Most reliable car I've ever owned, Normally a BL fan but credit where it's due, the Micra was a great little car

I don't think you would have been a BL fan in those days.
There was a high degree of unreliability. Too many strikes.
"Friday cars" we used to call them.
That's why Nissan. Toyota etc cashed in and our cars went down the swanee

@@steffanhoffmann8937 Tbh the Maestro it replaced wasn't particularly bad, it was eventually replaced by a Marina and a 214 (Marina for looks & 214 for reliability) Mechanically the 214 was reliable (the head gasket was fine despite popular belief they all went) just silly little faults like the window motor bolts coming undone trim falling off etc ...The Japanese reliability was a major reason for BL's downfall, The Triumph Acclaim and Rover 620 were great cars with there Honda engines, I think they would still be going now if they stuck with Honda

@@987654321Edd Certainly we know who to blame for the Honda/Rover divorce. When Bavarian giant 'BeeEmDubber-ya' bought out Rover, I remember reading at that point, that was when Honda started losing interest in Rover, about mid-1994, no longer supplying Rover with their engines for subsequent models. Real shame indeed.

My first company car was one of these! Everything inside was brown - seats, steering wheel, dash, seat belts. If I'd worn a brown shirt it would have looked like a head hovering in the car! I did my very best to break it in the hope of a better company car but it was completely bulletproof! Also did brilliant handbrake turns... :D

I passed by driving test in one of these, it was silver on a G plate! I originally was with a driving school that had a vauxhall Nova but couldn't get on with the instructor so changed! I remember I kept getting my left and right muddled so when it came to my test day I took this Caterpillar fridge magnet (Sid it's name was) and stuck it on the right hand side of the dashboard with blue tack! To my surprise I actually passed and first time too! I'm afraid Sid is long gone but I'll always remember him!

What a lovely original old car. I had a succession of Nissan Sunny’s as my first cars in the early 80’s and they were all comfortable good value and most important reliable. They were also all automatics at a time when it was difficult to find a small economical automatic car.

@@uk4caster Utter DRIVEL! Nissan's quality and reliability went down the drain and then they were going bust because of that and Renault stepped in and saved them. Renault's quality and profitability has continued to go from strength to strength while Nissan's has not and it is Renault's profits that are keeping Nissan going still. We have used Renault Clio and Kangoo vans for a very long time and they have been excellent reliable vehicles so much so I bought a 2008 Kangoo 1.5 Dci Expression car version and last of the original Kangoos and that has been an excellent and totally reliable and all round multipurpose vehicle that just sails through its MOT every year. Totally nothing wrong with the quality of them either.

"Murray Mints, if you're a pensioner" haha! I remember getting in one of these in the about 1990 and I commented to the owner how quiet it was compared to my MK1 Fiesta and the owner agreed, who had just taken on the Micra after having a MK1 Fiesta. I like them :) Second hand cars were a lot more expensive to buy back then, in comparison to wages. I remember you had to spend around £1k to get anything decent for a small runaround.

So right. This was back when slow depreciation, reliability and fuel economy really mattered to us. Fiestas, Polos, Novas, Minis and Micras kept their prices up like nobody's business. Around £5-to-£6-grand brand new, it was common for all of these cars to be 12 years old before reaching that magic '£995-in-the-FreeAds' price benchmark. Fun times indeed.

I agree with you that modern cars have awful visibility thanks to those sharply sloping windscreen. All micra upto the k12 had really great visibility . I was used to driving them so much that i bought a new suzuki swift because it is the only car now available with an upright windscreen that's curved as well. You will love it too and it is James May's favourite normal car of 2018. Its driving position is so reminiscent of my k10 and k12 micra.

Gorgeous little cars. That was the third facelift version of the K10. The switch blank on the right was for the rear wash wipe. They used to fit Fiesta Mk2 rear wiper kits and fit the nissan switch, this later was turned into the official Nissan UK accessory. Nissan UK had it’s own dealer network known as AFG (automotive finance group) and gradually replaced most of the independent dealers. The Premium specification was a sales promotion only sold by AFG and ran across the Micra, Sunny and Bluebird. It was basically a reduction in price of base models with special finance deals. They threw carpet mats at them and a cheap badge on the tailgate. The sunroof is also aftermarket and probably fitted by the dealer as the interior light you liked so much was actually nearer the front originally and had to be moved backwards when the sunroof was fitted. Those cars were great as long as servicing was kept up to as well as the timing belt replaced regularly.
The third and final facelift also came with a 1.2 engine option as well.
A great motor Tom you are very lucky to own a nice K10 😃
Incidentally not long after that car was registered Nissan UK lost the official franchise for Nissan in the UK and was replaced by Nissan Motor GB that was owned by the parent company in Japan.

Got to love a Micra. So easy to drive and run like clockwork. I think the "Premium" badge was the importers way of jazzing up base poverty spec. I remember it on basic Bluebirds as well. Note the lack of rear wiper and fifth gear, and those wonderful vinyl door cards instead of cloth.

