I think you should do the gearbox walk through in all videos, Steph, because when I was growing up most of these cars didn't run well at all. It's great to see them looking this good for once!

In Oz, they were the 5 door Datsun or Nissan Pulsar. Bought one new in 1984. Never let me down but I never fell in love with it. Perhaps the problem with Japanese things is that they are just so well designed that everything falls to hand, everything just works, it's all balanced. Overall, the ease of ownership makes what should be perfection, tends to feel boring. Bertrand Russell wrote about a comfortable level of wrong. He was right.

This is absolutely brilliant and looks to be in showroom condition!! What a fantastic 'survivor' and I hope it continues! Big compliments to the owner!
Fun fact - Here in Australia, the N12 Nissan Cherry was sold as the Nissan Pulsar and was also shared with GM-Holden (Vauxhall/Opel) and so was also sold in Australia as the LB Holden Astra! While the Nissan Pulsar was sold as a 4dr sedan, 5dr hatch and 2dr Coupe (N12 Nissan Pulsar EXA) the Holden Astra version was sold only as a 5dr hatch. The N12 Nissan Pulsar and LB Holden Astra were also built in Australia. The 3dr hatch was never sold in our market.
Really enjoying your channel Steph, keep up the great work! Two thumbs from Australia!

Introduced late 83 (A reg) I think and lasted on the UK market until 1986 (D reg). You could have 3 levels of trim, the L, GS and SGL. Both 3 and 5 door bodies were offered. In 1985 there were special edition Maxima models and there were run-out added value Spirit versions, too. I liked the streamlined look of these Cherries and once again loved your review of this sadly now very rare cars. They all rusted away...

Great choice of car for a review Steph! I owned a 1981 Cherry back in the 1984 - 87 period, so it was the previous version to this one. Mine also had the built in radio which was a little unusual back then. It drove smoothly, with light controls and was quite nippy too. Needless to say, it never let me down. I loved it!

Nice to see one of these in such good condition. My first car was a Nissan Cherry Europe, probably one of the last left in the country, but it definitely wasn't in as good nick as this. Loved the Alfa engine, but it wasn't the most reliable after 22 years. I finally managed to crash it and couldn't get the spare parts, so donated the carcass to the local fire dept. Was pretty gutted as it would probably be a rare collectible now.

I'm restoring a later Nissan N13 Pulsar here in Australia. The "Cherry" was callled a "Nissan Pulsar" in many markets including Australia. It's quite an easy car to work on for a non-qualified mechanic like me. Thanks for putting this video up here!

What a cracking example - looks very tidy indeed. Back in the early '90s my then partner bought a Nissan Pulsar of the same vintage, with a 3-speed auto - 'twas as slow as a wet week, as I recall.

I learned to drive in a 1979 Datsun Sunny 120Y. It had nearly half a million miles on the clock. The paint had no gloss. The bodywork was like a lace curtain. And yet the original engine and gearbox were still perfect. The engine couldn't be heard on tickover. I was amazed by it. I think Nissan/Datsun cars of the period are very quiet as a breed and amongst the easiest cars to drive.

That would make sense the car being assembled in Japan with its indicators being mounted on the RHS of the steering wheel. I would like to add one more thought to the Nissan-Datsun conundrum, I own a 2002 Nissan-Datsun ute that was imported from Japan to NZ. With that in mind I think Nissan used the Datsun name as a model identifier for commercial vehicles assembled in Japan at that time. Love the video, love the car, great watch 😀

Nice review so rare to see these early Nissan’s the N12 was sold as a Nissan pulsar here in Australia there was even A Nissan Pulsar ET turbo version we never got the three door body only the 5 door Hatchback or 4 door sedan plus with partnership with Holden or GMH with model sharing due to the political climate in Australia at the time it was sold as a Holden Astra not to be confused with the European Astra we didn’t get many European GM products back in the 80’s

Late comment as I'm only just catching up on your back catalogue! Many many years ago I had a bright yellow 1985 Cherry ZX Turbo. Sorry to say I ruined it (youth and stupidity) but it's definitely the one car I truly miss owning, especially as they're so so rare now! Great fun to drive, I'd urge you to do a review if you ever get the chance to drive a Turbo.

