There was a good video out there from a Sheriff department explaining how even things like stickers showing your children sports participation can tell people you're most likely not at the house during game nights.

Been carrying concealed since 1999. My number 1 rule is that nobody but me is ever going to know that I'm armed in any place I am. I don't see it as a fashion piece. Most of my friends and coworkers don't even know I'm armed all day every day and that's exactly the way I want it to be and it needs to be.

Here's what I say to everyone:
1.) Be invisible. Don't wear shirts or display gun stickers anywhere in public. Be inconspicuous to the public. Concealed carry is just that: CONCEALED.
2.) Train with the firearm you intend to carry, AND with the ammunition you intend to use with it.
3.)Take classes. Be it NRA, USCCA, whoever. When you get the certificates for passing the classes- KEEP THEM. God forbid you find yourself in a legal battle where the prosecutor is bringing your abilities into question, those will prove that you are trained.
4.)Carry in a properly fitting holster- one made specific to your firearm. Don't trust the universal holsters

You have an excellent point with #1. I had a restaurant manager ask me to leave because I was wearing a shirt that had a 1911 printed on it. He said that a couple of people complained about it.
I agree with you all my T-shirts have no logos whatsoever on them just colors. Also I don’t have any stickers on my cars whatsoever especially ones that would indicate I am some kind of a gun person which I am but I don’t advertise. I like to try to stay as inconspicuous looking as possible. I don’t believe an open carry because you become a target if a criminal happens to see you first and you don’t see them before they see you.
Totally agree. Anyone can afford a properly fit holster for their weapon. Prioritize yer money and get one. I got a buddy I need to get on about that. He has this crappy universal garbage holster and it flops all over the place. If he ever needs to draw his gun he's never gonna get it out of that crap.

You are right never to show your gun. Let me give a real scenario that happened to a friend. He was going through a nasty divorce. He shows up to pick up his kids. The wife thinks she is smart and calls the cops. She says that he pointed his gun at her. When the cops get there, they ask her what kind of gun it was. She describes it to a T, because she is his wife and knows what he carries. Well guess what. A couple of weeks earlier several of us convinced him to give all his guns to a friend while the divorce proceedings was happening. We knew she would try to pull something like this. It saved him a trip to jail. Never tell anyone what you carry unless you can trust them 10000%

4-Practice to proficiency. Draw, presentation, sighting, and firing.
5- Forget reloads. Carry some pepper spray, knife, and a flashlight.

Make sure the holster covers the Trigger.. and turn the holster upside down. If the gun falls out, holster is no good.
I've seen holsters that dont cover Trigger completely, or holsters that dont hold.
Personally I'm starting to lean towards holsters with leather belt loops. Metal clips are Way better then plastic clips but put holes in clothes. Plastic clips I've seen break.

Absolutely practice reloading and ALWAYS carry at LEAST two spare mags. No point in limiting your firepower when a human can easily take over six shots and keep coming.
Oh, and the average person won't land good shots during a defense situation as adrenaline and most close quarters engagements end up making accuracy more of a spray and pray reaction.
Almost 73 y.o. , I have been carrying for over 52 years. Retired LEO after 32 1/2 years. Former firearms instructor, and tactical team member, this is some of the best and most concise information I have seen put forth in a long time. You not only tell me what needs to be accomplished but why!

As a very respected firearm lawyer told me when I asked him, ANY, and EVERY customization you do to your everyday carry pistol will be used against you in court in the event you have to use your firearm in a defensive situation, after about 3 custom parts on your pistol you WILL guarantee to loose the case. DO NOT CUSTOMIZE YOUR CARRY POSTOL! Leave it stock!

He must suck because I had no issues in court with my last shooting involving a Glock that basically doesn't have a single stock component on it other than the recoil spring. It is modified as follows: Stippled grip, an added magwell, mags with mag extensions, an aftermarket trigger that was modified even further by Johnny Glocks, an aftermarket barrel, a compensator, an aftermarket slide milled for an RMR, an RMR, aftermarket back plate, aftermarket iron sights, a weapon light and an aftermarket firing pin. Unless my math is wrong, thats way more mods than the three you claimed would turn any good shooting into a bad one. Maybe ask your friend Perry Mason how a deviant like me survived a use of force review and subsequent civil lawsuit if what you say is true. Take that fuddery somewhere else.
I disagree with trigger modification to a certain extent. I am a former felony prosecutor and a former defense attorney. I put a Ghost trigger in my Glock 43x to make the pistol more accurate. Shot placement is the most important part of a shoot out. I can explain that to a jury and the police. I agree with everything else and I would add keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are forced to fire.
I don't think he's saying you shouldn't do stuff like that ever but some prosecutors will use modifications against you.
Why even take the potential liability which is going to vary between circumstances and the prosecutor?
Craig, yes I was going to say the exact same thing. Modifying it so that the carrier can control both firearm and shots better is a reason that would be entirely justified.
@@phillipneill7315 because I can shoot more accurately with the crisp trigger. The odds of me having to shoot are minimal and at trial, my expert can explain the importance of shot placement. I have tried over one hundred criminal trials and I know how juries think. When I explain that a crisp trigger makes it less likely that an innocent bystander would get hurt, it will make sense.

