Behind the Political Spin: The British Election

  • This election is the closest in decades, so winning over an increasingly disillusioned electorate matters. But instead of actually facing the public, the risk-averse party leaders are stuck on a grim carousel of predictable press conferences and stage-managed photocalls.
    Politicians are aided in their cause by an army of spin-doctors that minimize unscripted interactions with journalists and the public alike. These media buffers, crowd fluffers, and party cheerleaders help the campaign stay on message, but in doing so they keep politicians evasive, and the public at arm's length.
    VICE News joined the campaign trail to confront the journalists, spin-doctors, and leaders who all have a part to play in the evolution of this Pyongyang press junket that serves to lock out the great, unvetted public.

    People don't get that that debate was for the OPPOSITION, aka Not Cameron or Clegg. Hate how they make out as if he is a scared or something, In Prime Ministers questions Milliband got wrecked every time by him but he pulls this "coward" card because it's too late to reorganise the debates, Milliband is completely pathetic.

      @LRC92 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CaptainShed Why does Cameron refuse to debate Miliband head to head? What has he got to lose? If you think PMQs is in anyway a debate, you must be deluded.

    • @shed2211
      @shed2211 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke PMQ is where the opposition attempts to find faults in the government, whether it's your form of a "debate" is irrelevant seeing as Ed loses every time, usually speechless because he doesn't have a retort. To be honest Milliband provides better comedy in those than most shows on the BBC. Cameron wanted other parties to be involved which is completely fair. If it wasn't for Cameron so many people wouldn't even know parties like UKIP and Greens exist. Proper democracy instead of Labours hypocrisy.

    • @LRC92
      @LRC92 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CaptainShed As in it's name, PMQs is for the opposition to ask questions to the PM, it's not intended to be a debate in anyway. David Cameron said himself before the 2010 election to Brown it's ridiculous to claim PMQs can be called a debate.
      “If it wasn't for Cameron so many people wouldn't even know parties like UKIP and Greens exist.” Seriously? Not sure if trolling...
      “I won't do the debates unless it includes UKIP.” UKIP gets included. “I won't do the debates unless the Greens are included.” the Greens get included. “I won't do the debates unless the SNP and PC are included.” SNP and PC get included. “I won't do the debates unless the Northern Irish Parties are included.” Seriously? “Okay I'll do one debate, but no more.” Any serious person with a functioning brain, Tory or not knows he withered out of them to avoid risking a reduction in his opinion ratings. People wouldn't know UKIP and the Greens exist? I don't where you've been, UKIP and the Greens have received substantial media coverage for the last three years.

    • @shed2211
      @shed2211 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke They would not be mainstream and Cameron has made in black and white clear in the past that Milliband is terrible at debating and arguing vs him. tbh he's pretty pathetic

    Love this. Straight up asked questions right up the arse at the politicians. They (politicians) are trying so hard not to say anything wrong that it is ridiculous. Although this is understandable. It is the medias fault really. Because when the media tries to attract people with headlines and stories that is often only half the truth, that is when it gets really fucked up. I love you Vice News for not being a part of that. Wow recently I've been a little disappointed in some of the reporting by Vice News but I thought this was great. There was plenty to dislike about Ed Miliband - but he was strides ahead of Cameron and Clegg in this election. For all his faults, the PR obsessions, his savvy politician demeanor - his desire to change the country was far more authentic than Cameron's; who you can tell just lifted lines about change from Obama because he's more interested in electioneering and listening to his PR gurus than putting up a flag and standing for something. Miliband represented, however marginally, a return to the values of Old Labour, when social justice was non-negotiable. He was about shifting the balance of power in favour of ordinary people far more than Cameron or Clegg could ever pretend to be.
    Just look at the open season the british press exacted on Miliband. The tabloids abandoned all pretense of impartiality. They were terrified that Miliband might just make good on his promise to make the rich pull their weight. That's all it is: make the people who have more money than sense do a little bit more to help society in these hard times. The media used every tactic in the book to make that sound unappealing.

    I think the problem with this election is that we need to keep David Cameron in for one more term so he can continue to rebuild the economy but that's all that he is there for, the British public need Ed Miliband for his long tears economic plans such as keeping the NHS. So maybe the next election we will see Ed Miliband in power

    The Tories may win a few more seats than Labour (mainly due to the fact Labour's being obliterated in Scotland by the SNP), but Labour and the left-wing parties (SNP, SDLP, PC, Green) could easily bring down a Tory government, even if it's supported by the Lib Dems, DUP and UKIP. In other words, left-wing parties will win more seats between them than right-wing parties. Meaning Cameron will struggle to lead a government. Meanwhile, the main parties are trying to rule out doing deals with the smaller parties. On an unrelated note, Nick Clegg is expected to lose his seat of Sheffield Hallam. This will undoubtably be an interesting one...

    Cons, with 50.9% of parliamentary seats, actually got support from about 22% of those eligible to vote; just over one in four people appear to support them, and this is heralded as a great victory! Just how democratic are we?

    I love the idea of this "peek behind the curtain" so to speak, but surely something as big as the uk election would warrant a more capable reporter? He was like a lost puppy when he got the chance to ask Miliband a question, a good opportunity to have a pop squandered there, and saying the word "bullshit" only showed his lack of experience or skill. It's like he'd put more thought into deciding to say the big nasty word to a politician to get cool points or come off as an edgey reporter, that he completely forgot to put any thought into his question or the delivery of it. Fail

    Your participation in "democracy" is limited to your vote. Nothing more. Nothing less. You more often than not aren't allowed to ask politicians questions, even if you intend to vote for them, even if they disgrace the campaign promises that won your vote in the first place. You can shake their hand if you're lucky... To me, this sounds a lot like a broken system.

    This is precisely the problem with career politicians. People in general are usually very bad at lying about lies that they cover up with more lies, and the media are starting to catch on to this. This is why career politicians go to great lengths to keep these things private.

      catothewiser There is no single definition, but generally right-wing means to support the elitist upper classes, left-wing is to support the oppressed lower classes.

    • @Terror350
      @Terror350 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      catothewiser Lenin wrote a book called "Left-Wing Communism: An Infantile Disorder" where he openly mocks leftists within the Communist movement, he was not exactly "right-wing" but he was not left-wing either, he was a very odd rare mixture of both, as was Stalin and many of the Eastern Communists in General, including the Chinese, Koreans, etc. Communism in the East is more right-wing than Communism in the West. Its odd, yes, but its reality. Google "Socialism vs the USSR" and you can see the details

    Politicians better wise up to vice quickly, they're establishing themselves as a force with a considerable following- people are insulted when someone like Jeremy Hunt turns down an interview because he doesn't know the name.

    This disgusting farce of a 'democratic'process is exactly why so many British people are politically apathetic. Whilst I believe that not voting is disgusting and disrespectful in itself, it saddens me that such a system as we see has resulted from the suffering of millions over centuries and war, so in a sense I can empathise with the apathetic. I just wish that there was a socialist version of Nigel farage minus the xenophobia tbh
