all in all , I would of needed a change of drawers . What an ordeal !
Ah what it is to be young. Most things done on a shoe strap and hope :) I've been very lucky, bit like you in a way. My first car was a Renault Dauphin £40.00 in 1966. It did four successful trips to Hamburg from camp Hohne. then on the fifth it broke down on the Autobahn, I was in the second lane when it just died. I had enough clearance to get it onto the shoulder. My friend took the distributor cap off, then tried to work the startor motor, nothing. The rotor arm didn't turn ! Knackered ! Just then someone in a Glas (BMW engine) turned up and towed us, 1st to Soltau and two garages, who were unable to help. then he towed us (4 of us) back to camp. He wouldn't accept any gas coupons, but said, do this for someone else if you can, then went ! Talk about luck, the car went straight to scrap !
Sam - 3 things. 1. I'm a big fan who's followed you from the very start! 2. What you're doing at the 22 minute mark is just so dangerous! A lurch forward, a mis-pressed lever, the trailer collapsing & the excavator tipping suddenly forward or any number of thngs would have seen you crushed, possibly to death! & 3. Why aren't you part of Andrew's videos any longer?
Wow Sam i was really worried you guys were going to get hit. i could feel your anxiety......well at least you made it back safe. Keep them vids a coming. You take care and stay safe Sam.
Poor old truck had the vapors, carry a wooden clothes pin with you,if it happens again, clamp it to the gas line closest to the exhaust on the metal part of the gas line.its getting too hot.
Wow, such a scary situation. That big bright yellow excavator is probably the only thing that kept someone from smashing into yall. That could have been extremely bad!
I cant believe ya are using that rig on highways let alone several hour trips on the highway. I cant believe the state police did not ticket ya... I cant believe ya got back on the highway without actually fixing anything... yer crazy! Glad ya made it though!
Sam Where did you find that Weiner, you deserve so much more, I hope the cops have his LIC plate so they can bill him it is not the towing company's fault that they were called for the tow, and his truck did break down, He better take his money and fix the truck it will be cheaper than that hunk of steel he bought
You are correct drivers are seriously disconnected from humanity. Now why the driver of that very overloaded pickup truck was not followed and ticketed to Mars by the state police is another travesty. That rig and trailer and cargo had no business on the public roadways. Totally his fault and if anyone was injured he would have been sued for life. Use your heads and the internet so you can find out what's appropriate to travel with the rest of us on the highways. Glad everyone is safe.
How did F not get cited/ticketed for no signals or brake lights on that trailer and no reg. plate? That was ONE thing that didn’t go wrong. Someone was praying for y’all that day.
When the minge is pulsing just prior to when the firemans helmet parts the drip whisker , Sam should ask the rasta if he could perhaps stand a little closer to the barbers shears.
Sounds like it was vapor locking… not fuel pump…. And yea it always amazes me how people turn into animals rather than helping… like the people beeping like you are choosing to sit in the road and not move… obviously you are in a situation… if you have a choice to move you would …. Idiots it’s so frustrating. A test of patience before, trust me I’ve made many of white knuckle runs over my years. It’s funny you mention NJ I traded my well sorted XJ for a locked and lifted TJ that was supposed to drive great. Well I drove to NJ from MA to make the trade and after. It was done I drove about 500 feet and realized I was in a situation bad. The jeep literally would completely swerve into the other lane randomly anything over 15 mph. It had bald super swampers and the worst lift and alignment setup you could imagine. I actually stopped at a tire shop and bought 4 new tiny size tires to make it as stable as possible for the ride home. Longest and worst drive of my life… however ended up being a big win the jeep had so much value in parts and upgrades and was really clean… just bad mechanics when they did all the upgrades the guy was clueless and just wanted something that drove good.
Put blocks under the back of the trailer next time those ramps don't have any stands. I've seen trailers that have a ton of up pressure on the trailer coupling cut loose and they could send you flying if you're inside the trailer.. on top of that you've almost got the back tires of the truck lifted off the ground that's the only thing that keeps it in place. I had my four-door diesel F350 get pushed down the driveway when loading a 20k basket lift
@@samanthaweber6932 the wheel chucks are great but I meant stands under the ramps where they connect to the back of the trailer. Then it does not try to rip the trailer off the truck or lift the truck tires off the ground. Glad you were able to help your friend out and I enjoyed the video!
Man that was tough to watch. Every single aspect of this vid was so sketchy. Reminds me of stuff me and my buddies did with our trucks when we were teenagers. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, lol
Junk excavator, junk trailer, 2 3500lb axles in that trailer, way overloaded. Unprepared, inexperienced, lucky you guys didn't get killed or kill someone.
I was stressed out just watching. One of the biggest nightmares is stalling in the center lane on the GSP. You were right to keep your friend inside the car until the officer arrived.
