- F-Zero X is a futuristic racing video game for the Nintendo 64 (N64) console. Developed by Nintendo's EAD division, it was released in Japan, North America, and Europe in 1998. In 2000, an expansion pack was exclusively released in Japan providing numerous extra features not in the original game. F-Zero X was ported in 2004 to the iQue Player in China. The game was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan, Europe and in North America, in 2007. To honor the 100th Virtual Console release in Europe, it became available on June 15.

I didn't like it as a kid, when it came out. I liked the Jazzy soundtrack of the SNES version better but when I grew older I started to like and appreciate it.
@@thaneros Yep, this was my #1 issue with GX as well.
If you ask me, this is not only one of the best racing games on the N64, but it's also one of the best racing games ever made. :D

@@Jack_80 - personally I think X is way more fun than GX on the Gamecube. GX is not bad and looks much prettier but X has got it where it counts.
@@AnthonyFlack I loved X but GX was just another level. It was harder to get into but GX hasn't been bettered to this day.
I'm always surprised with how well it controls and how smooth the game is. I love playing this game. It's one of the few games that makes that janky control stick seem like it works perfectly haha. Despite that stick, the N64 controller is pretty damn good though.
I got this and Ocarina of Time for Xmas 1998. Good times.

Happy f*cking Christmas! Christmas '97 I was spoiled like hell by my parents. N64 + red controller + Rumble Pak + Controller Pak + Diddy Kong Racing + Bomberman 64. Ohyes. Best thing about it was that my dad's credit card was never charged for it. Thanks, Gameplay!
That's a great Christmas, I got n64 + goldeneye, mario 64 and fighters destiny for Christmas when I was 13.

Huge fan and 60fps? Back in 1998? Yeah the graphics can suck. Nintendo had their priorities right.
the graphics aren't that bad. but i'm probably one of the least nitpicky people on earth when it comes to polygon counts and resolution. i still think shadows of the empire on n64 looks great, despite most talking about how poorly it's aged.
@@Jack_80 - to me games with bad framerates have aged the worst. Anything running at a solid 60hz with a decent draw distance is fine by me. The crazy colours are straight out of the SNES game and I think the graphics (and music) in F-Zero X do a very good job of updating while keeping faithful to the style of the original. Most importantly the graphics in X are super clear which is what you want when you're going 1700km/h.

i got this game years ago at a flea market. In my opinion the best F-zero game ever made.
The game is a masterpiece. Takes me back to my younger years.
One of my all-time favourite N64 games. This was always my go-to game for a quick blast. I especially enjoyed the Death Race. I played it so much I could do it in no time at all.
I just picked up this game for a great price in mint condition! The cartridge is still shining haha. Your reviews are awesome I never got to play this one. f-zero on snes was one of my favorite games.

agree, in many ways nintendo feels kind of behind nowadays while they have so much potential and opportunities to for instance besides having a good 'kiddy' racer mk8 (which is great by the way) taking a more serious route by reboosting the f-zero series for a more mature hardcore audience. f-zero gx co-developed by sega is absolutely stunning as well.. imagine how that would look on a wii-u.
One of my favorite N64-games. I mastered the championship several times and everytime I did I deleted the savegame so I could start again! And as a metal-guy I love the music to this day.
This video was one of the many reasons I picked up an n64, your videos gave me nostalgia for a game i didn’t even grow up with

I played this game a hell of a lot. I really loved the graphics actually. To me the simplicity seems more like a deliberate design aesthetic (though it is of course also a necessity to ensure high framerate and large grid of racers)
Loved this back in the day. 25 year old game, running at a constant 60fps. Damn, the N64 was a great machine!

I never had this as a kid but played it for the first time a few games ago and it instantly became one of my favorites. I had already liked F-Zero GX quite a lot, but F-Zero X has the purest intensity as a racer and a great, very 90s aesthetic with its rock music and its comic book art. The track randomizer is one of the most awesome things and I'm sad other racing games haven't done it too.

for some reason after i finished the Joker Cup on Expert i get the credits like you should. then it tells me see you next time and wants me to reset the game
i do that but now everytime i power it on it plays the guitar riff but it never advances to the title screen

Who is CVG? The music for this game was perfectly crafted and very addictive. The throw back tunes to the original were fantastic updates.

When I first turned this game on, I was amazed at how buttery smooth the frame rate was. The great sense of speed while going up against 29 other racers was worth the toned down graphics and compressed sound.
F zero x was a huge part of my childhood alongside Soul Calibur on dreamcast. I remember wanting to learn to play guitar because of how much i loved the shredding sound track. What a time to be alive, i feel so sorry for the fortnite generation..
if I see another damn fortnite video in the trending box on my page I'm going to cry haha

Man, I loved this game as a kid.
6 year old me wondering how I fell off a basic oval track, but later realized that Silence was a "twisting" oval. So if you went too fast, the ship would launch off the track. 🤣
This is the greatest racing game I have ever played. Holy-shit the track designs are inspired, and it FEELS so good to propel the Shiny-Future-Rocket-RaceCars through the track. They are blindingly fast, and you really feel like the cars are about to take off and take a soaring shortcut across the track. Sometimes they do... ^~*