I had a defensive shooting in 2009 in Savannah GA on the river walk. Some dick bag decided to rob me while I was at the ATM. He initially used an oyster knife and pressed it against my ribs. He was standing directly behind me so I instinctively threw my head back connecting with his nose and he fell backwards. I was able to pull my Glock 23 out with a round in the chamber and yelled at him to stop and leave. He proceeded to pull out his 380 and had to chamber a round and that’s when I let 3 fly (2 chest and one just beneath his left eye near his nose). He had begun falling backwards from the first 2 shots so the facial hit ended up turning off the computer before his body hit the ground. No charges against me and I got my gun back within 45 days. I was very surprised. ALWAYS have one in the pipe. Only street thugs chamber rounds to look cool and it’s cost them their lives. Not that I feel bad for scum getting got.

@@esteban1487 after much research, I developed a relationship with a great custom Kydex holsters maker. He uses thicker Kydex than what you get from a typical holster manufacturer, even those with excellent reputations. He'll make holsters for nearly any handgun+light/laser combo (unless the light is a very inexpensive esoteric brand). Since I'm not military or law enforcement, I use Olight Baldr S light+green laser combos for my CC pistols, and Olight Baldr Pro R light+green lasers for my nightstand/larger pistols. He can do it all, and the quality is superb. He also charges about 2/3 the price of off-the-shelf holster manufacturers. His holsters make me feel much safer when I appendix carry.

When I first started working undercover, I carried my pistol stuck in my pants, because I thought a holster would give me away as law enforcement. Until I was buying four kilos of coke one day, and the dealer had his 1911 in a IWB holster. I told him it made him look like a cop, and he said, "So what? I'm not and I don't want to shoot my dick off." I realized he was right and I started using a holster again.

I would love to hear about any case that a gun modification swayed the jury. I have searched and have found ZERO cases where any gun modifications were used to convict a lawful gun owner involved in a self defense situation.
@@dblgonzo would you have a better chance not being found guilty of unnecessary use of force if you're carrying a .22 or a .45? Same thing with modifications. The less overzealous you appear the better off you are. I'm sure they don't write about what swayed a jury and having a lesser pound pull might be one part of their reasoning and one they wouldn't mention in a writing.

I’m retired. There are a LOT of different potential modifications to a gun. Anyone could make an argument that X modification is ______ (fill in the blank: indication of mindset, bloodlust, negligence, etc.). You’re not necessarily going to find that “argument” in case law. Depends on the modification and your stated purpose. I have plenty of exotic guns with every new-fangled feature. My personal defense weapons are fairly factory, with the addition of an optic, maybe a high quality, but not ultra-light trigger, but thats about it. You’re playing to 6 or 12. Don’t look like a dick or an idiot.
@@Coach49217 Your chances of being found guilty have more to do with where you live or where you were at the time you had to shot and kill an attacker. Than what type of gun or what sitkcers, symbols, or modifications you choose to put on your personal property.
I took my concealed carry class in april of 2020 after rona started shutting things down. I saw people fighting for toilet paper and realized I had been procrastinating long enough on getting it. When I fist got my permit i kept buying cheap holsters from ebay and they were uncomfortable and cheap. I got a better gun (Hellcat) and went to Vedder Holsters and fell in love with it. 1 good holster is better than 3 or 4 holsters that sit in a box.
I found vedder a couple years ago, it's the best. you can adjust height and cant. and if you wanna carry appendix you can buy the wing to help pull the handle closer to the body. but yeah I agree Vedder is probably the best holster company out there.
I did it right b4 the break out and did not get to even go to the range everything got closed down to this day still have not fired my new gun
same, i have a p365 that i run with the 12 round mag easily and it feels super comfortable with the vedder holster, and ive been carrying for around a year and a half. i think in the beginning vedder isnt as comfortable because its kydex but if you trust it, they can be super comfortable and retain the gun really well

@@christopherpeterraby Vedder is meh in my opinion. I had a few before I switched to JM Custom Kydex. JMCK puts the clips over the trigger guard and above but not on the slide so it's thinner. Vedder puts the clip over the thickest part of the gun. JMCK can option Discreet Carry Concepts clips, they're thin, strong, and don't print. Vedder has that chunky clip with square edges. JMCK uses Mod Wings or Dark Wings with industry standard spacing, Vedder has a proprietary wing that I found weak. JMCK has great customer service and can make modifications.
I follow the "each bullet has a lawyer attached to it", so I will make my gun as shoot-able and accurate in a good legitimate justified defensive scenario as possible.
And always try to avoid trouble. Being able to de escalate a problem is priceless. Usually don't have any problem doing this
Same here! Even though I carry everyday, I argue with ppl sometimes, but never, EVER! Is grabbing my gun the first thing that comes to mind, if talking does not work then I just walk away, to me words are like the wind, in no way can someone's words make me fear for my life, the only way I will fear for my life or my families is if they charge at me with bad intentions in their eyes.