My Dad had a 1.3 GL Y reg 5 door. Had these little sliders just behind the handbrake centre console which operated the rear door locks (this was before remote central locking) . We took in foreign families who were learning English during summers for a while, one family from Munich, the Dad was in quality control at the BMW factory, was taking mental notes of the car to see how well built it was. A year later we went across Europe in this Cherry and stayed with the same German family and got a personal tour of the BMW factory (on a weekend mind). Topped by the journey there in a 7 series which merely floated along their autobahn at speed I'd never experienced before then (obviously we're only allowed 70mph in UK 😉 fur cough cough)

I love and adore this car. I have an nissan cherry n12 from 1985 1.5 N/A 8V automatic. Tuned the engine with period correct engine modifications from that time, Stage 2 camshaft, double webber carburetor setup, exhaust manifold, inlet manifold, worked head, different pistons, higher compression, custom exhaust. R32 GT-R brakes, rear conversion to disc brakes 75HP stock, 145HP now. I own it now for 15 years and never gonna sell it. yeah parts are very hard to come by, i use mostly second hand parts to keep it going, engine parts are relatively easy, but bodyparts like trim mirrors fender, interior parts are also very hard to get. keep that in mind while buying one its not easy

Love your research Steph. That gearbox pattern is perfect for a reverse turn. Empty clear car park etc. Get a 'scrap' car. Go flat out backwards, spin the steering wheel to the right. As the car is spinning gives you time to change from reverse to second. Floor it when it straightens and 99% of the people will think you are better than James Bond.....or later films that I've not seen. Honestly, this will boost your cred 1000%

Datsun/Nissan, the Nissan name was used more for prestige models they were proud of and knew would do well, the Datsun name was used on the common everyday cars!!
Yes i think this car is an import.
Around WW1 & WW2 most car manufacturers were building tanks planes etc for the wars, so there were less new cars plus steel was in short supply dew to the wars!!
I own a 92 Nissan it is a great car very reliable on Long trips i know i am going to get home and get good fuel economy depending on the right foot i have gotten 43mpg from a 1.8 auto!!
Japanese cars like mine are worth little right now but in the future their value will go up, my Nissan is a beautiful car, nice to look at, comfy good ride, but when asked to do not worry it will GO very well, fuel economy will suffer but thats how it is!!

I had to laugh at the ridiculous i3 thing stopped by the cops at 17:13 😂 I hate them as they represent everything thats gone tragic about modern cars. Buggery ugly too yet people buy them simply for the badge nailed on 🤦‍♂️

Did you ever have a chance to make a review on a Subaru? I used to own few of their models (1970's until 1990's) in the past. I don't know if they ever made it to the UK.

If I'm not mistaken the Cherry was sold as the first-generation Sentra, here in the U.S.

My Granddad had one of these. It was the first brand new car he ever bought, it was an A reg in red. The week he had it he parked up at work and some one had keyed the paintwork on the side of the car. Unfortunately as well, he was driving with my Mom and Dad in the car talking about their wedding cake in 1989, he went over the lights on green but someone came over on red and crashed into them, wrote the car off. Being a very superstitious kind of man, he swore he'd never buy a red car again because, of the bad luck he had since owning it. I believe after that he bought a second hand Austin Princess.

I learned to drive in one of these - boring but very sound car. The Cherry Europe/ARNA mashup was different from this and didn't sell much. This gold example is pure Nissan.

The Alfa Romeo Arna was available in the UK for a couple of years, but weren't seen as proper Alfa's as they looked like boxy Nissan's. This Cherry is famtastic though. Another rarity that you used to see parked on every side street.

My dad’s bluebird being an 1985 had Japanese labels under the bonnet, I think it was the 86 through 90 bluebird’s that were built in Sunderland. The first micra was Datsun badged but said Datsun by Nissan on a small badge at the rear. I used to like the look of the Stanza, was a little more curvy than the Cherry Europe.