As a young car enthusiast in the late 1980s and early 1990s I never liked these K10s much, except for the "Colette" spec with it's snazzy black and silver two tone paint job. However, I think that they are such a good classic car choice due to it's simplicity and of course, strong construction.

These were fantastic cars. My mum had one on an A registration plate first generation from new. It was 1 litre SGL. SGL gave you more sumptuous seats, with adjustable lumber support and rear seat pockets, deep pile velvet texture carpets, with matching over carpet mats, plush velvet door cards with harder wearing trim at the base, intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper radio cassette with four speakers, electric ariel . Mum had electric windows, not sure if this was standard or an extra , electric tilt and slide sunroof. 5 speed gearbox , power steering, a clock , lights on warning chime etc it was much better equipped than Vauxhall’ and Ford cars in this class and to be honest the next class up. This level of equipment in 1984 on a car of this class just didn’t happen. It was a great drive and very comfortable and roomy for its size. Mum replaced it with a 1991 1.3 GSX that she also had new and kept until 200O when she had a new second generation Nissan almera 1.5 on a 51 plate that she had from new until she died in 2016. A friend of hers is still driving the Almera and it’s in mint condition, only ever needed brake pads and a replacement rear wiper motor. It had 59,000 miles on clock when she died in 2016 . Same friend had both Micras and only got rid of them to have mums next car from her. All three cars never gave mum or her friend any trouble and always passed MOT with no issues. Both mum and her friend had cars serviced every year and always garaged them at night. Seeing this review brought back great memories. I passed my driving test age 17 in her Micra. I loved that car, very smooth and much better than bathe Ford Fiesta , Vauxhall Nova of the same era.
Great review Steph. As usual well researched and excellent presentation. I always look forward to your videos dropping on a Sunday.
The premium trim level was a special trim level that they did in the summer of 1989 across the range. I think it was at one particular Nissan dealer network, but I could be wrong about that. They gave entry level models extra equipment on Micra, Sunny and Bluebird models and sold them at a lower price. I remember a car advert at the time featuring all three models and detailing the extra equipment . The pop up sunroof was part of the extra equipment on the premium Micra as I recall and special low prices. More spec than base models of each car and at a lower price.
Mum always had Nissan cars. Dad had Datsun and Nissan from 1973, until 1992 when he switched to having Rover, first a New Rover 200, then a Rover 600 in 1995 and finally a Rover 800 in 1998, he died in 2000. Would like to see you review these Rover 200, 600 models. I loved your review of the 800. They were stunning cars. Whatever people say, Rover cars were quality and beautiful to drive.
Keep up the good work Steph.

My mum had a G reg 3 door for a very long time, it was gold with brown interior and brown checked seats, she adored it and it never went wrong. 4 gears and it regularly went from Inverness to Glasgow down the A9 and back no problem at all. She kept it for me in the driveway for a couple years until I passed my test so it could be mine, but it has sadly rusted too far underneath and had to be scrapped. So much love for these wee cars.

I had a 1992 1 litre .I genuinely liked it but for me I had about 1Inch of head room,It skidded and locked up in an emergency on it's skinny small tyres .For a car designed to last a few years its build quality was acknowledged by car mechanics magazine who said it's one of the best cars ever made .This is prove by how well they lasted as driving school cars .Mine was a limited edition magic which was black with green tartan seats and door cards. No clock came with the car for some strange reason..

I learned to drive in a H-registered Micra 1.2SLX - my driving instructor spared no expense, but apart from slightly nicer door trims, a rear wiper and a five speed box, it was little different the the one tested here! The Micra had the reputation of being the easiest car to drive, and that's why driving schools bought them in droves.
The blanking plate opposite the hazard warning lights is where the switch for the rear wiper would be.

I remember hiring one of these, and drove from Hayling Island up to Manchester and back in it. The gear ratios were great, with long gearing, enabling me to cruise at 85 mph on the motorway on fairly low revs (in top gear, of course) which meant that it was both economical and relaxing to drive at motorway speeds. It was an impressive little car. This one looks as if it's got air con - is that correct?

This particular Micra is very well equipped for a Premium model. It was meant to be the lowest price, lowest specification, lead in model. Like the Fiesta Popular, Metro City, Nova Merit or Polo C. No clock. No rear wash/wipe. Single speaker LW/MW radio. Even the passenger door mirror and full size wheel trims were an optional extra! And the optional pop up and removable sunroof was pure decadent luxury!

I used to work for Nissan in the late 90’s and remember the K10 very well, I thought Nissan’s were great from the era of the K10, worked on 100’s of K11’s etc but I didn’t think they were as good even though they were great fun to drive 😎

you're quite right. They are not noisy at all. We owned the original version from that came out in 1983, and don't recall it ever being noisy. Fantastic cars, very nimble and light but drove like a much bigger car , somehow managed to combine the best of both worlds. Sadly though it started to rust so garaging these cars is essential. Owned it from new for 5 years or so and nothing went wrong with it at all, just needed servicing.