No one has ever been prosecuted in a justified use of force for having a trigger modification. The key to legal use of force is making sure it’s a clean shoot

@@billbee235 2020 Scott Smith in Nevada, was charged with firearm recklessness and negligence and lost his self defense firearm case due to a modified trigger, He owned a Wilson Combat 1911 with a 3-pound trigger which forensic firearm examiners say was supposed to have 5 pound pull stock. these issues fed accusations of recklessness and negligence which led to Scott loosing his case and he was charged with manslaughter. The defendant testified that Scott purposely aimed the gun at the deceased and purposely and unnecessarily pulled the trigger, Scott said that he asked his lawyer if it was ok to modify the trigger and his lawyer defended and told him that the weight of the trigger should not matter but it could cause and accident or inadvertent discharge of the firearm. the prosecution argued that it was negligent and Absolutely unnecessary for him to have such a light trigger in his self-defense gun. Scott didn’t have any handicaps or logical reason to have such a customization on his firearm. The prosecution forward the theory that he negligently discharged the weapon into the body of the deceased without cause to do so, and because of his negligence, Scott is criminally liable for his death. the jury bought this argument and Scott went to prison for manslaughter.

I’m being a little pedantic but it’s ironic that he says carry guns shouldn’t be modified, but it’s fine if the gun manufacturer does it for you like how smith and Wesson upgraded the shield to the shield plus? That’s proof it is okay to modify your carry gun to be more efficient

I agree with testing what ammo preforms consistently well in a gun.
I had a sig P224 that consistently had issues chambering only certain ammo. It was a few brands and I got sick of trying to have to keep track of which ones were the problem. I sold it to a friend that said he wasn’t worried about it.
All that being said, I personally like to practice with cheep crappy ammo. It gives unpredictable malfunctions. Being able to handle malfunctions reflexively is a vital part of shooting.

I carry a P365, the only thing I do extra is use the pinky extension mag, it’s small enough to not imprint on anything. 100% agree with!

I switched mine to a Wilson Combat XL grip module. I have XXL size glove hands and the extra size was needed to get a firm grip on draw stroke. The XL slide poked my junk when I was sitting down so I merged the two for the best of both worlds.
Good Advice! The one about the hollow points was spot on! I carry gold dots and have since I started carrying about 20 years ago. I also carry Remington Golden Sabres in my Glock 30.
We need more of this! I've been carrying for 2 years and every now and then I'll catch myself makin small adjustments that aren't as smart or beneficial. those small adjustments could mean life. All gun owners need to hear this I Definitely did! Sometimes I get comfortable and careless as far as who I trust and who I learn from I need to take a step back use my knowledge to the best of my ability and learn alittle more! You can't preach safely enough! Where I'm from everyone and there dog Carries everyday I've heard way to many horrible story's because of poor judgement. Not practicing the correct and safe way, braggin and showin everyone etc.I could go on forever. I needed this thank man!

Great advice. Along with the “don’t show your gun” I would add don’t even talk about it. Of course the people around you and with you should know, but beyond that just keep your mouth closed because nobody needs to know. Also, make sure the people with you know what to do and what not to do. Had my shirt ride up once and started showing my holster, my ten year old stood to block it visually, tapped me and non verbally let me know to get back into frame. It comes from talking about it ahead of time. Also, if something does break sideways the last thing you need is someone with you yelling “you have a gun, do something!”. Talk about these scenarios before they happen.

How about you have a disability and making modifications on your gun to shoot it smoother and accurate.A good lawyer can dismantle this argument if it is a justified shooting.
There's a hell of a lot more to that, including civil litigation.
I started carrying in 1978. About 44 years ago. I have always modified my carry gun. First was a Ruger Police Service Six. Stainless steel .38 special revolver with a 4" barrel. The trigger pull was so hard and rough it was extremely hard to hit a target firing double action. The grips were tiny and the front sight was black and hard to see. Trigger job, red ramp sight, and Hogue grips. Turned it into a smooth, accurate handgun that even my elderly mother could shoot comfortably. Over four decades and thousands of rounds later it still functions flawlessly. I have worn out a few holsters, though. Yes, I've carried semi autos, .32, .380, 9mm, .45, .44 mag, but I prefer the .38 wheel gun. If I want to show it to someone, just dump the 6 rounds in my hand and I don't have to worry about it getting reloaded or going off accidentally. No magazines, will function with any .38 special or +p. Never have to rack a slide. Can use a speed loader as fast as most can swap magazines. My one tip, never carry a weapon you aren't proficient with.

I think you mean single action. Double action is when you first cock the hammer, before firing. Old so called Cowboy revolvers is Double action only. It is a double action to fire the gun. It seem most people are getting this wrong to day.

@@Username-2 My .38 was from the 80's, not the 70's. I have a lot of semi-autos. Been shooting them since I first qualified with the 1911, then the M92 in the Army. While you're still clearing the misfeed , jam, or stovepipe, or racking a new round from a dead primer I can put six rounds in a spot the size of a quarter at 7 yards without aiming. Not enough recoil with a .38+p to lose the sight picture at longer distances, either, should I need the sights. New doesn't always mean better. I try out all the new pistols at my local range. If I like one I'll buy it. Last one was a Khar. Next will be the new Python
You should always carry 2 handguns. Doesn't matter if you carry a 21 shot 9mm or a 6 shot revolver. You don't drive your car without a spare do you ? Fighting with a handgun is not forgiving.

