- With Election Day fast approaching, polls show the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump to be the closest in a generation.
The Times journalists Michael Barbaro, Shane Goldmacher, Maggie Haberman and Nate Cohn break down the state of the race and discuss the last-minute strategies that might tip the scales.
This conversation for “The Daily” was recorded before the International Longshoremen’s Association suspended its strike, which closed down major ports on the East and Gulf Coasts.

This is what it feels like when you see your elementary school teacher outside of school for the first time.
I've been listening to Michael "This is what you need... toknowtoday" Barbaro on The Daily for years and he does not look anything like I imagined. Such is life.
Brooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo realllllllllll
😂😂😂 this is exactly why I went back and forth on seeing his face
Yeah, I feel the same way as when I saw a picture Stephen Dubner for the first time.
I think I always imagined the dude on the thumbnail for the Ezra Klein show.
Bro it's "here's what else you need... toknowtoday".
Longshoremen have suspended the strike. We are already out of date.
On the released episode of ‘The Daily,’ they do update this piece of info.
62 percent raise over 12 yrs...smaller details need to be ironed out.
It’s amazing to see all of your beautiful faces when I’ve known your voices for years.
I have been listening to The Daily for YEARS now... maybe since it began... and seeing a face to the voice threw me WAY off. Omg... I think I'm still in shock.
200k jobs added in last month inflation dropping.Wall St continues to rise ,I'm in Australia and can see these things. this is supposed to be a top newspaper .havent heard single policy apart taxing imports, deporting workers of unwanted jobs
I thought of the next one: Mikes of the round table
A ground-breaking Michaels-only political discussion
Daily on TH-cam!!! Lets go
Love this video roundtable format! More please!
strike is over until jan.
employment is steady.
dow at record.
inflation at 2.5%
If only these facts were repeated as much as falsehoods, it wouldn't be close. The media must have their horserace.
lol you don’t actually believe inflation is at 2.5%, right? Biggest load of malarkey I ever heard
Please more of these!!!
Love seeing the video format for this, feels like I’m in the room with you all!
Greatly prefer the video format
Oops, the strike is over.
Ive listened to the Daily so many many times. Thanks for doing a video. So thoughtful!
Love this new history-making format! ;)
Love you guys on spotify, but please do more of this!
Finally, we could see Michael Barbaro
Growing up in NYC, my dream was to work for the New York Times as an investigative reporter. As a young black man I knew there would be many obstacles to making that happen. But watching these NYT reporters at this round table…(while obviously these are some of the best in the country) I’m not sure I would have quite fit in…they all seem to have a sadness in their eyes, their voices almost melancholy during the discussion, all of them stern-faced, serious and white…😮 would the nature of the job had sucked the fun and vitality out of my life the way it seems to have done to them?? Hmmm, just a thought.
As a black person, your prospects of getting the job are better than if you were white or asian.
Mr. Barbaro's gone gray! Looks good sir
It weirdly looks like Michael's voice is dubbed to me because I've listened to him so much, but haven't ever seen him!
Aaaaand the strike is over.
this is so weird but i like it
The amount of vocal fry I'm hearing in this video is truly insufferable! 😖
Might need to edit down that first five minutes
wow I thought Michael Barbaro was AI this whole time hahah
The strike is over
What's with red mugs?
when did fox news get so grey & beige?
Jose Vega is better than ANY journalist at your rag.
Michael Babarro looks NOTHING like how I thought he would.
Is someone live controlling the mics? Why wasn't the audio levels adjusted in post? Or why not just put a single microphone out of frame pointing down to apture everyone. Very odd audio quality.
Where were the levels off? This is exactly how every roundtable podcast setup works. Besides, how would you adjust audio levels in post if you have a single microphone capturing everyone?
Ahhhh, the New York Times sanewashing DonOLD. Glad I canceled my membership.
👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
See ya
That’s what he looks like. Wow!!
6:12 if it does matter to these voters, to me, they would know who America can influence to help stop this > and just by the rhetoric they should know which party wants to help guide and who want to be hands off. Maybe I'm misreading that specific population
I don’t give a f about immigrants if they wanna come here good for them. Why DT whole thing about hating on them? Seems like a caricature of South Park episode
Overall very balanced discussion. Good job NYT 👍
Really!?!? Wow. So delusional. No one, I mean NO ONE in the middle of the American political spectrum or the right trusts these people because of all their massive political bias.
my avengers endgame
I just really don’t think his voice matches his everything else. Wow this is SO TRIPPY.
that lady never laughs
She never even smiles - ever.
Why should she have to?
@@jahnsgar for kicks
First last second video
Absolutely nobody cares about January 6. Let it go.
Lol... all the hot air, there was no strike. What a complete waste of time.. joke = nyt😂
It’s on hold, doesn’t mean they won’t strike in Jan, nothing is solved yet.
I supported Harris until I watched her first sit down interview with the ABC affiliate in Pennsylvania. Yikes! She's really not good at this. Sad that the dems didn't run the Michigan governor ... I think she could have beaten Trump. May the best candidate win!
Did you watch the debate? Harris mopped the floor with trump..!!
To me, the dems need to go back to'their previous self. Until then, Trump is way better for US foreign policy (and maybe intern). His health, really ? Remember who is leading now ? (And I am a european, non partisan.)
Go watch the Helsinki summit.
Trump better on foreign policy? There must be some good drugs in Europe.
@@plumerjr the polarization of the World is easier to manage this way. It is only a point of view, though. As a european, dems are preferable.
Choice = One Corporate Party or a different Corporate Party.
example: The USA in 2024 does not have a Public Single-Payer Healthcare System
that much poorer countries have had since the 1960's.
historical. unprecedented. inaugural. 😩