Like a retired neighbour I once had, who bought a new-at-the-time metallic Mint Green A-reg Micra that had a small oblong Datsun decal on the tailgate and front grille, but Nissan-branded mud flaps, wheel centre-caps and floor mats. I thought it was quite a nice little car at the time. Really very modern-looking for 1984. And she had it for about 18 years and 64,000 miles before she gave up driving.

The premium badge, I can confirm They also made a bluebird "premium" there's a g reg one near me which weirdly you think of premium as being the fully loaded plush big engined model, actually it was the opposite, it was the 1.6 base model. I'd imagine this being the case with premium badged bluebirds it probably also applied to the micra too.
Info from my ex missus dad who worked up the road at Nissan Sunderland where the bluebirds where built.

    • @owensteele1274
      @owensteele1274 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Bluebirds were very solid cars. Premium was a more convincing-sounding name for base-level trim than Aspen, Select, City, Envoy, Merit, Style and Laser. Mind you, Ford did give us the Bonus name for some of their base models as well (:D). But I'm sure the Bluebird Premium was still fairly plush at that time, at least next to its Sierra Laser and Cavalier Envoy alternatives.

Thought you were changing gear a bit too early Steph, I remember these as being really nippy and surprisingly capable on the Motorway partly due to beautifully spaced Gear Ratios, so shame you stayed on urban speeds. Might be a case for asking owners what approx speeds they change gear at on faster roads; eg, 40mph in 3rd and 55mph in 4th is right for my 90’s Pug on a slip road.

I seem to recall that although the Premium label makes it sound posh, it was actually a base model like the Metro and Maestro City. There was definitely a Bluebird Premium and I think a Sunny too. Iain

Iain Robertson you’re spot on it was a base model, sold at lower price than usual base model with a few extras thrown in. They dis a Micra, Sunny and Bluebird as you say. I remember the tv advert for the premium models. Looked to see if I could find the advert on here to add as a link, but couldn’t find it. If I remember the Micra Premium was £5999 in 1989

“Hot hatch hi-jinks” - love it. Like many people my age, I learned to drive on a Micra K10, as they were the driving instructor’s car of choice for many years, with good reason. They were super-reliable (trouncing the Metro, and to be fair most of its European rivals, the in the breakdown stakes I’m afraid ), easy to drive as you’ve seen, and cheap to run and insure. When a work colleague was looking for a new car in 1991, she asked an AA man friend whether she should buy a Metro and he suggested a Micra instead: “we see loads of Metros. We never see Micras, “ he said, and that was that. She bought a ‘mini-Nissan’ as she referred to it, and never regretted it. I knew several people who did the same and neither did they. Sadly, the same couldn’t be said for those who bought Metros - they were so pot luck if you got a good or bad one.

    • @williamwoods8022
      @williamwoods8022 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Rubbish - The Metro was a very reliable car and even BSM came out and claimed that they were very reliable as well and that was why they continued to use them for a very long time. I worked in a couple of garages back then and we looked after and serviced Metros, Maestros, Montegos etc and they were very reliable and only came in for servicing when they were due. The problem was with the owners who never looked after their cars or when they did they used cheap parts in them - same goes for garages who didn't do the work on them or said they did work that they didn't and then when the car broke down etc then the car/manufacturer would get the blame and not the owner/garage. A big problem with cars such as the Metro/Mini with the A-Series engines was people/garages using cheap points/condensers etc as these cars would burn through them in no time causing breakdowns or rough running issues etc. Micras and other Japanese cars were just as bad if they were not being looked after as well and my sisters Nissan Sunny that was looked after was written off on the Kingston Bridge in Glasgow when it suddenly died and slowed and a Rover 800 behind ploughed into it crushing the back end in so Datsuns/Nissans were NOT as reliable as they were made out to be - that is why Nissan almost went bust and Renault had to step in and save them - of course while Renault has went from strength to strength and making huge profits Nissan is continuing to make cars etc that are getting reputations for unreliabilty all over the world and struggling to make profits these days.

An ’87 Micra was my first car, and the only car I’ve had to get rid of because it broke down too frequently.
A super slow 50hp shitbox with horrible quality, ergonomics, handling etc. that just wouldn’t do highway speeds and overheated if you had too many passengers.
Although we managed to fit 8 people in mine.
Later on I got a Golf Mk1 and the thing felt so much more solid, the engine had a nice, nippy character and it would take corners surprisingly well.
Yet I miss my old funky smelling Micra.

the premium was a base model with a badge stuck on it, so they could sell it at a slightly lower price to the normal base model. they also did a bluebird 1.6 premium, based on the 1.6 L model.

Suzuki meanwhile has become a top brand for reliability and i love its driving position with the upright windscreen , which reminds me of the k10.

It was way more refined than the metro to drive. The gearbox, clutch , steering and brakes were light years ahead and it had a fantastic driving position and were super reliable . Not a bad looking car with a nice set of alloys. We used ours for 170k miles and gifted it to our mechanic. I then used a k12 for ten years and it was a marvellous car. However, i now drive a 2017 swift because Nissan has lost its reputation for extreme reliability after Renault came on board. Still adore the k10 and k12 though.