There's no problem with gun mods provided they serve to improve accuracy and/or safety. I have been carrying for 40 years, I served in LE as a SWAT commander, the military as an F-15 pilot, and I went through letc training to carry on the flight deck as an airline pilot.
Putting "born to kill" on the side or similar is a horrible idea, but a quality trigger, aftermarket sights, grip mods... These are all fine.
I was forced to take two lives as a peace officer, and I used a G23C with an aftermarket trigger, custom stippling, a match quality barrel, aftermarket sights, and an oversized magwell. It was not an issue. I've testified in cases as an expert witness and I've never seen ANYONE, ANYWHERE, have a problem with quality upgrades that improved the gun.
If you can find any case, anywhere, where quality upgrades that made the gun easier to shoot or more accurate caused an individual to be found guilty of manslaughter or more, I would dearly love to see it.

You have qualified immunity, a union, and a brotherhood behind you when you pull the trigger. Civilians (unless wealthy) have either a mid lawyer or a public defender. Completely different. The DA works hand in hand with the police so if they take on a case against a cop it's a much bigger deal. A prosecutor can use anything to attack you. While I think it's ridiculous after watching the Rittenhouse trial I think that fact is obvious.

My gun attorney I have on retainer told me that most courts will not allow modification such as triggers and the like to be used against you. My lawyer also stated he would love for the prosecutor to try that in court. Most know better.

In the case of Glock which makes guns that work and work every time then why would anyone want to compromise the integrity of an already functioning firearm by modifying it? I've been carrying for 37 years, so all I got to say is, good video! I guess I could add, make sure your carry holster choice allows you to reholster with one hand.
I would say: see the Armed Attorney’s channel about the subject of modifications. Everything else is subject to opinion and/or hearsay.
I always buy/carry factory mags, but my backup mags are the highest or higher capacity than the one in my firearm that the oem makes available.
I would also say, for peace or mind. Get with US Lawshield, USCCA, etc. for that unfortunate situation where you need to use deadly force.

I agree with your comments, only modification I have ever made on a carry firearm are sights. After making the change I made sure I was familiar with and there was nothing unusual about the point of aim and impact. Modifications aren't just about legal and reliability issues but also how well and safely you can handle the firearm under stress.
The only actual modification I've made to my carry gun is the sights as well.
Came with just white dots on the posts. Changed it to tritium glow in the dark green for the rear sights and orange for the front.
Great points here. I’ve been carrying concealed every single day since I was 21 which has been going on 17 years now. I love the idea of living in a place where a lot of people carry and for the most part a lot have common sense and in my circle unless you have some crazy rare one were aren’t impressed by someone’s new carry gun enough to say “let me see it” now at the range I or others may wanna try one another’s out when you’ve never shot that kind but other than that I’ll keep mine on my person. Being a responsible gun owner is exactly that, being responsible.
Excellent tips. My list is very much the same but I do modify the sights and test them to my liking. Also something I never do is recycle my carry ammo in the chamber more than once or twice. I am also a fan of keeping a carry gun as close to factory as possible. I also always test my ammo before relying on it for edc.

9:32 I always said the same thing! If you're gun slightly prints through your shirt, 99.99% of people aren't going to notice. People are too engrossed in their cell phone, their grocery list, what they have going on. People are generally very unobservant, even to the obvious.
I don't concern myself with 'deep concealment' or worry about a bit of printing. The smallest pistol I carry is a 'compact' (15+1 9mm or 10-round .45). No one ever notices. I spend all day with people... in and out of cars, stores, restaurants... they have no idea I'm armed.
I just go my revolver back from my gunsmith who did a trigger job. He honed and polished the action. The double action trigger is much improved. He didn't change any springs so the pull weight hasn't changed but it is very smooth. My front sight is much less likely to be pulled off target. This increases accuracy so the risk of hitting an unintended person is increased. Reducing pull weight may not be good but reducing travel and smoothing that travel will help you shoot more accurately.

I hear what you're saying about the backplates but there hasn't been a case tried yet that they've used the gun as a weapon against the person.
2. Trigger modification; Another one I disagree. If you have someone that has arthritis or something like that, you WANT that person who is carrying, to have something that is better suited for them.
There was a case that someone had a dust cover that said smile and wait for flash and the prosecutor brought it up attempting to prove malice. I'm pretty sure it wasn't successful but it was brought infront of the jury. I wish I could find the case but it wasn't super popular case.
Long story short in closing arguments the prosecutor can make any prejudicial argument to the jury they want and its better safe than sorry, especially for something as non functional as a dust cover or back plate. Why bother.
Edit: as a side note I agree about trigger modification as long as no safeties are compromised its actually an advantage if you can articulate that a lighter trigger is better because you're less likely to move your sights off target and injury innocent bystanders. So I agree there as long as it's a reasonable weight and doesn't compromise the safety functions.
It's why we bought a 9mm Shield EZ for my carpal-tunnel afflicted wife. Easy to load the mags, easy to rack the slide. We bought the Performance Center edition, so all modifications were done at the OEM factory.
Jay: I hear you. Remember the jury is emotionally driven as well. Save the "Kill'em all Let God sort them out" for the range and smack talk around the camp fire. If a jury is looking for some reason to give a 51% decision to the plaintiff or prosecution; it may be just that. To answer Dillon; it was a SWAT officer's rifle. Yeah not a good look for the Government official. I also concur that modifications done for specific reasons are definitely okay. But putting a one pound trigger on is problematic to defend in a court room (criminal or civil). But having a 3 pound trigger using proper gun handling is no different (legally than a 4, 6 or 7 pound trigger). You can argue (effectively) that trigger control and squeeze puts the round where you wanted it and greater pounds per square inch could cause a miss in stress situation (remember most civilians don't train often enough). So smooth trigger pull is a good idea but hair triggers are not. On capacity I would say this. I carry 12 with finger extender (more control) but my back up mags are larger (cause if I got to change mags its a shit show and I need more ammo). Most shootings average 2.5 (can't remember if its 2.3 or 2.5) rounds max. So if I ended up on the Hollywood Bank / School/ mall shoot out I am ready but my standard mag is the beginning for weight, conceal carry. QUALITY HOLSTER ALWAYS. Good ammo; carry what the police use. Ball ammo is more problematic in a shoot than hollow point. But thats a discussion for another time.
Yeah the armed attorneys have a good video on this which I agree with, basically anything that assists with you having a tighter shot group/ increasing your accuracy is fine
@@dawildebeastbc agreed trigger modifications, as long as they don't disable safeties, are fine and you can even argue their merit in court. Taking less effort to move your sights off target and potentially hit an innocent bystanders is a pro not a con.
As for the backplate its unlikely it could be used against you to prove mindset but unlikely isn't impossible, and with no tangible value it just isn't worth it.