I think that the graphical quality is not the most important thing to consider. On the SNES, the 3D perspective was faked with mode 7 tile rotations, so all tracks had to fit on a flat plane out of necessity. The true 3D engine that powered F-Zero X freed Nintendo to build creative and wild racing tracks featuring loops, jumps, slopes, tubes, pipes, pits, and corkscrews. Also, having a full 6 degrees of movement really improved the controls, particularly the ability to pitch the vehicles forward and back, which really enhances handling while airborne. Nintendo used the 3D tech to significantly improve the tracks and the controls. That is why I feel that the N64 release is the superior game.
In general SNES graphics have aged much better than N64. N64 was the start of something completely new, so looking back at it now, the graphics look really strange, while SNES type graphics will forever look good in my opinion.
As someone who was fortunate enough to be involved with this game, it is still one of my favs.
cant go wrong with it even to this day even if i do seem to be playing f zero X climax more these days as i love having a new n64 game to play

When I first saw F-Zero I was absolutely blown away. Unfortunately at the time the game didn't stick with me long as it was way more challenging than the first one, and I didn't appreciate challenge when I was younger. Needless to say my tastes have changed and I now love this game.
some of those random generated tracks were so funny.... you'd get one where literally every vehicle fell off on some lethal bend... if you slowed down enough you'd be the last one left and win! good times
PS screw CVG i still have can get the soundtrack in my head today and I'm 35, one of the best.
Great review Glenn. I bought the game on Amazon and it just arrived today. After playing the game for an hour I could easily say it's the best racing game I ever played. I just wish I played it as a kid and I hate myself for not picking it up earlier. Thanks for the review. Keep it up : )

This game made me hardcore fan of the franchise and it took me 15 years to beat it on Master difficulty.
By the way, Captain Falcon is my main since Melee.
This game was my first contact ever with the Power Metal genre, one that would become a huge part of my life over 10 years later.

This is 2nd favourite Nintendo 64 game,second only to Castlevania Legacy of Darkness.
The introduction of your video is my personal feelings,too,for this console.A game that really means business to the rivals of that times.
I personally love the fact that they choose 60fps beside a great graphic...but,for me,this graphic is more than enough even today,to watch like many other retrogaming^^

Late at the party, I'm just being introduced to this game, a friend of mine showed him this game, loved it, so much that I bought the game the following day as soon as I could, next thing you know, we're pratically F-Zero addicted for some time, I'm now at Joker Cup and play it with Black Bull...
Best I could do on that game was making it 3rd on Joker Cup, but only on standard level, Nintendo really did their homeworks, completely improved the original F--Zero from the SNES but the only problem is that it's on another console...
I'll take this game over Super Mario Kart every times, it's feeling like it's a lot faster than SMK...

I'ts my second fave racer on the n64, I remember loving the speed, characters and music as a kid!

Was my favorite game on the n64 when I first played it. This, Beetle Adventure Racing, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart 64, 1080, Wave Race and others are the reasons why N64 is the king of racing games.

My & my whole neighborhood used to all take turns playing on 4player mode this game was the wave!!!!
This game was excellent when I played it as a child and still is today. The controls are challenging to handle, but feels right. The best part is I never knew the game moved at a whopping 60 fps. That was way ahead of its time considering that n64 games typically move at about 25-30 fps.

I would love for Nintendo to show this series some much needed love. Not many know of this game series or if they do it's because they were around during it's prime. I heard conversations from younger kids say that Captain Falcon is a character that was made just for the Smash Bros series and I have to correct them we've had 3 Smash Bros games since the last F-Zero game. Either in my opinion drop CF from the Smash Bros series or bring the F-Zero racing series back into relevance. The Switch era I think would be a wonderful time to do just that.
Things to put into the new game would be the custom vehicle mode with naming your custom machine, a track builder mode where you can upload your stages you've built(like in Mario Maker) and even when you create at least 4 tracks and upload your Cup.
The Nintendo 64 has the best futuristic racing games ever made such as F-Zero X, Wipeout 64, Hydro thunder and San Francisco Rush 2049

Still play it on my n64, pure gaming bliss this game is, and it also gave me the reason to love metal.
This game is going with me when i'm buried after dying of old age.
I remember i let my ex borrow it, then i broke up with her, but the game was still with her, but i got it back in a half a year, and i will NEVER EVER FUCKING loan it away to anyone, this game is my unborn child x)
To this day I've still not played a faster paced game than this. Great game

its super hard, makes this game look like a child toy in comparison - the difficulty on the storyline is nuts at points
I havent actually played this one, but will add it to the wishlist. Love the music for it, and the promise of randomly generated tracks sounds great!

This alongside Mario Kart 64 and Ridge Racer 64 and possibly Beetle Adventure Racing, was the best racing game on the N64. Bought for £9.99 brand new back in the day. Made even better with the 64DD expansion kit.

Awesome game! They made AX/GX too difficult! I don’t mind difficult, as long as it is not artificial difficulty and right at the beginning. Difficulty should be gradually added, not instantaneously.
I remember hitting the near vertical difficulty spike on the GameCube story mode and being like Damn im done with this
