I know this video's been around for a while now. Try Apple Barrel (yup, the Wal Mart stuff) "Pavement" for priming. Super cheap and an awesome flat black primer. I use this on all metal and plastic minis and it works great. Dries in that chalky hard way that is needed for other paints to stick. You did a nice job on these in ways that help bring out the details!

the beetle guy's head looks very phallic to me. You could use the people as head piles or for mis-proportioned arm swaps for mutants, maybe.

Before priming the soft molds, do you give them a good wash with dish soap before spraying? Have you tried auto body primer?

Blandco, have you ever seen those plastic buckets full of small toys, representing "Animals from the jungle", or "Animals from the farm"? They got real nice miniatures, almost with a good size to use on D&D. I´ve never tried to paint them, however.

I have found some of those at the Goodwill by the Pound. It really depends on the plastic if they can be painted easily or not.

Have you considered the Big Bucket Of Monsters from the same company? Similar issue as these with a lot of the minis having scale issues but it has a Godzilla type, a giant moth, a giant spider, a cyclops, a devil or demon... Heck you could even use the sea creature and the mummy as larger types.

I know Miniature Mashup did a video on that bucket. Some of them would work but I think the bulk of them would be useless. The giant moths could be interesting. If I ever see it at a reduced price anywhere.

I don't think the amount of creatures in the Monster bucket that would be useless isn't any higher than the ones in this humans and aliens set, to be honest...

Well in the Monster bucket I think there are only 3 really useful sculpts. The demon, the cyclops and the moth. The classic monsters are too big to represent medium sized monsters. The graves are low quality and oversized. And Godzilla is cool but is an awkward sculpt. The spider just seems like a terrible sculpt. So that leaves like 15-20 usable minis compared to the 35 usable minis from the Humans vs Aliens. I guess it would depend on what you need.

I see the black lagoon monster as being an adequate base for the pre-5E Merrow (back when it still had legs), or a Sahuagin Baron.
The mummy I would find a use for. I grew up with the classic 1930s Superman cartoon The Mummy Strikes! on VHS so I could definitely use it for such a giant mummified guardian. (I think 5E is really lacking in Large humanoid/giant types that aren't ugly brutes like ogres and trolls)
And I haven't really stockpiled on spiders from dollar stores myself so I personally would have a use for em. And Godzilla I can still see myself using in some capacity.
So for me, that's only six sculpts in the bucket I wouldn't have a use for.
Heck someone foreign, after posting on Facebook asking for identification of those minis, offered me to take 34 of the minis from this set that I find useful as she'd only bought the loose lot she found for the wolfman and vampire. I didn't get as good a deal as I would have wanted (3$ for the stuff but 14$ for the shipping from Norway) but I mean that 34 minis is the same amount that you found useful from Humans vs Aliens so...... ;)

The third one on the thumbnail... He's a good Piscodaemon/Piscoloth mini, which sadly still await stats in 5E.

The one that looks very cthulhu-like, if painted different colors, could possible pass as a baby chuul if you needed that for anything.

Could use the big humans for statues... guy with the ball bat could be a juvenile stone giant

With the cheap miniatures i find i have to scrub them all down with a toothbrush and i use a little isopropyl alcohol as the mould release thats on them or whatever is still there and inhibits primer or paint. this is all judging by the film left in the water after i've scrubbed them all down...

Did you wash the plastic miniatures and try abrading them a little with sandpaper before priming? I have these too and want to make them into statues mostly. I ordered the fantasy set and they sent me these!

Can't seem to get SCS stuff for any sort of reasonable price in the UK. Shame, some good stuff for D&D across their sets.

I've been seeing McFarlane and dragonheart toy dragons and was wondering if you think they are any good or not.

Mainly of they are of scale, because at the moment my players are not picky w/ miniatures. (Currently were using Harry Potter, DC, & Marvel metal figures from target for most humanoids and PC's)

Yes! I have a couple of the really nice ones from back when they were cheaper in price. I think they work really well with D&D but I haven't hadn't done a video on them since they are a bit more expensive nowadays.

Hopefully you washed the figures first to clean off release agents.

The Primer you are using is dark grey, not black. Black would be "schwarz" in german

Probably would have converted the Cthulhu-like toys into statues, maybe glue some cannibalized heroclix wings to it for the classic look. Still, love your paint job for them

I've got so many heroclix. I like the idea of utilizing them for bits to finish out other sculpts.... Thanks for the idea!