Real talk Hedgeshot, I agree whole heartedly with the points of view you bring to the forefront. This is really a serious business when you decide to carry a gun. I had my cc license for 5 years before I decided to buy a gun, I am just now getting around to looking for holsters now to carry, this is serious business with serious consequences. I just joined along with my wife, USCCA and I am looking forward to the training and paraphernalia that comes with it…..i will do my part to be diligent in going over what I receive to be absolutely confident in carrying a CCW in the event of something happening where life or liberty is threatened. Most of these are excellent points for novice shooters to learn. However, something to consider😉:
• CHANGING SIGHTS: That’s the first thing I do if the OEM sights aren’t up to my standards. You don’t need to be stuck with crappy sights for fear of prosecution. I’ve never heard of a prosecutor making a case that night sights (or any sights) were more violent or lethal than black-ribbed combat sights. Being more accurate is being responsible. Put the sights on that make you the most accurate. Period.
• MAGS- shoot the most reliable mag your firearm “needs.” I have 2 Kimber .45 1911’s. It’s no secret that Kimber provides sub-par magazines with their packages (watch Hickok45 reviews). I ALWAYS switch them out for Wilson Combat. And I don’t lose a minute of sleep worrying about prosecution for a top quality mag.
My Glock mags are awesome, and I never switch them.
AMMO-don’t buy ammo that has inflammatory names (Undertaker’s Choice…RIP MF…Bad to the Bone Specials. [I made those up; you get the point])
My Duty carry firearm is a Glock 34 with Leupold Delta Pro red dot, OEM mags, OEM trigger, Surefire X300 light, and 124 gr Speer Gold Dots. I carry three 17-round mags on my belt. I’m looking into 23 round Glock mags, because I do a lot of shifts in remote areas by myself. When you’re out of ammo, you’re the target.
For EDC, I have a G17 with a TLR-2 Streamlight and Ameriglo Bold night sights. I changed the barrel to a match grade Wilson Combat, because of all raving reviews. Maybe I just got a lemon, but feel like I wasted my money.
As you can see, I’m just not a fan of low capacity, short sight-radius firearms.
But oddly enough, my new G19 Gen 5 is my most accurate EDC firearm. It out shoots the Wilson Combat match grade barrel and can hold its own against the tack driver Kimber 1911’s (it’s under 2” groups at 25 yards). I’ll be switching to it soon.

If you're showing your carry gun to one of your friends, you don't hand it to them with a full magazine.
A responsible gun owner would never do this. I've had family members ask to see my gun. The first thing I do is drop the mag and then pop the chamber before handing it over.

Great point that a lot of people more say then actually follow through with when handling guns. The second someone's environment and surroundings become comfortable, there 's a lot more room for errors.

When you select your defense ammo, you should match the grain of your practice rounds to your carry round (ex: you pick 124 grain defense ammo, you should use 124 grain FMJs to practice with). Practicing with 115 grain FMJs and using 150 grain defense ammo, you might not have the accuracy with your weapon that you think you will.

Trigger mod. I have done it on one gun. I put an apex trigger on my shield 1.0. Makes it shoot more like a Shield Plus. The argument is that I shoot the 1.0 more accurately, ensuring a higher probability of hitting a threat target instead of a bystander.

One exception to the mag rule, 1911s, take those factory mags and leave them in the case. Wilson or cobra work the best, Wilson has a lifetime return policy and I've had to return 2 in 37 years. Good video, carry on.
Exactly. My Kimber mags are junk. Feel like they have sand in them, they jam up, fail to feed, etc. My Wilson mags have never let me down, and I have them for all 3 of my 1911s (Kimber and Colt). I’ll always replace a mag that comes from the factory feelings like shit

Exactly. Wilson Combat all the way. I have had good luck with Ed Brown mags, but the Wilson's are in another league. Stay away from the cheap shit, no pro mag bs or no name asian mags and you'll be alright.

I agree with most of what you said except for the trigger modification. That can be very important to some people on how well and consistent they shoot their gun. Me personally I love a 3 lb pull I will not have any of mine over a 5 lb pull.