Enjoyed this. If it were me, the only audio would be the constant censoring bleep. lmao Love old trucks, but you can't do stuff like this with them. They're just not dependable unless they're like brand new. lol
i think the ratchet straps are poor substitute for a chain style come along / even heavy equipment tie downs may have worked better in this situation ( some can even be tightened with a power drill )
The biggest car park in England is called the M5 that is one of our freeways and is the ring road around London. It's a joke because it gets congested every day. Motorways are like your Freeways and are designated by the letter M before the numbers.
Sam I been on this exact road many times and that whole area countless times pulling equipment for septic work in northern NJ. The highway there SUСKS!! no one there has any consideration or remorse. It's mostly all fоreigners who don't care about whether they hit you or not. Planning on moving out west or way up north away from all the noise. Glad you guys made it out of there I knew quite a few guys who got hit around those areas and didn't make it out alive
@@samanthaweber6932 yeah seriously. How many miles was the whole trip? You guys are up by the Kingston area right? Been up and down passed by there lots going up to Vermont for hiking or skiing
@@DAS-Videosnot that bad? Are you joking? That's why the whole new york city metropolitan area it's very bаd. Like he said above it's true most people around there aren't from here they're mostly indіan and other stuff and they don't give a rats аss about you and they will never help you they aren't part of our world they dont help eachother. Besides a few major cites around the country that part she was stuck on is pretty much as bad as it gets in America. And trust me if they were on the side no one gonna help them either it has nothing to do with where they were. Living in NJ for 25 years never once and I mean ONCE received help from anyone not even so much as a are you okay. You must be a new yourker 😅😅
I wasn’t even looking for someone to stop and help, no one has any business walking around in that traffic. All I wanted was for them to not fly directly at us at 80 miles an hour. We had just pulled out of the ezpass it was only a quarter mile behind us at which you are or almost are stoped to go through.
@18:20 Who else is yelling "Back up the right hand track!" when they're trying to load into the trailer? As well as "Put a single strap between the two D rings and grab it with the bucket!"

I thank he needs to wash his hair and put a comb through it
WOW that's rude! Wild of you
You dont comb dreds lol
It takes a huge amount of dedication to never comb, wash or cut your hair. Kinda gross in my opinion.
@mudpuddle8805
Sounds like youve never had dreds my guy 😂😂😂😂
Back it into there use bucket on ground to push ?
A Thelma and Louise moment on the Jersey pike 😬😬😬
One hell of a journey hope u got home safe 🏡👍
All in all a great episode!
What a ride... Great video as always!!!😅😁
I like this guy...Best to you both...
Love your chemistry. Thanks for the ride.
If you are not living on the Edge , you are taking up too much room. Keep those videos rolling out !
I hope Falcon allows you to film the rebuild of the final drive on that machine. It would make for good content.
My 86 F150 used to die randomly, especially when hot, turned out to be a bad HAL effect sensor under the distributor cap.
We did have wheel chucks on the trailer
@@samanthaweber6932 the wheel chucks are great but I meant stands under the ramps where they connect to the back of the trailer. Then it does not try to rip the trailer off the truck or lift the truck tires off the ground. Glad you were able to help your friend out and I enjoyed the video!
Best to keep 1/4 or more tank of gas to keep your fuel pump cool.
All aboard the struggle bus! Persistence pays off.
Man that was tough to watch. Every single aspect of this vid was so sketchy. Reminds me of stuff me and my buddies did with our trucks when we were teenagers. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, lol
Another life adventure!🙂
Junk excavator, junk trailer, 2 3500lb axles in that trailer, way overloaded. Unprepared, inexperienced, lucky you guys didn't get killed or kill someone.
I like your video super lache pas!
I was stressed out just watching. One of the biggest nightmares is stalling in the center lane on the GSP. You were right to keep your friend inside the car until the officer arrived.
My guess would be Vapor lock, need a phenolic spacer on that fuel pump and maybe carb also
Enjoyed this.
So glad I got to see this before it was deleted for the comments
The biggest car park in England is called the M5 that is one of our freeways and is the ring road around London. It's a joke because it gets congested every day.
Motorways are like your Freeways and are designated by the letter M before the numbers.
the scarier the situation the slower time seems to pass, making an hour seem like five
I bet it was just vapor locked. Fuel boils under the hood and creates a vapor pocket. Sweet f250 though.
Good to see you are letting your hair grow back out.
Fuel vapor lock , when the fuel filter cooled off the fuel turned to a liquid again
Fuel pump vapor lock
I hope you consider filming the rebuild on this machine. It would be great content for your channel or Sam's. @@falconkrause9324
This is your best video so far, the Sam shit show! Clearly the struggle is real. Smile.
Wow that's crazy. I am still amazed we didn't get hit.
@@samanthaweber6932 yeah seriously. How many miles was the whole trip? You guys are up by the Kingston area right? Been up and down passed by there lots going up to Vermont for hiking or skiing
@@samanthaweber6932It's not that bad. People won't stop and help when stuck on the parkway because they can't.
Yeah stay in the right lane!