That can be vary true. Sometimes a heavy pull can throw the aim out the window. I know a guy that couldn't hit anything with his 380. But with our friends 9mm he would hit sometimes. Some people can't be helped. Every one else could hit with the 380. But it took focus.

This whole trigger mod debate is over played. All manufacturers now are introducing better triggers in their carry guns. A heavier trigger increases the risk to bystanders, a very strong argument.

Maybe my perspective is skewed since I'm a gun loving God fearing male, but the only argument I see that they could use a modified trigger for is when you have a negligent discharge. Shooting someone you did not intend to shoot. Doing so with or without a modified trigger is likely not going to matter. So long as the trigger is drop safe and you're competent with it and follow gun safety rules I don't see it being an issue.

Man you’re awesome! I really agree with everything you said. The one I’d echo on is NEVER open carry and show off, as not everyone is pro guns. I am always finding better ways to better conceal my subcompact so no one sees me printing.

When I transitioned to wearing a suit every day, I had to go to a shoulder rig because the large frame handgun I carried would not work with any belt that went with the suit. I had an Alessi handmade because they said they were the most comfortable holster in the world. I am glad they were not lying and I am not happy they did not survive COVID. A good reliable holster is not cheap, and performing effectively with your firearm is priceless. The Alessi was $260, and I was ready to buy another for a different model. Caarying is serious business. Treat it as such.
Love the channel.... so i agree with 3/5 you've mentioned. I changed the trigger on my MP Shield to the Apex complete kit. The OEM trigger was horrible, gritty and the hinge is terrible, the Apex is so smooth and little lighter (love shooting the gun even more now), also added Magguts to the 8 round mag (+2) for my back-up mag with Neomag pocket clip. I live in California (yeah yeah yeah i know, lookn to move some day) i cant get a Shield Plus cuz of our firearm roster. Finally changed the sights to XS big dots which is much needed to carry at night. I agree dont show you gun, always use a holster and practice with your carry ammo. Great vid, just wanted to add my two cents, keep up the good work.
I'll change sights for better ones, but not "fancy gadget" ones. I'll change a trigger if it's awful, but not for a super light 8 way adjustable 4 stage durka durk trigger. Save that rube goldberg device for competitions.
I agree with a lot of the points you mentioned and of course there are always a few more to add to that list. I carry a variety of different firearms from week to week, month to month simply because I don’t want to limit myself to just one type, style, brand, caliber… that’s just my way of doing things. The two biggest points you mentioned that I myself am a firm believer in is, train with the weapon you’re going to carry, and always have a holster for your weapon that has good retention. Because I have seen, people buy a firearm and a crappy holster and watch them struggle to clear the holster. Two factors they are unfamiliar with both the firearm and the holster, or two they never train with either. So I feel you train as you’d fight and you are only as good as the equipment you have let’s you be. Last note which I am finding myself doing more and more, is not letting anybody know exactly what I have period, weather it’s my EDC or my newest cool guy gun. Hell my wife doesn’t even know what the hell I have, nor does she really care. The point is the less people know, the less they can make you the victim. I used to love showing my guns off to my closest buddies. Now days I’m in a place of I trust no one.
i agree i think if you take the step to own a firearm you must train. especially of you plan to carry. another reason i believe people have problems is the attire they wear. pants too tight, or belt to loose. i have a belt that makes my conceal hard to draw so i dont wear it when carrying anymore.

I also disagree with “no trigger modifications” claim. My primary concern is the ability to make good hits on a threat and not hitting innocent bystanders. I changed to an aftermarket trigger and an “improved” trigger connector. I shoot with a practical shooting club and I shoot what I carry. We do a lot of different things that you can’t do on a regular range. I carry a sub-compact pistol since that is all I can easily conceal. With the modifications I made, I was keeping up with guys who were shooting larger guns.
I agree. The context of his extremely light 3lb pull can have some negative effects in court because of the whole adrenaline, light trigger, maybe shot prematurely.. that is a thing. but a smoother lighter trigger over all I support getting.
Im in the disagree camp on the no trigger mods too. Here is Massachusettstan we cannot buy a new gun from a FFL without a number of "safety devices" on it without a 10lb trigger pull. So example, if i bought a brand new shield plus with a thumb safety it would have a 10lb trigger pull because it does not require "multiple motions" to fire. One safety is simply not enough here....
Here its totally legal to posses and buy a used firearm with less than a 10lb trigger, just not new so trigger mods are very common.
For me since i despise safety's on a carry gun and cant get a glock (they don't play ball here in MA with the dumb rules) i carry a Shield with an apex kit in it to get the trigger back to a stock 5.5lbs or so.
For anyone that does not think trigger weight matters come here to mass and try shooting a 10lb plus pull on a pistol. No matter how good a shooter you are its almost a guarantee you will yank shots off target which is a bad thing in a self defense scenario.
I’m tired of people saying not to modify your carry gun. Functional modifications are generally fine.
You gave sound advice and I agree with you, however concerning the after market mags I use S15 mags in my 43X and I’ve put over a thousand rounds through it without a failure.
I have brought this up a few places, regarding the backplates, and not everyone feels the way I do, but I caution people against anything that might cause the backplate to grab your eye away from the sights. The most prominent thing entering your vision, if you have to draw to save yourself, should be your front sight, IMO.
This was MY first thought about that one. Forget the lawyers, I don't want a bunch of distracting garbage on my gun.

Awesome points. I had a spare (i still own but only use round ball) due to my EDC not being available for a mechanical failure and found my spare wouldn't feed JHP and would jam. Needless to say, if I hadn't experienced this at the range practicing, I could have been in a seriously compromised position during an emergency. Definitely burn a couple mags of self-defense rounds and practice, practice, practice.
I understand about the aftermarket modifications, but I have used Magguts’ “+1” mag springs in my old M&P Shield 1.0 with 0% failures over the course of the year or so that I shot it regularly, So I’d be pretty comfortable using the new ones that are made for the Shield Plus, which add 2 or 3 more rounds, for 13- and 10-round mags, respectively. You have to admit, it would be pretty cool to have a reliable 15+1 in a Shield format.
If I can make a suggestion here, I agree with your statements about testing your carry ammo, but I'd also suggest that you not only test the ammo, but your carry magazines as well. Especially in 1911s, changing magazine or ammo can make a handgun unreliable unless you've tested the combination.
And make sure you’ve run at least 500 rounds through that gun prior to carrying it.

Not everyone has the money but you still must train or your not going to be proficient with your handgun. I too am poor but I still take the time to practice and buying a box here and there won't break the budget. It adds up. I know because I carried a 1911A1 for years and then went to a Sig 2022 9mm compact. I practice with both.

I’m not the one that said (500 rounds) was the magic number. I’m just trying to figure out why 500 rounds is the perfect number for your edc ??? 🤷♂️ shoot the mags and ammo through it you’re gonna carry them call it good. I qualify every two years for my ccw permit with my edc but it’s not my range firearm but all our firearms are the same k.i.s.s. so it really doesn’t matter in my case. If that’s the only firearm you have than by all means shoot the hell out of it but that still doesn’t explain why 500 ???? why THAT particular number for THAT particular firearm ???
I totally agree with you 100% especially on magazines. I'm 63 and I've learned throughout the years the only magazine you buy are the ones made by the manufacturer. If you want others to play at the range that's fine but when you're carrying for your protection stay with an unmodified pistol and factory mags
Thanks for your opinion especially about not being self conscious about carrying and always fidgeting with your cover shirt. I never tell anyone when I’m carrying. Also, testing your carry ammo, I really need to do that and not just assume it’s going to run. Good advice.

Excellent advice. The extended magazine thing was something I was considering. I simply went to Gun Broker and purchased a stripped Gen 2 frame for my original Smith & Wesson M&P Shield. The new frame already had the mag release. That's the one part that can't be transplanted from a gen 1 to a gen 2. All the other components were simply transpanted from the gen 1 frame into the new gen 2 frame. All factory parts all fit perfectly. Now I have an increased capacity Shield with all original factory parts and it shoots just fine. The original trigger vs the new trigger is of no consequense to me. I'm fine with either type. All very good points, and I agree with them all. I don't use multiple kinds of ammo in a carry gun by choice, but will in non carry guns.
I think this was great advice! I have always said the same thing about making modifications to your carry gun. The only one is night sights and something like Talon tape.. nothing more... You don't want to give the other guys lawyer ammunition!!
Thank you. Very good advice. Especially when testing your carry ammo. I have a few handguns, including a Kimber Micro 9. It's a beautiful piece of art, but I won't rely on it as a carry gun. At the range, it will shoot FMJs ok, but will frequently jam up with certain brands of hollow points. It's too snappy in recoil and hurts the trigger finger, without gloves. It's important to occasionally test your carry ammo with your guns at the range to determine how reliable each of your weapons is with different types of ammo. BTW, I also find the Kimber 1911 Stainless II .45ACP is much more reliable than its little brother, the Micro 9, so I'm not ragging on Kimbers, just the Micro 9. Be safe all, God bless. JMHO.
I was at an indoor range a few months ago and in the next stall was an average older newbie with a Micro nine. Twice she asked me to clear malfunctions. We discussed limpwristing and I didn’t have to clear another
My micro 9 jammed a few times when it was new I took it apart tuned the extractor and it’s been flawless every since even after carrying it for several months at a time stuffed with pocket lint flawless if your having issues there’s something wrong with it they build fantastic guns
Kimber is junk in my book……
On the mods issue, I’d just add that there are mods that are oem, specifically from Glock, that are really good and in a sense, almost critical in many cases. Oem ext slide stop is important in my view. Then u have the oem +2 mag extensions, oem ext mag release, etc. I did those kind of mods to my G45 and believe it’ll maintain reliability. But outside of aftermarket sights, I agree with you on the parts side. If you Frankenstein your gun, don’t be surprised when it doesn’t fire when you need it most.

Agree with all your points especially carrying loaded. My friends say they aren't comfortable carrying loaded but I have seen so many times at the range were someone's hand slips, or a weak rack etc causes a round to get stuck sideways. Can you imagine under stress in a real situation that happening? Sheesh!
If you're not carrying a loaded weapon, you're not carrying anything useful. Malfunctions happen. That's why we train for handling them. Granted they have to be staged, for the most part, in practice, but muscle memory is critical. If you have to think about something in a crisis, your already behind the curve and could wake up dead. I always carry loaded, one in the chamber, checked and verified every time I put on my weapon. I check it again when it leaves my person for the day for it must remain ready to be put to use to protect myself, my wife, and/or those around at ALL times!

If your friend wont carry with one in the chamber, they shouldn't be carrying at all. That gun will end up in the bad guys collection and your friend will be taking a very very long dirt nap. If your not prepared between the ears, dont carry.
Yep. Especially the point on carrying with one in the chamber. The so-called "Israeli Carry", ie : empty chamber, is a myth. As they say: "Locked and Loaded". All great advice, Hegshot!
I always tell my friends, not carrying with one in the chamber is Like expecting to be able to put your seatbelt on in the middle of a car accident.
I’m a retired federal agent and have carried a weapon for 35 years and a Glock for 25 years. I agree that there’s no reason to modify a Glock. I agree with your points of carrying a weapon. Thank you for your helping others be safe.
The first thing the crime lab will do with your gun when they get it from evidence, is make sure its unloaded and after this they will test the trigger pull and see if it matches factory settings!!! Glad you mentioned modifications.

Growing up half my family was on the south side of Chicago. (get off the expressway at 95th and head east to Ewing Ave) There are some rougher neighborhoods through there. Much as I agree with your advice for most people who don't need to be in places like the one I mentioned, it's far more important to not act like you don't belong somewhere. Relax. Think about where you are, where you're walking on the street, when you're walking through an area (time of day-like I need to say that), etc. People are people. Be cool. Relax. . If you have a reason to be in a place, it'll show. Chances are you'll be fine. Remember, to a gang, you're in their house. Be respectful in someone else's house. Tacticewl is, uh... Just don't broadcast yourself.
I edc a CZ P10-S with a CZ 2 round extension made for the CZ oem mags that were included in the case when I bought the gun new. It's not the extra 2 rounds that's most important, but the excellant grip I get from using the extensions. BTW, my occasional carry gun is a Shield Plus.
Hi I also have the CZ P10-S and I completely agree, the extra grip, that comes from the extension makes a huge difference. I also shoot it quite often at the range and have had no malfunctions, once the extensions have been added :)

“Never carry without a holster” I agree except with a snubbie revolver in a coat pocket that has a long hard double action pull. That’s really the only way I’d carry without a holster. Oh and my NAA 22mini mag with a pocket clip grips. That’s it. 👌

I pocket carry also but I use a pocket holster if you get a nice one like a vedder they have pocket hooks and thumb tabs to make the holster stay in your pocket
@@joshuabennett7334 yeah I’m not talking pants pockets I’m talking winter coat front pocket with nothing but the pistol in the pocket. It’s to be able to shoot from concealment if it’s in a holster you can’t do that it totally defeats the purpose of carrying in the front pocket of a winter coat.
@@joshuabennett7334 yes I front pants pocket carry also, a LCP max in a DeSantis pocket holster. Also a Kahr PM40 in a sticky holster, various snubbies, a Seacamp 32, 22Mag NAA Yada Yada Yada. Yes in front pants pocket specially a semi auto you need a holster.
Agree. I pocket carry a J Frame in slacks or jeans only w/a pocket holster. In cooler weather the same weapon goes in a jacket pocket absent the holster b/c I can shoot through the pocket if necessary. The only modification on any carry gun is a change of grips, or a T Grip, so my XLG hands fit the grip better. If carrying a semi auto I don’t use mag extensions or any non factory magazine.
The same people who put the stupid gun mods on their gun and carry around punisher and zombie logos are also the guys that put the stupid rubber nutsack on their trucks.

Dude, my one and only ND happened a year ago in the back room at work… while showing my carry to a client. Luckily, I’m essentially brainwashed to do certain things while handling it, so the round went into a pile of bags of concrete and steel weight plates. Why those were in the back room of a tattoo shop, I don’t know. And I’m pretty sure everyone who was working on a tattoo at that moment had a flinch in their linework😂. But, holy shit was I mortified and embarrassed. And immediately was like, “well, there’s something I’ll absolutely never do again!”
I carry a Glock 43x and it has a great trigger. Unfortunately, I'm 81 and have weak hands. So, a lighter trigger makes it possible for me to control the gun. I'd do that for any stock gun.
Pretty much agree with everything you said, except I have a pinky extension on my shield plus 10-round mags. First I trained without it, but found I shoot much better, and control my recoil much better with that pinky extension

Fantastic video!! Probably the best video and all very excellent points and recommendations. The only thing I think you can change is the sights (fixed swapped to say night sights or Red/Green Dot). Concealed is concealed and a decent holster from say We the People. They are affordable. Always carry with an OEM magazine with one in the chamber. I do carry two extra mags on my weak side but at least one extra, if possible. Carry one of the approved FBI protection rounds. Hornady Critical duty 124/135 Flextip, Speed Gold Dot 124/147gr, or Federal HST 124/147gr. Again, this best video is absolutely the best advice.
I have to say you're correct about carring one handgun and getting well acquainted with it however, you are not correct about some modification. polishing your trigger components or replacing the trigger itself helps the shooter stay on target without struggling to pull extra pounds on the trigger. Holding target is very important when shooting of accuracy.
As a veteran firearm lawyer told me, if you put a custom trigger on your carry pistol and you have to use your firearm in self defense, YOU WILL loose the case.
